Suggested January 2024 First Set Of Polkadot Parachains Goes Live With Over $3.5 Billion Staked
Polkadot’s ecosystem hit another milestone on its journey towards full interoperability recently after the first set of parachains were launched on the blockchain platform.
As per an official announcement, the five projects that have been leased a slot to run parallel to Polkadot are Acala, Moonbeam, Parallel Finance, Astar, and Clover. These Polkadot-based projects will be focused on a wide array of sectors, including DeFi, dApp development, and smart contracting, among other use cases.
The parachain auctions, which have been ongoing since 11 November, saw hundreds of projects vying for these slots by raising DOT through crowd loans and staking them to bid on the parachain slots. Each of the five successful projects will now have a parachain lease on Polkadot’s Relay Chain until 20 October 2023.
$3.5 billion staked!The Ethereum-compatible smart contract platform Moonbeam came a close second. The platform has announced the commencement of its roadmap towards going fully live on Polkadot, which is expected in January 2023. Over 200,000 participants contributed their DOT tokens to the Moonbeam crowd loan. The same had figures of more than 35 million DOT by the end of the auction.
Another much-anticipated project that won was the dApp hub Astar. Its founder Bette Chen said in a statement,
“After taking a bet on Polkadot and the Substrate framework when we started building over two years ago, we couldn’t be more excited to be launching Acala’s parachain to provide a DeFi platform and native, decentralized stablecoin (aUSD) to the Polkadot ecosystem and beyond.”
Good news aboundAs for Parallel Finance, which intends to become the “DeFi Pulse of Credit,” the protocol is focused on providing institutional-grade lending solutions. Through its focus on interoperability, Parallel Finance wants to bring further transparency in terms of the quality of borrowers and their debts.
Parallel is now a Parachain! We are pumped to join @AcalaNetwork @MoonbeamNetwork @AstarNetwork and @clover_finance on this wild ride. @Polkadot’s first round of parachains is looking good 😎!
— Parallel Finance (We are hiring) (@ParallelFi) December 18, 2023
Finally, Clover Finance is an EVM-compatible and cross-chain interoperable protocol that is aimed at scaling dApps in the multi-chain universe. Thanking its community for supporting the project during the auctions, the protocol noted in a tweet,
“Winning a parachain slot is only just beginning for Clover’s new chapter, we are going to announce more exciting news upcoming. Clover looks beyond Polkadot to the whole new multi-chain world.”
Polkadot is an interoperability-focused blockchain conceived by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood. He highlighted the importance of interactions between various blockchains in a statement. He said,
“No single blockchain design works optimally for every use case. Each chain comes with trade-offs making it good for some applications and not others. The parachain model was created with the belief that the future of Web 3 will involve many different types of blockchains working together.”
The smart contract platform will ultimately host up to 100 parachains. These will be secured by Polkadot’s main central chain called the Relay Chain. Over the 96 weeks that the slots will be leased, these projects will be focused on enhancing cross-chain communication.
The next batch of Polkadot’s parachain auctions is slated for 23 December, and the auction winners will be awarded on 11 March 2023.

No surprise that amid the COVID-19 pandemic, LinkedIn has put out a list naming a dozen “Top Voices in health care that you should be following now.” No surprise either that number 11 on the list was Sandro Galea, dean of the BU School of Public Health and Robert A. Knox Professor, named for what he shares on the platform about the pandemic’s impact on society and the health gaps it intensifies.
Boston and Beyond News Boston Pride 2023 is canceledLatest casualties of the coronavirus epidemic are Boston Pride events scheduled for June, which have been pushed to June 2023, the city and organizers said Tuesday. This year is the 50th anniversary of the event. “I know this was a very hard decision to make, and I know it’s very hard news to hear, but it’s the right decision,” Mayor Martin J. Walsh said in a statement. “As we fight the coronavirus pandemic, everyone’s safety and health is our top priority.”
Parking help for frontline healthcare workersWalsh also announced new parking relief measures for healthcare workers. If a healthcare worker gets a parking ticket, the city will waive all fees if the worker appeals the ticket by emailing [email protected] and includes both the ticket and a photo of their medical identification. This new policy also applies retroactively for tickets issued over the past month. It applies to violations like an expired meter, but not to public safety violations, such as blocking a hydrant, sidewalk, or handicap ramp. The city is also working on securing parking garages and lots across the city to offer free parking for healthcare workers. Find maps of these and other parking areas here.
Governor Charlie Baker promises major financial relief for hospitalsBaker said Tuesday that the state will infuse $800 million into the state’s healthcare system from April through July to provide health providers relief for lost revenues from missed visits and procedures canceled due to the coronavirus. Funding for this package is coming from reductions in MassHealth and from federal revenues. Half the amount, $400 million, will support 28 safety-net and high-Medicaid hospitals. This funding will address lost revenue, stabilization, and increased costs for treating COVID-19. Some $80 million will go to nursing facilities, and $300 million to other providers, including community healthcare centers.
Hotel Buckminster won’t be coming backThe Universal Hub website recognized it before we did: Kenmore Square’s historic Hotel Buckminster is closed, and not just for the duration of the coronavirus quarantine. The hotel—where the 1919 Chicago Black Sox baseball scandal was hatched, and long a favorite of folks going to Fenway Park—closed March 20 with “no plans to reopen.” And in response to queries on its Facebook page, hotel staff confirm it’s not an open-ended response to COVID-19. Facebook visitors speculate that the hotel will be renovated and reopen as a more upscale establishment.
US & Global News Eyeing racial disparities among COVID-19 victimsIn the coronavirus hotspot of Louisiana, about 70 percent of the people who have died are African American, although only a third of the state’s population is black, the New York Times reports. The data are limited, the Times says, but “the emerging statistics show black residents being infected at disturbing rates in some of the nation’s largest cities and states.” A variety of social and health disparities are being looked at as possible causes.
Latest count of coronavirus casesUnited States, 383,256; Massachusetts, 15,202.
Distraction of the day: Music reccosWGBH asked a bunch of Boston-area musicians what they’re listening to while holed up at home, away from the coronavirus. Answering were familiar names (Tanya Donelly, Kay Hanley, Bill Janovitz) and others not so much (Ballroom Thieves). The answers ranged from “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan to a Mahler symphony to “Ice Cream” by Cakeswagg.

First Impressions Of Firefox 1.0 Preview Release
First impressions of Firefox 1.0 preview release
Firefox is my second choice for a web browser. Opera comes first. No doubts about that. But Firefox in itself is a pretty decent browser. My requirement from a browser has risen with my long time usage of Opera so I just cannot move on to Firefox. Especially when it is not even in a final version. Till now at least.
Firefox today got a preview release for the version 1. Not officially released yet but still it was an offer I was too reluctant to pass by. Downloaded and installed over my previous installations. First impression after installing? I made a big mistake. More than half of my extensions were disabled as they were not supported. Even my favorite theme was disabled… I was back to a boring looking featureless browser. Damn. Rolling back sounded like a worse option, so continued with the preview release.
3 things impressed me in this release. Though, still not entirely good enough for me to think about using it as a primary browser. Let me discuss in details.
Speed is good but features?
The browser is indeed very fast. Not in loading which surprisingly is slower than Opera on my machine. The rendering speed is blazingly fast… faster than opera perhaps but I am not going to use stopwatches. But well, apparently I do not like the idea of a bare-naked browser with extensions providing the required clothing. Moreover, with every version seemingly breaking existing extensions and skins (might change in the final release and later versions), I certainly think twice before upgrading. And when I do (as I did today), most of the time I have to start from scratch.
RSS integration
Firefox is supposed to be just a browser. So, how come it now supports RSS feeds! I am not complaining for the additional feature though… my problem is that the support is uninspiring. I love the RSS detector that shows a lovely icon in the status bar. However, it functions only when the site has a Meta tag pointing to the feed. Something like this:
Find Facility
Ok, forgive my innocence but I failed to notice the new Ctrl-F menu. And I cannot seem to make the famous Find as you Type functionality work anymore. Maybe, they disabled it with the popularity of GMail and shortcuts taking over the web that I believe conflicted with Firefox find as you type. Apparently, I do like the ctrl-f toolbar even though it does not seems to auto close by itself. Keyboard shortcuts can be complicated for new guys and this toolbar let me highlight a particular word. Not as good as a dedicated toolbar as it does not do multiple word highlighting and does not do search engine searches.
New Toolbar for Popup Blocking
Overall Opinion
It is of course a very important upgrade. But someone like me who wants features and stability out of the box would keep on using it as a second choice browser for sites that fails to work in opera. I just hope they improve on the RSS integration because it is not much fun unless it is implemented properly.
Analysis: Qualcomm Just Spent $1.4 Billion To Compete With Apple’S Arm Laptops
What is Nuvia and what does it do?
Why buy Nuvia now?
Gary Sims / Android Authority
In a nutshell, Qualcomm is after Nuvia’s custom Arm design expertise. The logical starting place will be in the data center market, where Nuvia is already designing chips. Arm-based CPUs are gaining steam in the cloud computing space, with Amazon’s Graviton Arm Neoverse looking to shake up the market. This deal will therefore have caught the attention of Intel and AMD. Qualcomm has already made it clear that it plans to leverage Nuvia’s custom design approach to cover swathes of its chipset portfolio too.
5G, the convergence of computing and mobile architectures, and the expansion of mobile technologies into other industries are significant opportunities for Qualcomm.
Cristiano Amon, President and CEO-Elect, Qualcomm Incorporated
Qualcomm’s press release makes heavy mention of combining Nuvia CPUs alongside its in-house GPU, DSP, AI, and multimedia accelerators, for comprehensive platforms for a variety of markets. Smartphones, driver assistance systems, extended reality, networking, and next-generation laptops are all on the list. It’s that latter option that could turn out to be the driving factor behind the whole deal. That’s because it would provide Qualcomm with the technology to compete with Intel, AMD, and now Apple in the consumer PC space.
Qualcomm’s more recent Kryo CPUs now use off-the-shelf Cortex-A CPUs designed by Arm. This approach has worked well for smartphone processors. Cortex-A performance has proven more than good enough, leaving Qualcomm to focus on in-house GPU, DSP, ISP, and other components that play a key part in its heterogeneous approach to mobile computing.
It’s exciting to see NUVIA join the Qualcomm team … moving forward, we have an incredible opportunity to empower our customers across the Windows ecosystem.
Panos Panay, Chief Product Officer, Microsoft.
Qualcomm is assisting Microsoft with its own support for Arm-powered PCs, providing Snapdragon platforms for the Windows on Arm initiative. Current-gen performance is fine for portable home and business laptops but is underwhelming for more demanding creative applications and enterprise solutions. If the two companies share the vision for a single Arm architecture spanning mobile, PC, and server products, Qualcomm will require even more performance than Arm’s Cortex-A CPUs have offered thus far. The solution appears to be to take a leaf from Apple’s book and go down the custom architecture route.
Returning to at least some level of custom CPU design affords Qualcomm greater control over its destiny.
It’s possible that the direction of Arm’s Cortex-A roadmap may change under NVIDIA’s influence and may not align with Qualcomm’s ambitions or needs. Access to or pricing of Arm’s portfolio could also change, with NVIDIA retaining the highest performing part for internal use only. Or the business model may stay the same.
Returning to at least some level of custom CPU design affords Qualcomm greater control over its destiny. Building up an in-house design team would also be an invaluable asset in the unlikely event that Qualcomm wants to transition from Arm to an entirely new instruction set in the future. This is a sensible plan when one of your biggest competitors is set to control an essential business partner. At the same time, Arm may not be too happy at potentially losing out on-chip royalties from one of its biggest customers.
How To Find The Name Of The First Form In A Document With Javascript?
Document.forms Syntax
The following syntax will show how we can use the forms property to access the name of the first form of the document using JavaScript.
let formName = document.forms[0].name;In the above syntax, we used square brackets syntax to access the first element of the collection and then used the name property to get its name.
Steps
Step 1 − In the first step, we need to define two or more form tags in the document and then access all of them using the forms property of JavaScript.
Step 2 − In the next step, we will use the above syntax to get the name of the first form in the document.
Step 3 − In the third step, we will display the number of forms as well as the name of the first form in the document on the user screen using JavaScript.
Let us understand it practically with the help of a code example −
Example 1The example below will illustrate the practical implementation of the forms property to find the name of the first form in the document using JavaScript −
let
formElem
=
document
.
forms
;
let
firstForm
=
formElem
[
0
]
.
name
;
“The name of first form in the document: “
+
firstForm
;
In the example above, we have used two forms named as formOne and formTwo in the document. We access a list of all forms present in the document inside form, that will be of type HTMLCollection.After that, we access the first element of the list using square brackets syntax to get the first form in the document and use the name property to get the name of the form inside firstForm.
Let us see what value the forms property will return if we have two nested forms in the document.
Approach
Step 1 − In this step, we will define the two forms one inside another such that nested forms and give them particular names.
Step 2 − In second step, we use the forms property to get the list of forms present in the document as we did in previous example.
Step 3 − In third step, we will access the name of the first form using the name property and display it on the user screen using JavaScript.
Example 2Below example will show how the forms property will react in case of nested forms −
let
form
=
document
.
forms
;
let
firstForm
=
form
[
0
]
.
name
;
“The name of first form in the document: “
+
firstForm
;
In this example, we have seen that forms property consider the nested forms as single form and returns the name of the first form in the document whether it contain nested forms or not.
After reading this tutorial, one can able to find the name of the first form in the document using the forms property of JavaScript. We also learnt about a new data type HTMLCollection that is very much similar to the array data type in JavaScript and also about the reaction of the forms property in case we have nested forms in the document.

How Does a Live Dealer Work?Before the invention of online live casinos, players would visit land-based casinos and place bets in person. But with online live casinos, you don’t need to visit any land-based casino. You just need to sign-up with an online casino in Malaysia and play against real-life people while still at home.
Online live casinos have tables, trained croupiers, and a set of cameras. Plus, everything at online live casinos is automated except croupiers’ actions. For example, the croupier will deal the cards or spin the ball around the roulette wheel. As a player, you will place bets or make game choices through the software interface. And if you win, you will be rewarded accordingly.
