AT&T has been at the forefront of 5G since late 2023. The telco turned on 5G network in twelve U.S. cities last December and more recently, seven more cities got the nod, making it a total of nineteen cities with access to AT&T 5G services as of April 30.

With this coverage, AT&T boasts of the widest 5G reach among the four major U.S. carriers to date. The company has even run multiple speed tests with results of up to 2Gbps being reported, however, there is still no consumer-ready 5G phone to verify this claim. For now, AT&T is using NETGEAR’s Nighthawk mobile hotspot to carry out the tests.

While it’s clear that AT&T’s strategy is to get going with 5G as soon as possible, the question here is what is the company actually doing to realize this?

In this post, we talk about the current state of AT&T’s 5G network, 5G phones, pricing and when the speedy mobile network arrives.

AT&T 5GE

The 5GE icon started showing up in late 2023

But 5GE is not anywhere close to true 5G

The 5GE icon is a placeholder for true 5G

First, let’s take on the elephant in the room – 5GE.

When the talk about 5G was beginning to pick up late last year, AT&T started replacing the LTE icon on smartphones with a 5GE icon in an exercise that took into account over 400 markets across the country.

Dubbed 5G Evolution, this is the same network that is known as LTE Advanced elsewhere, but for some reason, AT&T thought it’s cool to associate it with 5G. According to the carrier, though, this was only meant to prepare customers for the arrival of true 5G.

So, if you see your AT&T phone with a 5GE icon, don’t be confused to think that you have access to 5G network. In fact, unless you have a Samsung Galaxy S10 5G or LG V50 ThinQ (which you obviously don’t), your current phone doesn’t support 5G connectivity.

AT&T 5G cities

AT&T 5G started rolling out in late 2023

Up to 19 cities are already covered

Chicago and Minneapolis to get 5G later in the year

As already pointed out, AT&T started rolling out 5G in late 2023 and so far, the network is available in 19 U.S. cities.

Here is the full list so far:

California – Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose

Florida – Jacksonville, Orlando

Georgia – Atlanta

Indiana – Indianapolis

Kentucky – Louisville

Louisiana – New Orleans

North Carolina – Charlotte, Raleigh

Oklahoma – Oklahoma City

Tennessee – Nashville

Texas – Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Waco

AT&T is expected to continue rolling out 5G network in more cities as the year progresses, with Chicago and Minneapolis among the cities in question.

AT&T 5G speeds

AT&T is already testing 5G speeds

Speeds of up to 2Gbps recorded in Atlanta

10 seconds is enough to download a 2-hour HD movie

AT&T has been quite busy in the build-up to the official launch of 5G in the country. The carrier has run a couple or so speed tests with some interesting results.

In the first tests, AT&T reported having reached speeds of between 200Mbps and 300Mbps and in early April 2023, it shot to 1Gbps. Not long after, things got even faster, with speeds of up to 2Gbps being recorded in Atlanta using NETGEAR Nighthawk mobile hotspot. Looking at the maximum downlink speed the Huawei Mate X (image above) can achieve, it’s clear there’s still room for improvement.

AT&T says that with such a speedy network, you only need 10 seconds to download a 2-hour HD movie. But of course, we all know it’s hard for a device/network to maintain such speeds.

Unlike T-Mobile whose 5G strategy involves using a combination of mmWave, mid-band and low-band spectrums to deliver true 5G to all, AT&T is relying on mmWave to deliver 5G to its customers. While its true mmWave promises better speeds and more capacity, coverage is limited to a small area like urban centers, a fully packed stadium or concert.

Also, the transmission of mmWave signals can easily be affected by things like walls, which means you are likely to lose 5G signal on your phone when you enter a building. On the brighter side, AT&T is said to be working on a sub-6GHz spectrum that will cover the wider America by 2023.

AT&T 5G phones

AT&T currently has no 5G phone

But early adopters can get the NETGEAR Nighthawk mobile hotspot

Samsung Galaxy S10 5G will be the first phone

LG V50 ThinQ, Galaxy Note 10 also expected

But where are these 5G phones and devices? You may ask.

One of the smartphones that have been confirmed to support 5G is the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. However, it’s only available through Verizon Wireless, at least for the time being (official shipping begins on May 16). AT&T is expected to bring the S10 5G to its stores at some point, but it’s not known when. From the look of things, though, it should happen probably before the end of Q2 2023.

Another 5G phone is the LG V50 ThinQ. This one will begin selling in the U.S. in May 2023 through Sprint before arriving on AT&T and other carriers later on. When exactly AT&T will begin carrying it is also unknown at the moment.

We also know that Samsung Galaxy Note 10 will support 5G. Granted, this device should come to AT&T in the second half of the year, which is when we expect to see more 5G devices arriving on the market.

AT&T 5G data plans

AT&T 5G data currently goes for $70/mo. for 15GB

Data plans to be revised within 2-3 years

Tiered pricing expected

The excitement around 5G is mainly about the new speeds it promises. I mean, who wouldn’t be excited by the prospects of downloading a 2-hour HD movie in just 10 seconds?

While it’s good and all to have such unimaginable internet speeds, AT&T customers will have to incur a higher cost than what they pay for the current 4G LTE data. Apparently, the carrier plans to introduce tiered 5G data plans, meaning those who wish to get maximum 5G speeds will have to pay extra.

On the brighter side, AT&T says this pricing format will not take effect immediately, but probably after two to three years.

Those who have already bought the NETGEAR Nighthawk mobile hotspot are paying $70 per month for 15GB of 5G data. Compared to the base plan of $70 per month for unlimited LTE data, we can already guess that AT&T 5G data plans will be quite pricey.

Conclusion

AT&T didn’t paint a good picture of itself with the push for 5GE, but the carrier will be excited that at least this got the AT&T 5G topic going. Since then, Sprint has even sued it, something that AT&T must have relished since it helped put them in the 5G headlines. With more efforts being deployed, it won’t be long before the customers begin enjoying 5G network on AT&T.

Also, the use of mmWave means AT&T 5G network will initially be reserved for those in urban centers, with the rest having to wait until 2023 or later.

Disk Stuck At 100 Percent At Startup, But Nothing Running

If your Disk usage is stuck at 100% at the startup, but nothing is running, you can follow these tips to get the problem fixed. As it makes your PC slower than usual, you need to take every step cautiously. Whether you get this issue on Windows 11, Windows 10, or any other version, you can follow the same set of solutions to troubleshoot this problem.

Disk stuck at 100 percent at startup, but nothing running

If the Disk is stuck at 100% at startup, but no programs are yet running on your Windows 11/10 PC, follow these solutions:

Remove Startup programs

Unplug all external devices

Pause Windows Update temporarily

Turn off Print Spooler service temporarily

Run CHKDSK

Update Device Drivers

Run System File Checker

To learn more about these tips and tricks, continue reading.

1] Remove Startup programs

It is the first thing you must do when your Disk usage is stuck at 100%. At times, some people forget to check the startup apps list frequently. If that happens to you too, you might encounter the same issue. As startup apps consume a lot of Memory and other CPU resources, you need to remove or diable Startup programs to make the disk usage lower than 100%.

To remove apps from startup, follow these steps:

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open the Task Manager.

Switch to the Startup apps tab.

Find the Enabled apps and select them.

2] Unplug all external devices

At times, you might plug in an external hard disk, printer, audio device, your mobile phone, etc., to your computer and leave them. When you restart your computer, your system needs to run all the processes and services to make them useful for you again. That is how your computer consumes so much disk space. This is the reason why it is recommended to unplug all the external devices and check if it resolves the issue or not.

3] Pause Windows Update temporarily

When you start your computer, Windows Update starts checking for available updates automatically in the background. This is why this particular service or functionality requires some amount of CPU resources, including disk space. You can Pause Windows Update temporarily and check if it vanishes your problem or not.

4] Turn off Print Spooler service temporarily

Print Spooler service is essential for all printer users. This in-built service mainly stores data or pending printing jobs. Even if you shut down your computer, it doesn’t remove the stored data. That is why it needs some disk space to store your data. To turn off the Print Spooler service in Windows 11/10, follow this detailed guide.

5] Run CHKDSK

At times, this problem may occur due to an error on your disk. The best way to resolve such disk errors is by using the CHKDSK tool.

In case you don’t know, this is an in-built utility, which recognizes and fixes common disk errors automatically. No matter whether you have installed one or more than one HDD or SSD, you can run this utility on your hard drive. For your information, you can run this tool from Command Prompt as well as using the GUI option.

6] Update Device Drivers

Corrupted drivers can cause this issue, hence update your Device Drivers and see.

7] Run System File Checker

Run System File Checker to replace potentially corrupted system files that may be causing this issue.

Why is my disk at 100% when nothing is open?

There could be several reasons why your disk is stuck at 100% even when nothing is open on your computer. The main reason why this problem arises is the unnecessary apps assigned to be run at the startup. The second reason could be the plugged-in external devices, such as external hard drives, printers, audio devices, etc. Windows often runs some Services and processes in the background to make those devices run smoothly. These Windows Services can be safely disabled.

Why does my HDD say 100%?

If your HDD displays a 100% usage message, you need to add additional storage. However, you can delete some unnecessary files from your computer to make free space temporarily. However, if you do not have anything to be removed, the easiest way to get rid of this problem is by installing a secondary hard drive.

12 Things Siri Is Actually Good At

Apple’s digital assistant is one of the company’s more limited offerings. While she’s not as powerful as competitors like Google Assistant, Siri’s abilities have improved over time. There are some tasks that are actually easier with Siri than without. Here are a few good reasons to actually use Siri.

1. Set a Timer

I don’t use Siri all the time, but when I do, I’m setting a timer. Activate Siri and say “Set a timer for 10 minutes,” and Siri will automatically start the countdown. Excellent for cooking.

2. Add Calendar Events

3. Make a Note

I tend to get a lot of ideas while I’m driving, but that’s not really a situation where pen and paper is easily accessible. I use Siri to take notes instead. The voice trigger for this command is fairly flexible. Start with something like “Note to self…” or “Make a note…” and Siri will create a new item in Notes containing whatever you say afterwards.

4. Spell a Word

Pronouncing a word and spelling a word are two bits of knowledge that are only loosely related. Rather than typing incorrect permutations and hoping AutoCorrect catches your meaning, check the spelling through Siri. Just say “Spell definitely,” for example, and Siri will reply with a text box showing the word. She’ll also spell it out loud, which could be embarrassing or helpful, depending on your location.

5. Check the Weather

Get quick weather updates through Siri’s voice commands. You can trigger this one with a wide variety of voice commands, from a conversational “How’s the weather?” to a more direct “What’s the temperature?” Either way, you’ll get a quick summary of current conditions by voice. You can also check the screen for the day’s hourly forecast.

6. Calculate a Tip

Ask Siri “What’s 20% of thirty-five dollars and forty-six cents?” and she’ll reply with the correct answer, $7.09. This is especially useful if you forget how to calculate percentages after you’ve had a few drinks.

7. Get Sports Stats

There’s a very specific set of structured data that Siri can fetch, and sports stats are almost perfectly suited for that ability. Ask “What was the score of the Super Bowl?” to get a quick voice summary and a more detailed info box. You can also get a more complete picture by asking something like, “How’s Manchester United doing?” As you can see, the correct answer to the second question is “poorly.”

8. Search the Dictionary

You can also use Siri to find the definition of words. Say “What’s the definition of inconceivable?” and Siri will reply verbally. This might be another context-dependent usage, but it’s great for words you’ve heard spoken but don’t know how to spell.

9. Search Your Own Photos

While Siri’s strongest suit might be web-based querying, that’s not all she can do. You can also search your phone’s own photos using Siri. Say “Find pictures of cats” to see all the photos of cats that you’ve taken. It’s not guaranteed to get every image of cats, but it does a decent job.

10. Find a Movie to See

Say “Search movie times” to see a list of the movies that are currently playing nearby. The well-organized UI for this information is the most valuable part since it makes it easy to see what movies are out now and if they’re any good. Tap on a movie’s poster image to see a description, and then tap “Playing at…” to see the list of theaters current showing the film.

11. Start Your Workout

Thanks to the third-party integrations that Apple added in iOS 10, Siri can now trigger events in non-Apple apps. One of the most useful integrations is starting a workout. Just say “Start a run with MapMyRun” to begin tracking your workout. This will also work with Runtastic, Zova, and Nike+.

12. Get a Ride with Uber or Lyft

Catch a ride with Siri’s third-party Uber and Lyft integration. Say “Take me home in an UberX,” for example, and Siri will generate a request matching those parameters. Confirm the request, and wait for your ride.

Conclusion

Siri has not yet reached the level of an all-purpose digital assistant, but she’s getting there. Take the time to experiment with what she can do: you might just be surprised at how helpful she can be.

At&T Pulls Bid For T

We had an inclination that it was coming, especially when the AT&T and T-Mobile merger was withdrawn from the FCC, but AT&T just confirmed in a press release that it agreed to kill the $39 billion purchase of T-Mobile USA announced in March. The result of the decision is AT&T both paying the agreed to $4 billion pretax charge by Q4 2011, as well as entering “a mutually beneficial roaming agreement with Deutsche Telekom”.

AT&T chairperson and CEO Randall Stephenson said this, regarding the issue:

AT&T will continue to be aggressive in leading the mobile Internet revolution. Over the past four years we have invested more in our networks than any other U.S. company…To meet the needs of our customers, we will continue to invest. However, adding capacity to meet these needs will require policymakers to do two things. First, in the near term, they should allow the free markets to work so that additional spectrum is available to meet the immediate needs of the U.S. wireless industry, including expeditiously approving our acquisition of unused Qualcomm spectrum currently pending before the FCC. Second, policymakers should enact legislation to meet our nation’s longer-term spectrum needs.

The full press-release from Stephenson is shown below.

DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) said today that after a thorough review of options it has agreed with Deutsche Telekom AG to end its bid to acquire T-Mobile USA, which began in March of this year.

“To meet the needs of our customers, we will continue to invest”

The actions by the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice to block this transaction do not change the realities of the U.S. wireless industry. It is one of the most fiercely competitive industries in the world, with a mounting need for more spectrum that has not diminished and must be addressed immediately. The AT&T and T-Mobile USA combination would have offered an interim solution to this spectrum shortage. In the absence of such steps, customers will be harmed and needed investment will be stifled.

“AT&T will continue to be aggressive in leading the mobile Internet revolution,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and CEO. “Over the past four years we have invested more in our networks than any other U.S. company. As a result, today we deliver best-in-class mobile broadband speeds – connecting smartphones, tablets and emerging devices at a record pace – and we are well under way with our nationwide 4G LTE deployment.

“To meet the needs of our customers, we will continue to invest,” Stephenson said. “However, adding capacity to meet these needs will require policymakers to do two things.

“The mobile Internet is a dynamic industry that can be a critical driver in restoring American economic growth and job creation, but only if companies are allowed to react quickly to customer needs and market forces,” Stephenson said.

To reflect the break-up considerations due Deutsche Telekom, AT&T will recognize a pretax accounting charge of $4 billion in the 4th quarter of 2011. Additionally, AT&T will enter a mutually beneficial roaming agreement with Deutsche Telekom.

AT&T provides various TV solutions for its customers, but as you may know, their services are restricted so that only US residents can access and pay for them.

For instance, TV NOW (formerly DIRECTV NOW), or AT&T U-verse are some of the TV/entertainment services provided by AT&T.

Although the services are meant to be accessed exclusively by US residents, there is a fairly large number of users who try to circumvent geo-restrictions.

AT&T usually picks up on VPN traffic and blocks it before users can actually access the content or purchase a subscription.

However, every once in a while, some VPN users are lucky enough to fall through the cracks and get in. The bright side is that these users can access AT&T services as if they were in the US. For the most part.

The not-so-bright-side is that, depending on their VPN client, the functionality of the service might be affected. For instance, it’s possible that not all channels will appear within the service.

One of the most common issues we could pick up online was related to the Paramount Channel.

A while back, AT&T had a channel in their grid called Spike TV. Subsequently, that channel disappeared and Paramount Network came to replace it. Ever since then, users complain about Paramount not being displayed/recognized correctly.

How to fix AT&T not recognizing Paramount Channel? 1. Make sure you have the right plan

AT&T provides you with several user plans, and some of them don’t include Paramount Channel in their grid. For that reason, you need to make sure that the plan you’re paying for includes Paramount Channel.

If you’re using TV Now Plus on Kodi, for instance, you might not be able to see Paramount because it’s not included in the plan. The AT&T TV Now Max plan, however, does include Paramount.

So it’s quite important that you check very carefully if the reason why you can’t see Paramount is, in fact, not having it in your plan, to begin with.

2. Use a VPN

Considering a well researched comparison of the best VPN for AT&T U-Verse, here is our pick and a quick guide on how to install it to solve the issue straightaway.

Download Private Internet Access

Install it on your computer

Connect to a US server (make sure it’s a low-ping one for best results)

Check if the problem still persists

If your Paramount Channel (Network) isn’t displayed in the area you’re in, it’s very likely that you’re facing geo-restrictions. In this case, using a VPN might solve your problem altogether.

Private Internet Access is an excellent VPN service from Kape Technologies that can easily bypass geo-restrictions. In order to make it work with AT&T, make sure you select a US server, to avoid any geoblocking.

Note that sometimes, different US servers might trigger TV Now or U-verse to display different content. Therefore, if the channel you’re looking for doesn’t appear on the list (even though it should), just switch to another US server.

3. Use a Smart DNS service

As we’ve mentioned above, VPN traffic is usually detected by AT&T and blocked altogether. The same goes for proxy. In fact, a proxy is even easier to detect than a VPN. In order to avoid that, you might consider using a Smart DNS service.

What a Smart DNS does is remove your ISP-assigned DNS address and grants you a new one, stripped of metadata that indicates your real geolocation. As a result, the service you’re trying to access detects you in the DNS-assigned location.

For the strict purpose of circumventing geo-restrictions, using a Smart DNS is oftentimes better than a VPN. For starters, there’s no encryption, and as a result, you benefit from a higher speed.

On the downside, you’re completely exposed to various threatening factors, since your IP isn’t hidden, and traffic isn’t encrypted.

We understand that this is what you’ve been trying to avoid, but if everything else fails, you might as well address your issue to the ones responsible for allowing it.

If you’re doing everything right, are entitled to access AT&T services (live and are located in the US at the time being) and you’re sure that Paramount Channel should be on your channel list, AT&T should be able to fix it.

Or at least offer you some suggestions on how you might fix the issue.

AT&T Paramount Channel issues can be fixed

All things considered, if you encounter issues with accessing Paramount Channel on AT&T, you might be able to fix them. Whether by using a VPN or Smart DNS, or even contacting AT&T’s support crew, there’s always a way to sort things out.

However, you should understand that using a VPN to access geo-restricted content is usually frowned upon. Therefore, even if you can circumvent this issue for now by using a VPN, the situation may shift at some point.
