Options Removed from Old Edge Browser

We loved two features in the old Edge version that were removed subsequently in the Chromium based version. One is the tab card preview and other is to save tabs for latter by keeping them aside.

Using Tabs Preview Tool (Removed in Chromium Edge)

Tabs Preview was the useful feature in Edge which allows you to see a thumbnail preview of your open tabs.

To preview a single tab, float your mouse over the tab to slide a thumbnail preview of the tab.

Multiple Preview

The latest Chromium based Edge will show only the short preview with name, URL and site icon without the content. There are also no options to view multiple tab preview in the browser. However, you can use “Alt + Tab” keys to view the content preview of all open tabs in Edge.

The two provide wide range of features to facilitate smooth browsing for both casual and intensive users. In this article, we are going to explore Edge and Firefox by comparing their features to establish which option is best to use under different circumstances.

Firefox is a free web browser from the non-profit Mozilla Foundation. It is available for multiple platforms including Windows, Linux, macOS and Android. Both Firefox and Edge offers

Mozilla Firefox has a comfortable UI but the looks and components vary with different themes and settings. You can choose to enable/disable the menu bar to increase the screen space for browsing. Besides, the browser supports complete theme customizations, which alters the interface in terms of icons, padding and elements.

Some of the interesting Firefox usability and UI features include:

Security and Privacy Features

Edge is harmless to your system as it is a component of Windows 10 running in a sandbox environment. It has a built-in SmartScreen that scans the reputation of sites you visit and blocks suspicious sites. To enhance privacy, Edge allows you to use Windows Live ID instead of passwords for online authentication.

However, the browser saves some of your private data, even when browsing in private mode and it is updated with Windows updates. In terms of online privacy, Firefox is the best bet. The browser has a built-in privacy feature that prevents websites from tracking your activities on the internet. Additionally, it supports HTTPS for all enabled sites and updates automatically in the background.

However, Firefox is open source, meaning its code is available to all including hackers. It also doesn’t have a robust sandbox mechanism.

Other Features

Themes: With Edge, you can only switch between the dark and the light theme. Firefox offers a variety of both wallpaper and complete themes.

Extensions/ Add-ons: Edge has little to nothing to offer in terms of extensions, while Firefox offers over 10,000 Add-ons in the Mozilla repository.

Read Mode: Both Firefox and Edge supports the read mode making easy to browse without any distraction. In addition to the read mode, Edge offers the “Note” feature that allows you to highlight and make notes on a web page.

Speed of Browsing Summary

While it may be hard to choose a better choice between Firefox and Edge, understanding their features can be helpful. Both the browser are ideal for different users depending on the situation and priorities. If you only use Windows OS then we recommend to go with Edge as it is a builtin component of Windows. However, if you want to use a same browser across platforms then Firefox is best for you.

How To Change New Tab Page Language In Microsoft Edge? – Webnots

There are many countries like China completely blocks services from Google, Facebook and Twitter. However, Microsoft has a different working model of cooperating with governments to sell their products through the world. Though this is good news for using Windows, Office and other Microsoft products, it creates unexpected problems for users causing inconvenience. One such problem is the language in new tab page of Microsoft Edge browser. If you are stuck with different language in Edge new tab page, here are some options that you can try.

Edge New Tab Page Language Problem

Microsoft Edge browser shows quick links, news feed and few other items on the new tab page. Ideally, you expect to customize the news feed and other text options in your favorite language. Unfortunately, it does not work like that and changing the browser’s language in settings page will not have any effect on the new tab page language. We have a Huawei Matebook and MacBook purchased from China Mainland and the new tab always show in Chinese as you can see below:

Default Edge New Tab Page in Chinese Language

Though we have to manually install Edge on Mac, it still shows Chinese language in new tab page. Also, there are no options during installation to select the language. If you don’t know Chinese, you will easily go crazy whenever opening new tab page. Though you can disable news feed and quick links in new tab page, it does not make sense to view other text in different language that you do not understand.

How to Change New Tab Language in Microsoft Edge?

After trying different options, we understand Edge new tab page takes the language from your computer’s language setting. Though changing computer regional language settings fixed the Chinese language problem, it may work differently based on your country. Hence, we will explain all possible options that you can try and we hope at least one should fix your problem.

1. Change Regional Computer Language

There is a regional setting both in Mac and Windows that default uses the language where you have purchased the device. In our case, the region is China Mainland which is the one Edge picks up for deciding the language in new tab page.

1.1. Change regional language in Mac:

First, we will explain changing the region settings in Mac.

Language and Region Settings in Mac

The section has two tabs – General and Apps. Ideally, you can go to “Apps” tab and select a custom language for any of the installed apps like Edge. Unfortunately, that does not work with Edge new tab page language. Hence, you need to change the “Region” under “General” tab to change the language in Edge new tab page.

As you can see, the current region is showing as “China mainland” which is the one picked up by Edge.

Enter Admin Password to Modify Settings

It should look like below with the “Region” showing as “United States”. If required, change the formats for calendar, time and temperature.

New Tab Page in English in Mac Edge

1.2. Change regional language in Windows:

Follow the below instructions to change the region in Windows 11:

Language and Region Settings in Windows 11

Scroll down the settings page and check the “Country or region”, as you can see it shows “China” in our case.

Set Your Country

Open Edge and check the new tab page has changed to the regional language.

Note: The Edge new tab language problem is something similar to Windows OS language problem. Huawei Matebook laptop what we have purchased came with single Chinese language installation without any option to change the display language. We have to upgrade to Windows Pro version to get a language pack and change the display language from Chinese to English.

2. Change Language from Page Layout

You can change the browser’s language from the page layout settings and check if that helps to change language in your new tab page.

Select Language and Content Option

Now, Edge will refresh automatically and load the new tab page in the selected language.

3. Try Edge Add-on for Changing New Tab Page

This is one of the simple and workable solutions though it needs third-party add-ons. Microsoft introduced add-ons for Edge browser as a beta option. Go to the add-ons page and search for “new tab page” items. You can install any of the available add-ons to have custom new tab page. For example, you can use a blank page or assign URL for new tab page with custom themes.

Microsoft Edge Add-ons

4. Disable News Feed in New Tab Page

If news feed is the only thing annoying you in the new tab page, then you can disable it from the page layout settings.

Turn Feed Content Off in Edge

5. Check Edge Language and Clear Browser History

The next thing you can try is to check the language of Edge and reset if required.

6. Stop App Access to Location Services

Sometimes sharing the location services in Edge can create such a problem. You can disable it from the settings to check if that helps.

6.1. Disable Location Services in Windows

Windows Location Permission for Apps

You can disable “Location services” option to completely disable it on your computer. Alternatively, only disable “Let apps access your location” or “Let desktop apps access your location” option.

Disable Location Services in Windows

6.2. Disable Location Services for Edge in Mac

Disable Location Services in Mac

7. Personalize Web Experience and Preload New Tab Page

Go to edge://settings/privacy in Edge address bar.

Scroll down on the settings page and disable the slider under “Personalize your web experience” section.

Disable Preload New Tab Page

8. Repair, Reset or Reinstall Edge

You can try to repair, reset or reinstall Edge as last options if none of the above options worked for you.

Repair Edge Browser

Note: Make sure you are not in any organizational network where Group Policy is maintained. Otherwise, you will see most of the above settings are greyed out and not available for editing.

Final Words

Though some of the above suggested options work to change new tab page language in Microsoft Edge, the automatic updates running in background can reset the browser back to its original state. You can disable automatic update or redo the steps again to change the language. This will be super annoying and hope Microsoft will soon allow changing the language from the settings page. otherwise, the best solution is to use an add-on to have a custom new tab page to overcome this problem.

How To Search Open Tabs In Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Opera Browsers

Working with multiple tabs makes it easier to collect information from different resources while doing online research. Though sometimes, it becomes overwhelming to have too many tabs opened. You search for something in a tab, keep reading it, and then switch to something else in a different tab. After opening a couple of tabs, you won’t be able to look at the title of a tab that lets you know what information it holds. Also, it becomes difficult to search for a specific word or phrase in a particular tab. To overcome these issues, most modern browsers nowadays offer a ‘Search Tabs‘ feature that lets you search across all the opened or recently closed tabs.

The Search Tabs feature allows you to:

See a list of open tabs across all browser windows.

Find a specific tab in a list of all open tabs and recently closed tabs.

Know when a specific tab has been opened or closed by seeing the timestamp (feature available in Chrome and Edge).

Search both title and content of open pages (a feature available in the Opera browser).

How do I search tabs in Windows? What happens if I have a lot of tabs open?

If you have a lot of tabs open in your web browser, your system may experience performance issues. This is because each tab consumes a fraction of your system’s RAM. The more tabs you open, the more RAM they utilize and your system will run out of RAM to manage other tasks. This may result in slowing down, freezing, or crashing your PC.

2 Ways To Use Tor In Firefox Browser

Tor is a product of the Tor Project. It refers to The Onion Router. Just like an onion which has multiple layers, the Tor network also sends traffic over multiple layers of relays, which makes it difficult for the website and other entities to figure out your IP address and location.

When you enter a website address in Tor, it encapsulates that request in three layers of encryption and passes it over to the relay to decrypt each layer one by one. These relays or nodes are run by volunteers. There are more than 6000 nodes around the globe.

Now that we have discussed the Tor network let us move on with the process of using Tor on the Firefox browser. This is achievable by two methods, which include changing the proxy settings and installing an add-on. Let us take a look at both of them with step-by-step instructions.

The first method to use the Tor network on Firefox is through configuring the proxy settings. This will allow you to seamlessly connect to the Onion network without having to download the Tor browser itself. It will also provide increased security while browsing the web on Firefox. Here is how you can do that.

Step 2: Go to Settings.

Step 6: Now, in the field next to the SOCKS host, enter 127.0.0.1, and in the field for Port, enter 9050.

Step 8: Under the field No proxy for, type localhost, 127.0.0.1.

Step 9: Now, choose Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5.

Step 11: Now go to chúng tôi and press Enter. You should see a message on the screen that says, “Congratulations, This browser is configured to use Tor.”

This means that you have successfully set up the Tor network in your browser.

Note: This method may or may not work for you as, in our case, the extension was not able to connect to Tor. Still, you can give it a try.

In case the above method is not working for you, then another way to use Tor and access .onion websites is via an extension called the Onion Browser Button. To use this add-on, you will first have to run a script on the Terminal of your PC with administrative access. This would allow the extension to connect to the Tor network so that you can browse websites without giving up your anonymity.

However, do note that this is a slightly involved method and requires you to run scripts with root privileges on the Terminal. So only proceed forward if you are comfortable with that.

Step 5: Now open Terminal with administrator access. Mac users can use the sudo prefix to get root privileges.

Step 6: In the Command Prompt, type cd followed by the location where the extracted folder is located.

Step 7: Next, type the command, following commands:

For Windows: run run.bat

You may have to enter the login password in macOS if required.

If the command runs successfully then the Terminal will show you the Tor Menu with a list of options.

Step 9: Now open Firefox, and in the address bar type about:config.

This will allow you to access onion websites in Firefox.

Step 12: Download the Onion Browser Button add-on.

Now you have successfully connected to the Tor proxy network and can browse the web with Tor.

As mentioned above, this method did not work for us as we tried on both Windows and MacOS but you can still give it a try. It is a slightly lengthy process but lets you browse the web anonymously.

No. Websites on the Dark web can only be accessed through the Tor browser as it supports .onion URLs. However, if you do want to visit the dark web using Firefox, you will have to change the proxy settings so that the browser can connect to the Tor network.

There could be a few reasons why you cannot visit .onion websites. First of all, make sure that you have entered and selected the correct proxy values. Secondly, go to about:config and search for network.dns.blockDotOnion the change its value to False. This should allow you to browse .onion websites on Firefox.

Tor is a free, open-source network managed by the Tor Project. It uses thousands of volunteer-hosted relays to route your data, which secures your IP address and masks your location. Whereas Firefox VPN is a paid service by Mozilla and requires a subscription.

This brings us to the end of this article. Having the ability to access the Tor network can help you access blocked websites as well as other content that is restricted in your region. I hope these methods work for you and you can successfully use the Tor network on Firefox. Do reach out to us if you face any issues or have any queries. Till then, stay tuned on BrowserToUse for more such articles, reviews, comparisons, and How-Tos.

How To Install Google Chrome Extensions In Microsoft Edge

When it was first announced, Microsoft’s decision to adopt Chromium code was met with skepticism. The launch of Edge, the company’s Chromium-based browser, is the latest attempt to dethrone Google Chrome. Gone are the days of Microsoft running its own proprietary software.

Download Edge

First, you need to start by downloading the latest version of the Edge browser. You can do that at chúng tôi and your existing browser will determine the appropriate download package. Edge is currently available for Windows 10, macOS and mobile software for both Android and iOS.

Building it on the same Chromium code base allows all desktop-based Edge users to tap into the incredibly large selection of Chrome extensions. Microsoft has its own selection of extensions as well, downloadable through the Microsoft Store. As of this writing, the native extension selection is rather limited. Honestly, that is okay, as there are so many Chrome extensions, Microsoft can take its sweet time to increase the native selection.

Finding the Extensions Menu

After Edge is installed on your computer, adding Chrome extensions is relatively easy. Once you have the hang of it, you’ll be installing extensions at will in just a few seconds. Let’s get started.

Enabling Third-Party Extensions Adding Extensions Warning

Consider this your first warning: Google Chrome extensions have not been tested in the Edge environment. What this means is that you might see memory leaks or a variety of other breakages. If you experience problems, try and uninstall extensions one at a time until you find the cause.

Uninstalling Chrome Extensions Conclusion

As Edge is likely to arrive as the default browser on Microsoft laptops in the future, there is a good chance it will see lots of market share. Knowing how to personalize and increase its functionality is important. Adding Chrome extensions makes an already good browser even better. Did the world need another Chromium browser? That’s a subject for another time, but in the interim, happy browsing!
