How A Bu Prof April

How a BU Prof April-Fooled the Country When the joke was on the Associated Press

Get the Flash Player to see this media.

Setting your roommate’s clock ahead a few hours. Pouring food coloring into your housemate’s shampoo. Hoisting a car on top of a roof (if you’re an MIT student, that is).

These are fine tricks to pull on April Fools’ Day, but putting over a prank that fools the country is reserved for a very few. Joseph Boskin, a professor emeritus of history in the College of Arts & Sciences, managed it without really trying.

In 1983, BU’s public relations office gave Boskin a call, with a question: was it OK to pitch him, a historian and a purveyor of popular culture, as an expert on the history of April Fools’ Day?

Not giving the request much thought, he jokingly said yes.

That week, he headed to Los Angeles to meet with director Norman Lear. Boskin planned to write a history of Lear’s series All in the Family. The PR contact reached him there, asking him to talk to a reporter from the Associated Press.

The AP reporter asked Boskin about the origins and history of April Fools’ Day. “I said, ‘I don’t know anything about the holiday, and I really can’t be of help to you,’” Boskin recalls. “The reporter said, ‘Don’t be so modest.’ When the reporter kept pushing, Boskin says, “I created a story.”

One of Boskin’s closest friends had always loved the Jewish noodle pudding kugel. That popped into his head, and he decided to tell a story about a jester who became king — King Kugel. One of Boskin’s fields was medieval history, so he concocted a convincing tale.

“Since I was calling New York, where kugel is famous, and it was April Fools’ Day, I figured he would catch on,” Boskin laughs. “Instead, he asked how to spell kugel.” As he was telling the outlandish story, he kept expecting the reporter to wise up to what he was doing, but all he heard was the clatter of a typewriter on the other end of the phone.

When AP published the story, Boskin got calls from the Today Show and other reputable news outlets asking him to go into more detail about the origins of King Kugel.

Back at BU, Boskin used the amusing scenario to show students in his Media and Social Change class how the media can suddenly pick up on a joke, a rumor, an innuendo, or a story and regard it as authentic. No matter what you hear, you must question, Boskin reminded his students.

Unbeknownst to him, the editor of the Daily Free Press was in his class. The next day, the Freep ran the headline, “Professor Fools AP.”

“The AP had a huge conniption when they read this,” Boskin says. “I got an immediate phone call from an editor there, who was furious, saying that I had ruined the career of a young reporter. He said I told a lie. ‘A lie?’ I asked, ‘I was telling an April Fools’ Day story.’

“The AP always, always checks on stories and for some reason this one fell through the cracks,” Boskin says. “It was their fault for not checking the story, and I embarrassed them. But I mean, really — kugel? What reporter from New York doesn’t know what that is?”

Fortunately for everyone, this April Fools’ story has a happy ending. Boskin’s prank did not ruin a young journalist’s career. Unintentionally, it might even have provided a little true-life case study for a wonderful teacher, because that young AP reporter was Fred Bayles, now an associate professor of journalism in the College of Communication.

6 Top Crypto Tokens Of April 2023

April 2023 has been one of the biggest months cryptocurrency has experienced since its decline started in 2023. Following the banking crisis, cryptocurrencies have dramatically increased in value as general investors begin to lose hope in traditional investment options.

This has resulted in a huge influx of new investors, however, some have been left feeling a little overwhelmed. Several large scale projects have continuously made headlines, while others offering even higher returns have stayed below the radar. Instead of spending hours researching these projects, here’s a breakdown of the top crypto tokens of April 2023.

Collateral Network (COLT) Creates Excitement With A Potential 35x ROI

While mainstream markets have focused on Bitcoin (BTC), Collateral Network (COLT) has been offering even higher returns for bullish investors. With a predicted ROI of 3500% in the next six months, Collateral Network (COLT) is making waves throughout the presale market and has already increased from $0.01 to $0.014.

With Collateral Network (COLT), users and SMEs can borrow against their physical assets to raise a loan on the blockchain. This enables them to liquidate high-value assets without needing to physically sell them.

Assets are brought on-chain as fractionalized NFTs after which lenders can offer loans via NFT fractions. As a result several lenders can get involved without needing to offer the full loan amount upfront. Lenders are incentivized to loan with fixed interest rates, which enables them to generate a passive income and theoretically become their own bank. Once the loan amount and interest has been repaid, the asset is then returned to the borrower.

Collateral Network (COLT) offers cross-chain integration and has been fully audited to guarantee the highest level of safety for users. All transactions are made on-chain and never impact a borrower’s credit rating. Transactions can also be made across countries, with borrowers receiving cash in just 24 hours.

If a borrower is unable to make their loan repayments, the asset is sold at a private auction for Collateral Network (COLT) token holders. During this auction, holders will be able to purchase the asset at below market value. However, this feature will only be available to token holders who purchase COLT tokens during the Collateral Network (COLT) project’s presale.

The Collateral Network (COLT) native token, COLT, is currently selling at $0.014 during the second stage of its presale. Investors holding tokens will earn rewards throughout the Collateral Network (COLT) ecosystem and will also have the opportunity to profit from price increases, with current estimates going as high as $0.35 in the next six months.

Cardano (ADA) Up 12% After March Disappointment

Cardano (ADA) is a proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain platform designed for innovators who want to see change in the global structure of the world. Cardano (ADA) lets developers build a range of decentralized applications and has become the 7th largest cryptocurrency in just a few years.

Throughout March, Cardano (ADA) experienced steady price declines and a significant drop in trading volume. However, Cardano (ADA) is now on the rise, with a 12.54% price increase in the last five days. This rise for Cardano (ADA) has been sparked by significant price surges in the crypto market, as well as the introduction of the Cardano (ADA) Lace wallet.

Lace will give investors access to all decentralized applications on Cardano (ADA) and is expected to increase Cardano (ADA) activity over the next few months.

Litecoin (LTC) Up 7% After Green Crypto Initiative Announcement

Litecoin (LTC) is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies in the market and a fork of Bitcoin. Litecoin (LTC) was created to prevent the monopolization of the Bitcoin mining market. Unfortunately, the Litecoin (LTC) project failed at this goal, however, Litecoin (LTC) now looks to revolutionize cryptocurrency mining throughout the entire industry.

Litecoin (LTC) recently announced that it will be working with Metalph Technology Holding Ltd (MATH), to create green crypto mining processes. These will include the reduction of carbon emissions and the use of renewable energy sources for mining.

Since its announcement, Litecoin (LTC) has increased in price by 7.44%, with one Litecoin (LTC) token selling for $94.05 at the time of writing. Given that crypto is being criticized for its lack of renewable initiatives, Litecoin (LTC) could be the first to take cryptocurrency on a new path.

Ethereum Classic (ETC) Price Increases Attract Bullish Investors

Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a great crypto token for investors looking for an Ethereum alternative. Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a fork of Ethereum and works as a smart contract network.

Ethereum Classic (ETC) looks to solve many of the issues associated with Ethereum. Ethereum Classic (ETC) first started to preserve the integrity of the Ethereum blockchain, after a hacking event caused the loss of 3.6 million ETH.

Over the past thirty days, Ethereum Classic (ETC) has increased in price by 7.51%, with recent upwards trends triggering a price increase for Ethereum Classic (ETC) of 9.63% in the last five days alone, also sparking a rise in trading volume for Ethereum Classic (ETC).

The Sandbox (SAND) Connects GameFi And Real World Business With Its Gucci Collaboration

The Sandbox (SAND) has already attracted attention from international businesses such as HSBC and TIME, and recently announced The Sandbox (SAND) will be collaborating with Gucci. Although the details of this collaboration have not been announced, The Sandbox (SAND) has increased in price from $0.58 to $0.65 in just a few weeks, with The Sandbox (SAND) investors eagerly awaiting more information.

Polkadot (DOT) Investors Turn Bullish After Recent Price Increases

Polkadot (DOT) has increased in price by 5.90% in the past five days, following the announcement of its partnership with Stellar Network. The partnership is believed to enhance the Polkadot (DOT) usability and has caused several price increases.

In less than two weeks, Polkadot (DOT) has increased in price from $6.16 to $6.58, with bullish investors believing Polkadot (DOT) could hit $7 should it be pushed higher by current trends in the crypto market.

Tips for your April social media calendar

As you’re planning your local marketing for April, be sure to remember these social media tips:

Remember your goals

As April kicks off the second quarter of the year, you’ll want to ensure your social media strategy aligns with your overall marketing goals. If you don’t already have measurable social media metrics in place, you can still set some up by looking at any business challenges.

Try walking through a SWOT analysis exercise for your accounts to identify where your social media goals should land. This will help you to shape your social plan and decide which post ideas are best.

Check your website

You could have the best social media plan in the world, but if your website is not running efficiently, your efforts will be fruitless. Since one of the points of social media is to drive traffic to your website, you’ll want to check that your site is in tip-top shape before going live.

You can also conduct a quick social media audit yourself–using these steps and the template we created!

Follow social media trends

In order for your posts to not only get found but also rise in popularity, you’ll want to be sure that you’re following hot social media marketing trends. However, as a business owner, you don’t necessarily have time to be scrolling all day to know what’s trending. That’s why influencer marketing is a great alternative for brands that want to stay on top of what’s popular.

Micro-influencers are the perfect solution for this, as they typically have a following of less than 50,000, which makes them more approachable for a business looking to grow. Plus, it’s an influencer’s job to know what’s trending on social media. This means that collaborating with an influencer will make it easier for your business to serve relevant and popular April social media content.

Find your creative flow

While an inclusive marketing strategy should be something your business strives for year-round, it’s all that much more important during April since this is when National Diversity Month is celebrated. Having started in 2004, this April observance was created to celebrate diversity all around us. Here’s how your business can take part:

Highlight how your business commits to inclusivity by showcasing efforts you’ve made to cultivate diversity in your workforce.

Spread awareness for issues within your community centered around diversity, equity, and inclusion. For example, did you know that for every dollar a man earns, women on average make 18 cents less? Plus, that gender pay gap increases when you break it out for women of color. Your April social media post for diversity month could highlight this as something small businesses like yours should work towards ending. Alternatively, you could provide a series of posts that share resources and tools for your female followers can use to fairly estimate and negotiate equal pay.

When you open up to your followers about autism, you’ll be showcasing how your brand is accepting of people of all ability levels. This means you’ll also be following the best practice of fitting diversity and inclusion in your marketing.

Run a fundraiser for your local autism research or care center. Your followers will appreciate your brand giving back. Consumers prefer to do business with companies that are active in their communities, so a socially conscious post will increase your brand loyalty.

Host a stress-relieving event! Whether it be a virtual yoga class or a silent shopping hour in-store, encourage your followers to join you for a stress-relieving activity. This will be a win-win as you can create buzz for the event beforehand, and post pictures from it after.

April 30: International Jazz Day

Jazz is known as “America’s classical music” since it began in New Orleans over 100 years ago. With such a rich history behind this music genre, there’s no reason to not post about it with these Jazz Day social media ideas:

Highlight a prolific person in Jazz history that inspires you. There are plenty of inspirational people from the world of jazz, like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and more your followers will love to learn about.

Post a jazz song for your followers to listen to. Connecting with your audience through music is a unique way to give your social media strategy a more intimate feel. You could even take it a step further by creating a jazz playlist on a music streaming platform that your followers can listen to or share out—which will help you build your brand’s community.

April social post ideas (not about holidays!)

If April social media holidays don’t mesh with your business, we’ve got you covered with these social media ideas that aren’t holiday related:

Post a series of springtime tips

Whether it be post-winter yard cleanup, garden prep, or spring and summer vacation planning, any tips you can provide your followers to get ready for spring are bound to help your business stand out in news feeds. For example, you could do a series of your recommended springtime to-do list items—which will leave your followers coming back for more.

Give a business update

If nothing major has changed about your business, that’s okay too. With the second quarter of the year starting, this is the perfect time to relay a pulse check to your followers about how your business is doing so far in 2023. Share what exciting plans you may have coming in the second half of the year.

Switch up your product positioning

Once spring arrives and major holidays like Christmas and Valentine’s Day have passed, people no longer have to shop for others. Odds are that, in April, your customers will have a larger budget to spend on themselves rather than others. They may even be eager to buy gifts for themselves with gift cards they’ve received over the holidays.

If you’ve previously framed a product or service your business offers as a gift, now is the time to post about how it could work for personal use. Try posting an image highlighting all the personal reasons why someone might want to do business with you. Springtime often calls for marketing plan refreshment, so your product positioning on social media should be no different.

April social media holidays and ideas can bring May results

The results your business will see from these social media ideas are no April Fools’ Day joke. Plus, with a strong marketing strategy backing your social media ideas, your social media presence will be unstoppable.

Once you have your ideas for the month planned out, you can schedule your posts regularly to help you maintain brand consistency. However, if executing on posts is still a hurdle, see how our products and services can help you have the most amazing April yet!
