Google’s John Mueller recently offered suggestions to help ensure the meta description you provide is what’s used in search results.
These suggestions were given in a Google Webmaster Central hangout after a question was asked Search Engine Journal’s Vahan Petrosyan.
He asked for Mueller’s best recommendations for preventing Google from rewriting a web page’s meta description tag.
Google doesn’t always use the meta description provided by a web page, and Mueller goes into the reasons why that is.

It’s not uncommon for Google to generate a meta description to display in place of the one provided by a web page.
Mueller lists the most likely reasons why this would occur:
The meta description is not relevant or useful (ie, just a collection of keywords).
The exact same meta description is provided across a large number of pages.
The meta description doesn’t match what the user is searching for, but other content on the page does.
In general, Google rewrites meta descriptions to better help users understand why a particular page is relevant to what they searched for.
Sometimes it’s out of the site owner’s hands altogether.
There’s no way of getting Google to use the meta description you provide 100% of the time.

Mueller says there’s a high chance of Google using your provided meta descriptions if they meet this criteria:
Unique meta descriptions are written for each page.
They’re short enough to fit in a search results snippet.
They match what users would generally be looking for when going to that specific page.
Keep in mind that, even if the above criteria is met, Google may still decide to display a different meta description.
Let’s say, for example, a person enters a particularly obscure query.
If the answer to that query matches a specific snippet of text from your web page, then Google will probably override your meta description with that snippet of text.
If you want your exact meta description to be shown for a particular query, then make sure it’s as relevant to the query as it can be.

We try to do two things when it comes to displaying the descriptions in search results.
On the one hand we try to recognize when there’s irrelevant meta descriptions given on page, which could be like a collection of keywords.
It could be something where you have the same description across a large number of pages.
That’s something where we would probably jump in with our algorithms to try and resolve that.
And the other case is when the meta description is something that doesn’t match at all what the user is searching for.
Where we think probobably it would be easier for the user to understand why this page is relevant if we pick something from the page itself that covers those queries a little bit better with what they’re actually looking for.
Those are kind of the main situations where we end up rewriting the description that we provide in the search results.
So if you can make sure that your pages have unique meta descriptions, that are kind of short, that they would kind of fit into a snippet on a page, and that they match what users would generally be looking for when they’re going to that page then chances are pretty high that we’ll just reuse what you have in the description meta tag.

Last year, Alec Rivers, a recently minted computer science Ph.D. from MIT, had a problem. He and his co-founder Ilan Moyer had created a digitally augmented power tool and planned to sell it through their company. After drawing a shape in third-party graphics software, a would-be carpenter could push the tool over a piece of wood, plastic, or even brass. Using computer vision software, the tool would automatically adjust the path of the cutting bit to match the digital image, amending the line to within a hundredth of an inch. The team liked to think of it as “autocorrect for your hands.” But the tool didn’t look quite sharp enough for the consumer market, and had a funny name: Taktia.
“Taktia looked cool, but you couldn’t tell what it did from looking at it,” says Rivers.
So Rivers turned to an industrial designer named Matty Martin. Martin had worked for Google for three and a half years as something of a boy wonder, but wanted to try his hand at a startup. He also did woodworking as a hobby, making him a natural fit.
After months of spitballing with the two co-founders, Martin tried to re-imagine Taktia in terms of certain design principles: simplicity, approachability, and openness. Good design, he says, emerges naturally once you understand the core function of the product: in this case, an autocorrecting cutting tool.
“[As a designer,] you’re trying to figure out what makes a product special, what it’s doing,” says Martin.
After countless iterations, the team settled on a final design and rushed to finish a prototype to debut at the Bay Area Maker Faire in late May. (They were still finishing up the day before.) But in the end, Martin had replaced the clunky yellow Taktia router with a sleek, black housing and a screen embedded solidly onboard. And the tool had a new name that more directly described what the tool did: Shaper. For Martin, the handles and subdued coloring achieved his goals of making the tool more open and approachable.
“If you look at some of the major power tools on the market, they’re kind of scary,” says Martin. “Shaper’s not quite like a toy, but it’s almost the same feeling. The handles just say, ‘Hey, pick me up.’”
“We’re trying to tell a story with design. There’s a back region with the ‘brains,’ and a front region where cutting things are happening,” says Rivers.Pose Estimation
Back in 2011, Rivers was still a grad student. He decided he wanted the precision of a $10,000+ computer-aided CNC woodworking router — but in a device that was portable and affordable to hobbyists. So his first version of “Taktia” allowed users to push the cutting blade along a pattern — but only along one axis. Nice cutting tool, but lacking in the precision and ease of use of an industrial CNC machine.
So with the hardware expertise of mechanical engineering graduate student Moyer, Rivers’ created software that works as a kind “tool GPS.” As with a full-sized computer-aided CNC router, the user creates a design in software. Then computer vision algorithms learn and navigate a map of the piece of wood or other material as the tool cuts.
What makes the tool special is its application of a technique called “3-D pose estimation.” Varied domino patterns taped onto the cutting surface serve as a map that the tool memorizes. Then, as the cutting bit moves along the surface, the computer vision algorithms do real-time analysis of 2-D images taken by the tool’s camera and estimate where it is in 3-D space on the memorized domino map. The user gently pushes the tool according to the desired shape, and Shaper instantly corrects the motions to within 1/100 of an inch, across multiple axes.
Sounds impressive, but Rivers downplays the accomplishment.
“The computer vision stuff was a ton of work, but it’s not actually all that novel in terms of a technology. People have done similar kinds of things before,” he says. “It’s our application to the idea of the digitally augmented power tool of the human and the tool working together, that’s where most of the novelty is.”
And having the algorithms provide the fine cutting “brains,” and the human provide the brawn, allows Shaper to offer the precision of a $10,000 CNC machine — but the portability of a power saw. (The range of CNC machines is limited by the size of the bed into which one fixes the wood). Shaper can work anywhere the craftsman applies the domino tape, even places where the surface-to-be-cut is embedded, such as walls or floors.
It uses machine vision software and onboard motors to “autocorrect” the carpenter as he pushes the cutting bit.Who Will Buy It?
Still, as a small company with just one product, the guys at Shaper wonder just who will pay for such a tool.
“We don’t know what’s ultimately going to be the killer app,” says Rivers. “We know makers do a little bit of everything. We want to sell it to makers and see what they do with it. And then tack from there.”
The team had originally planned a crowdfunding campaign for the summer. But instead they will launch an open beta version, accessible from the company website, with the goal of gathering user feedback. Rivers wants to figure out just what the market is for a sub-$1,500 digitally augmented power tool — is this something just for hobbyists, or a tool that professionals will want to buy?
Market research can hold its own surprises. Before visiting a woodworking group in Minneapolis, Rivers assumed his audience would be impressed by his demo of Shaper cutting tiny replica of the United States out of plywood.
“When we showed them how it can cut the U.S.A., they were like ‘OK, fine. But can it do a straight line?’” Rivers says. “Then we cut a perfect straight line, freehand, with no guide, and they lost their shit. One of the guys picked up the piece of wood and ran around the office saying ‘look at this, look at this!’”
“Being able to cut perfect straight lines, perfect circles, perfect right angles? Easily, every single time? That’s what’s going to convince people.”

The social media giant has now rolled out its Meta Verified program for users who want to get a blue tick for their profiles and gain access to better account features.
Oddly, the idea seems to have come from Elon Musk’s efforts at putting a subscription-priced blue check option for Twitter users who want to get verified.
While Musk was heavily criticized for implementing this in late 2023, not only has Meta now copied it, they even imitate the same symbol, but at a slightly higher monthly price.
In any case, Facebook/Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg announced this monthly subscription option for Instagram and Facebook last month. According to his original announcement, program trials would roll out in Australia and New Zealand.
Now that these were shown to apparently be successful, the paid blue tick option is coming to the United States and other regions.
For the time being, however, users who want to sign up still need to join a waitlist.
According to Meta, its Meta Verified program is aimed at making both Instagram and Facebook safer for users who want to see trustworthy social media accounts for their favorite brands, influences, celebrities and organizations.
The accounts who want to pass through the extra verification required by the new Meta Verified program will need to prove their authenticity with ID and other steps.
As a result, they’ll obtain better customer support access in the case of account freezes and better options for account promotion.
For the billions of individual and business accounts on both Facebook and Instagram, gaining access to genuine human technical support (or even half-functional automated tech support) is nearly impossible so far.
This has applied in numerous cases even for accounts with enormous follower counts and lots of presence on the two platforms.
Given Meta’s enormous, multibillion-dollar annual revenues and profits, you’d think they could have long since invested in a process for helping users; apparently, the only hurdle was the revenue gained from an $11.99 subscription fee.
Becoming Meta Verified means uploading a government-issued ID with a photo and activating two-factor ID. Users who do these things and pay their monthly fee get their blue tick, exclusive stickers for stories and reels and 100 “stars” (Facebook’s streaming video currency) per month.
On the other hand, Meta Verified users won’t be able to change their account username, real name, photo, or date of Birth without verifying again.
This is worth keeping in mind for creators who do like changing these things often on their Instagram and Facebook accounts.
Meta hasn’t given specific details about how successful its Meta Verified program was in Australia and New Zealand. That they’re unrolling it in the U.S. now doesn’t really reveal much either.
After all, this is a company that’s famous for doubling down on unpopular and sometimes dysfunctional new “features”.
Users who gain access to Meta Verified can subscribe for the desktop version at $11.99 per month or obtain the mobile and web version for $14.99. It’s unclear why these two are priced differently since it’s doubtful that one costs Meta more than the other to run.

One of the biggest changes to specs is the high-fidelity full-color passthrough which opens up a world of AR possibilities, much more like we see on the upcoming Apple Vision Pro. There are higher resolution displays promised, and the build has been slimmed down a fair amount.
