A plane drawing a white contrail line across a blue sky is clearly thousands of feet above the ground, but how high is it flying exactly? It turns out that the precise altitude an airliner has at any given point in the flight has to do with a variety of factors, such as the plane’s weight, the temperature and weather, what the pilot requests, a protocol involving what direction the plane is headed, and of course what air traffic control says to do. 

When it comes to aircraft altitudes, here’s what’s up.

Tom Adcock, a retired air traffic controller and now the director of safety and technology for the labor union National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), gives a similar estimate, pegging most traffic as occurring in the “upper 30s” and some of it reaching altitudes of 41,000 or 43,000. A Boeing 757 can fly as high as 42,000 and a 767 at 43,000; 747-400s can go higher. Various aircraft types have different maximum service ceilings.

Controllers take into account the compass direction an aircraft is flying in when giving a pilot an altitude. Although altitudes like 38,000 and 39,000 are both even numbers, “38” and “39” are even and odd. Westbound flights get even numbers like 38,000 feet, while eastbound flights receive odd numbers like 39,000. That way, aircraft traveling in opposite directions have a built-in amount of vertical spacing between them. Aircraft heading northeast or southeast would still travel at an odd altitude, while northwest or southwest would be even. “There are exceptions to the rule,” says Cox, noting that hypothetically, if he was heading east at night and wanted 32,000 feet, he’d still request it. “Worse they can do is say no.” 

In a way, that odd-even system mirrors a pattern on the ground far below, where interstate highways historically received numbers that reflect their directions: Interstates that run east-west got even numbers (Route 80, for example), with the lowest numbers toward the south of the country, and the north-south interstates got odd numbers, with the lowest numbers beginning in the west (Route 5). Here’s more on that road number system.

Getting a better altitude 

A number of variables go into determining the precise altitude an aircraft occupies at any given time, and Cox says generally higher altitudes are better. “You want to be pretty much as high as you can,” he says. “The jet engines are more efficient at higher altitudes, and there’s less air resistance.” A pilot is incentivized to burn less fuel because they would prefer to conclude their flight with more fuel in reserve, rather than less, to give them more options in case of delays while airborne, Cox says. 

He says that higher-is-better rule of thumb holds true on brief hops, too. “You’d be amazed—even on short flights, the most [fuel] efficient way to do it is climb the airplanes up to high altitude, pull the power back, and then start back down,” he says. “I may run up to 31,000 feet and I won’t be there five minutes.”

The flight management computer gives a pilot information about the plane’s optimal altitude as well as their maximum altitude, taking into account the aircraft’s weight and the temperature of the air. An aircraft can climb higher after it burns off fuel and becomes lighter. 

“Pilots will stay as close to either optimum altitude or max altitude as they can,” Cox says. The goal is smooth air, and low headwinds if flying west—and climbing high can accomplish that. Meanwhile, an air traffic controller may ask a plane to climb to a higher altitude than the aircraft can manage at that time, so the pilot will need to decline the request. 

Commercial jets aren’t the only planes in the skies. A pilot in a Cessna 172 out for a Sunday jaunt will be below 10,000 feet (the planes aren’t pressurized), perhaps puttering around at 5,000 feet or so. A commercial turboprop would be above those aircraft but below the jets—a Bombardier Q400 like Alaska Airlines flies isn’t made to fly above 25,000 feet, for example. Turboprops like those might be in the “low 20s,” says Adcock, of NATCA. 

At the tippy top are the jewelry-encrusted people in private jets, where Learjets and Gulfstreams occupy the rarefied air at around 45,000 or higher, even up to 51,000 feet.

Something special happens even higher. Cox recalls that the supersonic Concorde flew at 60,000 feet. “When you get that high, the sky gets real, real, real dark blue, and you can see the curvature of the Earth,” he says. (Space itself doesn’t technically start until you get much, much higher.) “Having been on Concorde, and been at 60,000 feet, you can see it pretty clearly there.”

You’re Not Going To Get The Links If You Don’t Do The Work

Lately I’ve had a thought burning in my mind – what’s the point of the title ‘SEO’. Obviously, it implies that we’re able to optimize sites for search engines, and (hopefully) gain clients’ sites visibility within search engines.


Why then, when we SEOs know Google still definitively uses links as a key metric for ranking, are we so afraid to touch them?

Shouldn’t this be a big concern for us? If we’re the professional optimizers, how can we not optimize such a key component? And yet, more and more, you see SEOs leaving behind the optimization portion and aim for more extended goals. Get traffic, build content, improve conversions, increase social, build brands.

Great goals, and certainly something that shouldn’t be ignored. But what happened to the optimization? Is it over? Is it dead? Or has search engine optimization, and link building especially, become harder?

I think there can be no doubt that as time has gone by Google has increasingly made it harder to build links. But building great links hasn’t gotten any harder. High quality, relevant, authoritative links have always been hard. Nothing new there – Google’s only yanked the rug out from under spammy link building tactics.

So is SEO itself worth still pursuing, or is it more important to focus on the marketing principles that more and more SEOs are flocking to?

Honestly, I don’t think the two should be mutually exclusive. I believe there’s a real need for both optimization and marketing. Things such as brand building, resource building, conversion optimization, and general marketing truly are important.

But true search engine optimization is just as vital for websites – and that most certainly includes pursuing link building.

Link earning versus link building

Links continue to drive conversation within the SEO world. Google’s crack down on spammy links has caused the expected ripple throughout the community – and now link building is often discussed as ‘link earning’.

But let me ask you a serious question, before I go on. Take a moment and truly think about it. What is the difference between ‘link earning’ and ‘link building’?

Have it in your mind?

Link building implies manual action. Someone is taking purposeful action in order to acquire a link.

Link earning implies a link that has been acquired by creating something worth sharing.

I can see why link earning has become a popular term – it’s what Google promotes, and helps a site doubly; a valuable, sharable resource has been created for the website that will now receive shares, which will probably go beyond just links. Meanwhile, manually building a single link often only results in just the link.

So link earning is great, in an ideal world. Unfortunately we live in the real world, and have to face reality (or the internet version of it).

The sad fact is that 99% of websites don’t have the audience engagement necessary to ‘earn links’. Hell, make that 99.99999%

Real link building has always been based upon added value, and then manually pursuing optimized links for that piece of added value, whether it takes the form of a resource, a guide, a video, or even a product (yes products can add value).

If you’re not working to optimize (eh hem, SEO) your content, including link building, then odds are you’re missing out on serious opportunities. Odds are, your content isn’t faring as well as it should. And in reality, you’re not much of a marketer, because you’re leaving real opportunities on the table. Opportunities that start with optimization via link building.

I mean, even content marketing has marketing in the title. And if you’re not acquiring links in your online marketing, you’re not working effectively.

Getting links takes work

Acquiring links takes work. This is twofold – first, creating something worthy of links, and second actually receiving the links.

First, an obligatory head nod to Rand’s “my publish button is my link building strategy” (that’s a paraphrase).

In reality, most websites don’t have any kind of following. And even if they do, it’s still hard to receive the links they should.

The SEO industry is probably one of the most equipped (and likely) industries to actually give editorial links.

Think about the process of acquiring a great link 100% naturally:

Create something really great worth sharing

Have a built up community that follows your content

Have the relevant audience that your content resonates with

Have a portion of that audience actually own websites

Have a portion of the audience that own websites be in control and managing that site, actively

Have a portion of the audience that owns and manages a site engaged enough to go to the effort of linking to your content

A portion of those will link in a manner that will have a strong SEO impact

Pretty simple, huh?

Or you could do the work required to actually required to build quality links. Work naturally suited to content creation such as:

Identify your target audience

Recognize a need

Clearly define the purpose and goals of your content/resource

Create a target list of link/promotional opportunities

Reach out to that list in a personable manner

Follow up as needed

And, while you’re at it, you could attempt to build a relationship and foster community engagement.

Building a relationship doesn’t mean you need to become best friends or even chat every week with anyone who responds positively to your outreach. In reality, just make sure you’re engaging in the community of your peers and targeted audience. That’s all.

Do Links Still Matter?

It is my firm opinion that you’ll never get (build, earn, acquire, whatever you want to call it) links effectively without putting in the work.

There are, as always, a few exceptions to the rules. Websites that have managed to build a large cult following, and have a continually active and engaged audience. But for the average website—not to mention an ecommerce site—links don’t flow naturally.

So that leaves us with one question – do links still matter?

There can be no doubt they have in the past.

And, as Matt Cutts recently stated, links are still the best signal of authority and relevance Google has.

So to Google, they do. Should they to webmasters everywhere? Well, if those sites care about Google, I’d say it’s a safe bet.

Will social, authorship, citations, and the 200+ other signals Google has erode the effectiveness of links with time?

Perhaps, but it’s going to be quite a while before I would expect to see this be the case, and even then links will more than likely be a strong signal to Google.

Google is like the Titanic – they’re so large that even a slight course change can send waves through the entire web, not to mention the SEO community. But are they able to do a 180 degree turn with any speed? No.

Links are, and will continue to be, a very important factor into online visibility.

Links are after all the very foundation on which Google as a search engine was built.

Although Roblox isn’t actually a resource-monger, as its system requirements are quite modest, a weak connection might not be able to accommodate high-quality settings, even though your PC can.

Or, other times Roblox can have high ping but a good Internet connection, in which case, the graphics settings are to blame. As a result, you may start to experience lag spikes, especially if you’re not the only one using the Internet.

One quick way to solve high ping in this situation is to lower the game’s graphics settings. If you’re still experiencing high ping after doing so, you can at least rule out your connection’s inability to process traffic while using high graphics settings.

If you have other apps that may use a lot of bandwidth running on your PC, it’s a wise thing to force-close them before running Roblox if you want lower ping.

For instance, torrenting clients can easily sponge up large chunks of your bandwidth without you even noticing it.

What to do when Roblox has high ping but a good Internet?

Ping is solely determined by the time it takes packets to reach the server at the other end. You have two options: use a different server that is closer to you and thus has a lower ping, or use a different server that is farther away and so has a higher ping.

If there is heavy traffic between you and the server, you should play at different times or with a different ISP that does not have the same path to the destination.

If you consume the limited resources allotted to your server by Roblox, it will take longer for packets to be processed and events to be registered, increasing your ping. This is where a VPN comes in handy, with split-tunneling to avoid network congestion.

All things considered, there’s a lot you can do about Roblox ping issues, ranging from flushing your DNS to using a VPN for Roblox or even updating your system drivers.

A Psa On How Not To Fly Drones

Yep, that’s me crashing a quadcoptor on live national television last week. Hovering one moment, careening into an innocent cameraman the next.

At Popular Science we talk, read, and write a lot about drones. We put them on our magazine covers and a few of us fly them. We see huge promise in the devices, and the communities that use them. So when Fox & Friends invited us on last week to talk drone safety, I agreed to help.

Here’s how it went down.

The night before the segment, a producer gave me a ring. Could I fly a drone in the studio for visual effect, she asked? Yes. I’m not a professional pilot, but I’m no slouch, either. I’ve flown a number of drones over the years, and–after a polishing up in the office the night before–I felt confident I could levitate one while answering a TV anchor’s questions. That was my first mistake.

The next morning, I arrived at the studio, DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ in hand, and walked the show’s engineer through the specifics. As I screwed in the propeller guards, I told him it’d create a lot of noise and wind. So, we’d need plenty of room, and I’d hover it for maybe 20-30 seconds before touching down. I also showed him the drone’s live video feed from a tablet. Could he film this? Yes, I said. Call that my second mistake.

Then came the segment. All was going well: I hovered the drone off the ground and Steve Doocy, one of the anchors, held my tablet for the cameras. Then things started going… not so well. Over the years, I’ve grown accustomed to a first-person flying view. By giving Doocy the tablet, I seriously compromised my flying abilities. After a few seconds of hovering, the drone started drifting toward a camera. I tried to rotate and move away, but instead sent it hurtling out of the studio lights and into the darkness. Not my best moment.

The cruel irony of crashing a drone during a TV segment about drone safety hasn’t escaped me. (Thanks for being kind, Gizmodo and CNET.) What’s worse: The DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ is essentially the same model a government worker crashed on the White House lawn in January. And he was drunk.

Regardless of how you feel toward government regulation of drone use, the reality is that safety is an issue, and we need to talk about it. Should we go on live TV and crash drones while doing so? Of course not.

In hindsight, I would have been wise to practice what I preached and study, for example, the “Know Before You Fly” campaign, which the AMA, AUVSI, Small UAV Coalition, and FAA pulled together last year in anticipation of everyone becoming a drone pilot after Christmas. It’s not the final word on safe drone operation–practice makes perfect–but it’s a good place to start before you even think of picking up a drone, much less fly one in front of millions of viewers.

Motherboard Not Getting Power Or It Won’t Turn On?

Many motherboard issues stem from hardware incompatibility and outdated firmware. Always update your BIOS/UEFI, reset your CMOS battery, and check your PSU power rating against your motherboard and processor power requirements. Taking these steps will resolve many issues that prevent your motherboard from turning on.

The motherboard has several in-built diagnostics systems. One key diagnostics tool is the Power-On Self-Test (POST). In the POST, the motherboard generates a two-digit POST code if there is a hardware issue during the booting process (e.g., a memory-initialization error associated with your storage device or RAM).

You can debug motherboard problems checking the POST code by installing a POST test card into a PCI-e slot or by viewing the hexadecimal display on your motherboard if it has one.

Alternatively, many systems also have a beeping system that performs the same function. Through a series of long and short beeps, you’ll be alerted to the problems that your motherboard is encountering in the boot process. 

For example, two short beeps or the number 26 could indicate that the video card was not read. In such a case, restart the associated component (e.g., the GPU) as a first step to addressing the issue.

Importantly, the POST and beep codes are manufacturer-dependent. Identify the manufacturer of your motherboard and visit their website. On there, you’ll be able to find a copy of your motherboard manual which will provide additional details about POST and beep codes. You can also directly contact your manufacturer to obtain this information.

One major why your motherboard won’t turn on is because of improperly installed components. Visually check your hardware and peripherals to ensure that every device is evenly seated on your motherboard. An improperly seated component can cause the boot process to fail.

The pins and slots of the processor should be lined up with the motherboard and the heatsink of the processor should also be firmly attached. The video card should be evenly seated across the PCI-e slot of the motherboard. In addition, both wings of the RAM slot should snap evenly over each memory stick.  

If you have a faulty or an underpowered PSU, your motherboard won’t be getting any power which can cause your motherboard won’t not to turn on. Check your connections. The motherboard is connected to the PSU via a 20 or 24-pin connector, while the CPU is connected by a 4 or 8-pin connector. Ensure that these connections are clean, tight, and properly seated. 

You can check your manufacturer’s website to verify that your PSU is rated for the power draw of your motherboard and CPU. In addition, to rule out compatibility issues, you can also use a hardware utility to check the power draw of your system against the rating of your PSU. 

The motherboard is a very sensitive hardware component. Even a light touch of your motherboard against your device case can lead to a short circuit. Capacitor blowouts, short circuits, start-up failure, and random crashes are all indicators that your motherboard may be in contact with a metallic surface like your case wall. 

To avoid these issues, ensure that your motherboard is positioned at least a quarter-inch from metallic objects like your computer case. Board standoffs should come with your case or motherboard, or they are readily available online. Also, ensure that no parts of the motherboard are bent towards the case walls and that internal wires are fully shielded by a rubber or plastic coating. 

Sometimes the power light on the motherboard will be on, but you won’t be able to boot your PC. One reason why this might be happening is that the motherboard isn’t receiving a signal from the case to start the boot sequence when you press the power button.

If this occurs, check whether you can boot your PC directly from the motherboard. If your motherboard has an onboard power button, press it to see if your PC turns on. Otherwise, you’ll need to connect the two power switch headers with a metallic object (e.g., the head of a screwdriver). 

If your PC boots, then your motherboard is functioning correctly. Your PC’s start-up issue may reside with the wire connectors to the power switch headers or with the case power button. Check the wires to make sure that they are connected securely and are fully insulated. Also, make sure that the case power button is functioning correctly. Replace any defective parts as needed. 

If your PC does not begin the booting process, then there may be other component failures and connector issues. Continue with the other debugging steps in this article to further isolate the problem.

New hardware is not always backward compatible with older firmware. If you’re trying to install new hardware, one reason why your new motherboard might not be turning on, going through POST, or triggering the booting process is that your BIOS/UEFI version may be outdated. 

You can find the latest version of your firmware from your manufacturer’s website. Download and install this version after reinstalling your old hardware and performing a reboot. Now, reinstall your new hardware. This should resolve your compatibility issues. 

Your CMOS battery is another culprit for motherboard and booting issues. Resetting your CMOS battery will refresh your boot configuration, thereby eliminating configuration issues with new hardware.

To clear the boot settings and reset your boot configuration, firstly remove your CMOS battery for about 30 seconds and reinsert the old battery or replace it with a new one.  

Alternatively, after turning off your PC and disconnecting the power supply, hold the clear/reset button in your case for 5-10 seconds. Reboot your system and enter the BIOS menu to update your settings.

Always contact your device manufacturer if you believe that your motherboard may be defective. The device manufacturer can provide additional debugging steps and/or replace your motherboard if needed.
