Suggested March 2024 Can Google Pagerank Be Manipulated For Better Rankings?

I saw a discussion on Facebook about manipulating website linking patterns to focus PageRank to important pages. The idea was that linking to “useless” pages is a waste of PageRank and a diminution of a website’s ranking power.

SEO 101 – Site Architecture

One of the most fundamental understandings about how to create a website is creating a meaningful site architecture. That means creating a menu and site structure that makes it easy for a site visitor to reach all the important pages of a website.

That’s newbie level SEO but it’s a goodie.

PageRank Sculpting

The strategy of stopping PageRank from flowing to “useless pages” is called PageRank Sculpting.

My understanding about PageRank sculpting is that this is something people were talking about in the SEO forums in the mid-2000’s and later popularized on the Moz website to the wider world.

In 2009 Google engineer Matt Cutts said that Google uses nofollowed links as part of the calculation of how much PageRank to send to other pages.

So if a page has ten links and one is nofollowed, the flow of PageRank to the nine normal links is as if there are ten links on the page, regardless if one of those links is nofollowed.

what that means is that there is no benefit to PageRank sculpting by using the nofollow link for that practice.

Related: Google PageRank, Simplified: A Guide for SEO Beginners

Cloaking Links Method

Another method to achieve the PageRank sculpting goal is to hide the links from Google. That means showing one page to Google and another page to users.

Under that definition then cloaking for PR sculpting isn’t spam.

But… My opinion is I would hesitate to roll the dice on the rankings of a well ranking site by splitting hairs about what a Googler said

Nobody can really say at what point they crossed the line until the line was crossed and the site is banned for crossing over it.

And of course there is always that one person who will pop up to say they did the same thing and got away with it.

I get it that it’s good to squeeze maximum performance from a site. But good site architecture, SEO 101, will get your players down the field and within scoring distance to the goal.

From there it’s up to your web pages to score the goal.

It’s not the job of the goalkeeper or the home page to score the goal.

It’s good to link to about us pages. It’s good to link to contact us page (if you have one).

It doesn’t matter if PageRank flows to those pages because it’s up to the individual web pages to rank. It’s not the responsibility of the home page to trickle down PageRank to make inner pages rank.

We used to be able to SEE how much PageRank flows from page to page with Google’s toolbar, so maybe it’s easier for someone like myself to visualize or conceptualize it? It basically just starts at the home page then steps down one point from link to link through the site (on the general scale shown to us by Google).

Except for inner pages that attain links.

The inner pages that attain links have higher PageRank than other pages.

But the idea of the home page being the mother of the all the web pages beneath it, with all the sub-pages sucking on it’s PageRank teat for PageRank nourishment is outdated.

Every web page that matters should attract links from outside the site and stand on its own two feet like a grown up who leaves their parents home and feeds themselves.

Every page that matters will feed itself and stand on its own.

The idea that every page is dependent on the home page for links is outdated.

It comes from the idea that links should point to the home page and trickle down to the inner pages. That doesn’t work anymore.

Worrying about how much PageRank flows to your contact page is like ripping out the back seats of your car in order to make it lighter and save five cents a mile on gas.

The whole idea about manipulating PageRank was settled eleven years ago in 2009.

What should sink in, what’s most important, is that Web pages that tend to attract links are the web pages that rank.

Worrying about how PageRank is flowing is a waste of time that could be better spend creating or promoting web pages.

Matt Cutts put a fork in the idea of manipulating  PageRank in 2009. Nobody should be jumping up and down about the idea as if it’s something new in 2023.

Does The Cms Matter For Search Rankings?

This question is addressed in the latest installment of the Ask Googlebot series on YouTube.

However, Mueller confirms there’s no difference from one CMS to another when it comes to ranking signals. Read his complete response below.

A CMS Is Not A Ranking Factor

Google isn’t concerned with what’s going on in the back end of a website. What matters is the final result shown to visitors.

You can send the same signals to Google using WordPress, Wix, or no CMS at all. Mueller states:

“As far as I know, our search systems don’t look for any particular content management system to treat it differently. For us, a CMS is just one way of creating webpages. Google systems don’t focus on how the page was created. Instead, they focus on the final result. Hand-created webpages can be just as good as those generated by WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, or similar.”

Mueller continues his response, saying you can create pages that work well in search using any of the major content management systems.

It’s not as though SEO is a proprietary formula that only one CMS developer has access to.

SEO isn’t a highly guarded secret either. As Mueller says, what works in search is well documented.

If you understand SEO fundamentals, you can achieve good results regardless of your choice of CMS.

Mueller continues:

“As far as I can tell, all mainstream CMS systems can create pages that work well in search. For the most part, SEO is not magic. It’s well documented, and there are many testing tools so all providers can include SEO elements if they choose to do so. There are slight differences across systems, just like all webpages are slightly different. For the average site owner, they either all work well for search out of the box, or can easily be tuned to do so with a few settings or plugins.”

Microsoft 365 Vs Google Workplace: Which One Is Better For You?

How does Microsoft 365 compare with Google Workplace? Which one is better, one of the hottest questions in the world has an answer. And in this article, we are going to find that. They both have dozens of similarities but there are enough differences that can appeal to a certain audience.

Microsoft 365 vs Google Workplace

Both Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365) and Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) are some of the best productivity software in the market and you can not go wrong with either of them. Both of them have essential software such as Cloud Storage, Document Creation, etc that can help you in efficiently managing your professional life.

Some of the similarities between Microsoft 365 and Google Workplace are:

Video Conferencing

Calendar Management

Document, SpreadSheet, and Presentation

File Management

Teams

Cloud Service

Even though they both do the same thing but the experience may vary depending as they both have some similarities as well as some different tools.

Fun Fact: another similarity between the two is that they both underwent a name change, Microsoft 365 was earlier called Office 365, however, Google Workplace was called G Suite.

We are going to compare these two on the following grounds:

Document Creation: Word vs Docs

SpreadSheet: Excel vs Sheets

Presentation: PowerPoint vs Slides

Business Email: Outlook vs Gmail

Cloud Storage: OneDrive vs Google Drive

Pricing

Let us discuss them in detail.

Document Creation: Word vs Docs

On the other hand, Google Docs is a younger and lighter alternative to MS Words. It has new features such as collaboration that allow multiple people to work on a document. They have most of the features similar to MS Word and can be a good alternative for light users.

That being said, MS Word is clearly the more powerful software, it has more tools and features that a professional can find useful. However, you have to decide whether you give more value to productivity or collaboration because if MS Word is focused on the prior, Docs is better for collaboration.

SpreadSheet: Excel vs Sheets

An app to manage records and do some mathematical calculations is a must-have for almost all types of businesses, therefore, both Microsoft 365 and Google Workplace offers their version of SpreadSheet apps, Excel and Sheet respectively.

Google on the other hand has built a simple solution that just works. They do not have any tools like Excel but most users do not use them. However, we need to admit that Google is catching up, they are closing in, but they need to improve quite a lot to compete with MS Excel.

That being said, we can not choose a clear winner here. Google Sheet lacks some essential features but at the same time, they are better suited for collaboration which can be important for some people. MS Excel does all the thing Sheet excluding collaboration on top of some Excel exclusive features.

Slideshow Presentation: PowerPoint vs Slides

One can not climb the corporate ladder without good SlideShow Presentation software, lucky for you, both Google and Microsoft have created their own versions, Slides and PowerPoint respectively, and they both are great.

Just like Word and Excel, Microsoft’s PowerPoint has been ruling the market for ages. They started as an excellent software to create SlideShow Presentation and have kept on growing. They have animations, transitions, and dozens of different tools to make you and your content stand out from the crowd.

On the other hand, Google’s Slides is a decent software to create Slideshow Presentation. They probably have the best collaboration tool in the market but they can’t compete with MS PowerPoint when it comes to variety. It’s not like they don’t have adequate tools, it’s just the fact Microsoft is so far ahead of the competition that they both are somewhat incomparable.

So, we can say that MS PowerPoint is a clear winner in the battle. That being said, you won’t go wrong by choosing Slides to create a simple SlideShow Presentation.

Business Email: Outlook vs Gmail

It may seem like Microsoft is going to sweep all the land in this war between Microsoft 365 and Google Workplace. But this is the section where Google Workplace is starting to regain some ground.

Outlook is good and probably one of the most famous mailing services in the market. They have 50GB of storage capacity (without the inclusion of attachment). With a maximum file size of 150 MB and a recipient count of 500 Outlook is a decent option for a business email.

That being said, Gmail probably is the superior of the two. They have billions of active users all around the world. One can send a mail to 500 people at a time, however, the maximum file size is just 25 MB but one can send bigger files as a Google Drive attachment.

MS Outlook is a decent option for Business Email but Gmail is the better of the two.

Cloud Storage: OneDrive vs Google Drive

Cloud Storage is very important in this world of the Internet. It has replaced most of the physical storage devices such as Pendrive, DVD, HDD, etc. Therefore, choosing a Cloud Storage service is very important.

Microsoft OneDrive is one of the best cloud storage services in the market. They give 1TB for personal cloud storage. However, the capacity can be increased by opting for a five-user Enterprise account.

Google Drive is one of the most popular cloud storage services because of the popularity of Android Smartphones and Tablets. They offer 30 GB to Basic accounts and unlimited storage to Business and Enterprise subscription plans (they should have at least 5 users).

One can not go wrong with either of the two. To pick the best one you need to check the pricing. While discussing Cloud Storage we must consider the fact that most Android phones use Google Drive except for Samsung as they are one of the very few phone manufacturers using OneDrive as their backup system.

Pricing

Pricing is an important factor that can shape your decision. However, it is not as simple as the other factors discussed in this article.

Google Workplace Pricing

Google has tried to simplify its subscription services for you without compromising on options. They have four plans:

Business Starter: At $6 per user per month you will get a custom email, video meeting service with a maximum of 100 participants, 30 GB cloud storage per user, and many more.

Business Standard: At $12 per user per month you will get a custom email, video meeting with a maximum of 150 participants with the option to record the meeting, 1 TB cloud storage per user, and many more.

Business Plus: At $18 per user per month you will get a custom email, eDiscovery, 250 participants video conferencing with recording and attendance tracking, 5 TB cloud storage, and many more.

Enterprise – Custom pricing and tools.

All the Google Workplace plans come with different services that may appeal to different audiences.

Microsoft 365 Pricing

Microsoft has a very complex pricing structure that may confuse you a bit, but the upside is that you get a lot more options to choose from. Let’s simplify it a bit:

Microsoft 365 Business Basic: At $5 per month you will get a business email, OneDrive cloud storage, Teams, web and mobile version of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

Microsoft 365 Apps: At $8.25 a month you will get 1 TB of OneDrive cloud service, Offline version of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Access, and many more.

Microsoft 365 Business Standard: At $12.50 a month you will get an Offline version of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Access, and web services such as OneDrive cloud storage, Team, SharePoint, Exchange, and many more.

Microsoft 365 Business Premium: At $20 a month it has all the features that its cheaper version has such as Offline version of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Access, and web services such as OneDrive cloud storage, Team, SharePoint, Exchange plus some exclusive tools such as Intune and Azure Information Protection.

Microsoft 365 E1: At $10 a month we have a basic solution for Enterprises. With this pack, you will get 1 TB of OneDrive Cloud Storage and all web and mobile apps of Microsoft 365.

Microsoft 365 E3: At $ 20 a month you will get desktop applications of Microsoft 365, a maximum mailbox size of 100 GB per user, and many other things.

Microsoft 365 F5: At $35 a month you will get all the features of E3 plus enhanced security and video capability.

One thing to note while talking about the Microsoft 365 plans and Microsoft365 Enterprise plans is that they only offer annual subscriptions.

Conclusion

Choosing a clear winner in this battle, Microsoft 365 vs Google Workplace, is not possible. But after looking at their services we have boiled everything down to just one statement. Google Workplace might be better for collaboration whereas Microsoft 365 is better at the rest.

5 Best Dark Mode Google Chrome Extensions For Better Reading Experience

Using extensions, you can quickly change the website background to dark in Google Chrome. Doing so will increase the contrast between text and the background and eliminate the blue light to prevent eye strain. Below we’ve mentioned some of the best dark mode extensions with pros and cons.

With over 4 million users, Dark Reader is one of the most popular Google Chrome extensions for reading in the dark. It comes in with many added features apart from just enabling dark mode on websites. Here’s how to install the extension.

Step 4: Once you enable dark mode, here’s how websites on Google Chrome will appear.

In our experience, this extension provides the most refined and clean dark mode.

There are many options to control the color filter in dark mode (brightness, contrast, etc.)

This extension is ad-free and does not claim to collect any data.

You can block/enable dark mode for specific websites.

The extension also comes with a dynamic mode for more accurate colors in the dark mode.

Cons :

This extension does not enable dark mode on PDF files viewed in Chrome.

Dynamic Mode, at times, seems to slow down websites.

Sometimes images tend to be broken on a few websites due to the dark mode forced by this extension.

This extension has problems enabling dark mode on a few drop-down and pop-up menus.

The Lunar Reader extension is another extension that we liked and does an excellent job among all the dark mode Google Chrome extensions for a better reading experience. Here’s a step-by-step procedure to install the extension.

Step 2: The extension will automatically activate and convert websites into dark mode. Here’s how websites will appear once this extension enables dark mode.

Like the previous extension, you get a few options to manage the color filters of the dark mode. You also get an additional feature of managing the color temperature.

You get an option to blacklist/whitelist websites from being converted into dark mode.

One feature we liked was being able to schedule dark mode.

Another unique feature of this extension is that you get a few keyboard shortcuts to toggle the features of this extension quickly.

Cons :

This extension has a few issues with darkening headings and links.

Some sites are inverted partially, and the rest of it remains light.

It sometimes ends up inverting everything, even including images – which are supposed to remain in their true color schemes irrespective of what mode is being used.

In our experience, although it does a decent job, but is far from the previous (Dark Reader) extension.

If you prefer using a simple, lightweight extension – you can use the Super Dark Mode extension. We observed a slightly better performance, and this extension does not skimp on any features and makes it one of the better dark mode Google Chrome extensions for a better reading experience.

Step 2: The extension is automatically activated. You can tap the extension icon in the menu to disable it when required.

Step 6: A new tab will now open up, showing you all the features and options provided by this extension.

Pros :

This extension enables dark mode even on a few PDFs, and other local files once opened on Google Chrome.

This extension is quite light and stable to use.

To offer a refined dark mode experience, this extension comes with three different modes – Classic, Invert, and Modern. The smart invert mode ensures that dark mode is not applied on websites that already have dark mode enabled.

This extension does not skip standard features like scheduling dark mode or whitelisting/blacklisting websites.

This extension does not seem to work well with Google Docs.

Text in pop-up menus and a few websites are too pale at times.

Sometimes, the extension has trouble detecting black text, and as it makes the background around the black text dark, it fails to lighten the text.

We also faced a few white flashes as we scrolled down websites converted to dark mode using this extension.

Another extension that gets the job done for enabling dark mode on all websites is the Dark Mode for Chrome extension. Here’s a step-by-step procedure to install the extension.

Step 3: This is how websites appear in dark mode once the extension is enabled.

Pros :

This extension is quite simple to use and lightweight too.

You can also customize the different colors that appear in the dark mode – using Theme Changer in options.

When it comes to excluding sites from dark mode – you can exclude websites or just individual pages on websites. This is quite a unique feature.

Cons :

We are not entirely impressed with how websites appear in the dark mode. The refinement is quite low, and we do not like how a few elements have grey boxes around them.

It does not have any scheduling options for dark mode.

Multiple complaints from many users regarding the whitelist feature not working properly.

Unlike all the other dark mode Chrome extensions, the Night Shift Redux extension comes with a night shift mode – which adds tints and filters to web pages to help further reduce eye strain and makes reading much more comfortable. Here’s how to install the extension.

Step 3: This is how websites appear in dark mode with an added filter. You can configure the colors and the opacity of the filter with the settings provided in the main menu.

We love the Night Shift feature on this extension, and it does make reading comfortable in darker environments.

You can also control the opacity of the extension using the slider provided in the main menu.

You can customize the color of the night shift tint in the main menu.

It also comes with options to schedule the dark mode.

Cons :

There is a minor glitch on this extension, where users complain of being redirected to the Bing search engine as the default homepage.

This does a mediocre job when it comes to converting all elements into dark mode on websites, and at times a few sections of the webpage might look weird.

Texts also get greyed out on certain websites. Users also complain of the extensions greying out and camouflaging text on Facebook Messenger.

These are some of the best dark mode Google Chrome extensions for a better reading experience at night and low-light. Do try them, and we hope our detailed pros and cons help you make the right choice. Stay tuned for more such guides on using unique extensions on Google Chrome to enhance your browsing experience.

Tesla Car Can Be Summoned And Park Itself

Tesla Motors continue to add self-driving capabilities to its Model S electric car at a breathtaking pace, and the company announced yet more this past Sunday.

This latest software upgrade, Version 7.1, has been eagerly awaited by Model S owners whose carswere built since August 2014.

The new software is now in the early phases of its rollout, and as of writing, your author’s 2024 Tesla Model S P85D has not yet been updated.

It is also said to have better lane-keeping when passing highway exits. On an early road trip from Sacramento to Chico, my P85D scared the daylights out of my passenger (a fellow Model S owner) when it swerved sharply at a rural exit that we did not want to take.

2024 Tesla Model S P85D, May 2024

Fortunately, I knew this was a potential outcome, and had my hands on the wheel as instructed to correct for this “mistake.”

Version 7.1 is also expected to provide better lane-keeping even when lane markings are faded.

Around my Sacramento home, several sections of Interstate-5 are so horribly worn that when driving with the auto-steer function activated, the system frequently beeps me to take over because it cannot follow the poor lane markings.

2024 Tesla Model S P85D, May 2024

With its intelligent cruise control, the car could fully handle driving in the stop-and-go traffic of commute time.

Version 7.1 can now also independently park the car in a tight garage (meaning one too narrow for a driver to open the door when inside). In this setting, the car can also back itself out of the garage.

This is what Tesla calls “summoning,” and represents the first step toward KITT—the intelligent self-driving car of 1980s television.

The Model S can even open the garage door as it approaches, and close it when finally in place, by transmitting the commands to an electronic door opener.

It can also automatically perpendicular park, via backing into such a space. And in the driver’s display, the panel now will show exactly what vehicles are around the front of the Model S: car, truck, or motorcycle.

2024 Tesla Model S P85D, May 2024

Needless to say, Tesla owners are eagerly updating and testing out the new functions. As YouTube user “GasKicker” relates in a Tesla Motors Club forum:

Version 7.1 also incorporates a more minor range of improvements, including a function that unlocks only the driver’s door when a person approaches with the key fob. This actually represents a huge positive and overdue feature for any Model S driver who has been at risk when approaching the car in settings that are less than safe and secure.

The trip-planner software has been improved to avoid the silly possibility of backtracking to the nearest Supercharger (I lost three hours late one night following the “backtracking” instructions from Version 7.0, when I should have known better).

However, while the newest software indicates Supercharger sites that are not “in service” and so should be avoided, it doesn’t yet show whether there are—or will be—open stalls at a Supercharger location, a feature requested by most owners.

During his conference call, Musk said these latest changes are still “baby steps” toward full autonomous cars, which he expects “technically could be here in 24-36 months.”

In coming months, he claimed, with the current technology plus its “fleet learning,” the 7.1 software will be “better than humans in highway driving.”

The car now actually looks ahead, for example, and will reduce speed when it approaches a sharp turn in the road.

For full autonomous driving, a Tesla will need more sensors than in the current production vehicles include—but with improved hardware and the development of national standards for autonomous driving, Musk expects that “we will see this happen….soon.”

Despite the shocking risks taken by some early drivers using the auto-steering found in Version 7.0 (many documented on video), Musk said he is “not aware of any accidents with the Model S under auto-steering control.”

The future is coming, and it is coming “soon” at a Tesla pace.

Can My Vr Game Be A Good Workout?

What about playing video games to get fit? Experts say this is true and that virtual reality (VR) technology is bringing about a whole new way of working out.

We all know that exercise is good for our health and can help us look and feel our best, but it’s easy to put off going to the gym to lift weights or putting on your running shoes. Virtual reality (VR) fitness could be the answer for people who have never been active or played sports as kids but have yet to find a fitness program that works and is fun.

If you’ve ever had trouble getting yourself to go for a run or hop on an indoor bike, here are the best virtual reality (VR) fitness apps to help you work out virtually and have fun while doing it.

What Is VR Fitness?

In video games, the person playing uses a portable controller to tell their in-game avatar what to do. In virtual reality fitness, the actions of your virtual persona depend on how your body moves. For a few seconds or minutes, you might be on your feet, jumping over laser beams, squatting and lunging to the side while riding a virtual reality roller coaster, or swinging your arms wildly while fighting a monster with a sword.

Who Would Virtual Reality Exercise Help the Most? Is There Anyone WhoShouldn’t DoIt?

VR workouts might be fun for people who like more interactive or virtual workouts. Virtual reality games and programs can be a great way to get people who don’t usually exercise to start, especially if they find it more fun than going to the gym.

Even people who hate being active might burn calories while playing this game.

Remember, though, how fit and mobile you are right now. Before you start an exercise routine, talk to your doctor if you have a condition or injury that might make it hard for you to exercise safely. In the same way, if you don’t do much physical activity, it’s probably best to start any game you want to play on the “easy” setting.

Top 4 VR Games for Workout 1. Liteboxer VR

Liteboxer VR is unique because it is the first virtual reality (VR) fitness platform that lets you train with real coaches. Liteboxer’s nine world-class trainers are more inspiring, informative, and helpful than working alone or with other virtual reality fitness apps that use avatars or fake instructors.

Your exercise score is a combination of correct hits, streaks, and force, and you can see your progress in different ways over seven days or thirty days.

Liteboxer VR Fitness can be used for free, or you can pay for it. The paid version has more than 300 trainer-led classes and the top 40 songs from the app’s library, but the free version only has 35.

2. FitXR App

The best virtual reality (VR) fitness game is the FitXR app. This inspiring training software for VR combines the realism of VR with challenging exercises for the whole body that experts in the field made. The app has workouts for high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and other types of exercise, like boxing and dance, so that users can put together a complete fitness plan.

FitXR’s fitness courses are so fun that they’re like going to a party while you work out. There are hundreds of courses to choose from, and new ones are added every week. Boxing and HIIT exercises are some of the best. You can make your Workout fit your needs by choosing from different virtual studio settings. Some high-intensity interval training sessions, for example, take place in a beautiful studio on a clifftop, adding to the aesthetic pleasure of punching, dodging, and smashing your way through a series of full-body exercises.

3. Supernatural App

Supernatural is the best virtual reality (VR) fitness software you can get. This app is your best bet after FitXR if you want well-designed VR workouts that are also very effective. There are more than 500 different workouts to choose from, and you can do them in many realistic virtual places worldwide. There are many challenges to choose from, and virtual coaches can help you get the most out of your workouts. Users can choose from several challenging exercises and connect with other fitness fans through different social media sites.

Music and movement are used in supernatural exercises. You can choose a VR boxing workout, a VR yoga session, a VR meditation session, or a VR stretching session in Supernatural. Flow is a less gentle choice, but boxing is more extreme.

Flow courses, unique to Supernatural, involve complicated rhythmic movements. As you lunge, swing, and swipe to the music, your heart rate will go up and burn calories.

4. The OhShape App

OhShape is not a virtual reality fitness app, but it will keep your blood pumping and your body moving. The game is based on the Japanese TV show Hole in the Wall, and players must punch, dodge, and weave through holes in the Wall as the music gets faster and faster. More points are given for moving faster and more accurately.

Conclusion

If you’ve been keeping up with virtual reality, you know that Oculus has been promising for the past decade that it’s on the cusp of bringing VR to the masses. So, what’s different today? To put it simply, this is the issue of access.
