“What I’m doing with my own team now is to stop thinking about SEO and think about CEA and that’s content experience analyst. And think about the content that I need to meet me at every stage of the journey. Stop thinking about search – if it ranks, if it does all of this kind of thing… It’s hard to map that customer journey but just stop thinking about in search that I have to write compelling headlines and text has to be this. Think creatively. You normally talk about engagement in SEO and how important it is.”
“SEO pioneer, author, world-traveler and keynote speaker, Champagne connoisseur and consummate drinking partner to the global digital marketing community…”
This is how Mike Grehan describes himself in his bio, but there’s so much about Mike that more aspiring – and even seasoned – digital marketers need to know.
He has been online for 25 years and a pioneer in SEO, “the most modern industry in the world,” but Mike says he doesn’t know “if modern industry and quarter of century actually go together in the same sentence.”
A self-confessed futurist, Mike is good at knowing what’s coming next. He’s been writing about search, machine learning, and AI as early as 2005.
“Forecasting… I can look at what’s happening in research work and the scientific field, and then think how long will it take before it actually happens, before it becomes a thing.”
Through all of these roles he’s taken on, he has touched the lives of thousands of other marketers in this industry – including mine.
So in today’s edition of The Search Engine Journal Show, I talk to Mike Grehan – an SEO pro you should get to know better.About Mike Grehan

Marketplace and This American Life retracted their stories based on the work of Mike Daisey due to further reporting and supplemental accounts from his translator. Daisey’s one-man show relived a trip to Foxconn where he claimed, among other things, to have met “14 year olds, 13 year olds, even 12 year olds” who toiled in Apple’s sweatshops for multiple shifts at a time. He also met people deformed from working on Apple products.
Marketplace’s Rob Schmitz, who covers Asia for the news organization, did not believe what he heard—that Daisey was able to find all of this on his first six-day trip to China. He looked for Daisey’s translator, but Daisey conveniently lost the contact information. When he found Cathy Lee (above), she had no knowledge about most of the information Daisey used in his monologue.
It appears that much of Daisey’s show is fabricated from news events and stories that Apple and Foxconn already documented. To their credit, NPR got to the bottom of the story. Here is the transcript of the radio interview on This American Life:
Rob Schmitz: Cathy says you did not talk to workers who were poisoned with hexane.
Mike Daisey: That’s correct.
RS: So you lied about that? That wasn’t what you saw?
MD: I wouldn’t express it that way.
RS: How would you express it?
MD: I would say that I wanted to tell a story that captured the totality of my trip.
Ira Glass: Did you meet workers like that? Or did you just read about the issue?
MD: I met workers in, um, Hong Kong, going to Apple protests who had not been poisoned by hexane but had known people who had been, and it was a constant conversation among those workers.
IG: So you didn’t meet an actual worker who’d been poisoned by hexane.
MD: That’s correct.
Daisey was quick to respond on his blog, where he wrote:
“This American Life” has raised questions about the adaptation of AGONY/ECSTASY we created for their program. Here is my response:
I stand by my work. My show is a theatrical piece whose goal is to create a human connection between our gorgeous devices and the brutal circumstances from which they emerge. It uses a combination of fact, memoir, and dramatic license to tell its story, and I believe it does so with integrity. Certainly, the comprehensive investigations undertaken by The New York Times and a number of labor rights groups to document conditions in electronics manufacturing would seem to bear this out.
What I do is not journalism. The tools of the theater are not the same as the tools of journalism. For this reason, I regret that I allowed THIS AMERICAN LIFE to air an excerpt from my monologue. THIS AMERICAN LIFE is essentially a journalistic - not a theatrical - enterprise, and as such it operates under a different set of rules and expectations. But this is my only regret. I am proud that my work seems to have sparked a growing storm of attention and concern over the often appalling conditions under which many of the high-tech products we love so much are assembled in China.

Note: The neural network was able to approximate XNOR function with activation function ReLu.
If ReLU activation is replaced by linear activation, the neural network loses its power to approximate non-linear function.
8) Suppose we have a 5-layer neural network which takes 3 hours to train on a GPU with 4GB VRAM. At test time, it takes 2 seconds for single data point.
Now we change the architecture such that we add dropout after 2nd and 4th layer with rates 0.2 and 0.3 respectively.
What would be the testing time for this new architecture?

18) Sigmoid was the most commonly used activation function in neural network, until an issue was identified. The issue is that when the gradients are too large in positive or negative direction, the resulting gradients coming out of the activation function get squashed. This is called saturation of the neuron.
That is why ReLU function was proposed, which kept the gradients same as before in the positive direction.
A ReLU unit in neural network never gets saturated.
ReLU can get saturated too. This can be on the negative side of x-axis.
19) What is the relationship between dropout rate and regularization?
Note: we have defined dropout rate as the probability of keeping a neuron active?
A) Higher the dropout rate, higher is the regularization
B) Higher the dropout rate, lower is the regularization
Higher dropout rate says that more neurons are active. So there would be less regularization.
20) What is the technical difference between vanilla backpropagation algorithm and backpropagation through time (BPTT) algorithm?
A) Unlike backprop, in BPTT we sum up gradients for corresponding weight for each time step
B) Unlike backprop, in BPTT we subtract gradients for corresponding weight for each time step
BPTT is used in context of recurrent neural networks. It works by summing up gradients for each time step
21) Exploding gradient problem is an issue in training deep networks where the gradient getS so large that the loss goes to an infinitely high value and then explodes.
What is the probable approach when dealing with “Exploding Gradient” problem in RNNs?

Dropconnect randomly masks both input and output weights to a neuron
A) 1 is True and 2 is False
B) 1 is False and 2 is True
C) Both 1 and 2 are True
D) Both 1 and 2 are False
In dropout, neurons are dropped; whereas in dropconnect; connections are dropped. So both input and output weights will be rendered in useless, i.e. both will be dropped for a neuron. Whereas in dropconnect, only one of them should be dropped
26) While training a neural network for image recognition task, we plot the graph of training error and validation error for debugging.

B) Parallelization of neural network is best when the memory is used optimally
C) Losses are erratic when you don’t use an even number
D) None of these
30) Xavier initialization is most commonly used to initialize the weights of a neural network. Below is given the formula for initialization.
If weights at the start are small, then signals reaching the end will be too tiny.
If weights at the start are too large, signals reaching the end will be too large.
Weights from Xavier’s init are drawn from the Gaussian distribution.
Xavier’s init helps reduce vanishing gradient problem.

Along with having the knowledge of how to apply deep learning algorithms, you should also know the implementation details. Therefore you should know that all the above mentioned problems are a bottleneck for deep learning algorithm.
34) Dropout is a regularization technique used especially in the context of deep learning. It works as following, in one iteration we first randomly choose neurons in the layers and masks them. Then this network is trained and optimized in the same iteration. In the next iteration, another set of randomly chosen neurons are selected and masked and the training continues.
A) Affine layer
B) Convolutional layer
C) RNN layer
D) None of these
Dropout does not work well with recurrent layer. You would have to modify dropout technique a bit to get good results.

What is Data?
Data is a raw and unorganized fact that required to be processed to make it meaningful. Data can be simple at the same time unorganized unless it is organized. Generally, data comprises facts, observations, perceptions numbers, characters, symbols, image, etc.
Data is always interpreted, by a human or machine, to derive meaning. So, data is meaningless. Data contains numbers, statements, and characters in a raw form. What is Information?
Information is a set of data which is processed in a meaningful way according to the given requirement. Information is processed, structured, or presented in a given context to make it meaningful and useful.
It is processed data which includes data that possess context, relevance, and purpose. It also involves manipulation of raw data.
Information assigns meaning and improves the reliability of the data. It helps to ensure undesirability and reduces uncertainty. So, when the data is transformed into information, it never has any useless details.KEY DIFFERENCE
Data is a raw and unorganized fact that is required to be processed to make it meaningful whereas Information is a set of data that is processed in a meaningful way according to the given requirement.
Data does not have any specific purpose whereas Information carries a meaning that has been assigned by interpreting data.
Data alone has no significance while Information is significant by itself.
Data never depends on Information while Information is dependent on Data.
Data measured in bits and bytes, on the other hand, Information is measured in meaningful units like time, quantity, etc.
Data can be structured, tabular data, graph, data tree whereas Information is language, ideas, and thoughts based on the given data.Data Vs. Information
Parameters Data Information
Description Qualitative Or QuantitativeVariables which helps to develop ideas or conclusions. It is a group of data which carries news and meaning.
Etymology Data comes from a Latin word, datum, which means “To give something.” Over a time “data” has become the plural of datum. Information word has old French and middle English origins. It has referred to the “act of informing.”. It is mostly used for education or other known communication.
Format Data is in the form of numbers, letters, or a set of characters. Ideas and inferences
Represented in It can be structured, tabular data, graph, data tree, etc. Language, ideas, andthoughts based on the given data.
Meaning Data does not have any specific purpose. It carries meaning that has been assigned by interpreting data.
Interrelation Information that is collected Information that is processed.
Feature Data is a single unit and is raw. It alone doesn’t have any meaning. Information is the product and group of data which jointly carry a logical meaning.
Dependence It never depends on Information It depended on Data.
Measuring unit Measured in bits and bytes. Measured in meaningful units like time, quantity, etc.
Support for Decision making It can’t be used for decision making It is widely used for decision making.
Contains Unprocessed raw factors Processed in a meaningful way
Knowledge level It is low-level knowledge. It is the second level of knowledge.
Characteristic Data is the property of an organization and is not available for sale to the public. Information is available for sale to the public.
Dependency Data depends upon the sources for collecting data. Information depends upon data.
Example Ticket sales on a band on tour. Sales report by region and venue. It gives information which venue is profitable for that business.
Significance Data alone has no signifiance. Information is significant by itself.
Meaning Data is based on records and observations and, which are stored in computers or remembered by a person. Information is considered more reliable than data. It helps the researcher to conduct a proper analysis.
Usefulness The data collected by the researcher, may or may not be useful. Information is useful and valuable as it is readily available to the researcher for use.
Dependency Data is never designed to the specific need of the user. Information is always specific to the requirements and expectations because all the irrelevant facts and figures are removed, during the transformation process.DIKW (Data Information Knowledge Wisdom)
DIKW is the model used for discussion of data, information, knowledge, wisdom and their interrelationships. It represents structural or functional relationships between data, information, knowledge, and wisdom.
Google announced they are rolling out a mortgage information search product. The new service will show in mobile searches.Google Mortgage Information Search for Mobile
Google’s new service is a collaboration with Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).
The CFPB is a United States government organization that regulates the consumer financial products and services.
The new mortgage search tool is available in mobile.
According to the CFPBs About Us page:
with the information, steps, and tools that they need to make smart financial decisions.”
Google is partnering with the U.S. government to provide information that is meant to benefit consumers.Google Mortgage Information Search
The tool has a tabbed interface. It currently only shows in mobile devices. General mortgage related keywords trigger the new mortgage search engine results page.
The new search feature can be seen as a way to funnel users from high level mortgage related search queries to more specific information, but not necessarily to more specific websites.Screenshot of Tabbed Interface of Google’s Mortgage Information Search Four Ads Above Mortgage Tools

Then that’s followed by FAQs that have no links to the website of origin.Did Google “Borrow” Content Without Attribution?
One of the FAQs has content that appears to have been sourced from chúng tôi But there is no link to the source of the information or any other attribution.
It’s possible that BankRate is not the original source of that content. But a search for a snippet of that phrase shows BankRate as the likeliest source. One Section from Google’s Mortgage Search FAQ: Screenshot from a chúng tôi Page:
The page is visible here. How does Google’s Mortgage Search Work?
Google’s new mortgage information search provides multiple choices for finding more information about mortgages.
The information is designed to funnel consumers from every point of their mortgage research journey.
According to Google:
list of relevant documents and helpful tips from the CFPB. “What is Google Mortgage Information Search?
The mortgage information search offers the following tools:
Mortgage rate tool
Step by step mortgage tool
Videos with How-to and 101 level informationMortgage Calculator Keyword
The mortgage calculator keyword phrase drives traffic to Google’s information search tool.
While Google previously had featured their own calculator, this change may represent a greater disruption in the mortgage calculator search engine results pages (SERPs).
The new mortgage information feature pushes organic listings further down the page.Mortgage Related Videos
The mortgage related videos seem to be focused on how-to and beginner level information. Those seeking to gain traffic via videos may do well to focus on that kind of video.Disruption in Mobile Mortgage SERPs
This may cause disruption in the mobile SERPs for mortgage related keywords. This does not currently affect the desktop SERPs.
The disruption appears to be on general high level type keywords.
A search for Mortgage Rates will trigger the tool. A search Mortgage Rates Massachusetts will also trigger the tool.
But more granular searches like Mortgage Rates Northampton Massachusetts or Mortgage Rates Charlotte North Carolina do not trigger Google’s mortgage information search tool.
So it looks like local related and granular keywords will not trigger the tool.
Those seeking to pick up mortgage related traffic may want to consider pivoting to more granular keyword phrases. What’s Next from Google?
Does this tool signal the future of Google search?
It’s possible that something like this might pop up in other finance and Your Money or Your Life related topics, where a complicated topic needs a more comprehensive approach.Citations
