Neurodivergence is underrecognized in childhood. Teachers can use these strategies for a universal approach that supports all learners.

Neurodivergent individuals—those who are autistic, have ADHD, or experience other variances in brain functioning—make up 15 to 20 percent of the population. Yet many neurodivergent people aren’t formally diagnosed; for example, one study found sex discrepancies in which boys were diagnosed with ADHD at a 3:1 ratio during childhood, even though that diagnostic ratio evens out to 1:1 in adulthood.  

Neurodivergence can lend many strengths, so students may present as high achievers in the classroom and thereby remain undiagnosed due to high performance. But when students lack formal diagnoses, they may struggle later in life, experiencing poor self-esteem, depression, anxiety, sleep issues, eating disorders, trouble maintaining a job, or other challenges that earlier interventions could mitigate. 

While it is important for teachers to collaborate with special education professionals and others trained in scaffolding the well-being and learning of all students, we may not always know who in our classroom lacks a formal diagnosis.

For that reason, and to better reach all learners, we can employ a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework that centers choice, balance, and self-esteem to establish baseline practices inclusive of neurodivergence.

Offer Alternatives and Choices

To create learning environments supportive of a breadth of neurotypes, give students alternatives and choices throughout classroom activities. Consider how you might be flexible about how students complete assignments. For example, I encourage my students to have a conversation with me if they can think of a way to complete an assignment that would work better for them; as long as the rigor and content are intact, I am happy to accommodate alternative ideas. 

As a student who was a then-undiagnosed neurodivergent, I remember a time in high school when we had an assignment to create a foldable to help us study for a math test. I made mine with flaps that would open to reveal definitions, but my teacher expected definitions to be written on the same page as the flap. I lost points. When I explained that my approach would benefit my learning, my teacher told me that I was welcome to remake the foldable her way, a “better” way, to get a 100—I was only one of two students across her three classes who had made it a different way, she said. 

Stubbornly, I told her no. This experience has stayed with me throughout my teaching career. 

My students may interpret things differently than I do, and as long as students demonstrate understanding of curricular concepts, I want to respect those differences. 

In my classroom, there is a map that my graphic design students are making for a major project. I told them to make a map of a real place, like a continent or state. A handful of students approached me to ask if they could map locations from video games or shows they enjoy. Though fictional, these places still have landmarks and creatures that students can create as icons, so I am happy to oblige. This is one example of how choice and adaptation can facilitate deeper, more inclusive learning.

Some neurodivergent students might struggle with taking the initiative to reach out and ask for accommodations, so I try to automatically offer choice in my assignments whenever possible. Students benefit from having options; however, it is also important to limit options to avoid overwhelm. I usually offer students two to four options for showing me what they know. 

In the map project, I give them an option between an artistically styled map and a fantasy-styled map. 

In my computer programming classes, students can choose from a set of exercises to earn a certain amount of points. For example, if they need three points, they may have a set of three single-point options, two two-point options, and two three-point options to choose from, with levels of complexity appropriate for the number of points the exercise is worth. 

By embedding choice within assignment structures and considering alternative approaches that students suggest, we can create classrooms in which students can both think differently and thrive. 

Help Students Avoid Burnout

Neurodivergent individuals are prone to burnout. There are many thoughts as to why, but the basic idea is that it takes extra energy to adapt to a world centered around neurotypical individuals, so sensory stress, attempts at “masking” (or working to present as neurotypical), and overcompensating for differences can cause exhaustion. 

There are protective factors that can help neurodivergent students avoid or minimize burnout—for example, encouraging students to be themselves and explore what works for them. I model this by discussing what works best for me and talking through alternative ways to approach situations. As a class, we talk about the different ways we listen best, considering what each part of our body does while listening. 

I talk about how, when I am listening and absorbing what I hear, my hands are typically busy, and my eyes are looking somewhere else. I talk with students about how some people benefit from staying still. I encourage them to self-reflect, and we have similar conversations about studying, taking notes, and completing assignments, acknowledging that everyone learns differently and there is no “right” way to approach learning.

Promote Balance

Balance is another important topic to discuss with students, especially in relation to burnout. Some neurodivergent students might overcompensate by being overinvolved, taking on large amounts of extracurricular activities or demonstrating perfectionism in their work. Others may find it difficult to focus or participate and may end up doing very little in class. 

If we encourage students to consider work-life balance from a young age, we can help them prioritize their mental health. We can ask students to consider what they do to relax or enjoy themselves outside of school. Our students may be running low on energy halfway through the day due to bright lights, excessive sounds, or other factors, and we can encourage them to replenish by turning to self-identified strategies.

Language also plays a role in promoting or preventing burnout. Neurodivergent students can struggle with executive function—cognitive skills involved in starting and sustaining tasks.  

For example, I often tell myself to “just start” a task as I sit in a state of paralysis due to executive dysfunction. 

Discussing potential can be particularly problematic in such instances, breaking down self-esteem and compounding stress. Students know when they aren’t meeting expectations. Instead, encourage them to take a break, walk around the room, or get a drink of water. If the student is out of energy for the day, approach them with empathy and help make a plan for catching up the following day.

Support Students’ Sense of Self

Self-reflection is a critical learning tool for all students. In my courses, I make a list of key skills related to metacognition, goal setting, and planning, and I invite students to visit this list multiple times a quarter to identify skills they feel confident about and others they would like to work on. 

I keep this in mind when interacting with my students and remember to compliment and encourage strengths even when offering constructive feedback. Neurodivergent students may hyperfocus on their interests, and these special interests may improve their self-esteem and self-efficacy. Encouraging students to talk about their interests can help them build confidence rather than feel stigmatized for having these more intense interests, and it can position students to learn from one another’s expertise.

Not a Strategy, A Mindset

Overall, meeting the needs of neurodivergent students can require a shift in thinking. Whether or not we see it, our students may be struggling. Offering alternatives and choices for assignments, helping students avoid burnout, and working on students’ sense of self are some ways we can meet the needs of all students, including those who may be neurodivergent but lack a formal diagnosis.

These skills and experiences can help our students learn in ways that work for them while helping them better understand themselves, skills that transfer far beyond the classroom and support students’ well-being into adulthood.

Starting with the basics, you need to scope out what you’re looking to use social listening for. Start by defining how you intend to use it to add value to your business. How will you explain it to colleagues. This is how we see it:

“Social listening is a a market research process in which relevant content and conversations, defined by keywords are identified from social media sites such as blogs, social networks, forums & blogs and then placed into context to provide insight to inform customer engagement, collaboration and new product development”.

Later in this post I’ll break this out into 5 potential marketing applications of social media listening that can be considering.

Define your purpose

How you utilise these tools and process will depend on your requirements, internal resource and budget. I have outlined the various uses of such processes to help you identify how you can get the most from this area, yet the critical first step is to be clear on what you’re listening for. For example is your main purpose brand monitoring, conversation and engagement, customer service or just research? Some of the most popular platforms available that can help with these activities are:

Application 1. Brand Monitoring

One use of such tools is to monitor your brand online, this will allow you to understand how many times your brand is being mentioned, you can then overlay the sentiment of the conversation as well as how influential those people talking are. Here’s an example of how segments can be defined in Radian6 to review sentiment and intention by a series of competitors.

Metrics to report on performance: Volume of mentions, sentiment, influence of people talking about you

Process: Implement keywords relating to your brand, including any negative matches required to hone in on relevant matches. Run reports weekly vs the previous week, monthly against the previous month and quarterly trending year to date vs last year.

Application 2. Influencer Research

A crucial part of any marketing and campaigns in 2012 is to understand who in the industry / target audience is influential. Influencers become valued partners in campaigns helping you spread your content (should it be worthy of spreading). Influencers are way of creating value to potential customers who probably don’t know you,  influencer outreach enables you to create traffic and reach for your campaign or content in ways that more traditional channels cannot.

Metrics to report on performance: Influence score (depending on the tool you use), fans / followers. If relating to a website you may want to bring in metrics such as page rank, inbound links, pages indexed (this would be sourced from other tools though)

Application 3. Reviewing consumer brand engagement

One of the most powerful uses of social listening in my opinion. Monitoring for relevant conversations to your brand, product and campaign allows you to respond and become part of the conversation. Just the fact you are awake enough to do this and equally happy to put the effort in with customers will help grow your business. If it is done well, i.e. your brand uses this to have conversations with customers & influencers not sell to them then you will succeed.

Process: Once the system is configured to monitor the right keywords (relating to brand, products and campaigns) you need to continually monitor for conversations, the art is then determining which conversations / mentions are relevant for you to participate in. As long as you treat as a one on one conversation you are unlikely to go wrong. You should report on the metrics above weekly & monthly.

Application 4. Customer Service

A form of brand & engagement monitoring really (i.e keywords are the same) but the process and requirement is very different. Whether good or bad certain types of people will voice their opinions on products / brands because they now have efficient tools to broadcast those opinions, previously it was over the garden fence or in the local for example. This form of social listening creates a process in which those mentions are processed from a customer relationship viewpoint. Meaning if for example you are Dell and I have just bought a laptop from you which arrived with a broken power adaptor you are going to want to resolve that without damaging the brand. An example of good customer service thanks to social listening would be that my rant online is picked up, due to the intelligence of the tools my email address is matched to a record in the Dell CRM and I am flagged for a response to the rant and call from customer services, oh and my new adapter is in the post. A process run by customer services & guided / helped by brand and marketing managers.

Metrics to report on performance: Sentiment, cases raised, cases successfully resolved, replies / engagement

Application 5. Broader Market Research

A key report / insights work to complete each quarter is to understand your place in the social market place, how are you performing against competitors and what are competitors doing that you maybe are not. This is a detailed piece of work and should be not be taken lightly. Though the value gained through insights to enhance campaigns and ultimately ensure you are improving your performance in comparison is amazing.

Metrics to report on performance: Share of voice, mentions, sentiment, influence

Process: Most social listening platforms have areas to enter competitor key-terms as well as industry relevant terms, this will enable particular views on data and allow analysis comparing mentions, sentiment etc to each other brand and also aggregating scores to give metrics such as share of voice. Once you have the top level data it is then key you drill down into some of the activity causing spikes in your competitors activity, this should be deconstructed and displayed to stakeholders where relevant. With Revuto we plan to change that. By leveraging crypto and DeFi services with subscription payments, Revuto sends power back into the hands of users by allowing them not only to control to whom, when, and what they’re paying but to pay less and save their money.  

2. In a recent edition of Cardano360, CEO Majic spoke about how Revuto will be using its native token REVU to build an ecosystem with a closed-circuit economy. Can you please elaborate on that?

Revuto setup works in favor of the consumer so whenever the consumer pays for the subscription with the Revuto debit card he gets rewards in REVU tokens. More importantly, whenever a referred friend does the same, the users get a percentage of that transaction in REVU tokens.

Lastly, Revuto users can stake their REVU tokens in liquidity pools and earn yields while providing liquidity to others through micro-lending and borrowing. In short, Revuto allows its users to make their money work for them. 

3. How would you describe the utility of the REVU token? How has the reaction to the private round been?

Revu token is a token with limited supply working in a self-sustainable setup where there’s a constant demand (buying pressure) on REVU with the goal to use REVU to pay less compared to what users would usually pay with fiat money. 

4. The REVU Token public sale will begin on the 18th of May on Cardano. What are your expectations for the same?

Yes, soon we’ll launch our Public Token sale which is actually the first Public token sale on Cardano. As REVU is Cardano’s native token and our token sale platform is custom-built on Cardano, accepting ADA for REVU only, we believe we can set the steppingstone for other Cardano projects to follow.

Being the first to set up a project on a long-awaited Cardano’s ecosystem brings us into the focus so the expectations are high not only from the Cardano community but from the crypto community in general. 

5. What aspects and factors did you consider before choosing Cardano over other blockchains such as Ethereum?

First of all, building our business on Ethereum would make no sense because nobody would use our token to pay 12 Euros to Netflix and 30 for the transaction fees. In that sense, the Ethereum network has big scalability issues. For those who didn’t know, Cardan is a 3rd generation blockchain with very secure and fast transactions.

The token itself brings voting power (governance) what is a key driver to build a community of incentivized users. Then there’s a Cardano foundation and the community that’s one of the biggest supporters in the industry, and lastly, on our team, there are team members working directly for Cardano (IOHK) who’re helping us to do things right. When you combine all the aspects, the Cardano choice was obvious. 

6. What can you tell us about the significance of the launch of Revuto dApp on Cardano? According to you, what would be the measure of its success?

The measure of success would be the number of users which we could get to use both, our dApp and the Cardano native token built on the Cardano network. In that retrospective, we’re already gaining tremendous momentum because, as we speak, Revuto is getting close to almost 1M early signups. 

7. After the distribution process is over, Revuto will be introducing token staking onto its platform. As a product user, what benefits might I expect from staking my REVU tokens and locking them up in a smart contract?

Benefits for staking REVU are both for the REVU holder and for the Revuto users. Microlending and borrowing setup is there to help other Revuto members solve their short-term cashflow problems but on the other hand, staked REVU can bring a decent monthly yield to cover monthly subscription charges on its own.  

8. What benefits might a user get by participating in the Revuto Referral Program?

Apart from being awarded for every referred friend that will come and use Revuto, the referral program is set up to bring its users a decent passive income as long as referred friends are using Revuto to pay their subscriptions.
