What Is HDMI?

HDMI is an abbreviation of ‘High Definition Multimedia Interface’, and it refers to an interface that is used for transferring HD data from one device and transferring it over to another.

This is how (mainly) TVs are able to access HD sound and visuals and is done through the use of just one simple HDMI cable.

What Is DisplayPort?

DisplayPort is quite similar to HDMI, in that it is a digital interface that is used to transfer high-definitiontop audio and video from one device to another.

What Is The Difference Between HDMI And DisplayPort?

The major difference between both HDMI and DisplayPort is their intended use cases, and there are some speed considerations too. HDMI cables are generally intended for use with consumer electronics such as televisions and video game consoles.

How To Encode/Decode Data Using Base64 And Why

Base64 is a popular binary to ASCII encoding scheme designed to reliably transfer binary data across channels that have limited support for various content types. This article goes over the basics of Base64 encoding, how it works and details different command line and graphical ways to encode your own data using Base64.

What Is Base64 Encoding

Base64 is an encoding technique, which converts binary data, such as images and video, into ASCII format (an encoding scheme for representing text data in a computer systems.). Since binary data consists of strings of 0s and 1s, Base64 encoding works by converting these characters into a definite set of ASCII. The result can be easily decoded by mapping the ASCII characters into the binary value.

Below you can find a list of standard ASCII characters used in Base64 encoding.

Number characters: 0-9.

Uppercase alphabet characters: A-Z.

Lowercase alphabet characters: a-z.

Two special characters: “/.” and “+”.

Why Is Base64 Encoding Used

When performing a file transfer online, binary data from the file is chopped into chunks which are called packets. These are then sent to the receiver using different protocols.

Here is where the problem arises. If the receiver is unable to decode the binary file format from the sender, it can lead to data loss or corruption. Therefore, it’s considered good practice to first covert the file using Base64 encoding before sending it to the user. Base64 will encode the characters into ASCII format, which the majority of machines can read. And given the wide adoption of Base64 encoding, you can basically employ Base64 encoding on any machine.

What Is Base64 Encoding Used For

Base64 is widely used to encode text, images, musics, videos etc that you want to transmit across the web. One of the established use cases for Base64 is email attachments. Files attached to an email are encoded using Base64 behind the scenes before they are sent off along with the email to their destination.

With Base64, encoded images can directly be added to HTML documents or in CSS files. This technique can help reduce the number of requests from clients and make your website more performant. You’ll need make sure to compress the image before encoding, though. Otherwise it will result into very big file sizes and slow down the website (alternatively, you can use webp file format to compress the image).

If you are transferring a big BLOB (Binary Large Object File) across the internet, it’s actually mandatory to encode the data using Base64. Otherwise if some network packets happen to get lost during the transfer, the data inside the file may become corrupted and your file will be no longer usable.

Another very popular but rather niche use for Base64 encoding is setting a custom iPhone charging sound. The new charging sound can be Base 64-encoded to ASCII using the Shortcuts app on Apple’s mobile devices.

How to Encode Data with Base64 in Javascript

For this example we’ll define a variable named word which contains the string “Hello”.

How to Encode & Decode with Base64 in Linux

Every Linux distribution comes with a Base64 encoding and decoding utility. If you are on Windows, you can use the Windows subsystem for Linux (WSL) to run the the terminal commands examined below.

With Command Line

To convert a string into Base64 encoding, at first echo the value and pipe the output into Base64 command.

Base64 encoding uses a 6-bit system, while normal binary files use a 8-bit system. 8-bit is called a byte. As Base64 encoding outputs ASCII characters which are in 8-bit and since Base64 uses a 6-bit system, 2-bits remain unoccupied for every byte of data. If you do the calculation, the Base64 encoded file is 33% larger than the original file.

Does Base64 encoding translates into encryption as well?

No. Encoding and encryption are two different things. Encoding means conversion of one format to another, while encryption means concealing information so that no one can access it without a password. Encrypted files usually have a password to decrypt the information, while encoded files can be decoded easily using the proper algorithm.

How to check if a string is Base64 encoded or not?

If the string is a combination of what appears to be a jumble of characters, then it may be Base64 encoded. To make sure, see the characters used in the string. If the characters are in the range of A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and “+”, “/.”, then this is a Base64 encoded string. To decode its value, use any of the techniques mentioned above.

Hdmi Port Not Working On Pc: 8 Ways To Fix

Nothing beats the feeling of going to an important meeting to present your work on PowerPoint when all of a sudden a faulty HDMI port gives you the gift of a black screen. 

The only way to see if your system recognizes your HDMI port is by checking if the device plugged into the HDMI port is properly functioning. To do this, look for these immediate signs:

The picture you get is distorted or glitching

There is no sound output

There is a black screen even though the Monitor is plugged in

The Cable is visibly damaged, loose or bent

The HDMI port is damaged, bent or scratched

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s time to investigate and resolve the problem.

The common symptoms of a bad HDMI port are a lack of sound, image distortions or just no output at all. If the issue is hardware-related, the fix could be as simple as replacing the damaged cable. If there is software incompatibility, then in most cases updating your HDMI and GPU drivers will do the trick.

The following are the most common reasons you have issues with the HDMI port properly receiving and sending data.

There is an issue with the HDMI cable

There is an issue with your PC ports

The Monitor is faulty or not set up properly

You haven’t configured the PC to display a screen

There is an issue with your GPU / Motherboard drivers

Laptops display HDMI ports under the device manager. If you see yours correctly listed there, there is no issue with your laptop recognizing the HDMI port. To check if this is the case, please perform these steps:

I use a desktop PC so that the HDMI port won’t show up. Still, the Device Status is displayed on another Communication Port. If you see this status for the port on your laptop, proceed further.

Below are all the necessary troubleshooting steps to resolve these potential causes that prevent your HDMI ports from working correctly. Go through the steps in the given order to fix your HDMI issue.

Before you attempt any other troubleshooting steps, there is no point if the port itself is physically damaged or the HDMI cable is faulty. This is the correct way to check your HDMI port for physical damage:

Unplug the HDMI Cable and check if the middle section is bent, chipped or its conductive plating is scratched or removed.

Perform the same steps for the HDMI cable: Check if the connector part is loose, shaking or bent. If the cable is physically deformed, it’s not correctly transmitting data to your central Monitor – Replace it with another one.

After confirming that the HDMI port and Cables are in working order, proceed with the Software fixes:

The way to force your PC to scan for newly plugged in devices manually is to check for hardware changes in the Device Manager tab. Here are the steps:

If you now see your display/ device correctly showing up in the Device Manager under “Monitors”, restart your PC to get the HDMI port to work correctly. 

This is perhaps the most effective troubleshooting step. The goal here is to force your PC to display your screen from the HDMI port correctly:

These settings tell your PC what configuration to display information on your Main Screen. If you have a laptop, make sure that Second screen only or Duplicate is enabled. 

Having an outdated GPU driver can prevent the proper display output on some external monitors. Since the GPU’s in desktops also contain the physical HDMI output port, keeping their drivers up to date can prevent HDMI related issues.

Your first option for updating any GPU drivers is by installing and running either NVIDIA GeForce Experience or AMD’s equivalent. 

The second option is to force Windows to manually update them via accessing the Device Manager update function.

This troubleshooter is useful as it forces windows to find and repair any possible issues with hardware components. It is already built in by default, but the way you access it is slightly different.

To open the hardware and Devices Troubleshooter you need to access it via the command prompt by manual input.

After the troubleshoot is done, simply restart your computer to apply the changes and see if your port is properly working now.

Pending updates are any updates that aren’t automatically installed by the windows update software. As these updates are seen as non essential, users need to manually install them.

Here is how to install pending driver updates:

This is how any outstanding updates will appear, in my case there was an optional driver for my PC monitor. These updates can contain important data that the devices work as intended, and can interfere with their recognition by HDMI cables.

Running windows in safe mode will force all applications and settings to run at their default values. If some data regarding the HDMI controllers was corrupt, safe mode could potentially fix that issue.

To run your windows in safe mode do these steps:

During Safe mode, try unplugging and then plugging the HDMI cable to see if your external device gets properly detected now.

If there are some issues in the Registry files log, your hardware components might not appear correctly. To fix the registry, follow these steps:

Sometimes returning to a previous driver version can remove some compatibility issues between your GPU and Monitor that are connected via an HDMI cable. 

Please let this be the last step that you attempt and make sure to keep a backup of your system files before you attempt to roll a driver to a past version back. 

To Roll Your GPU / Monitor Driver to a Prior Version Follow These Steps

Restart your computer after rolling back to a prior driver version and try to plug and unplug your HDMI after restart to see if the issue persists.

A similar fix is available for your PS4 the same way as the TV. Ensure that no other HDMI cables are plugged into your main monitor/TV besides the HDMI cable from the PS4.

Locate the “Input” button on your remote controller 

Navigate to the “Output“/”Input” tab via the arrow buttons

Find the option that lets you change your Input port

Navigate to select “HDMI 1” and set it as the default output

If this does not work, try “HDMI 2“, etc.… until you get the correct picture to display

If these settings are done on your PC, you also have to check your PS4 inbuilt options to make sure that the HDMI cable is correctly selected as the Output/Input for your screen.

If none of these fixes work, try the following:

Use another HDMI cable to make sure the current one is not faulty

Physically inspect the HDMI connection on your PS4 and make sure it’s plugged in on both sides.

Restart your PS4 by holding the power button for 10 seconds. 

If you have done all previous troubleshooting steps and still get no output from the HDMI port, you have to troubleshoot the TV screen itself. 

The fix to force your TV to display a picture is very easy to do.

Locate the Input button on your remote controller 

Navigate to the Output/Input tab via the arrow buttons

Find the option that lets you change your Input port

Navigate to HDMI 1 and set it as the default output

If this does not work, try HDMI 2, etc.… until you get the correct picture to display

Check to see if your HDMI cable is appropriately set up.

Many TV’s have service providers that offer their Output terminal or router. Check if your HDMI cables are connected ONLY to the laptop/ computer / Console device. 

An outdated or missing driver is a common fix to having no input or output from your Monitor’s in-built speakers/ microphone. If your HDMI port shows a picture but no sound, try these steps:

In my case, the HDMI port was working correctly, and the drivers were up to date, but the Display itself came with factory settings that disabled sound by default. To check if the sound is enabled on your screen, follow these general steps:

Locate the button that brings up your Display Menu

Go to the Sound Settings and check if it is enabled

Make sure that the screen is displaying through the correct port. Some VGA ports, for example, will only output a picture without any sound.

If you applied these steps and still have no audio output, do the following:

Try swapping out the connector cable to your Monitor

Try the Monitor with a different device to check if its faulty 

In case these steps don’t work you can run the sound troubleshooter instead.

This is an inbuilt windows troubleshooter and it is useful for finding the exact source of the problem. Many times it will display an error message like: Sound output not found, or microphone is not plugged in, etc.

The reason why your devices that are plugged into an HDMI are not correctly working is either because:

The HDMI port or cable are physically damaged or bent

The Drivers for your PC are not up to date, and they are preventing a picture/ sound from appearing

You have not configured your Display to be the main screen

The HDMI port you selected to be used is the incorrect one

Why And How To Opt Out Of The Apple Card Arbitration Clause

While you should always read the consumer agreements and policies that contain a lot of “small print” before you sign them, how often do you actually read them, especially in their entirety? Yes, some people do read them, others scan them, and still more just scroll down and tap Agree.

In this article, we’re talking about the Apple Card Customer Agreement, and specifically, the arbitration clause.

You can Google the term if you’re unfamiliar and find plenty of resources that explain an arbitration clause and arbitration process in full detail. But in a nutshell, the arbitration clause in a contract states that the parties will resolve disputes through an arbitration process which presents the evidence in front of a neutral third party.

So now let’s take a look at what exactly the arbitration provision in the Apple Card Customer Agreement states and how you can opt out of it.

Arbitration clause in the agreement

Goldman Sachs is the backer of the Apple Card and offers up a PDF that you can read online if you don’t yet have your Apple Card. If you do have your card, you can also check out this agreement on your device.

Then, zip on down to page 14 of the document and you’ll see Arbitration Provision.

Here are some of the key points of the clause, starting with the Acknowledgement of Arbitration:

By accepting this Agreement or using your Account, unless you reject arbitration as provided below, you acknowledge that YOU ARE GIVING UP THE RIGHT TO LITIGATE CLAIMS (AS DEFINED BELOW) AND THE RIGHT TO INITIATE OR PARTICIPATE IN A CLASS ACTION. You hereby knowingly and voluntarily WAIVE THE RIGHT TO BE HEARD IN COURT OR HAVE A JURY TRIAL on all Claims subject to this Agreement.

Next, comes the How to Reject this Arbitration Provision:


There is obviously a lot more included in the arbitration clause that I encourage you to check out on the last few pages of the agreement.

Reasons to reject the arbitration provision

Some of you might be asking why you should opt out of the arbitration clause. Here are just a couple of things to consider.

1) If you agree to arbitration then you agree to have any disputes settled by that third-party arbitrator we mentioned earlier, rather than by a court of law.

Now, consider this statement of the agreement in the Arbitration section.

You or we may elect, without the other’s consent, to resolve any Claim by individual binding arbitration unless the Claim has been filed in court and trial has begun or final judgment has been entered.

2) There are two ways arbitration provisions can work; voluntary or forced. Voluntary means that both parties agree to submit their disputes to arbitration after the issue comes up. Forced means that the company requires the consumer to submit their dispute to arbitration as a condition of the product or service.

The Apple Card Customer Agreement is a forced arbitration. And while the National Association of Consumer Advocates site explains voluntary arbitration is fine, forced is another story:

What’s wrong with arbitration?

And furthermore:

Forced arbitration clauses generally bind the consumer—not the company. The way many forced arbitration clauses are written, the seller retains its rights to take any complaint to court while the consumer can only initiate arbitration.

So just keep in mind that by accepting the arbitration clause and not opting out that you give up your right to sue, participate in a class action lawsuit, or appeal the decision.

Opting out of the arbitration clause

Contacting the company to reject the arbitration provision can be done a few different ways. Page 2 of the Apple Card Customer Agreement has the contact information as follows:

Displayport 2.0 Launches, Promising 8K Video Support By Late 2023

While U.S. broadcasters are still mired in 1080p, foreign markets are already looking at 8K video—and that’s exactly what the new generation of DisplayPort technology, DisplayPort 2.0, is designed to address.

DP 2.0 offers three times as much bandwidth as DP 1.4a, the current standard. While DP 2.0 keeps the four available data lanes as its predecessor, the available link rate has been increased up to 20Gbps per lane with 128-bit/132-bit channel coding. That translates into a maximum of 77Gbps, with support for 8K video: 7680×4320 at 60Hz, with full color 4:4:4 resolution at 30 bits per pixel for HDR.

DP? HDMI? What’s the difference?

As TechHive’s Michael Brown has noted, the differences between HDMI and DisplayPort boil down to this: HDMI was designed primarily for consumer electronics applications: Blu-ray players, TVs, and video projectors. Meanwhile, VESA designed DisplayPort to be the ultimate display interface for computers, so it complements rather than replaces HDMI. But the two standards still compete in the PC space. 

More USB-C implementations now include support for DisplayPort, but the legacy HDMI connectors are still a staple of laptops and desktops. Here are the differences between the two video standards.

HDMI has also moved to a next-gen interface. In 2023, HDMI 2.1 was released, with support for up to 10K resolutions and dynamic HDR. But HDMI 2.1 also supports just 48Gbps, versus the 77Gbps DP 2.0 allows.

Paving the way for 8K

VESA noted that Japanese broadcaster NHK has already begun broadcasting in 8K, including plans to broadcast the 2023 Tokyo Olympics in that resolution. Not a single U.S. broadcaster offers a 4K package, though some Netflix content can be delivered in 4K with the appropriate subscription. VESA said it hopes the new standard will help move things forward. 

What video resolutions will DP 2.0 enable? 

VESA provided a list of supported video configurations that DP 2.0 will enable, so you can begin thinking of what your PC of tomorrow might look like.

One 16K (15,360×8,460) display @60Hz and 30 bits per pixel (bpp) 4:4:4 HDR (with Display Stream Compression, or DSC)

One 10K (10,240×4,320) display @60Hz and 24 bpp 4:4:4 (no compression)

One 8K (7,680×4,320) display @60 Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 

Dual-display resolutions:

Two 8K (7,680×4,320) displays @120Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)

Two 4K (3840×2160) displays @144Hz and 24 bpp 4:4:4 (no compression)

Three 10K (10,240×4,320) displays @60Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)

Three 4K (3,840×2,160) displays @90Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (no compression)

Using the USB-C connector in what’s known as DP Alt Mode, as opposed to the traditional DisplayPort cabling, also offers a PC maker the option of splitting the four data lanes up in pairs. One pair can be used for general I/O and one utilized specifically for video. What this means is that essentially 38.7Gbps will be allocated for video and another 38.7Gbps for data, cutting down the available video configurations to this:

Three 4K (3,840×2,160) displays @144Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (with DSC)

Three QHD (2,560×1,440) @120Hz and 24 bpp 4:4:4 (no compression)

One 8K (7,680×4,320) display @30Hz and 30 bpp 4:4:4 HDR (no compression)

The open question will how desktop, notebook, and chip makers will implement DP 2.0, or whether they’ll choose HDMI over DP, or vice versa. About the only answer we have comes from Intel, which publicly touted its contribution of the Thunderbolt 3.0 standard to support DP 2.0. That, at least, should mean you’ll see DP 2.0 support in products powered by Intel’s Core processors.
