How to use a laptop as a monitor

Use your laptop as a monitor with this easy-to-follow guide

If you want to learn how to use a laptop as a monitor, you’re in the right place. The use of an additional monitor is massively handy. Boost your work productivity and minimize the amount of clutter you may have on a single screen – whether that be during work or leisure. If you don’t have the funds to buy a brand-new monitor or upgrade to a higher resolution display, you can make use of a spare laptop.

Likewise, buying a new GPU for your already fully functional gaming PC, as well as purchasing an extra monitor solely for a dual display setup can be hard to justify. Well, fear not, using a laptop as an additional monitor is now easier than ever and we’re going to walk you through exactly how to do it. We’ve put together both a video and written guide to take you through the process.

Connect your laptop to your desktop

If you want to use your laptop as a secondary monitor, we’re going to have to take an alternative route. Don’t worry, though, this method is still extremely simple to complete.

The first method requires using the built-in Windows feature, Miracast. We’re going to use Miracast to transform your laptop into a secondary monitor.

Miracast connectivity issues

BE AWARE – It has been noted that some people have struggled to use the Miracast method as it requires your laptop to have Intel HD graphics. Some people with dedicated graphics cards have not been able to use this feature because of this reason. Furthermore, your desktop PC will need to make use of a wireless connection to connect to the laptop.

We know a lot of gaming PCs make use of an ethernet cable to reduce latency issues. In this case, you will need to purchase a wireless network card or some form of wireless adapter.

Using a Third Party program

A much more tried and tested method, which doesn’t have the same limitations as Windows Miracast, is to use a third-party program such as Space Desk to do your multi-screen bidding.

There are many free virtual KVM programs such as Space Desk, Input Director, Sharemouse, and so on, which will allow you to utilize your laptop as a secondary display. We’re going to touch upon Input Director for now though, as it’s simple, free, and intuitive.

You will need to start by downloading and installing Input Director, from their website, on both laptop and PC. The installation process will give you the option of being the Master or the slave. For our scenario, you will want to install the Master on the Pc and the slave on the laptop. Once this is done, restart both computers and load up the software.

On the laptop, you can configure the properties of the laptop display and change them to become a secondary monitor to the primary, master software. You then need to add the slave IP to the master software by using its network IP, which can be easily found within the Input Director window.

You will see Input director reconfigure your displays and you will now be able to control the laptop via the desktop PC.

Taking a slightly different path, you always have the option to make your laptop the primary device. With this, you will be able to control the desktop PC via the laptop. This, obviously, isn’t using your laptop as a secondary monitor, but it can be useful for people wanting to make use of the PC’s power and so forth.

The great thing about connecting remotely to your desktop from your laptop is that it’s a really simple process that doesn’t require a great amount of technical know-how. You accomplish the task by using a third-party program, of which there are many, such as TeamViewer or Input Director (the one from above).

Let’s look at Teamviewer here though:

Go to the TeamViewer website and download the software on both your laptop and desktop PC

Install the software onto both systems and restart them

Grab the TeamViewer ID from your desktop computer

Open Teamviewer on the laptop and find the Partner ID field

Select this field and copy the desktop TeamViewer IP into this field

It will ask for your desktop’s password at this stage, enter it and hit log on

You are now controlling your main PC from your laptop.

Streaming games to your laptop from your desktop

Long gone are the days of needing a high powered gaming PC to run your favorite Steam games, well, sort of. Let me explain.

Steam has a streaming function (different to Twitch) which allows you to stream your games from a desktop onto a laptop. It’s a great way of being able to use your laptop, or a lesser powerful computer, to play your games on.

Fundamentally, you are streaming a video of your desktop playing your favorite game, on your laptop (I think that makes sense). The only difference is that you are actually controlling the game with the laptop’s keyboard and mouse, and not just watching a video of your desktop.

However, the feature has it’s downsides and latency problems can cause a real issue, especially if you’re playing multiplayer games. I personally think the In-home streaming service, as they like to call it, works great for single-player games though, and this, is how to get it setup:

Open steam on both your desktop PC and your laptop

Where it says play, you will see a drop-down menu, from that menu, select the streaming option

The game will load up using a streaming system where your desktops computational power is used and projected to the laptop

Is a monitor better than a laptop screen?

When comparing a monitor to a laptop screen, the answer isn’t so clear-cut as a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’, as the specifications need to be taken into account first. If you have a specific monitor and laptop screen that you’d like to compare, then we recommend consulting both the laptops manual book/pamphlet, as well as the monitor’s (if it comes with one – if not, its specifications should be listed on the manufacturer’s website). By doing this, you should be able to gain an understanding of which one is best on paper.

However, it’s worth noting that as laptops are often designed to specifically operate on less power than a monitor, they tend to be less bright and vibrant in color when compared to a monitor – which is something to keep in mind when selecting between the two.

Does using a monitor with a laptop increase performance?

There’s quite a common misconception that monitors connected to a laptop can decrease performance, which certainly isn’t the case! So long as your laptop is capable of handling a monitor (which you can double-check by referring to the manual guide) then the monitor won’t affect the performance of your laptop.

For example, having the additional help of an external monitor means that you will be able to multitask and spread your work across two screens, which will help to maximize your workflow and improve productivity. On top of that, the addition of a monitor will allow you to optimize your focus throughout the day, as you’ll be able to keep your important tasks on one screen, and other things such as emails on the other, so the only time you’ll have to break focus is if you get an important notification on the other screen.

I bet, there are times when you just wished your computer to double up as an external screen. Well, that’s not so tough. Setting up your laptop screen as an external monitor just requires a bit of understanding of your connection options, the operating system, and a few adjustments.

Use your laptop screen as an external monitor

If you’re ready to get more out of the Windows PC you already own and save money over buying a dedicated second monitor, this tutorial is for you.

Choose Projecting to This PC.

Choose one of the offered options.

Go to the desktop or laptop you want to use as your main device.

Press Windows Key+P & select how you want the screen to be displayed.

Using your laptop screen as an external monitor is one of the last things buyers consider when they first purchase one. However, it’s good to have it as one of the options.

To get started, open Windows Settings on the laptop that you want to use as the second display.

Here, you’ll be able to pick the options that best suit your situation and security needs. For example, you can choose one of the following options.

Windows PCs and phones can project to this PC when you say it’s OK – Change the setting from Always Off to Available Everywhere or Available Everywhere on Secured Networks depending on your location and network security.

You should now see your laptop device name as an option for connecting. Approve the action and you can start using multiple screens right away.

After you’ve finished your work, hit the Disconnect button to disconnect the connection.

How To Use Your Smartphone As A Second Monitor For Your Linux Desktop

Having a second monitor can be a productivity booster that gives you more screen real estate and a better multitasking experience. Whether you are on the go and can’t carry an actual monitor with you or just want to use your mobile device as a monitor, this guide will help you achieve that.

This tutorial shows you three different methods of using your smartphone and tablet as a second monitor for your Linux desktop.

1. Using Remote Desktop Protocol on Gnome 42

While Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is not a new feature for Linux desktops, Gnome 42 lets you use extendable virtual monitors over an RDP connection. This is by far the easiest and most convenient way to share a virtual monitor on Linux.

Before starting, make sure you are using a distro with Gnome 42, like Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on Wayland (the default display server of Gnome 42).

Enabling Virtual Monitor Feature in Gnome 42

To enable the virtual monitor feature, run the following in your terminal:

Setting Up Remote Desktop From Settings

Go to Settings and select “Sharing.”

On the Remote Desktop app, select the “+” icon and “Add PC.”

In the “PC NAME” field, enter your PC’s IP address and save it. Make sure that all of your devices are connected to the same network.

If you don’t know your PC’s IP address, you can easily it find it by running hostname -I in the terminal.

Select your PC on the Remote Desktop app. It will ask for your username and password. Enter the previously configured username and password and select “Continue.”

Setting Up Your Virtual Monitor Position

You can configure your virtual monitor position just as an actual monitor. From the Settings app, go to “Displays.”

Here you can change your virtual display position relative to your laptop/PC’s display. Also, you can change the orientation of your virtual monitor from the “Orientation” option.

2. Using VirtScreen

VirtScreen is a Linux-exclusive app that can create and share a virtual screen using a VNC server. VirtScreen is currently not supported on the Wayland display server, so make sure you’re using Xorg to run VirtScreen.

Installing VirtScreen

You can download VirtScreen from its GitHub page.

To install the VirtScreen deb package, run:

Replace “path/to/virtscreen.deb” with your actual file path.

Running VirtScreen

Run virtscreen in your terminal to start up VirtScreen.

From the menu bar, select the VirtScreen icon and “Open VirtScreen.”

If selecting “Open VirtScreen” doesn’t open anything because of drive incompatibility, run export MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=i965; in your terminal and run virtscreen again.

On the VirtScreen pop-up window, set your preferred screen resolution for the virtual screen and select “ENABLE VIRTUAL SCREEN.”

On the VNC tab, select “START VNC SERVER.”

Using a VNC Client to Connect to Virtscreen

Now that you have the VNC server running, open a VNC Viewer (or any VNC client of your choice) on your mobile device and select the “+” icon to create a new connection. Enter your displayed IP address and port number and select “CREATE.” (You can leave the name field empty.) For example, I put the address 192.168.0.108:5900 where 192.168.0.108 is my IP address and 5900 is the available port number.

On the next screen, select “Connect” to connect to VirtScreen.

VNC Viewer will show up in the virtual screen on your secondary device.

3. Using Deskreen

Deskreen is a cross-platform app that can share your screen to any device with a web browser.

Installing Deskreen

You can download the Deskreen deb package from its official website.

To install Deskreen, run:

deskreen.deb

Make sure to replace “path/to/deskreen.deb” with your actual file path.

If you want, you can also run Deskreen without installing it by using the Deskreen AppImage file.

Sharing a Single Window With Deskreen

Once you have the Deskreen app installed, open the app and go to the displayed address bar from any web browser.

If Deskreen asks for confirmation, select “Allow” to let Deskreen share the screen with your device.

Select “Application Window” and choose one of the opened windows to share.

Using Deskreen to Share an Extended Display

Deskreen requires a dummy display plug to share your extended display. A dummy display plug is a cheap device that makes your PC think that it is connected to an external display. Alternatively, you can also use VirtScreen to create a virtual screen.

Once you have the dummy plug connected to your PC, go to Settings and select “Displays.” On the Displays page, set the display mode to “Join Displays.” On the Deskreen app, select “Entire Screen” after connecting your secondary device.

As of now, sharing the “Entire Screen” feature needs workarounds to work on Wayland, so make sure you are on Xorg when using this feature.

Drawbacks of Using Deskreen Compared to the Other Two Solutions

Deskreen shares your screen as a video stream so that you can not interact with your PC from your secondary device. You also need to keep the shared window running in the background. Minimizing the window will result in a blank video on your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions Why does an RDP connection not work after a restart?

This a commonly known issue and can be solved by signing out of the current session and signing in again.

How can I change the display server from Xorg to Wayland and vice versa?

If you are using Gnome, you can easily choose which display server to use on the login screen by selecting the setting icon and choosing your preferred display server.

Can I use more than one virtual display in Gnome 42?

While it’s possible to use more than one virtual display, your Linux desktop’s performance might start to suffer once you do so.

Can I play videos on my secondary display?

Whether you are using Deskreen, RDP protocol, or VirtScreen, video playback is good enough and doesn’t look too choppy. Try to use a good 5Ghz network for better playback.

Can I interact with my Linux Desktop from the secondary device?

If you are using an RDP connection on Gnome 42 or VirtScreen, you can interact with your Linux desktop from both of your devices. However, it’s not possible for Deskreen to interact with your desktop from the secondary device, as Deskreen only streams a video of your screen.

How to use a Laptop Lock

As the name suggests, a laptop lock looks like a physical lock that helps in securing your laptop. The laptop lock works similar to the physical lock. For using the laptop lock, you need to insert in the universal slot of the laptop, and it is ready for use. These laptops locks can easily turn your portable laptop into an immovable object thereby securing your laptop from theft.

The laptop lock is not a graceful looking tool but it surely capable of securing your laptop from theft. The working of the laptop lock is very simple. It works same as bicycle chain locks so at one end you have the lock that you have to insert into the laptop while the other end is a long metal chain that you have to wrap around a heavy immovable object. This is to be done because the immovable object acts as an anchor and restricts the portability and movement of your laptop.

Steps to secure your laptop using a laptop lock

The first step in using the laptop lock is by determining whether your laptop is compatible with using such locks. For determining whether or not your laptop is compatible look at the sides or back of your laptop and look for the universal security slot called as USS. This universal security slot is similar to a round hole that looks like a headphone jack. In some laptop models, it is situated on the sides while in some they are placed at the back of the laptop. This laptop lock USS hole is 1/3 inches in size and has a picture of a ‘lock’ carved next to the slot. Nowadays almost all the laptops come with this slot but if you are unsure whether your laptop has this slot or not it is always recommended to contact the manufacturer of your laptop.

Upon buying the laptop lock it’s time to unpack it for use

Remove all the packaging material including the twist tie that is present around the cord

Upon opening, wrap the long metal chain of the laptop lock to a heavy stationary object. Choose the stationary object which is heavy for the thief to lift. Once you have wrapped the metal chain insert the laptop lock through the metal chain to create a loop. This loop secures the laptop even further.

Now push the other end of the metal chain, i.e, the head of the laptop lock into the universal security slot.

While setting up laptop lock if you have a key unlocking system then it is very easy to unlock it but if the laptop lock needs a punching key combination or numerical numbers to unlock it then set the combination that is easy for you to remember and hard for others to guess.

Setting up combination keys before inserting the laptop lock is important as you will not be able to remove this lock until you enter or punch in either the combination key or unlock it with keys.

If the laptop lock is using key then to unlock it you have to insert the key in the lock and twist it around to unlock it, and if the lock uses combination based locking system, then you ha,ve to punch by adjusting each wheel until you enter correct key. Once you enter the correct key, then the lo,ck will allow you to remove the laptop lock from your computer. For combination based locking system the key is usually a combination of four-digit numbers.

Thus in this manner, you can set up the laptop lock onto your laptop and secure it against any sort of theft or misuse. Inserting this lock into the universal security slot of your laptop makes it impossible for the thieves to lift them making it theft-proof. The laptop lock is so secure that it is impossible for the thief to cut it and even breaking the lock is out of the question if the thief wants a working laptop as pulling or breaking the laptop lock will damage the laptop.

A laptop lock is the most secure form of tool used to safeguard portable laptops especially at places offices, coffee shops, cafeteria, restaurants and Wi-Fi areas of hotels. Using a laptop is especially useful when you want to leave your laptop alone for some time in a public place.

Laptop Locks are boon and a very useful tool that you cannot afford not to use – especially if you travel a lot!

Use A Raspberry Pi As A Looping Video Player

If you want a video to loop on a HD screen in your art installation, shop window or on your trade show stand, there is a simple way to do it with a standard Raspberry Pi.

In this article we will show you how you can turn your Raspbery Pi into a looping video player.

Loop the Loop

There was a time when if you wanted a video to loop, you had to make a copy of the video multiple times to fill up whatever playback medium you had, such as a VHS cassette or more recently a DVD or Blu Ray.

But when the loops ran out after about an hour or so, you had to either rewind or press Play again, and that was only if you noticed it. If you were at a trade show and had a video monitor behind you, you might have noticed that the sound stopped. If there was no sound, you had to check every once in a while to see if it was still going.

There has to be a better way of doing it, right? Sure enough there is. Tim Schwartz has built a Video Looper based on a Linux program called Omxplayer. (For more details on OMXplayer and configuring and controlling it, see this link.)

You can set up a Raspberry Pi and an HDMI monitor and put in an SD card, and it’ll play the video over and over until either the power goes off or you stop it.

Getting an image of Video Looper is easy; just go here and get the image. Burn it to an SD card with your favorite SD burner and you’re good to go.

Getting the Videos

1. Boot the Pi with a Raspbian image so what you have is basically a little Linux computer. Then using an SD card adapter and a USB hub, copy the video file or files you want to loop into the target directory.

Videos must be in MP4 format. If you want to get fancy and run DVD or MPEG-2 files directly in the looper, then you will need a license to play them which you can obtain here for a few bucks.

Roll Tape

To start the video lopping, all you have to do is boot the Pi, and the video starts automatically. Hitting Escape on a keyboard (if you have one plugged in) will quit out of the Video Looper and drop you back to the command line.

If you have an original model A or a B, then Video Looper will work perfectly. There have been some reports of problems with Pi2 and A+ and B+. If you have a newer model of Pi, make sure you use an up-to-date Raspbian image or do an update. To do this in a terminal command line on the video looper disk, type

sudo

apt-get update

sudo

apt-get upgrade

and all should be well. And while you are there, you should also expand the root partition to make room for your videos. You may have to modify the startup file at

/

home

/

pi

/

startvideo.sh

to stop the autoboot of the video. Don’t forget to change it back to autobooting before you run your video loop.

Also, some users have reported problems with the video playing once and dropping out. The problem seems to be spaces in the filename of the video. To be sure, take care to not add spaces in your filename or insert “_” instead.

Making the Sound Come Out Elsewhere

It’s possible you might want to make sound come out of something other than the default, e.g. the speakers in your HDMI monitor. If the monitor has a headphone socket, you can run the audio out of that into a device with an amplifier and speakers.

But the best way to do it if you really must is to add a DAC to the system and run the sound out of that. Little USB audio cards like this one are available from many suppliers, but make sure it’s suitable for RasPi before you commit.

Make a Copy

And finally, it goes without saying that if you are running this system in a sales environment where you can’t break off to fix any problems, to make a few duplicates of your SD card once it’s configured and running properly. If for any reason the main card gets corrupted, you can switch it out, turn everything back on and get the video running again.
