An old skit on Saturday Night Live featured a toymaker cheerfully selling dangerous products like “Johnny Switchblade Adventure Punk” (with tiny knives popping out of the doll). Federal regulators have accused the vaping industry of tweaking the tactic, charging that they’re peddling liquid nicotine in packages that resemble kids’ juice boxes, which has led to children chugging the drug.

USA Today recently reported more than 8,200 instances of children under six being exposed to liquid nicotine and e-cigarettes between January 2012 and April of last year. While no deaths have been reported, experts say that downing a small amount of liquid nicotine could cause cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, seizure, or coma.

The government’s shot across the bow is the latest bad PR for the vaping industry. Worried about illegal sales to minors, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had announced a sting operation to catch retailers—from online sellers to gas stations and convenience stores—peddling what has been dubbed the “iPhone of e-cigs,” Juuls, to underage buyers. (Juuls have been brought to school by students nationwide who are lured by their concealability—they emit little flume—and their fruit and other flavoring.)

BU Today asked Siegel to assess the liquid nicotine problem and the government’s action.

BU Today: Presumably, you endorse the government’s order to e-cigarette liquid makers to alter their packaging design?

Siegel: Yes. I can see how a child or a parent could be easily confused. I would fully expect these companies to comply, because failure to comply could mean the removal of their products from the market.

Do you think packaging that looks like kids’ food containers was simply a blunder by the manufacturers or was it more deliberate?

I do not understand how something like this could happen. It seems pretty obvious that the package was specifically designed to look like a children’s fruit juice drink. It was certainly a blunder, but how it could have happened is not clear to me. However, there is no reason for a product with this packaging to be on the market. Why even take a chance?

You’ve objected to an FDA rule that prohibits e-cigarette makers from changing their products without FDA approval. Will that regulation be an obstacle to changing the packaging design?

Strictly speaking, the company cannot change its product design without FDA approval. However, since it is the FDA ordering the change, it essentially has approval. But this demonstrates the problem with the FDA regulations.

Has the FDA rule continued to impede improvements in e-cigarettes, such as preventing their batteries from exploding?

Yes, the FDA rule has impeded improvements, as companies are stuck with the status quo and cannot make improvements unless they submit complex, expensive, and burdensome applications.

NPR reported last month that vaping is a “gateway” to traditional cigarettes and researchers increasingly find the same health detriments from both. Is it time to declare vaping hazardous to your health, and like smoking, try to stamp it out?

I do not believe there is any credible evidence that vaping is a gateway to traditional cigarette smoking. If anything, vaping is an alternative pathway that diverts some youths who would have become smokers. The smoking culture is truly being replaced by a vaping culture, not being rejuvenated by a vaping culture.

I also do not believe that there is evidence showing that the health effects of vaping are the same as those of smoking. I think there is strong evidence that vaping is much safer than smoking and that even if there are effects from long-term vaping, they are certainly less serious than with smoking.

A Flu That’s Infecting Thousands Of Dogs Could Move To Humans Next

The newest outbreak of canine influenza has almost reached epidemic proportions; last month, more than 1,000 dogs in the Chicago area were infected, and cases have popped up in a dozen states around the country. Viruses like the flu often move between animal species, and humans are no exception, especially because we live in such close quarters with our canine companions.

Flu symptoms in dogs are surprisingly similar to those in humans: They have runny noses, coughs, and are lethargic. And like humans, dogs can only transmit the flu to one another. Death from the disease is rare, but in dogs with weakened immune systems–if they’re old or already sick–it can sometimes be fatal. Places where dogs congregate, like dog parks, shelters, or daycare and boarding facilities, become opportunities for the virus to spread to a new host.

Traveling in an infected dog is likely how this particular strain of the flu, called H3N2, came to the U.S. in the first place. “The genetic fingerprint of the virus isolated in Chicago is nearly identical to a virus that was circulating in Korea and other parts of Asia,” says Edward Dubovi, a professor of virology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. His guess is that a dog sick with the flu was brought into the country. Though border patrol often requires some paperwork to show that animals have received the proper vaccinations, these mostly pertain to animals used in agriculture, not companion animals like dogs and cats. “Individuals from state to state who deal with companion animals admit that there is a highly porous border; companion animals are fairly unregulated and ignored to a certain extent,” Dubovi says.

Before it moved to dogs, H3N2 was only found in birds. Viruses are amazingly plastic, Dubovi says, and able to infect different species, because the virus is constantly mutating and changing. Eventually, one of these mutated versions found its way to a dog and, against sizable odds, was able to infect it. This frequent mutation is part of the reason you have to get a new flu shot ever year; the virus changes so quickly that sometimes we have trouble mounting our defenses to keep up with it.

Frequent mutation is part of the reason the virus could also move to humans. A dog living in close quarters with his owner might have just the one strain of the mutated virus that could take hold in humans. But the flu has another scary quality that may help it make the jump: The flu not only mutates, but can jumble up the order of its genes, like a game of genetic Boggle. “So, hypothetically, you could have a dog with H3N2 [a different strain of canine flu], and the owner of that dog could have H1N1 [which started in swine]. If the owner sneezes on the dog, then the dog could get a dual infection, and out of that could come something truly nasty,” Dubovi says.

It’s not really likely that this flu strain will make the leap to humans, Dubovi emphasizes. But it could happen. “It’s like buying a lottery ticket. It’s a theoretical possibility, and there’s no way of predicting. The influenza virus has the ability to produce tremendous surprises.”

Dog owners are already taking the right steps to slow the outbreak of canine flu: keeping them away from places where dogs congregate, at least for a short while. With any luck, this strain might even disappear, Dubovi says.

Children Have To Grow Up Too Fast

She waltzes into my room on winged feet — all 3 feet and abit of her, with a pixie cut and huge brown eyes. She is Katy(not her real name), and she is in the first grade. As everyoneelse settles down, Katy twirls in a dizzying display of excessenergy. She is wearing her favorite outfit — a rainbow ponchoand a tiara with pink feathers. The rest of the class sitson the rug, crisscross applesauce. They stare up at me expectantly. Katyis trying to lie across my lap and peer up into my face. She slithers down,bounces up again, and moves to her desk to see what treasures might be inher backpack. Her bottom has never touched her chair. I invite her back tothe group and sit her right next to me — her favorite place in the room.

A little young, I tell myself on the first day. Not ready for first grade andthe rigors of state standards. I’m new to the school so I do not know herhistory. Perhaps she’s just young for her age. I can’t help thinking someonedropped the ball here. She’s a kindergartner dressed in first-grade clothing.

When I check her file in the office, I am dumbfounded by an inch-thickIEP folder. This is not good news. An Individualized Education Programusually signals some serious area of concern. The plan spells out goals forthe student and how the teacher will monitor and assess the accomplishmentof those goals. Benchmarks are set. Meetings are held. I’ve neverhad a first grader with an IEP. Most students come equipped with a slimfolder holding their vaccination records and birth certificate. What couldpossibly be wrong with this girl that warrants this level of scrutiny?

The answer: nothing. She has an older brother with a learning disabilityand anxious parents who want to make sure Katy doesn’t “fallthrough the cracks.” I keep reading, looking for a diagnosis, some indicationthat there is something wrong with this sprite. But the only thingI see is that she “doesn’t know her entire alphabet.” She can’t write allher numbers to thirty. She’s “inattentive” during instruction.

There is nothing wrong with Katy except that she is a kindergartnerdeprived of kindergarten. Ten years ago she would have been in thedress-up corner in front of the mirror, draping feather boas across herthin shoulders. But on this particular day, she’s a first grader with anIEP and goals that are unattainable for someone at her stage of chúng tôi will go to special classes three times a week to make up forher “deficits.” She will continue to smile boldly, but soon she will startto wonder what is wrong with her. She will leave our classroom threetimes a week and trudge, not dance,down to room 15. She will start tofeel the weight of those goals. Thebenchmarks will pinch just a bit.

There is no kindergarten. It has gone the way of the little red wagon andmud pies. The time when children learned how to go to school, how to usea tricycle, or wait their turn on the swing is gone. These were importantskills — vital to success in the grades to come. We do not have time to teachthem now. We have worksheets that need completing. We have take-homebooks to copy and homework packets to staple. We have accountability.

I look down at Katy while she copies the words from the whiteboard.Every now and then, she holds up her paper for me to see, and smiles. Ilove how the light dances off the rhinestones on her tiara. And I wonderhow long it will be before someone tells her that she can’t wear hats inclass and she can’t dance in the hallways. I will miss the pink feathers andrainbow poncho. But while she is mine, I willdance around the rules just a little and find placesfor her to stand, not sit. I will teach her whatI can to the best of my ability. I will hold off, aslong as I can, the weight of the file that dogs herfootsteps. And I’ll look for a rainbow ponchoof my own to remind me that the Katys of thisworld just might be on the brink of extinction.

Windows offers a similar experience with Cortana search. All you need to do is invoke it by with Win + Q keyboard shortcut and start searching.

One small drawback of this is that it also displays search results from Bing. There is an equally good alternative–Wox. Once installed you can configure it to launch when you hit the space bar. It will pop up a search box where you can type to find what you want to see on Windows.

The best part of Wox is that its open source supports plugins, you can customize hotkeys, disable it on full screen, execute command line tools, search within the Control Panel, and it replaces your run prompt.

5] WinLaunch

If you want to have macOS like launcher on Windows 10, you need to try WinLaunch. You can add programs, files, URLs to it. To launch all you need to do is hit SHIFT + TAB, and it will reveal the blurred background with the list of apps you added to the launcher.

As you can see here, we aren’t trying to convert your Windows completely into Mac. Instead, we are trying to bring only some useful features.

This morning a variety of sources revealed information on the 2023 Samsung Galaxy phone with a foldable display. This device is said to join the Samsung Galaxy S10 in an onslaught of feature-heavy smartphones that’ll take on Apple’s “X” line of iPhone devices. The Samsung Galaxy phone with codename “Winner” will be the most unique, coming with two displays – one on the outside for small tasks, one on the inside that’ll fold right down its middle.

What good is a fold-friendly display in a smartphone? You might not be able to fathom its worth until you’ve got one in your hands. Surely it’d be better to just have three displays, one on the outside, two on the inside, a hinge between the two? Apparently not – since Samsung did that already in China and South Korea with devices that’ve done OK, but certainly not well enough to consider a worldwide launch.

We, as smartphone-toting society, seem to be over the whole “flip phone” phase we were in just before 2007. But we might’ve come back around. Xiaomi just released a sliding-backed smartphone, after all. It’s like LG’s Chocolate phone, but much, much larger.

Today Bloomberg revealed a number of details on the Samsung Galaxy folding display-toting phone. Below you’ll see all the details in list form. All of these details come from anonymous sources, and we have no reason to suspect any of them are less than on-the-level.

The way Bloomberg described the display’s shatter potential, you’d think there’s no way the folding bit would work. If you take a peek at Samsung’s previous demonstrations of folding displays, your mind might well be put at ease. They’ve been working on this tech for years.

Bloomberg suggested that Samsung was still deciding between two different versions of the Galaxy foldable display phone. They suggested that both devices “open from side and side,” which we can assume means they open like a book. They said that the two versions Samsung’s deciding between open longer horizontally or vertically – so they’re like a wide book or a skinny book.

It’s like the phones will open up to be a pamphlet or a children’s book. Or like a vertically-oriented tablet or a horizontally-oriented tablet. It should be pretty obvious at this point that we won’t get a final product by the end of 2023 – but we may well see what they’ve got in the works at SDC 2023.

Word today says the Samsung Developer Conference 2023 will play host to a number of images of both the hardware and the software for this folding-screen smartphone.
