Suggested January 2024 New Publics – Contemporary Architecture & The Public Sphere In Turkey
The rapidly expanding urban context and real estate development activities in Turkey in the 21st century generated a series of important public buildings for culture, education, sports, and public space with distinctive and exemplary architecture. This architecture is the focus of an exhibition entitled “New Publics: Contemporary Architecture and the Public Sphere in Turkey” to take place at the Arch Moscow 2023 XXIV International Exhibition of Architecture and Design to be held from 15 to 19 of May 2023 at the exhibition hall “Manege” in Moscow.
The exhibition features a selection of 15 architectural works completed in the last 10 years by leading Turkish architecture practices that focus on “New Public” spaces created within the context of hybrid building programs such as cultural centers, libraries, educational institutions, sports facilities, museums, and outdoor public spaces. Organized by Istanbul-based GAD Foundation led by Gokhan Avcioglu and Moscow architecture practice SPEECH led by Sergei Tchoban and co-curated by architecture critic Gokhan Karakus and Anna Martovitskaya – chief editor of speech: magazine, the exhibition aims to expand the notion of public architecture as civic-minded and spatially inventive design.
Architectural strategies in Turkey spurred on by the need to accommodate newly expanding cities and societies with sustainable economic and ecological models will be shown in this exhibition that will also feature digital and virtual projects showing these new publics on the internet and new media.
speech: the architectural magazine was established in Moscow in 2008 by architects Sergei Tchoban and Sergei Kuznetsov. It is released twice a year in Russian and English and distributed in Europe and the USA by JOVIS. Editor in chief Anna Martovitskaya is responsible for publishing the magazine in coordination with an editorial board that also organizes lectures, new public talks, and curates international exhibitions. Each issue of speech: is entirely devoted to a single theme that is explored in a comprehensive manner from the point of view of both Russian and global architectural practice.

Enterprise Architecture Is Dead — Long Live Enterprise Architecture
A recent column by Chris Pickering suggested that Enterprise Architecture (EA) be allowed to rest in peace — or die as a concept or approach. His premise is that it either is no longer, or possibly never was, a valid approach to anything.
While many an EA effort failed to provide expected value, this is the case of most transformation approaches when they were applied improperly — including business process reengineering and “big bang” ERP.
Clearly Mr. Pickering brings a valuable perspective to us with his experiences of EA — and he is correct that all change initiatives must provide near-term value to be sustainable. This is one of the reasons why Six Sigma is popular; it provides rapid and quantitative value.
Many, however, fail to understand EA. To understand EA, one must understand the roots of EA — IBM’s Business Systems Planning methodology (BSP), the precursor to most IT strategic planning approaches.
After the publishing of BSP, John Zachman produced a paper in the IBM Systems Journal titled “A Framework for IT Architecture,” which included a 3-by-6 matrix of perspectives and interrogatories. This matrix was intended to describe the notion that different stakeholders within an organization care about different things even though they all work for the same organization, a notion now embodied in the IEEE 1471-2000 standard, which is gaining much acceptance in the IT community.
Zachman’s matrix, intentionally called a “Framework for IT Architecture,” was intended to graphically represent how many of the artifacts or models of BSP linked together to bring about alignment between strategic intent and operational reality. It was called a “Framework” because it was intended to be a frame of reference or a structure that pulls related parts into a whole.
Toward IT Anarchy
Recognizing that EA is a component of BSP, to pronounce EA dead is to pronounce BSP dead, and BSP is the foundation for IT strategy and planning. Thus, to take Mr. Pickering’s argument to the extreme, we should let IT strategy and planning die, allowing IT anarchy within organizations in a world that is rapidly becoming more cost conscious, less secure, more regulated, and more connected.
Non sequitur? Not really. EA, by most interpretations, is a process of alignment between business and IT. It is a process of decomposing loose business strategies and requirements into meaningful operational design — of systems, of processes, of information, and of infrastructure. Often this EA manifests itself as sets of models and diagrams. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a model is worth a million! Unfortunately, within the English language most verbs can also be nouns, so EA, the process, is often confused with EA, the models.
BSP was developed in the ’70s to provide a mechanism to ensure that when an organization invested in IT, it invested optimally and in support of its strategy. BSP also helped to ensure that processes were fixed before they were automated. We all know that when bad processes are automated, things just get worse at a faster pace.
Up until the early ’90s, EA planning was a viable approach in its initial instantiation. As software evolved, becoming commercially available in the late ’80s, it forced commoditization of hardware. The mantra changed from “nobody ever got fired for buying IBM” to “let the software drive the hardware decisions.”
This philosophical change also led to a change in the way in which EA planning should have been performed. Doing future-state 5th normal form E-R diagrams for the entire enterprise was no longer an appropriate EA planning technique. Why? As the software market began to mature in the ’90s, a rash of enterprise products emerged, all with their own data models. These included ERP, SCM and CRM. Those who abandoned EA planning altogether, however, were those feeling the pains of having multiple enterprise applications installed, replete with overlapping functional support and overlapping data sets.
Alas, while EA was no silver bullet, neither were the enterprise class of commercially available applications, particularly when installed devoid of sound planning and control. It is common to see organizations with multiple ERP systems. By having more than one ERP, doesn’t that fundamentally remove the “E” from ERP?
Our studies show, however, that those with governed enterprise architecture standards in place during this timeframe enjoyed a 30% reduction in end-user computing costs.
Architecture And Packages In Javafx Api With Examples
Introduction to JavaFX API
Web development, programming languages, Software testing & others
Architecture of JavaFX APIBelow is the architecture of JavaFX API.
In the GUI application, a scene graph is considered as the starting point of its construction. It consists of all the application primitives known as a node. Prism in this architecture is a higher performance hardware-accelerated graphical pipeline which helps in rendering the JavaFX graphics. Here, both two dimensional and three-dimensional graphics can be rendered.
GWT offers services for managing surfaces, windows, timers and event queues. It connects the platform of JavaFX API and native OS. WebView is the JavaFX component that helps in processing the content using a technology known as Web Kit. It is an internal web browser engine which is open-source. This component provides several web technologies such as HTML5, DOM, JavaScript, CSS and SVG. The media engine in JavaFX is based on an engine called a streamer which is open-source. This engine supports the both the video playback and audio content.
Packages in JavaFX APIThe important JavaFX API packages include:
javafx.animation: A set of classes will be provided that is for transition-related animations.
javafx.application: Application life-cycle classes of the package will be provided.
javafx.beans: Interfaces that explain the observability generic form is explained in this package.
javafx.beans.binding: Binding characteristics are explained in this package.
javafx.beans.property: Read-only and writable properties along with numerous implementations are provided in this package.
javafx.beans.value: ObservableValue interface and WritableValue interface, along with all the sub-interfaces, are provided in this package.
javafx.collections: All the JavaFX collections and their utilities are available in this package.
javafx.concurrent: A set of classes will be provided for the javafx.task.
javafx.css: An API that makes the properties stylable with the help of CSS and supports pseudo-class state is provided in this package.
javafx.embed.swing: A set of classes that helps in using JavaFX within the swing applications is provided.
javafx.embed.swt: A set of classes that helps in using JavaFX within the SWT applications is provided.
javafx.event: A basic framework is provided for the FX events, their delivery as well as handling.
javafx.fxml: In order to load a hierarchy of object from markup, this package contains all the classes.
javafx.geometry: This package consists of 2D classes set that define as well as perform operations on objects that relate to 2-D geometry.
javafx.print: This package offers the JavaFX printing API public classes.
javafx.scene: This package contains the base classes’ core set for the scene graph API in JavaFX.
javafx.scene.canvas: This package offers a class set for canvas which is a rendering API’s immediate mode style.
javafx.scene.chart: This offers several chart components, which is very useful for data visualization.
javafx.scene.control: User interface controls in JavaFX are the specialized nodes which are available in the scene graph of JavaFX. It is especially appropriate for reusing several application contexts.
javafx.scene.effect: This package offers different classes for the attachment of graphical filter effects to the nodes of the JavaFX scene graph.
Examples of JavaFX APIGiven below are the examples of JavaFX API:
Example #1Code:
import javafx.application.Application; import javafx.scene.Scene; import javafx.event.ActionEvent; import javafx.event.EventHandler; import javafx.scene.canvas.*; import javafx.scene.web.*; import javafx.scene.layout.*; import javafx.scene.image.*; import java.io.*; import javafx.geometry.*; import javafx.scene.Group; import javafx.scene.control.* ; import javafx.scene.layout.* ; import javafx.stage.Stage ; import javafx.scene.paint.*; import javafx.scene.shape.Circle; public class BackgroundClassProgram extends Application { public void start(Stage st) { st.setTitle("Sample creation of background. . .") ; Circle c = new Circle(); c.setCenterX(311.0f); c.setCenterY(126.0f); c.setRadius(112.0f); HBox hb = new HBox(c); hb.setSpacing(11); hb.setAlignment(Pos.CENTER); Scene sc = new Scene(hb, 290, 280) ; BackgroundFill bf = new BackgroundFill(Color.RED , CornerRadii.EMPTY , Insets.EMPTY) ; Background bg = new Background(bf); hb.setBackground(bg); st.setScene(sc); st.show(); } public static void main(String args[]) { launch(args); } }Output:
For every program, we have to first import the necessary packages and classes. In this program also, all the necessary classes are imported. Then only the appropriate functions can be used for the display of background colours.
Example #2JavaFX program that displays a timer with the help of API packages.
import java.util.Timer ; import java.util.TimerTask ; public class TimerProgramSample { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println("Timer starts now...") ; Timer tmr = new Timer() ; tmr.schedule(new TimerTask() { @Override public void run() { System.out.println("Timer starts. . . .") ; } }, 3000) ; Timer tt = new Timer() ; tt.scheduleAtFixedRate(new TimerTask() { @Override public void run() { System.out.println("Timer is working fine. . . .") ; } }, 0, 3000) ; } }Output:

What’s Hot in Music This Month: Local Concerts, New Releases Featuring the return of Kendrick Lamar, rising emo-indie star Ethel Cain, and Girl Ultra live in CambridgeWelcome back, Terriers, to our monthly column “What’s Hot in Music.”
This month, bump the long-awaited return of rapper Kendrick Lamar on a road trip, immerse yourself in rising emo-indie star Ethel Cain’s latest, or venture out to Cambridge to see the lively Girl Ultra.
New ReleasesMr. Morale and the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar
Five years since the release of his critically acclaimed Pulitzer-winning album DAMN., rapper and storyteller Kendrick Lamar returns with the highly anticipated Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. The project is a stunning, intimate look at Lamar’s personal journey and confrontations with toxic masculinity, the cycle of sexual abuse, trans rights, mental health, and generational trauma. The first track, “United In Grief,” a heady and confessional banger, is the perfect lead-in to the revelations, or “truths,” Lamar works to unpack, all beginning with the rapper seeing a therapist. The fruits of his emotional labor continue in “Father Time,” with the rapper processing his wants and needs for paternal affirmation from his childhood and the resulting lessons he’s learned as a father of two: “I love my father for tellin’ me to take off the gloves / Cause everything he didn’t want was everything I was / And to my partners that figured it out without a father / I salute you, may your blessings be neutral to your toddlers.” And “We Cry Together” is not for the faint of heart, disguised as six minutes of a couple’s dispute, with an emotional performance from actress Taylour Paige, who shares her feelings on gender inequality, among other topics, in the entertainment industry and the larger surrounding world. Other standouts: “Auntie Diaries,” a provocative look into Lamar’s struggling acceptance of the trans community, and “Mother I Sober,” a profoundly introspective reflection on sexual trauma as seen through the experiences of his mother, his fiancée, abusers, and generations of the Black community.
Preacher’s Daughter, Ethel Cain
Hayden Silas Anhedönia, known by her persona and stage name Ethel Cain, grew up in Perry, Fla., in a religious household, where Christianity grabbed ahold of her life the second she stepped into it. She came out to her family at age 12, and by her 20th birthday, had come out as trans. Thus, her relationship with religion is complicated, and this debut album explores the death and tragedy of Ethel Cain, her persona in an alternative, and the darkest, timeline of her life. The project is her magnum opus following three EPs, and is what Anhedönia hopes will be the “next great American record.” The album succeeds, and is an epic that takes on Southern Baptism and saccharine American sentiments, breaking it all down into all-too-American generational trauma. One of few pop-esque records on the otherwise broody gothic album, “American Teenager” critiques the realities of the American Dream and ties in Anhedönia’s own lived experiences with Christian sensibilities: “The neighbor’s brother came home in a box / But he wanted to go, so maybe it was his fault / Another red heart taken by the American Dream.” Through Ethel, Anhedönia tackles a traumatic past of abuse, and in a Pitchfork interview, explains her negativity about the Christian religion in her music: “Everything I do through my art is a way to get my thumb on top of what’s happened to me in the past, because now I’m in control and I can’t be hurt by it again.”
Dance Fever, Florence + The Machine
Florence Welch, lead vocalist of the band Florence + The Machine, is upended by her desire to pursue motherhood and a world that’s not kind to women or mothers. In the project’s first single and track “King,” she struggles over how children could fit into her lifestyle, how she could juggle her music and kids. A staunch critic of the burdens society has placed on her kind, Florence continues her campaign against patriarchy in the satirical “Dream Girl Evil” and “Girls Against God,” which ties in her frustrations during COVID-19 lockdowns. Among other standout tracks: “The Bomb,” where we see Florence, notorious for her tendency to fall back on feelings of loneliness, and in Mitski-esque fashion, consider taking a break from her music career.
Harry’s House, Harry Styles
Six years after forming One Direction, the biggest boyband in the world, on the British talent show The X Factor, each member left in 2023 to chase a solo career. The cheeky, charismatic Harry Styles, in particular, hasn’t looked back. The megastar’s third, and latest, studio album introduces refreshing yet easily assimilable plays into the radio stratosphere. With an undying and loyal fanbase that’s followed him through his teens to his now-late-20s, the status of Harry’s House on the charts was a little iffy in the days leading up to release. But now the full force of the Briton’s domination can be felt simply by turning to any station, sure to be blasting a track off the quirky and danceable project. Standouts: the infectious and jazzy “Music for a Sushi Restaurant,” the sincere and therapeutic “Matilda,” and the wildly popular “As It Was.”
Upcoming concertsGirl Ultra and Katzù Oso, Sonia Live Music Venue, 10 Brookline St., Cambridge, Sunday, June 5, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $20, here.
Mariana de Miguel, known as Girl Ultra, was born and raised in Mexico City, where she dropped out of film school to pursue her passion for music by playing DJ sets, eventually releasing music under her current moniker. Growing up under house and R&B, de Miguel initially incorporated these influences into her sets, realizing the Spanish scene lacked such a sound—which she quickly worked to fill. Girl Ultra’s debut EP, Boys, had a Spanish cover of R&B giant Daniel Caesar’s “Get You,” but the singer refuses to be defined or limited to genre, demonstrated by her latest EP, El Sur, a project with a luscious mix of punk, pop, and house beats. Girl Ultra is set to tour Boston on Sunday, with support from Katzù Oso.
Wet, Paradise Rock Club, 967 Commonwealth Ave., Monday, June 6, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $22, here.
The indie band Wet began as a trio when Kelly Zutrau, Joe Valle, and Marty Sulkow met in college through mutual friends. The three played gigs in Brooklyn before catching the attention of record label Neon Gold, which released their debut EP Wet before they switched to Columbia Records for their two studio albums, Don’t You and Still Run. Their third, and latest, project, Letter Blue, released independently via record label alternative AWAL, features some pretty high-profile collabs, such as writing and production credits from Frank Ocean’s go-to keyboardist Buddy Ross. Find the trio near campus next Monday at the Paradise Rock Club.
NOAHFINNCE, Sonia Live Music Venue, 10 Brookline St., Cambridge, Tuesday, June 7, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $15, here.
The fresh-faced Noah Adams is a self-proclaimed champion of authenticity and a voice for a new generation. Unsurprisingly, the English singer found his beginnings on the internet, where Instagram and YouTube became the home for his musical endeavors as well as his personal experiences as a transgender male. The budding artist released his debut EP, “Stuff from My Brain,” in 2023, a pop-punk record that delves into Adams’ mental illness, the struggles of fitting in, and criticism of media portrayal of minorities. NOAHFINNCE is set to perform in Cambridge for the first time on June 7.
Ravyn Lenae, Brighton Music Hall, 158 Brighton Ave., Allston, Friday, June 10, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $30, here.
For those who had been paying close attention to Chicago’s R&B scene, the rise of Ravyn Lenae comes as no surprise. The singer was discovered when she had her first recording session at Classick Studios in her hometown, and was quickly coaxed to join the music collective Zero Fatigue, founded by rapper Smino. Following a period of supporting Noname and SZA on tour, she worked on her debut album HYPNOS for four years before its release on May 20. The project was quickly stickered under Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” list and was granted a rare 8.5 rating. Pitchfork deemed it “a mature reintroduction, a love-stained, moody transport that flies through Lenae’s world with a featherlight cadence.”
BENEE, House of Blues Boston, 15 Lansdowne St., Boston, Tuesday, June 14, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $26, here.
New Zealand singer Stella Rose Bennett dominated the New Zealand music scene, taking home three major awards at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2023, before blowing up internationally. Her single “Supalonely” exploded on TikTok following a viral dance challenge, with over 600 million current streams on Spotify, leading to an American publicity tour that included performances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The singer is currently on her first worldwide tour, with a stop in Boston on June 14.

Last Time In China – User Statistics, New Interface, New Instant Messenger
China has now more internet users than the US. That was one of the items that made its way into almost all news media in the middle of March. Linking China and the internet makes a newsworthy item these days. More about that later on. First look at what Google has changed about their interface, some mobile search statistics, the new Baidu Instant Messenger and Facebook is coming to the Chinese mainland.
Google.cn has a new user interface
The Korean version of Google was the first, sometime ago already, that was pimped with new buttons under the search box. Now chúng tôi has followed (Google Japan also has a new look but slightly different then the Chinese version) and shows animated shortcuts to video search, images, news, maps, blog search, Rebang and the directory page Daohang.
Two of these features need a further introduction.
On Rebang (hot list) you can find metrics about the most popular keywords, including hot keywords for specific categories like real estate, entertainment and more.
Localizing the chúng tôi page and creating direct access to properties like Daohang is intended to better play into the Chinese users preferences.
Mobile search Stats
There were at the end of February 2008 more than 565 million mobile phone users according to a statement from the industry and information ministry. I don’t know the number of users that have access to the internet with their phone but it’s an educated guess that that number is increasing rapidly. From the search point of view it is interesting to know what people are searching for on their mobile.
Google.cn offers on the aforementioned Rebang statistics about the 50 most frequently searched keywords as well as the top 50 mobile image searches. The statistics are daily updated and the searches are for games, celebrities (including basketball players) and not surprisingly mobile phone related stuff.
Baidu Hi Messenger
The search engine Baidu has started its public test with a select group of users for the Baidu Hi Messenger, a new addition to the Baidu tree.
The current market leader by afar is Tencent’s QQ Messenger. In their 2007 fourth quarter and Annual Results they say they have now more than 300 million active users. I don’t challenge the fact that they’re the market leader but I have to add here that the number of 300 million active users sounds slightly overestimated as there aren’t that many internet users yet in China. From what I hear is that many users have more then one account
Number 2 is MSN Messenger which has, according to Analysys Intl., more than 19 million users. MSN messenger is said to be more popular in the working environment. Other players in the IM market are Sina UC (4.1%), Fetion (China mobile) (3.7%) and Aliwangwang (Alibaba) (3.1%).
The first impressions of bloggers and beta testers Tangos and Mobinode are for the most positive and considering Baidu’s domination in the Chinese internet market I wouldn’t be surprised if Baidu Hi will start challenging QQ and MSN at some point in the future.
Baidu announced that some 1 million users have already tested the new IM, the big question here is how many will still be active after 6 months as CWR puts it.
The downside of yet another IM tool that is based on a proprietary protocol is, that it’s a hassle to deal with so many different chat applications that don’t interact. Given that Chinese users are pretty apt at online multitasking that might probably be more my problem though.
To learn more about the IM market in China and QQ in particular I can recommend reading this report.
Facebook coming to China
Facebook has started hiring staff for its China branch according to Inway. Added to this, Facebook users in China have received messages on their main pages asking them to help them out with translating the site into Chinese. The big question, as with so many foreign internet companies trying to get a foothold in China, is whether Facebook will succeed.
Jeremy Goldkorn from Danwei, shares his opinion in the Timesonline:
I don’t think they’ll fare well – there’s not a single foreign internet company that has managed to dominate its sector,” and adds “It’s also a cultural thing,” Mr Goldkorn said. “Facebook is based on people using their real names and being honest, whereas the Chinese like the ability to be anonymous. E-mail addresses will rarely include a person’s name, and on bulletin boards a lot of the posts are anonymous, so I’m not sure the Facebook model will work.
In addition to this there’s also the issue of censorship. Will the content, the groups and the discussions be monitored by Facebook themselves or will they wait till the censor kicks in. In other words, how localized will the Chinese version be.
Among the local competition that Facebook will face are QQ, Xiaonei and zhanzuo
China user Statistics Bait
As I mentioned in the introduction I was impressed by the China bait of a research company in Beijing. They released a press release telling the world that China has overtaken the US in the number of Internet Users and it’s an example of very smart pr.
What they did was opening their excel sheet and calculate the growth percentage between the last 2 reports, being 29%. This results in an expected 272 million users by July 2007. The last official report by the CNNIC said there were 210 million users. The difference is 62 million in 6 months. A monthly growth of 10.37 Million.
Outcome, mid March there were more than 220 million internet users in China and as the US had 216 million users at the end of 2007 according to Nielsen, this made that, following these calculations, China now has the most internet users in the world.
The news was picked up by all the mainstream media and I’m sure it raised their profile.
I have previously written about the fact that the CNNIC changed their definition of what constitutes a Chinese internet user. Previously it were “Chinese citizens aged 6 and above who averagely use the Internet at least one hour per week”., but since the report from June 2007 (2007 – 1 in the chart) it’s someone who has used the internet in the past half year.
This of course has influenced the total numbers of internet users. As a small excel exercise I have made a chart comparing the previously (before the new definition was used) half year on half year growth percentages and the current growth percentages.
Taking the old growth scenario, China will overtake the US sometime in 2009. Taking the new scenario the conclusion here is that China will have more internet users in 2011 than inhabitants. Wouldn’t that make for a nice headline?
It’s not scientific at all of course as there will come a moment the growth will slow down and there’s no doubt there are a lot of users in China but it’s something to keep in mind if you make a prognosis.
