Logitech’S G Cloud Beats The Steam Deck In These 5 Ways

In a way, the G Cloud also rivals the Nintendo Switch, but the Steam Deck feels – and looks – like a closer rival to Logitech’s handheld console so that’s what I’m focusing on here. 

1. Price 

Let’s start with how much these devices cost. You might think it’s irrelevant as both consoles have the same RRP of $349, but Logitech is selling the G Cloud for $299 up until the launch date of 17 October.

Assuming Logitech doesn’t have the same issues as Valve, you won’t have to wait months and months for it to arrive either.

2. Size & weight 

It’s well known that the Steam Deck is a bit of a beast. Put it in the supplied carry case and into your rucksack and you’ll barely have room for anything else in there. 

The Deck weighs 669g but Logitech has somehow managed to keep the G Cloud Gaming Handheld to a more manageable 463g – over 30% lighter. 

It’s also more compact, despite having the same screen size, at 257 x 117 x 33mm compared to the Steam Deck’s 298 x 117x 49mm. And those G Cloud numbers are rounded up! 

3. Screen 

The G Cloud’s 7in screen outpaces the Steam Deck in a couple of ways. 

First, it has a higher resolution of Full HD (1920 x 1080) compared to HD (1280 x 800) so you get a much higher number of pixels per inch – 315ppi compared to 215ppi. 

Second, Logitech quotes a higher brightness level of 450 nits, which is 50 nits more than Valve. It’s not a huge difference, but brighter is better.

4. Services & Apps 

This might seem obvious for a device built around cloud gaming but the G Cloud has much better access to services and apps than the Steam Deck. It’s got Xbox Game Pass, Nvidia GeForce Now, Steam Link and Google Play. 

Granted, you can get Xbox Game Pass on the Steam Deck but it’s not native as you need to use Microsoft’s Edge browser as a workaround. 

Google Play, though, is a real highlight as it means you can play Android games as well as run apps including Chrome and YouTube. And that makes the G Cloud a much more versatile device. 

5. Battery Life 

Valve quotes a battery life of 2-8 hours for the Steam Deck and I don’t know anyone getting close to the upper figure, especially when gaming. 

The Logitech can run for a lot longer: four full hours more than Valve’s optimistic eight-hour claim. Logitech says the G Cloud will manage 12+ hours.

Is the Logitech G Cloud a no-brainer? 

Logitech’s handheld might have won those particular battles, but the G Cloud Gaming Handheld doesn’t beat the Steam Deck on everything. 

While they look almost identical, they have very different approaches to gaming. As the name suggests, the G Cloud is designed for cloud gaming and as such has a smartphone-level processor (a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G). 

It doesn’t need more power, because Nvidia’s GeForce Now service does all the grunt work. This, as well as Xbox Game Pass, both require you to subscribe in order to play games so it’s important to bear those extra costs in mind.

It’s also worth noting that that the G Cloud doesn’t have 5G for an internet connection when you’re away from a Wi-Fi network.

The Steam Deck might not have the greatest battery life but it’s a powerful device with an AMD APU that uses Zen 2 architecture and has 16GB of RAM. That means you don’t need a good internet connection for games to run smoothly, wherever you happen to be. 

Plus, since the Steam Desk is a Valve device, it’s also better suited to those with big libraries of Steam games rather than those who want to sign up to Xbox Game Pass.

Understanding the difference between hot and cold data

As a colleague of mine is fond of saying, “Fast, cheap or good.  Choose two.  You can’t have all three.” Data solutions naturally fall along a performance and cost continuum. Solutions on the “hot” end of the spectrum feature high performance and high availability, which are ideal for mission-critical data that needs to be accessed quickly and frequently with zero downtime. Solutions on the “cold” end of the spectrum are more cost-effective per GB and are ideal for data that is rarely accessed, or that can afford to be accessed with higher latency.  

Why even keep cold data if you don’t access it, you ask? Often, cold data is kept to meet specific and important industry regulations and compliance requirements, such as HIPPA. Organizations that choose not to keep their cold data often open themselves up to regulatory infractions and possible fines.

The first step in choosing your cloud storage solution should be to determine where on the spectrum your data lies, i.e. how to “tier” your data.  To do this, it’s important to understand the different solution tiers and how they differ in performance.  Considering what storage tiers best meet your needs is the best approach to achieving a successful, ongoing storage strategy.

Tiering your hot, warm and cold data in the cloud

Tier 0 – Tier 0 is relatively new, since the cost and reliability of solid state drives (SSDs) has only recently made them practical in the mainstream market.  In terms of hot and cold, this storage option is smokin’ hot.  Solid state drives can deliver up to 30 times the performance of the fastest spinning hard drive, while using a fraction of the space and power.  In Tier 0, you’ll experience extremely high input/output operations per second (IOPS) and extremely low latency, which results in accelerated online transaction processing and shortened batch processing, for example.  Unfortunately, SSD’s still come at a very high cost. Tier 0 is the fastest and the best, which means it is also the most expensive per GB.  

Tier 1 – Tier 1 is usually comprised of redundant, high performance drives, offering quick response times and fast data transfer rates.  These solutions offer very high IOPS and very low latency, but high cost. Tier 1 solutions should be used sparingly, but are typically an essential element of any enterprise-class company’s portfolio.

Tier 2 – Tier 2 is your primary tier for active data, and probably is where most of your data should live.  It typically features enterprise SATA drives that favor capacity over performance, with medium IOPS, medium latency, and medium cost.

Tier 3 – Tier 3 storage should be used for data that is rarely accessed but still needed. In other words, Tier 3 is your first tier for archiving and can be classified as warm storage on the spectrum. These solutions feature low IOPS and relatively high latency, but hopefully low costs.  The performance of Tier 3 solutions still crushes that in Tier 4.  This is perhaps the most underserved tier in the marketplace with vast price ranges.  There are, however, several affordable Tier 3 solutions available with excellent archiving performance.

Tier 4 – Tier 4 is your final line of cold data tiering, and should be reserved for your “offline” data since it’s almost always stored on tape or off-line drives. There are very low to no IOPS, extremely high latency (order of days), and extremely low cost. This tier should be reserved for data that is being kept for backup or compliance purposes only.  Watch out for recovery costs if you plan to use a Tier 4 solution.  Although this can be the cheapest storage on the market, many Tier 4 solutions have a high cost associated with recovering your information.

Storing data in its optimal tier

To best optimize your data, your organization must agree on storage requirements. This is the final frontier in achieving and implementing a cloud storage strategy that best fits your company’s needs. You must also consider the importance of disaster recovery, energy consumption, IT manpower – and the related cost implications. For example, not every file needs to be encrypted or de-duplicated, and implementing those features on every file will only raise costs and lower performance.

At the end of the day, by taking the time to understand the data you want to store in the cloud, which tier it best fits in, how often you’ll need to access it, its place among your business activities, and the features you require to store it, you’ll be on the path to successfully backing up your business assets and utilizing the cloud to its fullest potential.

How To Batch Edit In Lightroom (Step

What do you do when you have 857 photos to edit and only a couple of days to do it? If you said to drink lots of coffee and pull an all-nighter, you really need to read this article!

Hello! I’m Cara and as a professional photographer, I kind of have a love/hate relationship with photo editing. 

Firstly, I love it because editing is the cherry on top. A little dodging and burning here, a little color correction there, and suddenly you have an outstanding image. Plus, four different photographers can take the same image and make four distinct images. It’s awesome!

However, editing is also time-consuming and that’s what I don’t like about it. And there’s a lot of busy work with the same edits that need to be done on every one of those 857 images. 

What if you could make all those basic edits at once! You absolutely can when you learn how to batch edit in Lightroom. Let’s take a look!

Batch Editing with Presets

The quickest way to edit multiple images is to simply apply a preset to a bunch of photos at once. Don’t have any good presets to use? Learn how to make your own presets here.

Once you’ve got your preset ready, it’s super simple to apply it. 

If you want to select all the images currently in your filmstrip at the bottom, press Ctrl + A or Command + A. check out this article for more helpful Lightroom shortcuts.

Step 2: With your selections made, go to the Presets panel on the left underneath the Navigator window. 

Scroll through and choose whichever preset you want to apply to the images. I’ll grab a black and white preset so you can easily see the changes I’m making.

Choose the preset and it will be applied to only the first image. What happened? 

No worries, it’s not done yet. 

Step 3: Press the Sync button on the right under the editing panels. 

This box will pop up asking which types of edits you would like to sync. 

Step 4: Check the boxes (or check all to save time) and press Synchronize.

This will apply the selected settings to all the selected images.

Batch Editing Manually

What if you don’t have a preset and will be making a bunch of changes to the image? 

You can use the same technique. Simply make all your changes to one image. When you’re ready, select all the images and hit the Sync button. 

Another option is to make edits simultaneously. You’ll notice a little toggle switch to the left of the Sync button. Flip this and the Sync button changes to Auto Sync.

Now, any changes you make to any of the selected images will automatically be applied to all the selected images. 

Note: depending on your system, Lightroom can be slow when using this method, especially when using tools that take a lot of power. 

Batch Editing in the Library Module

There’s one other quick method you can use in the Library module. This is handy when you’re picking and choosing lots of images. Instead of scrolling back and forth on the film strip, you can choose the images from the grid.

Step 1: Press G on the keyboard to jump to the Grid view in the Library module. As before, select the images you want to edit. Hold Shift for consecutive images or Ctrl or Command for non-consecutive ones. 

Pro tip: Select the consecutive images first, then select the individuals.

This will open your list of presets. 

All the preset settings will automatically be applied to your selected images.

Making Your Images Awesome

Of course, though using presets saves a ton of time, individual images may still need a few tweaks. Visit each of your batch edited images to see how they look and apply any other edits. 

Yes, you’ll still have to look at each of your 857 images individually, but you won’t have to painstakingly apply the same 24 basic edits to each one. Imagine the time you’ve saved!

How To Edit Beautiful Fall Photos With Your Iphone

As the leaves turn from green to bright yellow and red, the fall is one of the best times of the year for landscape photography with the iPhone. When ordinary landscapes change into magnificent vistas, it’s really hard not to take photos of all that beauty.

However, when you look back at your photos, you’ll often be disappointed to see that the iPhone hasn’t reproduced the fall colors as you expected, and the photos just look boring in comparison to the same scene in real life. Fortunately, this can be corrected in post-processing, and in this article I’ll show you a simple Snapseed post-processing workflow that will bring your fall photos back to life by making their colors much more vibrant.

While the fall is well on its way in most of Europe and North America, other parts of the world have different seasons. It’s spring in Australia and permanent summer in tropical regions. However, the same editing workflow can also be used to greatly improve sunset photos, so you should also give it a try if you live in other parts of the world…

The original photo

Here is the photo that I’ll be using for this editing workflow. Since I took this photo in early fall, the leaves are rather pale, but you can already see that the trees in the background have different tones, which I want to emphasize more in post-processing.

Step 1: cropping

The three most important subjects in this image are the river, the large orange rock, and the regular rock at the bottom left. They are all located within a relatively narrow area in the central part of the photo, which means that I could emphasize them more by cropping the image into a 3:2 aspect ratio (the iPhone shoots in 4:3 aspect ratio).

To do this I opened the “Crop” module in Snapseed, selected 3:2 in the aspect ratio panel at the bottom, and adjusted the composition until I found something that I really liked.

Step 2: adding structure

Next I opened the “Details” module and increased structure to +20, which helped me make the different details in the photo stand out more. This works particularly well for trees in the background, which are now better defined and stand out more. However, you want to be very careful with the structure adjustment as it looks really bad if you do it too much.

You can find the structure adjustment by sliding up and down the screen, and change its value by sliding the screen horizontally. Once you’re happy with the adjustments, you can apply them using the arrow icon at the bottom right.

Step 3: tune image

“Tune image” is the most essential module in Snapseed since it allows you to do all the important color adjustments. There are five different adjustments in this module, and it can take a bit of playing around until you find the best combination for each image.

I started by increasing saturation, which makes all the colors in the image more vibrant, which is exactly what we want for a fall photo. However, I only increased saturation to +20 since I also have many other color adjustments in mind.

Next I adjusted white balance, which essentially changes how warm or cold the image is (a warm image is yellowish, a cold image is blueish). For this image we want yellowish rather than blueish tones, which I added to the image by increasing white balance to +20.

My next adjustment was contrast, which determines how different the highlights (the bright parts) are from the shadows (the dark parts). Most photos can be improved by increasing their contrast a little. However, you also don’t want to lose any detail in the shadows or highlights by making them completely black or completely white.

For this image I increased contrast to +20, which made it much more pleasing to the eye while at the same time not losing any important detail in the highlights or shadows.

Next I adjusted ambiance, which is one of the most powerful features of Snapseed. In a nutshell, ambiance brings out the mid tones of the photo and thus emphasizes details that would not stand out as much otherwise. Ambiance also makes colors more vibrant, but like with any Snapseed adjustment, you’ll run into issues if you do it too much.

In this case I increased ambiance to +25, which emphasizes detail in the trees, makes the photo more evenly exposed, and also makes the colors more vibrant.

Finally, I decreased brightness to -5 to make the image more compelling without making it too dark. In case you’re wondering how to pick the exact adjustment values, the answer is really simple. You just have to keep changing things until you find something you really like, even if it means jumping back an forth between different adjustments.

Step 4: selective adjust

Now, at this point we could already save the image to camera roll as what we have now is so much better than the photo we started with. The trees are now beautifully colorful, there is more contrast, and the image is just so much more pleasant to look at.

But there is one more thing I still want to do with this photo. If you look at the image, the first thing you’ll notice is the unusual orange rock on the other side of the river. Even though this rock already stands out a lot, we can make that rock even more unusual by making it’s orange tones even more orange without affecting the rest of the image.

To do this I opened “Selective adjust,” tapped the plus icon at the bottom, and added an adjustment point to the central part of the orange rock. As you move the adjustment point around, you’ll see a magnifying glass with an aim in the middle. Your goal is to aim exactly at the tones you want to adjust, so make sure that the tone encircling the magnifying glass is roughly the same as the tone that you want to apply adjustments on.

When you get the tone roughly right as I did in the screenshot above, you want to resize the adjustment area by pinching two fingers in and out. Everything that gets highlighted in red will get adjusted, while the rest of the image will remain unchanged.

I changed adjustment area so that only the left side of the rock is highlighted, and now I can change the brightness, contrast and saturation just for that part of the image. To make the orange rock even more orange, I increased the saturation of the rock to +40.

You can also use selective adjust to make the colors of individual trees brighter, to make the dark parts of the image lighter, to make silhouettes darker, and so on.

The final image

After applying changes made in selective adjust, I was really happy with the end result, and I saved the final version of the image to camera roll. Note that Snapseed will not save your work unless you save the final version of the image yourself.

Sharpen Your Videos With The Google Photos Video Unblur Tool

“Photo Unblur,” a new feature in Google Photos, uses machine learning to improve photos. It doesn’t matter if the images were recently captured with a Pixel camera or phone for this to work. While only available on the Pixel 7 series, there are rumours that Google is aiming to make the same unblur feature available for videos.

Although the tech has not yet been fully created, it is hoped that it will use machine learning to give previously recorded films a clearer look. “Video Unblur” is probably going to be a Pixel series-only feature that launches on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro later this year.

Effects of adding videos to Google Photos

Users will soon be able to add video effects to their films with a new feature coming to Google Photos. The app’s video editing function will have a “Overlays” option where you may access the effects.

The UI for the 14 anticipated effects has already been shown by 9to5Google, even if they are not yet active.
