Bush Not ‘Miserable Failure” Says Aol

Currently, on Google the top four results for “miserable failure” are:

www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html – 29k – Cached – Similar pages

www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/jc39.html – 36k – Cached – Similar pages

clinton.senate.gov/ – 9k – 5 Feb 2004 – Cached – Similar pages

However, according to an article in the Direct Marketing News, the results for the same search on AOL (which as stated above uses Google for their results) does not list the George W. Bush page. Most interesting.

DMNews explains:

The links to the political figures’ sites appeared after a group of Webloggers last year began to link to Bush’s bio on Web pages with the words “miserable failure.” Bush partisans followed suit to include liberal political figures like Moore, Clinton and Carter.

AOL, which displays search results by Google, said it removed the link to Bush’s Web site under its policy to take out obviously irrelevant results.

AOL did not explain why Bush’s site qualified as link spam while those of Moore, Clinton and Carter did not, but said it would stop judging individual links.

What is Google Bombing?

—Google bomb n.

Example Citation:

Here are four types of Google Bombs whose fuses have already been lit:

1. Humor Bombs. Mathes’ original Google Bomb remains the classic of this genre. It’s pretty funny to see your friend come up in Google as the No. 1 talentless hackin the whole world. Successful humor bombs, like most Google Bombs, require search key words that don’t get a lot of traffic.

—John Hiler, “Google Time Bomb,” Slate Magazine, March 25, 2002

Examples of Google Bombs:

Search on these terms for influenced Google Bomb results:

“Miserable Failure”

“Weapons of Mass Destruction”

“great president”

This is not the first time AOL has been accused of censoring their network for political reasons.

In 2000, CNET News reported that AOL’s “youth filters” were preventing young surfers from accessing liberal websites; “your children can easily view the site of the Republican National Committee,” Brian Livingston reported at the time, “but the Democratic National Committee is blocked.”

According to chúng tôi AOL and its chat moderators have also previously closed or hidden anti-Bush chatrooms:

As I finished browsing the usual progressive and leftist websites on the internet, I became curious to search the AOL Chatroom listings. One of the public chatrooms I entered was titled, ‘Bush 4 Imprisonment.’ There were four other screen names in the chatroom when I arrived. We started discussing Bush and the 2004 election.

Our chatroom was still alive and in a deep discussion, but it was like it never existed. This prevented other people from entering or acknowledging that we even had a room. I waited a few minutes and then searched again; the chat room didn’t exist. Which was funny because there were 3 members still conversing in the room.

When such a chatroom is created, and it reaches an AOL Moderator’s attention, it won’t be long until it is silenced.

Google Says ‘Discovered – Currently Not Indexed’ Status Can Last Forever

This is stated during the Google Search Central SEO office-hours hangout recorded on February 18.

An individual named Davor Bobek joins the livestream to ask Google’s Search Advocate John Mueller about the ‘Discovered – Currently not indexed’ message and how long it can be expected to last.

That message means the page was found by Google, but not crawled yet.

There are various reasons why Google wouldn’t crawl a page, despite knowing it exists.

It could be due to technical reasons. Google may have tried to crawl the URL but the site was overloaded. If that’s the case then Google will reschedule the crawl for a later date.

Another reason for the ‘Discovered – Currently not indexed’ message could be because the website doesn’t meet a certain threshold for quality, in Google’s view.

Google doesn’t make any guarantees to crawl and index every webpage.

Even though Google is one of the biggest companies in the world, it has finite resources when it comes to computing power.

The computing resources Google uses to crawl the web are reserved for websites considered valuable and high quality.

To that end, the ‘Discovered – Currently not indexed’ status can possibly last forever.

Mueller says as much in his response, which you can read in the next section.

Google Index Coverage Report: ‘Discovered – Currently Not Indexed’

When asked how long webpages can remain discovered but not indexed, Mueller says:

“That can be forever. It’s something where we just don’t crawl and index all pages. And it’s completely normal for any website that we don’t have everything indexed.

And, especially with a newer website if you have a lot of content, then I would assume it’s expected that a lot of the new content for a while will be discovered and not indexed.

And then over time usually it kind of shifts over, like well it’s actually crawled, or it’s actually indexed, when we see that there’s actually value in focusing more on the website itself. But it’s not guaranteed.”

So, what can you do if you have a number of pages that Google has discovered but not indexed?

Rather than leaving the content as-is and hoping it will get indexed one day, you should continue working on your website to improve its overall quality.

Mueller continues:

“So from that point of view it’s not that I would say you should just wait a little bit and suddenly things will get better with crawling and indexing. It’s more that, like continue working on the website and making sure that our systems recognize that there’s value in crawling and indexing more and then over time we will crawl and index more.”

Hear Mueller’s full response in the video below.

Personal Construct Theory: George Kelly

What does the Personal Construct Theory Define?

The personal Construct Theory states that individuals develop their ideas and rules to interpret things and events around them. Given in the 1950s by George Kelly, an American psychologist, this theory views people as scientists. Like scientists, every person observes their environment, understands the events, and draws conclusions. Thus, they formulate hypotheses about how the world works and test them daily. This is why people who may be experiencing the same thing perceive it differently.

What are Constructs?

When people use their experiences and perceptions to conclude something, they use what is known as ‘constructs.’ We behave following the expectation that our constructs will predict and explain the reality of our world. These are used to test the hypotheses that individuals develop. Constructs are constantly evaluated and modified as we go through life experiencing new things.

The structure of Personal Construct Theory The Basic Postulate

The basic postulate says, “A person’s processes are psychologically channelized by how he anticipates events.” This means that humans build a construct based on how they perceive or construe an event, and this construct is used in the future to verify if that prediction was true or not. Hence, the postulate reaffirms the idea of humans acting like scientists by developing and testing hypotheses.

The 11 Corollaries

The corollaries, as suggested by Kelly, expand on the primary postulate.

Construction Corollary − No event or experience can happen again exactly as it did, but an event can still be repeated with some changes. We predict how we will behave in a similar event based on these similarities.

Individuality Corollary − People differ from each other in their constructions of events. Each person is unique and has unique experiences and perceptions, and hence, their constructs are different.

Organization Corollary − We arrange our constructs in patterns and how they relate to each other. We consider their similarities as well as their differences. We organize these constructs in a hierarchy, with some constructs subordinate to others. A construct can include one or more subordinate constructs.

Dichotomy Corollary − A person’s construction system is composed of a finite number of dichotomous constructs. The constructs we store are bipolar or dichotomous. For example, if there is a construct of ‘kindness,’ there will also be a construct of ‘unkindness.’ This is important for us to anticipate future events correctly. Just as we note similarities among people or events, we must also account for dissimilarities.

Choice Corollary − A person chooses for himself that alternative in a dichotomized construct through which he anticipates the greater possibility for the elaboration of his system. This construct explains that people choose the alternative construct that helps them expand on their experiences.

Range Corollary − A construct is applicable for anticipating only a finite range of events, and a construct may have a great range or a very short range. This means that our constructs can apply to a wide set of objects or very narrow objects.

Experience Corollary − We modify or reconstruct our constructs as we experience things we did not expect. If we observe that a construct does not predict the outcome of a situation correctly, then it must be reformulated or replaced.

Modulation Corollary − Constructs differ based on their permeability. A permeable construct will be one in which newer and bigger ideas can be included after the construct has been made. A permeable construct is open to new experiences and is capable of being revised or extended by them.

Fragmentation Corollary − A person may have a variety of construction subsystems that are incompatible with each other.

Commonality Corollary − Kelly suggested that if a group of people interprets an experience similarly, we can conclude that their cognitive processes are similar. This can be true when it comes to cultural experiences.

Sociality Corollary − This talks about how commonalities do not necessarily bring out positive relationships. To have positive relations, people must understand each other’s constructs. We must understand how another person thinks if we are to anticipate how that person will predict events.

Conclusion

The Personal Construct Theory is very significant in cognitive psychology and personality psychology. While it introduced many new concepts and terms, it has also been criticized. Despite the criticism, the theory left its mark shortly after its conception.

How To Calculate Mean Time Between Failure?

MTBF Formula (Table of Contents)

MTBF Formula

MTBF is the usual term mainly used in the field of manufacturing industries. It is the average time taken between the two failures. That is the start of last uptime to start of follow up failure. This is predominantly used to access system reliability and compare different system designs. In the current world, this is used in software industries as well for a similar type of prediction.

A formula for MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) is –

MTBF = ∑ (TOT) / F

Where,

TOT = Total Operational Time which is calculated by using the below formula

TOT = ∑ (Start of Downtime after last Failure – Start of Uptime after last Failure)

F = Number of Failures

FR = 1 / MTBF

These measures are generally very helpful in finding a failure rate which can be a preventive measure of many systems. High MTBF value means that the system is too good for operational.

Examples of MTBF Formula (With Excel Template)

Let’s take an example to understand the calculation of MTBF formula in a better manner.

You can download this MTBF Template here – MTBF Template

MTBF Formula – Example #1

The overall operating hours of a system is 10 hours per day. But there are two failures with the downtime of 1 hour and 2 hours. Calculate the MTBF and Failure rate.

Solution:

Total Down Time is calculated as:

Total Down Time = 1 +2

Total Down Time = 3 hours

Since there are 2 failures of 1 and 2 hours, overall downtime for this system is 3 hours.

TOT is calculated using the formula given below

TOT = ∑ (Start of Downtime after last Failure – Start of Uptime after last Failure)

TOT = 10 – 3

TOT = 7 hours

Hence the overall operational time is 7 hours.

MTBF is calculated using the formula given below

MTBF = ∑ (TOT) / F

MTBF = 7 / 2

MTBF = 3.5 hours

Hence the system will be down for every 3.5 hours that will result in a loss to the organization.

Failure Rate is calculated using the formula given below

Failure Rate = 1 / MTBF

Failure Rate = 1 / 3.5

Failure Rate = 0.28571

MTBF Formula – Example #2

There is a Bank bazaar website. Its availability is 24 hours per day. However, the site is not available during 12-1 PM IST and also another incident during 3-3.30 am IST. What would be the MTBF for this website?

Solution:

Total Down Time is calculated as:

Total Down Time = 1 +0.5

Total Down Time = 1.5 hours

Since there are 2 failures of 1 and 0.5 hours, overall downtime for this system is 1.5 hours.

TOT is calculated using the formula given below

TOT = ∑ (Start of Downtime after last Failure – Start of Uptime after last Failure)

TOT = 24 – 1.5

TOT = 22.5 hours

Hence the overall operational time can be calculated is 22.5 hours.

MTBF is calculated using the formula given below

MTBF = ∑ (TOT) / F

MTBF = 22.5 / 2

MTBF = 11.25 hours

Hence the system will be down for every 11.25 hours that will result in a loss to the organization.

Failure Rate = 1 / MTBF

Failure Rate = 1 / 11.25

Failure Rate = 0.08889

Failure rate per hour would be 0.08889.

Hence the system is more stable!!

Explanation

Below is the step by step approach for attaining MTBF Formula.

Step 1: Note down the value of TOT which denotes Total Operational Time. It can be calculated by deducting the start of Uptime after the last failure from the start of Downtime after the last failure. Simply it can be said the productive operational hours of a system without considering the failure duration.

T = ∑ (Start of Downtime after last failure – Start of Uptime after last failure)

Step 2: Note down the value of F. It is the number of failures occurred in a system.

Step 3: Finally MTBF can be calculated using the above formula.

MTBF = TOT / F

Step 4: Failure Rate is just the reciprocal value of MTBF. Thus the formula is,

FR = 1 / MTBF

Relevance and Uses of MTBF Formula

MTBF value simply tells about a product’s survival time. It is very important in Hardware product Industries rather than consumers. It is simply the number of failures occurring per hour. Consumers mostly go with a price-driven approach hence do not mind much about MTBF. When it comes to industries, based on MTBF values only systems with different designs are compared. This value tells about Reliability, stability, and performance of a system. Because a system’s performance relies on its stability. How often it gets a failure and how productive it is. Low MTBF always denotes that the system is not stable and not much operational. And for critical products such as Airplanes, safety equipment assets, inverters, generators, etc., performance and stability are very important. In this case, MTBF is the indicator of Performance expected from a specific system and also a metric for reliability and acts as a tool at the stage of design and production of hardware. This metric is simply known as average life expectancy. The wrong predictions of a product’s stability lead to poor designs and performance of systems. This says how often a product to be maintained to avoid breakdowns. An also MTBF is a current status indicator of performance in plant maintenance as a preventive maintenance schedule.

Otterbox Unveils New ‘Otter + Pop’ Case For Iphone W/ Built

OtterBox announced at CES 2023 today that it is partnering with PopSockets on a case designed specifically with PopGrips in mind. PopSockets are the incredibly popular plastic circles that people are attaching to the back of their iPhones.

The new “Otter + Pop” case from OtterBox + PopSockets aims to fix a few of the biggest annoyances with the concept…

The Otter + Pop case is part of Otterbox’s Symmetry Series, which is its sleek line of cases for the iPhone. On the surface, the Otter + Pop looks very similar to other Symmetry cases, but the back is where things get interesting.

On the back, you’ll find a built-in PopGrip. What’s notable here, however, is that the PopTop lays completely flush with the case. This means there is no bulge on the back of your iPhone because of your PopSocket when it’s not in use. This fixes one of the biggest annoyances with the traditional PopSocket design.

“OtterBox and PopSockets collaborating on an integrated case was a no-brainer,” said Jim Parke, OtterBox CEO. “Our fans love variety, customization and sleek protection. With Otter + Pop, we can deliver that in one thin iPhone case that combines our legacy of protection with all of the unique attributes that PopSockets delivers.”

Further, the PopTop can be removed with ease, allowing you to swap designs and even remove it completely if you so desire. Individual PopTops can be purchased starting at $8, allowing you to diversify your phone’s apparel.

The PopSocket has become an incredibly popular trend, especially among younger iPhone users. It offers several benefits, including easier one-handed use and providing a built-in kickstand. Many people, however, have found the cumbersome design to outweigh those benefits, but that seems to be the exact problem Otterbox is looking to solve.

The Otter + Pop cases will go on sale later this spring in three colors: black, blue, and mauve. According to The Verge will be available for the iPhone XS, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. There is no iPhone XR version, and we’ve reached out to ask about the iPhone XS Max. Prices start at $59.95.

If you want to try out the concept of a PopSocket before dropping $60 on Otterbox’s case, they are available for under $10 on Amazon.

About OtterBox:

OtterBox innovates bold products that deliver confidence and trust in any pursuit. From its humble beginnings with a drybox in a Fort Collins, Colo., garage, OtterBox has honed and leveraged its expertise in manufacturing and design to become the No. 1-selling smartphone case brand in the U.S. and a leader in rugged outdoor lifestyle products.2

About PopSockets:

David Barnett is the founder and CEO of PopSockets. He was a philosophy major at Emory, a physics major at University of Colorado Boulder, received his PhD in philosophy from NYU, and from 2005-2023 was a philosophy professor at University of Colorado Boulder. His research specialized in philosophy of language and philosophy of mind, before he reached enlightenment, stopped doing philosophy, and became an entrepreneur.

In 2010, Barnett was looking for a way to stop his earbud cord from getting tangled, and he achieved this by gluing two buttons to the back of his phone and wrapping the earbud cord around the buttons. As ugly as the buttons were, they worked. In the course of improving on the idea, he developed about 60 different prototypes, making the buttons expand and collapse via an accordion mechanism, so that they could function as both a stand and a grip. In 2012, Barnett launched a KickStarter campaign for an iPhone case that would have two PopSockets grips integrated into the case. In addition to getting successfully funded, the KickStarter campaign enabled Barnett to show the world his dancing prowess. Two years later, in 2014, Barnett launched the business out of his garage in Boulder, Colorado, and has subsequently sold over 40 million PopSockets grips around the world.

Note:

1 Symmetry Series is NOT protective against water. Will provide added protection against drops and shock.
