Speaking of storage, a pair of USB 3.0 ports on the back panel will enable communication with external devices like portable HDDs, SSDs, optical, units etc. Also, two eSATA connectors exist, plus 7.1 channel audio, a debut LED and the expected set of four DDR3 memory slots. Finally, for overclocking enthusiasts, Foxconn implemented a Clear CMOS button, along with Power and Reset ones. Making The Grade: How Wi
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) promises to bring a lot of changes to enterprise networking in 2023 and beyond. While none of Apple’s devices yet support it, it’s just a matter of time, and it’s important for IT administrators to begin planning for how the latest 802.11 standard from the IEEE will impact networks. While 802.11ac was focused on raw speed, Wi-Fi 6 and 802.11ax is focused on capacity and optimization. I’ll refer to the technology as Wi-Fi 6 for the remainder of the article, but it’s simply the marketing name the Wi-Fi Alliance has given 802.11ax.
Apple is traditionally a year behind a lot of the industry in adopting the latest Wi-Fi chips and other networking standards, and I don’t expect Wi-Fi 6 support across the Mac, iPad, and iPhone lineup until 2023 (but I’d love to be surprised). I believe this is largely due to Apple’s scale at purchasing, lead time for manufacturing, and waiting for additional optimizations from chip manufacturers.
With that being said, I do think it’s important to be thinking about Wi-Fi 6 if you are building a new network using E-rate funds or building a new campus. When I am building a Wi-Fi network, I like to plan for at least four years of use, so planning ahead for the latest Wi-Fi spec is ideal.
Why Wi-Fi 6 is Needed802.11ac brought immense speed increases to our Wi-Fi networks. For the first time, we were getting wired networking type speeds over Wi-Fi. It has served us extremely well. I can’t remember the last time I actually plugged into a wired ethernet connection. A well designed 802.11ac network blew away anything that 802.11n could offer. 802.11ac was conceived before the rapid growth of mobile devices, though. While it worked very well with smartphones and tablets, there was a lot still to be done.
Wi-Fi 6 Brings CapacityWi-Fi 6 addresses some key problems with Wi-Fi connections. One of the main ones is increasing capacity for dense environments. Setting up a Wi-Fi connection in your home is relatively easy. Unless you live in a multi-dwelling unit, it’s really one thing you can’t really screw up.
Designing Wi-Fi for the enterprise is entirely another process. You have to be concerned with co-channel interference, roaming, and other complicated issues. One of the biggest challenges at the moment is designing for capacity. As I write this article, I am at a hotel with my family. Between all five of us, we have eight Wi-Fi enabled devices. If you multiply this out by every guest in a hotel, you get a picture of capacity concerns. So how does Wi-Fi 6 address capacity?
OFDMA is one of the key pieces of technology in Wi-Fi 6. A 20 MHz channel can be partitioned into as many as nine smaller channels in Wi-Fi 6. Using OFDMA, a Wi-Fi 6 access point could simultaneously transmit small frames to nine 802.11ax enabled clients. One thing to remember as well is that Wi-Fi 6 brings back 2.4 GHz support. 802.11ac was 5 GHz only. While I do prefer the 5 GHz band (a minimum of 19 non-overlapping channels vs 3 for 2.4 GHz), 2.4 GHz is still popular due to its low cost and battery life.
How Wi-Fi 6 Helps Connected DevicesAnother key piece of the Wi-Fi 6 puzzle is called Target Wake Time (TWT). TWT allows clients to negotiate when and how often they will wake up to send or receive data. TWT increases device sleep time and, in turn, substantially improves battery life. Target Wake Time (TWT) will be very useful for both mobile devices and IoT devices (smart home). IoT style Wi-Fi 6 clients could potentially sleep for hours/days at a time to conserve battery life.
When Should You Upgrade to Wi-Fi 6?If you are building a new network for your enterprise, I would recommend to start purchasing Wi-Fi 6/802.11ax access points today. While many clients haven’t been released yet, it still makes sense to begin planning ahead. If you design a network to last four to five years, you’ll be getting ahead of the curve. I expect 2023 to be a year when clients start to trickle out, and 2023 when it explodes.
For home users, we started to see news of routers with Wi-Fi 6 technology announced late last year. I expect more news in the coming months. It’ll be interesting to see when upgraded Google WiFi and eero systems hit the market.

How To Test A Motherboard
In my 30 years of experience as a computer technician, a motherboard is one of the most challenging components to diagnose due to the number of components connected to it.
If a motherboard fails, you could have blue screens, freezing, beeps, inability to detect USB drives and other hardware, and more. This guide will teach you how to test a motherboard with a multi-meter before installing other PC parts.
You will need the following tools to complete your motherboard diagnostics testing.
A Phillips screwdriver or power switch jumper
A multimeter to check voltages
A working PSU (Power Supply Unit)
A new CMOS battery if necessary
CPU thermal paste
Set the motherboard on a flat, non-conductive surface such as a wooden table.
Install the processor and apply thermal paste.
Attach the CPU cooler and connect it to the motherboard.
Place at least one RAM module into the slot labeled (DIMM 1).
Attach the GPU to the motherboard and connect the necessary power connector if necessary. Read your GPU manual to verify.
Plug the ATX 24-pin connector from the PSU (Power Supply) into the motherboard.
Connect the monitor to the HDMI connection on the side of the board for onboard graphics or into the GPU if it’s your primary display.
Plug the PSU power cable into a surge protector or wall outlet.
To turn on the computer, use a power switch jumper, or if you do not have one available, you can even use a screwdriver to complete the power circuit shown above.
After verifying a successful POST, turn the PC off by flipping the switch located on the power supply back to the off position.
If the computer boots to the BIOS, you are good to go. Unplug everything, and install the motherboard into your case and install everything as usual. If your motherboard did not POST, retry the steps again, and if it still fails, contact the motherboard manufacturer and request an RMA to get a new motherboard.
Motherboards can be one of the most stubborn components to diagnose due to the sheer number of tiny parts embedded in them. In my experience, when motherboards fail, they typically will not boot, power on, or anything. The following steps can help narrow down your symptoms.
The Power-On-Self-Test or (POST) happens each time you turn on your computer. If your computer is operating normally, you should continue the startup. If you are unable to complete the POST, then proceed to the next step.
Verify that your motherboard is not shorting out on your case. Verify that you have correctly installed stand-off screws in all the correct screw locations inside the case.
Check your system for possible overheating. Open the case and ensure that there is not dust covering the fans, components, and motherboard. If so, use a can of compressed air found at your local hardware store to clean it.
Listen for beep codes when booting your PC. These beep codes will help you identify the faulty component or issue. For a list of beep codes and what they mean, go here.
Use the BIOS to check for updates, download and install them. If no updates are available, restore or reset your BIOS to reverse all settings to default and restart the computer.
If you still cannot access the BIOS because your computer keeps restarting, Replace the CMOS Battery. If your PC continues into BIOS after battery replacement, your motherboard issues should end. But if they do not, continue diagnosis.
Finally, remove all components other than the CPU, the CPU Cooling Fan, and the RAM. If your motherboard boots and POSTs, you will need to add one piece of hardware at a time until you find the faulty component.
If you cannot diagnose your motherboard with the steps listed above, it is time to use a multimeter. You can purchase one at your local hardware store or on Amazon. This one at Amazon sells for less than $13 and works great.
If you have a multimeter, then you will be able to detect issues with the motherboard easily. Even if you have never used a multimeter in the past, I will walk you step-by-step on how to test your motherboard for component failure.
The first thing you want to look for with the multimeter is a short circuit. These are common issues and can happen when there might be a surge in electricity. Below we will be verifying the AC voltage of the motherboard.
Standard 24pin ATX pin layout
Next, remove the motherboard from the case and refer to the layout picture or this ATX 24-pin chart to find the PINs. Using the red lead, test each of the following: (3,5,7,15,17,18, and 19) must have a 0 reading. Anything else indicates a bad PSU connector.
The last test will require you to remove the ATX power adapter and the CPU from the motherboard. Test the same ATX pins located on the motherboard. Any reading other than 0 means there is a problem with the motherboard connector.
Multimeter
To check DC voltages, follow the steps below. The steps here are slightly different than AC voltages.
If you have found that the motherboard has failed, don’t try repairing it on your own. Even if a repair is successful, improper voltage regulation could destroy everything in your computer. It is always better to have an experienced electronic technician repair the motherboard or replace it than venturing to fix it yourself.
With the computer turned off, carefully probe the back of the connector using the black lead. It should be in contact with one of the negative pins 15,17,18 or 19, registering a 0 voltage.
Use the red lead to probe and verify the following pins: Pin 16 (green in color) reading between 3-5 volts and Pin 9 (purple color) reading 5 volts.
Now, start the PC. Pin 16 (green color) should drop down to 0 volts. If it doesn’t, this is indicative of a faulty switch. (Turn off the PC)
Finally, use the red lead on Pin 8 (gray color) should read 5 volts. Start the computer and press the reset button; now, the voltage will drop down to 0 volts, then go back up to 5 volts. If not, this is a good indicator that you have a defective RAM slot, and you will need a new motherboard.
FAQsYou don’t have to have a CPU to verify that the motherboard is working and powering connected components like case fans and RGB lighting. I know because I have done this on numerous occasions.
How to test a capacitor on a motherboard?Unfortunately, there is no way to test the capacitor on a motherboard without removing the capacitor itself. However, you can visually inspect each capacitor for rust, cracks, leaks, or bulges, and this will give you a good idea that the capacitor is damaged.

A Brute Force Attack is a type of Cyber Attack, where you have a software spinning up different characters to create a possible password combination. The Brute Force Attack password cracker software simply uses all possible combinations to figure out passwords for a computer or a network server. It is simple and does not employ any intelligent techniques. Since it is math-based, it takes less time to crack a password using brute force applications rather than figuring them out manually. I said math-based because computers are good at math and perform such calculations in split seconds compared to human brains, which take longer to create combinations.
Brute Force Attack is good or bad depending upon the person using it. It could be a cybercriminal trying to hack into a network server or it could be a network admin trying to see how secure his or her network is. Some computer users also use brute force apps to recover forgotten passwords.
Speed of computing & passwords matter during Brute Force AttacksIf you are using all lower letters and no special characters or digits, it might be a work of just 2-10 minutes before a brute force attack can crack the password. However, a combination of upper case and lower case letters along with a digit (supposing there are eight digits), will take more than 14-15 years to crack the password.
It also depends upon the speed of the computer processor, as to how long it takes to crack the password of the network or normal login to a Windows standalone computer.
Brute Force Attack Prevention & ProtectionSince no special logic is applied in brute force attacks except for trying out different combinations of characters used for the creation of a password, prevention on a very basic level, is relatively easy.
Apart from using a fully updated Windows operating system and security software, you should use a strong password that has some of the following characteristics:
At least one upper case letter
At least one digit
At least one special character
The password should be a minimum of 8-10 characters
ASCII characters, if you wish.
The lengthier a password is, the more time it will take to crack the password. If your password is something like ‘PA$$w0rd”, it will take more than a 100 years to crack it with currently available brute force attack apps. Please do not use the suggested password in the example, as it is very easy to break it using some intelligent software that falls out of the realm of brute force attacks.

The ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 is a fantastic premium motherboard and the best Z690 you will find. This latest iteration features everything you need to get the best out of your Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake CPU.
If you’ve no interest in buying a 12th Gen CPU then we’d probably recommend going for a Z590 instead, but the Z690 offers maximum future-proofing.
Equally, if you’re looking to pick up a lower-end Intel CPU this board probably isn’t worth your money either, as you wouldn’t make the most out of the features available here which are geared (and priced) with high-performance users in mind.
The ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 board comes with an LGA 1700 socket as befitting an Alder Lake-compatible motherboard. As far as motherboards go it has a fairly striking look, between the integrated aluminum I/O cover and Aura Sync RGB lighting system.
