Password haters across the land—rejoice. Following the efforts of Apple and Microsoft, Google is now a step closer to being password-free after making passkeys available to all individual account users. 

Of course, having the option doesn’t matter if you’re not sure what to do with it. Google’s new feature allows you to sign into your account from your devices with only a PIN or a biometric, like your face or fingerprint, so you can forget your ever-inconvenient password once and for all. If that sounds great to you, continue reading to activate passkeys for your Google account. 

How to set up a passkey for your Google account

Remember that at the moment, passkeys are only available for individual users, so you won’t find them on any Google Workspace account. To see what all the fuss is about, go to your Google Account page, look to the left-hand sidebar, and go to Security.

If you have Android devices signed into your account, you’ll see them listed on the passkey menu as well. Google will automatically create those passkeys for you, so you’ll be able to seamlessly access your information on those devices. 

You can also use passkeys as backups to authenticate a login on another computer or smartphone. If you’re signing into your account on a borrowed laptop, for example, you can validate that new session by choosing your phone from the list that pops up when you choose passkeys as your authentication method. Then just follow the prompts on your phone, and you’ll be good to go. 

Now, a word of caution

In general, your Google passkey should work smoothly, but you may experience some hiccups as tech companies adapt to this relatively new form of security. Passkeys use a standard called WebAuthentication that creates a set of two related keys: one stays in the hands of the service you’re trying to log into (in this case, Google), while the other, a private one, is stored locally on your device. 

The dual nature of a passkey makes this sign-in method extremely secure because the service never sees your private key—it just needs to know you have it. But if you have multiple devices running different operating systems, the fact that your piece of the passkey puzzle lives locally can cause some issues.

Apple-exclusive environments have it easy. The Cupertino company syncs users’ passkeys using the iCloud keychain, so your private keys will all live simultaneously on your MacBook, iPhone, and iPad, as long as you’re signed into the same iCloud account. Add a Windows computer or an Android phone to the mix and things start to get messy—you may need to use a second device to verify your identity. This is when the backup devices mentioned above may come in handy.

The hope is that eventually, integration between operating systems will be complete and you’ll be able to log into all of your accounts no matter the make and OS of your device. In the meantime, you can try passkeys out and see if they’re right for you. Worst-case scenario, you set them aside and instead outsource the task of remembering your credentials to a password manager.

You don’t need a Google account to join the beta, but the email address you enter must match the email address you use to buy apps from Google Play on your phone.


After you press submit, you’ll get an email from Google with instructions on how to install Digital Wellbeing on your phone. It may take up to 24 hours to receive it, so if you don’t immediately get a message, don’t worry.

Once you get your email, it’s just a matter of following the links. Tap the Access the beta now button and then the Download the Digital Wellbeing (Beta) app on Google Play link on the next screen. That’ll take you to a hidden listing on the Play Store where you can download the update.

Google Digital Wellbeing: The basics


Once the Digital Wellbeing is installed, you’re ready to start using it. However, you won’t find it in the app drawer or by searching your phone. That’s because it’s not an app, it’s a setting.

To find it, head to the Settings app and scroll down to Digital Wellbeing (it’s sandwiched between Accessibility and Google). Tap it and you’ll be taken to the main screen where you can see a pie chart representation of how much time you’ve used you phone today as well as how many times you’ve unlocked your phone and the number of notifications you’ve received. Tapping an any of the individual apps will take young a separate screen where you can see how long you’ve spent using it on a daily or hourly basis.

Android Digital Wellbeing: Dashboard

You Digital Wellbeing Dashboard is similar to the main screen, but it’s presented as a bar chart rather than a pie chart. You’ll see today’s stats first, but you can go back several days. My phone only logged data going back to July 29, but I was able to scroll through previous days with zero minutes of screen time. So Digital Wellbeing will probably track months of data once it’s live.


It’s here where you can also set timers for how long you can use your apps each day. Tap the arrow to the right of the app and you’ll be able to select a 15-, 30-, or 60-minute timer, or make a custom one. Timers are available in 5-minute increments from 5 minutes all the way up to 23 hours and 55 minutes. You can set a timer for any app except system Settings.

Android Digital Wellbeing: Wind Down

As its name suggests, Wind Down is a feature specifically designed for the end of your day. Inside, you’ll find a schedule for when you want to use it, as well as a toggle to turn on Grayscale (which strips all color from the screen) and Do Not Disturb, as well as your Night Light schedule (the same Nougat feature that reduces eyestrain by adding a blue light filter to the screen). The Night Light settings are separate from Wind Down, so you can implement it before Grayscale kicks in.


So, say you choose a schedule between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. and turn on all of the Wind Down settings. If you’re using your phone at 11, your Pixel’s screen will turn black-and-white and notifications will stop showing up. You can keep using your phone, but theoretically you’ll be able to fall asleep quicker with less stimulation.

As a brief background, there are generally three types of Dynamic Wallpapers:

1) Geographic-based files tell macOS your location and then change your wallpaper based on location and time of day. That means that the system even knows that if it is winter at your location, the later day images should be displayed sooner.

2) Time-based files simply tell macOS to change your wallpaper based on the system clock.

3) Light and Dark mode wallpapers merely change based on your system Light and Dark Mode settings. If you set it to Light Mode, you get that image, same with Dark Mode. Naturally, if you have the system set to auto switch between modes, the wallpaper will toggle with the system.

4) Bonus category? Some Dynamic Wallpapers can be built based on your system time and/or geographic location and also include the ability to switch based on your Light-Dark-Mode settings. That is what we have for you today.

Once you have a version of these Dynamic Wallpapers, you need to know how to set it on your Mac. It is fairly simple in macOS Big Sur and later. In previous generations, you needed to jump through some hoops.

Here is the simplest and cleanest way to set Dynamic Wallpapers as your desktop picture:
