Cadillac Escala Concept teases CT6’s super-luxe big brother

Cadillac has slipped the wraps off its latest concept car, the Escala, at Pebble Beach this evening, and it’s a beguiling vision of the brand’s next super-luxury sedan. Promising to wrap up both the future of Cadillac’s design and technological systems into one sinuous vehicle, the Escala may not reach dealer forecourts in quite this form, but it’s certainly a heavy-handed hint as to the American automaker’s upcoming assault on Mercedes-Benz’s S Class, BMW’s 7 Series, and Audi’s A8.

Cadillac teased the Escala earlier this week, focusing then on the design elements of the interior. The new concept car was to showcase an all-new dashboard complete with arrays of curved OLED screens co-developed with LG Display, Cadillac said, conveniently leaving most of the exterior’s wow-factor to surprise at the California car show.

The result is a vision of what Cadillac’s bigger brother to the CT6 sedan could look like. The Escala – its name the Spanish for “scale” – is described as “a larger, more elite and expressive companion” to the CT6, which currently stakes out a space somewhere around the E-Class and 5 Series.

A larger footprint is a given, therefore, though this is no normal three-box sedan. Instead, Cadillac has opted for a liftback design, visually stretching out the 210.5-inch long body while also throwing in a little more practicality.

Compared to current Cadillac fare, it’s arguably a smoother, less “shouty” aesthetic. Gone are some of the more dramatic, angular creases that have given recent cars from the company an almost Art Deco look, replaced with a new, cleaner grille and light design, three-dimensional grille mesh, and layered-spoke 22-inch wheels.

Cadillac used OLED lighting elements for the exterior lights, for what the company describes as “a sinister look, day and night.” It’s not just for the concept, either, with production cars expected to wear the new face soon enough.

Inside, meanwhile, Cadillac’s renewed focus on challenging German luxury shows itself once again. Up front it’s all about tech, with three curved OLED panels – wrapped, of course, in hand-stitched leather – while the interface previews the next generation of CUE, Cadillac’s love-it-or-hate-it infotainment platform.

It’s controlled by a dial in the center console, with touch-sensitivity, along with both voice and gestures. Still plenty of wood and leather, of course, but they’re joined by a new fabric finish on the wheel, doors, and lower dashboard.

In the back, meanwhile, comfort and relaxation are at the fore. Along with two big, comfortable seats there are slide-out displays built into the headrests, that cleverly collapse until they’re just a sliver of touchscreen to handle the essentials of HVAC control, multimedia, and other basics.

Under the hood there’s a 4.2-liter, twin-turbo V8 engine, which Cadillac says is the prototype of a whole new powertrain it plans to use in future production cars. It promises more fuel economy than the average V8 by deactivating half of the cylinders when under low load.

The platform underneath is the same rear-wheel-drive architecture that forms the basis of the CT6, with plenty of aluminum and other lightweight materials to ensure that, even with a 127.1-inch wheelbase, the Escala should still be relatively fleet footed.

Striking doesn’t seem to quite do the Escala justice, though keen followers of the luxury segment might spot a few familiar touches. There’s more than a hint of the Jaguar XJ in the rear three-quarter design, for instance, while the trunk is faintly reminiscent of the old Acura TL. Side-on, there’s a little of Audi’s A7 in the sweep of the roofline.

Nonetheless, there’s all the drama you’d hope for from Cadillac’s spin on “American Luxury” and it has us even more eager to see the CT6’s bigger brother.

“Depending on the development of market segment for large luxury sedans,” Johan de Nysschen, president of Global Cadillac, said of the concept, “Escala is a potential addition to our existing product plan.” Now we just have to see how Caddy fans react.

Nike Teases Separate 2023 Re

NIKE Teases Separate 2023 Re-Release of 2011 Back to the Future Shoe, Power Laces intact [Video]

If there’s one oddity that’s been taking the tech world by storm over these past 72 hours or so, it’s been the 2011 NIKE MAG shoe, straight out of the classic science fiction comedy film Back to the Future II. In this movie it’s Michael J. Fox in his most recognizable role of his career, Marty McFly, sporting the “NIKE MAG” sneakers in all their futuristic glory. We’ve got full details now on a 2011 release of the shoe, including the awesome fact that proceeds will be going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation in the end – but today a whole new bombshell may well have nearly slipped right under our noses: a “lost scene” from the Back to the Future movies that portends another release of this legendary sneaker set in the future: September 8th, 2023 to be exact, where they’ll include the most excellent “Power Laces” feature missing from the 2011 limited edition drop!

In this ad spot you’ll be glad to know that a whole slew of your best Back to the Future / NIKE / NBA personalities make their faces known including Christopher Lloyd (Dr. Emmett Brown in BTTF), basketball player Kevin Durant, Donald Fullilove (Mayor Goldie Wilson from BTTF) and NIKE design genius Tinker Hatfield behind the sales counter. Also the shoe salesman is Bill Hader (one of everyone’s favorite hero comedians currently starring on Saturday Night Live). It’s in this video that we expected to be seeing some extra awesome promotion of the 2011 NIKE MAG and not a whole heck of a lot else, but what we’ve gotten here is NIKE’s full understanding that no matter what they do to release the “greatest shoe never made”, if it isn’t exactly the same as it is in BTTF, it’s not perfect!

What we’re talking about here, of course, is Power Laces! Look at this video, will you? The entire essence of the NIKE MAG is in the power laces, McFly says so!

2023 NIKE MAG teaser — Full Cut!

The video here shows Durant at the NIKE shoe shop being helped by Hader who introduces the 2011 MAG, showing off the lights and the lightness of the sneakers (as opposed to “Heavy” as Durant says, this harkening back to Marty McFly’s famous catchphrase). The Doc blasts into the room, eyeballs ablaze with classic Christopher Lloyd character acting intensity, demanding to see the MAG sneakers — but wait, where are the power laces? Behind the sales counter, Fullilove and Hatfield stand – Hatfield letting the Doc know that he’s traveled back to the wrong future date – he’d have to go forward a bit to 2023 to get the Power Laces version of the NIKE MAG.

Of course the Doc needs those MAGs and he needs them to be equipped with Power Laces, so what do you know? He hops into that Flux Capacitor-equipped time machine capable DeLorean car of his and tears off into the future, but not before giving us a glimpse of the fact that he’s traveling exactly 4 years into the future to September 8th, 2011. Set the coordinates!

UPDATE: essentially CONFIRMED for a future Power Lace release in 2023, MTV’s interview with Back to the Future writer Bob Gale spells it out in nearly perfect plain English:

Gale: Nike wanted to do this in tiers. This is the beginning.MTV: So if this year’s shoes don’t have the auto laces, future years’ might?Gale: Yes! It’s not 2023 yet. It’s only 2011!MTV: I can’t wait that long! I can’t be patient.Gale: No one ever can.

Once again the facts on the 2011 NIKE MAG are as follows:

The original NIKE MAG was worn by the Back to the Future character Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, in the year 2023. It came alive, lit up and formed to Marty’s foot. The 2011 NIKE MAG shoe was designed to be a precise replica of the original from Back to the Future II. The aesthetic is an exact match, down to the contours of the upper, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent NIKE in the strap. The 2011 NIKE MAG illuminates with the pinch of the “ear” of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge.

Concept Of Cryptography In Blockchain

Introduction

Cryptography is a way of securing data against unauthorized access. In the blockchain, cryptography is used to secure transactions between two nodes in the blockchain network. As mentioned above, there are two main concepts in blockchain – cryptography and hashing. Cryptography encrypts messages in the P2P network while hashing helps secure block information and link blocks in the blockchain.

Cryptography primarily focuses on ensuring the safety of participants, transactions, and security against double-spending. It helps in securing various transactions in the blockchain network. It ensures that transactions can only be obtained, read, and processed by the individuals for whom the transaction data is intended.

Learning Objectives:

Understand the definition and role of cryptography in the blockchain.

Learn about the two types of cryptography.

Know all about the cryptographic hash function in blockchains.

This article was published as a part of the Data Science Blogathon.

The Role of Cryptography in Blockchain

Blockchain is developed with several different cryptography concepts. The development of cryptography technology supports the limitations of further blockchain development. In the blockchain, the main use of cryptography is to protect user privacy and transaction information and ensure data consistency. It plays a key role in maintaining the security of the public network, so it is suitable for maintaining the integrity and security of the blockchain.

What Is Cryptography in Blockchain?

Cryptography is a technique or protocol that secures information from any third party during communication. The word is composed of two Greek terms, the term Kryptos meaning “hidden,” and Graphein, meaning “to write”.

Some Terminology Related to Cryptography:

Encryption: Converting plaintext to a random sequence of bits.

Key: A certain amount of information needed to obtain the information of the cryptographic algorithm.

Decryption: The inverse process of encryption, converting a random sequence of bits into plain text.

Cipher: A mathematical function, i.e., a cryptographic algorithm, that converts plaintext into ciphertext (a random sequence of bits).

Features of Cryptography

The intended recipient and no one else can only access the information on a blockchain.

Information cannot be changed while being stored or sent between a sender and the intended recipient without the addition of new information being noticed.

The information creator/sender cannot later retract his desire to send information.

The sender’s and receiver’s identities are verified. Additionally, the information’s origin and destination are verified.

Applications of Cryptography

Here are some of the many applications of cryptography in blockchain:

Password Encryption: Cryptography is most commonly used in computer security, especially for creating and storing passwords. A user’s password is hashed and compared to the previously saved hash when they logged in. With this method, the passwords are encrypted, preventing unauthorized users from reading them even if they gain access to the password database.

Cryptocurrencies: Digital currencies like Bitcoin use encryption to secure transactions and thwart fraud. Intricate algorithms and cryptographic keys protect these transactions, making it nearly impossible to tamper with or counterfeit transactions.

Internet Security: Web browsing security is given using cryptography. It protects users from listening in on conversations and man-in-the-middle attacks. The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols use public key cryptography to encrypt data exchanged between the web server and the client, creating a secure communication channel.

Online Authentication: Another major use of cryptography is for authentication. This could be for logging into a computer, accessing a bank account, or using a secure network. Authentication protocols use cryptographic techniques to verify the user’s identity and that they have the necessary access privileges to the resource. The storage and verification of electronic signatures also work based on cryptography.

End-to-End Encrypted Conversations: Cryptography also helps in securing two-way communications such as video chats, instant messages, and email. Even with simple encryption, the message is guaranteed only to be viewed by the intended recipients. But, End-to-end encryption offers consumers a high level of protection and privacy and is frequently employed in messaging apps like WhatsApp and Signal.

Types of Cryptography

Basic cryptography technologies can include two types of encryptions:

Symmetric-key Cryptography

Asymmetric-key Cryptography

Symmetric Key Encryption

This type of cryptography focuses on a similar key for encryption and decryption. Most importantly, the symmetric key encryption method is also applicable for secure website connections or data encryption. Also referred to as secret key cryptography. The only problem is that the sender and receiver exchange keys securely. The Data Encryption System (DES) is a popular symmetric key cryptographic system. A cryptographic algorithm uses an encryption key to encrypt data, which must be made available. The person entrusted with the secret key can decrypt the data. Examples: AES, DES, etc.

Features of Symmetric-key Cryptography:

It is also described as secret key cryptography.

Both parties have the same key to keep the secret.

It is suitable for bulk encryption.

It requires less processing power and faster transfer.

This encryption method uses different keys for encryption and decryption. This encryption method uses public key and private key methods. This public key method helps completely unknown parties share information like email ID. The private key helps to decrypt the messages and also helps in verifying the digital signature. The mathematical relationship between the keys is that the private key cannot be derived from the public key, but the public key can be derived from the private key. Example: ECC, DSS, etc.

Features of Asymmetric-key Cryptography:

It is described as public key cryptography.

It is often used for symmetric cryptography secret key sharing.

It requires a long processing time to execute.

It plays a significant role in the authenticity of the web server.

Hash Cryptography Function in the Blockchain Properties of a Cryptographic Hash

For a particular message, the hash function does not change.

Any minor change in the data will result in a major change in the hash value.

The input value is not predicted from the output hash function.

They are fast and efficient because they rely heavily on bitwise operations.

Advantages of the Hash Function in the Blockchain

Reduce transaction bandwidth.

Prevent modifications in the data block.

Make it easy to verify your transaction.

Use of Cryptographic Hash Functions

Since the blockchain is also public for everyone, it is important to secure the data in the blockchain and protect the user’s data from malicious hands. So this can be easily achieved using cryptography.

When a transaction is verified using a hashing algorithm, it is added to the blockchain, and once the transaction is confirmed, it is added to the network forming the chain of blocks.

Cryptography uses mathematical codes, ensuring that the intended users of the data can retrieve it to read and process the transaction.

Over the years, many new tools have appeared related to the application of cryptography in the blockchain with different functions.

Advantages of Blockchain Cryptography

Encryption: Cryptography uses asymmetric encryption to ensure that transactions on their network protect information and communications from unauthorized disclosure and access to information.

Immutability: This cryptography function is important for blockchain and allows blocks to be securely connected to other blocks and to ensure the reliability of data stored in the blockchain. It also guarantees that no attacker can obtain a valid signature for unopposed queries and their related signatures from past queries.

Security: Cryptography facilitates transaction records by encrypting and accessing data using public and private keys. Data manipulation by cryptographic hashing is impossible, making the blockchain more secure.

Scalability: Cryptography makes the transaction irreversible and provides assurance that all users can rely on the accuracy of the digital ledger. Allows you to record unlimited transactions on the network securely.

Prevent hackers: Digital signature prevents hackers from changing the data because if the data is changed, the digital signature becomes invalid. It uses cryptography to protect data from hackers and makes cryptography unstoppable on the blockchain.

Limitations of Blockchain Cryptography

Below are some limitations of blockchain cryptography:

Difficult access to information: Heavily encrypted and digitally signed information can be difficult to access even for a legitimate user at the most critical decision-making time. The network can be attacked and disabled by an intruder.

High availability: It is one of the fundamental aspects of information security and cannot be ensured by cryptography. Other methods are needed to protect against threats such as denial of service or complete breakdown of information systems.

No protection against vulnerabilities: Cryptography does not protect against vulnerabilities and threats that result from poorly designed protocols, procedures, and systems. These problems need to be solved by proper design of defense infrastructure.

Expensive: Cryptography requires a huge investment of time and money. Public key encryption requires setting up and maintaining a public key infrastructure, which requires a huge investment. Adding cryptographic techniques to sending messages and processing information increases latency.

Vulnerability: The safety of cryptographic techniques relies on complication and difficulty of mathematical difficulty. Any improvement in resolving such mathematical problems can depart from vulnerable cryptographic techniques.

Conclusion

Cryptography is an essential part of the internal workings of blockchain technology. Public key encryption serves as the basis for blockchain wallets and transactions, cryptographic hashing functions provide an immutability feature, and Merkle trees organize transactions while allowing blockchains to be more efficient. The basic principles of cryptography perfectly correspond to the basic characteristics of blockchain technology. While digital signatures are trusted tools for encrypting blockchain network communication, cryptographic hash has better potential for cryptography.

Key Takeaways:

The most common use of cryptography is in the application and consensus layers of the blockchain.

The hashing algorithm mainly helps to create block identity, ensure the integrity of the blockchain, and act as a key component of consensus algorithms such as Bitcoin’s Proof of Work.

A digital signature discusses with the application layer to verify events by implanting them in transactions.

TCL Nxtpaper Phone Concept: What is it?

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

The standout feature of the TCL Nxtpaper Phone Concept is its display. TCL brought the Nxtpaper display from its line of tablets to the Nxtpaper Phone.

For those unfamiliar with Nxtpaper tablets, they are tablets with matte displays which give them a paper-like feel, similar to an Amazon Kindle. TCL’s first Nxtpaper tablet had no backlight, making it only truly useful in well-lit scenarios. The second generation had a backlight, giving it more usability. At CES this year, the company launched two Nxtpaper tablets: an Android model and a Windows-on-Arm model. These new tablets have brighter, crisper displays than previous generations.

A matte display? Why not?

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

During my hands-on time with the TCL Nxtpaper Phone Concept, I immediately fell in love with the matte display. It was soft to the touch and looked great under all lighting conditions.

Most of all, though, it was simply different. Think about it: When was the last time you used a phone that didn’t have a thick piece of shiny glass over the display?

The Nxtpaper display doesn’t catch fingerprints or smudges and doesn’t reflect ceiling lights.

The matte covering didn’t affect usage as far as I could tell. Tapping and swiping around the Android operating system was the same experience as with pretty much every other phone I’ve used in the past five years.

Unfortunately, using the phone wasn’t a flawless experience, so TCL would still need to iron out a few kinks.

There are a few hurdles TCL needs to overcome

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

The biggest problem TCL faces with the Nxtpaper Phone is brightness. Above, you can see how much brighter the Pixel 6 gets when compared to the Nxtpaper Phone. And remember that the Pixel 6 has a very low maximum brightness — the Pixel 7 gets almost 25% as bright. During everyday usage, this wouldn’t be much of an issue, but if you brought the Nxtpaper Phone out on a very sunny day, you would miss the crisp and clear OLED of something like the Pixel 6, to say nothing about the Pixel 7.

I would buy this, if…

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority

The TCL Nxtpaper Phone Concept is like someone combined a Kindle with a OnePlus One and then gave it the color scheme of the Google Pixel 5. This is a mash-up I never knew I needed until I had it in my hand.

Holding this concept phone actually got me excited, which is something that doesn’t happen often. It felt great in my hand, it had an innovative feature that made it truly unique when compared to other phones, and that feature actually made the phone better overall, instead of just being different for the sake of being different.

Is the TCL Nxtpaper Phone concept hot or not?

226 votes

If TCL could improve the Nxtpaper Phone’s brightness, give it some beefier durability, and lift its specs sheet out from the budget sector, I would buy this in a heartbeat. I feel like a lot of Android fans would feel the same way if they tried it out.

If nothing else, I hope TCL releases this commercially just to inject some creativity into the market. With LG gone, someone needs to take the big risks that Samsung and Apple are averse to.

2023 Cadillac Escalade Fuel Economy Ratings Reveal A Big Thirsty Boy

2023 Cadillac Escalade Fuel Economy Ratings Reveal A Big Thirsty Boy

Cadillac’s brand new 2023 Escalade won’t just be more lavish than its predecessor, but thirstier too, as the tech-packed luxury SUV’s official fuel economy numbers have now confirmed. Unveiled back in February, the all-new Escalade increases the cabin space and upgrades the gadgetry on offer by the now-iconic truck. As always, though, you’ll need deep pockets to consider it.

Final pricing for the 2023 Escalade is yet to be confirmed, though Cadillac told us back at the reveal that it expects the SUV to start at roughly the same price as the outgoing model. The 2023 Escalade currently begins at $75,195, but expect the new one to quickly spiral up as you add higher-end trims and newly-offered features like Super Cruise.

The standard engine for the 2023 version will be a new 6.2-liter V8 gas power plant. That has 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, and comes as standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Cadillac has thrown in variable valve timing, automatic stop/start, and Dynamic Fuel Management to try to coax as many miles per gallon out as possible, but even then there’s only so much you can do with something this size and weight.

The US EPA has just released the final fuel economy figures for the 2023 Escalade, in both 2WD and 4WD forms. The 2023 Escalade with 2WD is rated for 15 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined. To contrast, the 2023 version was rated for 14 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined.

As for the 2023 Escalade 4WD, that’s rated by the EPA at 14 mpg in the city, 19 mpg on the highway, and 16 mpg combined. Again, by contrast, the 2023 version came in at 14 mpg in the city, 21 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg combined.

Clearly, economy numbers are only part of the equation when it comes to the decision process behind a new vehicle purchase. They probably play even less of a role when it’s something like an Escalade: after all, the impact of a point or two difference in miles per gallon is a lot less important when you’re paying upward of $75k for the SUV in the first place. Factor in the current low gas prices, too, and you might be questioning why anyone will care.

Nonetheless, it leaves us even more curious about the second engine Cadillac will offer with the new Escalade. The 3.0-liter Duramax inline-6 turbodiesel will have less horsepower, at 277 hp, but the same 460 lb-ft of torque; the latter will also arrive much sooner than in the gas V8, from 1,500 rpm rather than 4,100 rpm. It’ll also use the same, 10-speed automatic transmission as its gasoline counterpart.

Cadillac hasn’t said what sort of economy numbers we might expect for the diesel Escalade, and the EPA is yet to publish its figures. Nor do we know what sort of price premium it might carry on the car.

Beyond that, the EPA’s results do highlight a glaring absence in Cadillac’s range: an electrified Escalade. Right now there’s no hybrid model, never mind a fully-electric version of the truck, and the automaker isn’t even making use of mild-hybrid technology as it does with a China-specific version of the XT5. The automaker’s range as a whole is looking sparse when it comes to EV tech right now, indeed.

That’s set to change with the debut of the Cadillac Lyriq, of course. The first of GM’s family to use the new Ultium battery-electric architecture, the luxury crossover will be entirely powered by electricity, the automaker has confirmed. Originally, the reveal of the new Lyriq had been intended to take place in early April, a timeline that was derailed by the coronavirus pandemic. Still, GM insists that the Lyriq itself is still on track.

Audi’S Genius Auto Show Wifi Teases A4 Tech And Snarks Rivals

Audi’s genius Auto Show WiFi teases A4 tech and snarks rivals

In this day and age of the internet, mobile devices, and social media powered news, you’d wouldn’t think getting online at the world’s biggest conventions would be a problem. And yet such conventions, even tech-focused ones, are notorious for having near dismal networks. Car shows are, sadly, no exception either. Audi, however, has come up with a clever way to change all that at the 2023 New York Auto Show, and showcase the 2023 Audi A4 and its intelligent connectivity in the process. What better way to get the message across, goes the thinking, than with free, high-speed Wi-Fi.

It is, of course, a marketing campaign, but one that is well thought-out and creative. Not to mention potentially extremely useful and for something in-demand: after all, who can resist the lure of free internet, particularly at an event you’re trying to get the word out about the hottest cars and technologies at break-neck speed.

The genius of the campaign, however, isn’t just in the service but in the very name of the networks themselves. Audi has customized each network’s SSID to highlight a particular aspect of the A4’s systems. One, is named after the car’s Lane Assistance feature, for instance, while another is after its overhead camera. In suitably Inception-style self-reference, there’s even a Wi-Fi network that notes the A4’s own 4G LTE Wi-Fi capabilities.

Audi says it’s confident it can handle 2,000 simultaneous connections without bringing the house down, something likely to be put to the test both during the press days mid-week and then when the popular public days open up after that. To keep the names and features fresh, Audi will be rotating the SSIDs during the New York Auto Show week, with at least 10 networks available at any time.

A4 Wi-fi. 328 No-Fi

A4 BrakeAssist. 328 No

A4 CarPlay. 328 No

A4 12.3″ Screen. 328 0″

A4 TurnAssist. C300 No.

A4 OverheadCamera. C300 No

A4 RearCam. C300 No

If you really wanted you could even go on a Pokémon-style hunt to catch them all, or just try to figure out which SSIDs are calling out which of Audi’s rivals (some are easier than others, with BMW’s 328i getting name-checked for horsepower and torque).

We spent some up-close time with the European version of the A4 last year, shortly after the Frankfurt Auto Show, and came away impressed by not only the design and on-road performance, but the sort of technology Audi has been integrating into the compact executive segment. The company’s Virtual Cockpit is front and center, for instance, with high-resolution graphics and digital gages that were previously the preserve of sports cars like the R8 and TT, while behind the scenes there are an assortment of sensors and driver assistance features including adaptive cruise control and Apple’s CarPlay.

Figuring out a way not only to promote those features, but make New York Auto Show attendees actively go looking for them (or, at least, the free WiFi that they represent) is a clever way of standing out among the best of the auto industry.
