How To Find Your Airpods & Their Case

AirPods are little things. If your AirPod(s) have gone missing, Apple’s Find My can be incredibly useful for helping you find them. In order to make use of this feature, you will have had to have enabled Find My iPhone (or iPad) before the AirPod(s) disappeared.

For AirPods connection issues, see:

Use Find My

Find My AirPods is automatically set up when you set up Find My for your iPhone, iPad or iPod. Find My can help you find your AirPods when they are out of their case and somewhere close by. Using the map can help you know if they are nearby. Once you are close to their location, you can use Play a Sound to locate them.

Your AirPods on a Map

In order to see your AirPods on a map, you can either go to chúng tôi or use the Find My app on your device. Find My will show you the location of your devices and AirPods. If your AirPods are no longer connected, such as when they have run out of charge, Find My will show you the last location of your AirPods before they went offline.

A few things to keep in mind when using Find My maps to find your lost AirPods:

Because they rely on GPS, there is definitely some inaccuracy. So, for example, if your AirPods appear to be in your neighbor’s backyard, they may really be in your house somewhere. In the image above, all my devices are on my desk, however it looks as though my iPad and Mac are out in the backyard.

If your AirPods have gone offline (run out of charge), they may not be at the location you see on the map. That will just be their last known location.

Using Find My app

On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you can also use Find My to see the last location of your AirPods.

Open the Find My app.

Select the Devices tab.

Note that if your AirPods are separated, you will only see one at a time on the map. To find both:

Find the AirPod that is showing a location on the map.

Put that AirPod in its case.

Refresh the Find My map. The other AirPod’s location will show on the map.

Play a Sound

In order for this to work, your AirPods should be close enough to your Apple device and connected to Bluetooth. You can use either chúng tôi or the Find My app to get them to play a sound to help you locate them. The sound will get gradually louder over a 2 minute time period.

If your AirPods are Offline

In order to make use of Find My, you have to have enabled it before your AirPods became lost.

If your AirPods are currently offline, you may be able to see their last know location.

If your AirPods come back online, you will get a notification on the iDevice you have paired with them. I suppose this knowledge may be most useful for those who do find a stray AirPod and can charge it for the poor person who has lost track of it.

Still Can’t Find your AirPods or their Case?

As of right now, there is no way to track the AirPods’ case using Find My. So if your AirPods are in their case, or if it is the case itself that has gone missing, Find My can’t help you directly, it can only help you learn the last location of the AirPods (before they went into their case.)

How to Find your Case

If you are looking for a way to keep track of your case (maybe in the future), you can use a device like Tile. Tile is a small, thin, square-shaped device that you can use to keep track of keys, pets, wallets and many other things you might misplace. Tile comes with its own adhesive that you could use to affix it to the AirPods’ case. The Tile device connects to your iPhone and you can locate your Tile – and the item it’s attached to- through the Tile app.

Order Replacement

Unfortunately, sometimes you won’t be able to locate your stray AirPod(s) or their charging case. In this instance, you can order a replacement.

Find the serial number for your AirPods/Case.

Contact Apple Support to order a replacement.

See our article, What does AppleCare+ for AirPods Cover? Is it Worth it?, for a discussion about AppleCare+ for AirPods.

Also, there is no way to lock AirPods the way that you can lock your iPhone if it gets lost or stolen. Unfortunately, if someone else finds your AirPods, they only need to reset them in order to pair them to their iDevices.

Find Your Lost Android Phones With Device Manager

Almost since the smartphone became the carry-around device of choice, developers have scrambled to find a way to help users locate misplaced handsets. While many good ones have come to market, Google has now decided to release its own solution to help you find lost Android phones, and tablets as well.

Simply having the search giant and Android maker jump into the market certainly is capable cutting into the business developers such as Seek Droid, Find My Droid and others. So, what is Google offering and can it compete with those existing apps in the market?

No Mobile App Required

Yes, you read that correctly – you do not need to install any software on your device. Every Android device requires that you activate using your Google account. The company, therefore, already knows what you have. There are exceptions to this – for instance, the service does not work with my Kindle Fire HD. This is because Amazon’s tablets run a highly specialized version of Android, and setup requires your Amazon account information, not Google’s.

The search giant also runs what is arguably the besting mapping system in the world. Combining these two factors makes Google uniquely qualified to handle the task, perhaps better than any other company.

How It All Works

Google has set up a special Device Manager web site to make all of this work. When you arrive on the site, you will be greeted with a large full-screen Google Map (in my case North America). It will then attempt to locate your device and pinpoint it on the map. This all takes place surprisingly quickly.

As the map zooms all the way in, it will pinpoint your location or, rather, the location of your device. This has been surprisingly accurate in all of my tests.

Once you are pinpointed on the map, the boxes on the left will populate with more detailed information. In the upper box, you will find a drop-down list of all of your devices, with an option to the right to rename a particular phone or tablet. This is followed by the name of your location (nearest town) and a message telling you that Google feels it has you within 25 meters. That last bit changes, though I have never seen it exceed 100 meters.

Finally, at the bottom, there are two buttons – the left is designed to “ring” (yes this works for tablets also) your chosen device. The right one is labeled “erase device”, but is greyed out. This is because I have not enabled “factory reset” on my devices. The lower box explains this and gives the option to  send the enable option to the phone or tablet.

Conclusion

This is by far the simplest solution for lost and stolen devices, and its all free and easy to use, no matter how many devices you own. No mobile app to install, incredible accuracy and, given that it’s Android, Google is far less likely to suddenly decide to kill it off, as they have done with so many other seemingly good ideas like Reader.

5 Tips To Customise And Enhance Your Airpods Max Experience

Apple’s expensive new AirPods Max headphones have been out for a while now, which means a lot of you guys must be using them already. The AirPods Max offer impressive features including pretty great noise cancellation, incredible sound, along with all the usual features that AirPods offer in general. However, if you want to use them even better, check out these 5 tips to customise and enhance your AirPods Max experience.

5 AirPods Max Tips to Customise and Enhance Your Experience (January 2023)

Most of the time, the usual settings on your AirPods Max will suit you just fine. However, there are things that you can change here, and some of these have proved really useful to me.

I will be discussing 5 AirPods Max tips here with you guys to help you get the most out of your headphones as well. You can use the table of contents below to skip over to a specific tip as well.

1. Customise Digital Crown Direction for Volume Control

One thing that was immediately unintuitive to me after I got the AirPods Max was the digital crown. It’s great, but the direction of its rotation to increase volume felt reversed to me. If you’re in the same boat, you can customise the direction you need to rotate the digital crown in to increase or decrease the volume.

Tap on the ‘i’ icon next to AirPods Max.

Tap on ‘Digital Crown’ and change the direction from “Back to Front” to “Front to Back”

2. Disable Automatic Head Detection

This one is actually something I didn’t change yet, but I definitely will once offices re-open and I need to talk with people while listening to music. Basically, the AirPods Max have head detection, which means the music automatically pauses if you remove them from your head, or even remove one earcup to the side.

That’s actually a really useful feature, but if you often talk to people by removing one earcup off your ears, this feature will constantly pause your music. Fortunately, you can disable it as well.

Tap on the ‘i’ icon next to AirPods Max.

Disable the toggle next to ‘Automatic Head Detection’

3. Customise What the Noise Cancellation Button Does

By default, the noise cancellation button on the AirPods Max switches between Transparency mode and noise cancellation. However, you can change what the button does pretty easily if you like.

Tap on the ‘i’ icon next to AirPods Max.

So you can use the button to simply turn ANC on and off, or cycle between ANC on, ANC off, and transparency, or just turning transparency on/off.

4. Disable Automatic Switching

Automatic switching is a feature I use all the time with my iPhone and Mac. However, a lot of people have reported that the feature keeps switching devices when it’s not needed, which can be annoying.

If you also have the same issue, you can easily disable automatic switching for your AirPods Max so they won’t automatically connect to your other Apple devices.

Tap on the ‘i’ icon next to AirPods Max.

Tap on ‘Connect to this iPhone’ and change the selection to “When Last Connected to This iPhone”.

5. Reset AirPods Max

Lastly, you should know how to reset your AirPods Max if needed. In my case, for some reason the AirPods Max would connect to my iPhone and Mac, but never with my iPad. That was really annoying, and if you have similar issues, resetting might solve them.

On your AirPods Max, press and hold the Noise Cancellation button and Digital Crown at the same time. Keep them pressed until the LED light on the bottom of the right earcup blinks amber.

Get a Customised Experience with These AirPods Max Tips

The AirPods Max are really good headphones and they come with a bunch of useful features. However, some times those features may not work in the way you want, or you could just want some control over them. Hopefully, these 5 tips for AirPods Max have helped you fine tune your experience with your new headphones.

How do you connect AirPods to a Chromebook? Read this quick guide for everything you need to know

Need to know how to connect AirPods to Chromebook? There’s nothing better than a quick and easy guide to explain all the details and set you on your way as soon as possible. We’ll walk you through everything you need to know, with the choice of a video demonstration or an easy to follow step-by-step guide.

Chromebooks are great lightweight laptops for those working with a limited budget, and you’ll be pleased to know that they aren’t lacking in compatibility for external devices such as AirPods, much in the same vain as other laptops.

Can I connect AirPods to my Chromebook? Chromebook compatibility explained

AirPods connect to laptops and other devices via Bluetooth, so as long as your Chromebook has an operational Bluetooth connection, you should be able to connect the two with no problem.

However, be aware that you won’t get the same functionality out of your AirPods with a Chromebook as you would if you connected them to an Apple device such as a MacBook, iPad, iPhone, or other iOS product. For instance, you won’t be able to use Siri, or additional features like Spatial Audio / Dolby Atmos, or AirPod battery detection. Compared to connecting AirPods to an iPhone, the pairing of the devices will be slower, possibly less stable (more liable to connection failures), and also drain the battery life of your AirPods quicker.

How do you connect AirPods to a Chromebook?

Step

1

Put the AirPods inside the charging case

Before beginning with the connecting process, put the AirPods inside their charging case and close the lid.

You need to make sure that the AirPods are sufficiently charged up before continuing: at least 25% battery life is the recommended minimum, but the more charged the better.

Step

2

Press the Setup Button

Once the AirPods battery is sufficiently charged, open the case again.

Next, press the circular Setup Button on the back of the AirPods case (as pictured) until the light flashes. Newer AirPods and the AirPod Pro typically have this light located on the outside, whereas older models may have it on the inside.

Step

3

Ensure Bluetooth is switched on

You should see a Bluetooth icon within the menu (as pictured). Make sure this is switched to On using the small drop-down menu beneath the icon.

Step

4

Scan for Bluetooth devices

If the AirPods don’t appear, make sure that the Setup light from Step 2 is still displaying, if not, press the Setup button again.

Step

5

Connect the AirPods to your Chromebook

Select AirPods from the list under the Unpaired devices section, and select Pair.

The process should now be complete! Test your AirPods to make sure they work.

Connect Airpods to Chromebook: Troubleshooting

If the AirPods aren’t appearing under Unpaired devices or if they simply won’t connect after you press Pair, try all of the following:

Check that your AirPods are fully charged and that the Setup Button is still activated.

Try moving your AirPods to different positions around the Chromebook and trying again.

Attempt to connect a different device via Bluetooth to your Chromebook to make sure there is not an issue with the Chromebook’s Bluetooth signal.

If all else fails, check out the Apple support page for more info.
