NIKE Teases Separate 2024 Re-Release of 2011 Back to the Future Shoe, Power Laces intact [Video]

If there’s one oddity that’s been taking the tech world by storm over these past 72 hours or so, it’s been the 2011 NIKE MAG shoe, straight out of the classic science fiction comedy film Back to the Future II. In this movie it’s Michael J. Fox in his most recognizable role of his career, Marty McFly, sporting the “NIKE MAG” sneakers in all their futuristic glory. We’ve got full details now on a 2011 release of the shoe, including the awesome fact that proceeds will be going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation in the end – but today a whole new bombshell may well have nearly slipped right under our noses: a “lost scene” from the Back to the Future movies that portends another release of this legendary sneaker set in the future: September 8th, 2024 to be exact, where they’ll include the most excellent “Power Laces” feature missing from the 2011 limited edition drop!

In this ad spot you’ll be glad to know that a whole slew of your best Back to the Future / NIKE / NBA personalities make their faces known including Christopher Lloyd (Dr. Emmett Brown in BTTF), basketball player Kevin Durant, Donald Fullilove (Mayor Goldie Wilson from BTTF) and NIKE design genius Tinker Hatfield behind the sales counter. Also the shoe salesman is Bill Hader (one of everyone’s favorite hero comedians currently starring on Saturday Night Live). It’s in this video that we expected to be seeing some extra awesome promotion of the 2011 NIKE MAG and not a whole heck of a lot else, but what we’ve gotten here is NIKE’s full understanding that no matter what they do to release the “greatest shoe never made”, if it isn’t exactly the same as it is in BTTF, it’s not perfect!

What we’re talking about here, of course, is Power Laces! Look at this video, will you? The entire essence of the NIKE MAG is in the power laces, McFly says so!

2024 NIKE MAG teaser — Full Cut!

The video here shows Durant at the NIKE shoe shop being helped by Hader who introduces the 2011 MAG, showing off the lights and the lightness of the sneakers (as opposed to “Heavy” as Durant says, this harkening back to Marty McFly’s famous catchphrase). The Doc blasts into the room, eyeballs ablaze with classic Christopher Lloyd character acting intensity, demanding to see the MAG sneakers — but wait, where are the power laces? Behind the sales counter, Fullilove and Hatfield stand – Hatfield letting the Doc know that he’s traveled back to the wrong future date – he’d have to go forward a bit to 2024 to get the Power Laces version of the NIKE MAG.

Of course the Doc needs those MAGs and he needs them to be equipped with Power Laces, so what do you know? He hops into that Flux Capacitor-equipped time machine capable DeLorean car of his and tears off into the future, but not before giving us a glimpse of the fact that he’s traveling exactly 4 years into the future to September 8th, 2011. Set the coordinates!

UPDATE: essentially CONFIRMED for a future Power Lace release in 2024, MTV’s interview with Back to the Future writer Bob Gale spells it out in nearly perfect plain English:

Gale: Nike wanted to do this in tiers. This is the beginning.MTV: So if this year’s shoes don’t have the auto laces, future years’ might?Gale: Yes! It’s not 2024 yet. It’s only 2011!MTV: I can’t wait that long! I can’t be patient.Gale: No one ever can.

Once again the facts on the 2011 NIKE MAG are as follows:

The original NIKE MAG was worn by the Back to the Future character Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, in the year 2024. It came alive, lit up and formed to Marty’s foot. The 2011 NIKE MAG shoe was designed to be a precise replica of the original from Back to the Future II. The aesthetic is an exact match, down to the contours of the upper, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent NIKE in the strap. The 2011 NIKE MAG illuminates with the pinch of the “ear” of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge.

The 2011 NIKE MAG – It’s About Time.

Cadillac Escala Concept Teases Ct6’S Super

Cadillac Escala Concept teases CT6’s super-luxe big brother

Cadillac has slipped the wraps off its latest concept car, the Escala, at Pebble Beach this evening, and it’s a beguiling vision of the brand’s next super-luxury sedan. Promising to wrap up both the future of Cadillac’s design and technological systems into one sinuous vehicle, the Escala may not reach dealer forecourts in quite this form, but it’s certainly a heavy-handed hint as to the American automaker’s upcoming assault on Mercedes-Benz’s S Class, BMW’s 7 Series, and Audi’s A8.

Cadillac teased the Escala earlier this week, focusing then on the design elements of the interior. The new concept car was to showcase an all-new dashboard complete with arrays of curved OLED screens co-developed with LG Display, Cadillac said, conveniently leaving most of the exterior’s wow-factor to surprise at the California car show.

The result is a vision of what Cadillac’s bigger brother to the CT6 sedan could look like. The Escala – its name the Spanish for “scale” – is described as “a larger, more elite and expressive companion” to the CT6, which currently stakes out a space somewhere around the E-Class and 5 Series.

A larger footprint is a given, therefore, though this is no normal three-box sedan. Instead, Cadillac has opted for a liftback design, visually stretching out the 210.5-inch long body while also throwing in a little more practicality.

Compared to current Cadillac fare, it’s arguably a smoother, less “shouty” aesthetic. Gone are some of the more dramatic, angular creases that have given recent cars from the company an almost Art Deco look, replaced with a new, cleaner grille and light design, three-dimensional grille mesh, and layered-spoke 22-inch wheels.

Cadillac used OLED lighting elements for the exterior lights, for what the company describes as “a sinister look, day and night.” It’s not just for the concept, either, with production cars expected to wear the new face soon enough.

Inside, meanwhile, Cadillac’s renewed focus on challenging German luxury shows itself once again. Up front it’s all about tech, with three curved OLED panels – wrapped, of course, in hand-stitched leather – while the interface previews the next generation of CUE, Cadillac’s love-it-or-hate-it infotainment platform.

It’s controlled by a dial in the center console, with touch-sensitivity, along with both voice and gestures. Still plenty of wood and leather, of course, but they’re joined by a new fabric finish on the wheel, doors, and lower dashboard.

In the back, meanwhile, comfort and relaxation are at the fore. Along with two big, comfortable seats there are slide-out displays built into the headrests, that cleverly collapse until they’re just a sliver of touchscreen to handle the essentials of HVAC control, multimedia, and other basics.

Under the hood there’s a 4.2-liter, twin-turbo V8 engine, which Cadillac says is the prototype of a whole new powertrain it plans to use in future production cars. It promises more fuel economy than the average V8 by deactivating half of the cylinders when under low load.

NOW READ: 2024 Cadillac CTS-V Review

The platform underneath is the same rear-wheel-drive architecture that forms the basis of the CT6, with plenty of aluminum and other lightweight materials to ensure that, even with a 127.1-inch wheelbase, the Escala should still be relatively fleet footed.

Striking doesn’t seem to quite do the Escala justice, though keen followers of the luxury segment might spot a few familiar touches. There’s more than a hint of the Jaguar XJ in the rear three-quarter design, for instance, while the trunk is faintly reminiscent of the old Acura TL. Side-on, there’s a little of Audi’s A7 in the sweep of the roofline.

Nonetheless, there’s all the drama you’d hope for from Cadillac’s spin on “American Luxury” and it has us even more eager to see the CT6’s bigger brother.

“Depending on the development of market segment for large luxury sedans,” Johan de Nysschen, president of Global Cadillac, said of the concept, “Escala is a potential addition to our existing product plan.” Now we just have to see how Caddy fans react.

Amazon, Nike Eye Peloton Acquisition As Pandemic Gains Are Wiped Out

Amazon, Nike eye Peloton acquisition as pandemic gains are wiped out

While not necessarily down and out just yet, it’s safe to say that Peloton is on a downturn. After enjoying increased demand for its exercise machines and, as a result of that demand, a soaring stock price earlier in the pandemic, 2023 was a rough year for the company and 2023 hasn’t gotten off to a much better start. Now, it sounds like Peloton’s struggles may have attracted potential buyers, with some big names reportedly interested in acquiring the chúng tôi Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon is one possible buyer, citing unnamed people familiar with Amazon’s plans. WSJ says that there are other “potential suitors” as well but doesn’t name who they are. However, the Financial Times reports that another interested party is none other than Nike, which considered buying Peloton in 2023 before it went public but ultimately never pulled the trigger on such a deal.

Those are two big names, but any potential deal is still a long way off, as both reports say that any buyout bids are still in their preliminary stages. The Financial Times reports that neither Amazon nor Nike has spoken to Peloton about a possible buyout, so there’s no guarantee that either company will even make a formal offer at this stage. We could see even more suitors come out of the woodwork, though, so talks of a Peloton acquisition don’t necessarily begin and end with Amazon and Nike.

It’s easy to see the appeal, though. Amazon has been trying to break into the fitness space with its subscription-based line of Halo fitness trackers, so it’s already trying something similar to what Peloton offers (just on a less expensive scale). According to these reports, one possible outcome of an Amazon buyout could see Amazon bundling a Peloton subscription in with Amazon Prime. While that makes sense, we’d hate to see what the addition of Peloton exercises would do to the ever-growing price tag of Amazon Prime.

Peloton

The big question is not whether interested buyers will make an offer, but rather whether or not Peloton would be open to the acquisition. Peloton CEO John Foley will have to accept the deal, as WSJ says that “he and other insiders” have 80% of Peloton’s voting power.

The FT also reports that one shareholder, Blackwells Capital LLC, has been attempting to get the board to fire Foley and arrange a buyout deal with another company, but with ownership that only totals around 5%, Blackwells apparently has a lot of convincing to do if it wants to see such a plan come to fruition.

Still, with enough internal pressure to sell, Foley and his allies on the board may accept a deal. For now, there’s little to no movement actually happening – just the whispers of potential purchases. With Peloton’s stock price significantly diminished from its highs during the pandemic, and the specter of possible layoffs looming according to CNBC, this is could be a good time for potential buyers to strike, but it seems that depends on whether or not Foley wants to play ball.

Audi’S Genius Auto Show Wifi Teases A4 Tech And Snarks Rivals

Audi’s genius Auto Show WiFi teases A4 tech and snarks rivals

In this day and age of the internet, mobile devices, and social media powered news, you’d wouldn’t think getting online at the world’s biggest conventions would be a problem. And yet such conventions, even tech-focused ones, are notorious for having near dismal networks. Car shows are, sadly, no exception either. Audi, however, has come up with a clever way to change all that at the 2024 New York Auto Show, and showcase the 2023 Audi A4 and its intelligent connectivity in the process. What better way to get the message across, goes the thinking, than with free, high-speed Wi-Fi.

It is, of course, a marketing campaign, but one that is well thought-out and creative. Not to mention potentially extremely useful and for something in-demand: after all, who can resist the lure of free internet, particularly at an event you’re trying to get the word out about the hottest cars and technologies at break-neck speed.

The genius of the campaign, however, isn’t just in the service but in the very name of the networks themselves. Audi has customized each network’s SSID to highlight a particular aspect of the A4’s systems. One, is named after the car’s Lane Assistance feature, for instance, while another is after its overhead camera. In suitably Inception-style self-reference, there’s even a Wi-Fi network that notes the A4’s own 4G LTE Wi-Fi capabilities.

Audi says it’s confident it can handle 2,000 simultaneous connections without bringing the house down, something likely to be put to the test both during the press days mid-week and then when the popular public days open up after that. To keep the names and features fresh, Audi will be rotating the SSIDs during the New York Auto Show week, with at least 10 networks available at any time.

A4 Wi-fi. 328 No-Fi

A4 BrakeAssist. 328 No

A4 CarPlay. 328 No

A4 12.3″ Screen. 328 0″

A4 TurnAssist. C300 No.

A4 OverheadCamera. C300 No

A4 RearCam. C300 No

If you really wanted you could even go on a Pokémon-style hunt to catch them all, or just try to figure out which SSIDs are calling out which of Audi’s rivals (some are easier than others, with BMW’s 328i getting name-checked for horsepower and torque).

We spent some up-close time with the European version of the A4 last year, shortly after the Frankfurt Auto Show, and came away impressed by not only the design and on-road performance, but the sort of technology Audi has been integrating into the compact executive segment. The company’s Virtual Cockpit is front and center, for instance, with high-resolution graphics and digital gages that were previously the preserve of sports cars like the R8 and TT, while behind the scenes there are an assortment of sensors and driver assistance features including adaptive cruise control and Apple’s CarPlay.

Figuring out a way not only to promote those features, but make New York Auto Show attendees actively go looking for them (or, at least, the free WiFi that they represent) is a clever way of standing out among the best of the auto industry.

You’ll find all Audi’s news – and more – in the SlashGear Cars hub.

9 Slack Alternatives For 2023

Nine of the best team chat tools for making your team extra productive this year

With eight million active users and three million paid users, Slack is the darling of the business communication world. Indeed, the tool is hip and smart. It’s often praised for having multiple integrations, friendly UX and other features.

At the same time, Slack doesn’t work best for many teams. Some consider it expensive or cumbersome. Others find themselves buried under tons of notifications and constantly distracted while using it. In a word, the demand for an alternative communication tool is high and there’s plenty of Slack alternatives. But which one should you choose?

Download our Premium Resource – Essential digital marketing tools

This guide gives Free members a preview of the 30 categories of digital marketing tools you should be using for your marketing.

Access the Essential digital marketing tools

Developing our own Chanty team chat, we’ve explored many different apps and studied their pros and cons. Learning about different features our colleagues/competitors help us in making our app better. We decided to share with you what we’ve learned about Slack alternatives so you could make an informed decision about which app suits your needs best.

1. Microsoft Teams

Here’s Microsoft’s shot to catch up and overtake Slack. Rumor has it, initially, Bill Gates wanted to buy the famous team chat player but later decided to develop his own team tool. Before long, in November 2024 Microsoft Teams made its official launch.

One of the main pros of Microsoft Teams is that it has deep integrations with Office 365 tools. For example, you can share any Office or OneDrive document, access it and edit it, as can your team, without leaving the app. Some services (such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint) are available in the Freemium version, while others (Planner and Yammer) can be used in paid tiers only.

Designed initially for medium-to-large teams, Microsoft Teams may not be easy to deploy and admin. But if you are already on Business Essential or Premium Office 365 plans, using MT seems like a natural choice.

Available On

iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and web

2. Chanty

Chanty is a powerful and easy-to-use team chat with unlimited message history. The tool features traditional chat functionality like public, private and one-to-one conversations. Links, files and pinned messages of every conversation are neatly organized making it easy to instantly find what you need. The built-in task manager allows turning any message into a task so you can discuss it in the task-related conversation.

Chanty’s free plan is limited to 10 people on a team while its paid plans start at $3 per user, per month.

Available On

iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and web

3. Hangouts Chat

Hangouts Chat is another new Slack alternative and was released in February 2023. The tool doesn’t have a Freemium tier so far. But if you happen to have a G Suite subscription, you’ll have automatic access to this team chat app.

Within the tool, you can send direct messages or communicate in rooms. Video calls are available via Hangouts Meet, 50+ third-party apps can be integrated via bots. The tool works with 28 different languages, which seems like a handy feature for multinational teams. Each conversation room can support up to 8,000 members.

Having released just recently, the tool is constantly adding new features. Lately, Hangouts Chat has added notification snoozing and Smart Reply feature. Apparently, the tool will see more adopters soon, as Hangouts “classic” might shut down in 2023 with its users being upgraded to Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet.

Available on

iOS, Android, macOS, and web

4. Flock

Flock is the Indian-based Slack competitor released in 2014. Its paid version is $2 cheaper than the Standard tier of its more famous rival. However, the Freemium version of both tools has the same drawback – 10,000 searchable messages. Flock’s Pro Plan removes this limit, also unlocking some convenient features like screen sharing and 10GB file storage per user.

While Slack relies on bots in providing Actions (Tasks) and Reminders, Flock counts on automation. The tool offers built-in instruments for creating polls, shared to-dos, notes, etc., so users don’t have to bother with formatting data correctly talking to a computer robot.

Over 50 apps (as of December 2023) including Zapier can be integrated with Flock. Also, the tool comes with free multi-channel guests so you can add your vendors or clients to join the workspace.

Available On

iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and web

5. Ryver

Ryver’s key feature is a Trello-like task manager – you can turn messages into assignments and manage them with Kanban boards. Each team or user can create and operate their own sets of tasks. Instant messaging chats and threaded conversations can be reached separately via Chats and Topics menus. The voice and video calls in Ryver are built-in, while you can also integrate Ryver with over 500 other applications via Zapier.

Since 2023, Ryver doesn’t have a Freemium version. You can only try the tool for free for 14 days. Unlike many team chat tools, it charges for a team – not for a user. The cheapest price tag is $49 per month for a team of up to 12 users.

Available On

iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and web

6. Glip

Glip is a team messaging and collaboration app, developed by the US-based cloud operator RingCentral. The tool has a generous freemium tier. Unlimited integrations, chat history, file sharing and some more features that are often paid, Glip provides for free.

The limitation, however, is placed on the number of shared video minutes – it’s 500 minutes per user, per month in the Freemium version. Paying $5 per user monthly you’ll lift, but not remove this restriction. In Glip’s Standard tier per user, you’ll get 1,000 minutes of video chat time.

The messaging is organized within Teams and one-to-one chats. The tool integrates with over 50 popular apps including Zapier and has built-in features like Tasks, Calendar and Notes.

Available On

iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and web

7. Flowdock

Flowdock is yet another veteran team chat launched back in 2009. Initially, designed for developers, it’s been adjusted for diverse kinds of businesses.

Flowdock has no Freemium version unless you have a team up to five members.

Available On

iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and Web

8. Workplace by Facebook Available on

iOS, Android, Windows, macOS

9. Mattermost

Mattermost is an open-source and private cloud Slack alternative. For those of you not tech-savvy, ‘open-source’ means you can adjust the tool to your needs, while ‘private cloud’ suggests you can host your digital workspace in your own environment to make it more secure.

Over 700 cloud-based applications are available through Zapier integration. Like in Slack, communication is organized in private, public channels and via direct messages.

Mattermost has a Freemium version with unlimited message history and multi-language support for smaller teams. Another freebie is the custom branding, which is usually paid in team chats. Mattermost fee-based plans start from $39 per user per year.

Available for

iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux

Conclusion

As you can see, team chats and their features vary greatly. Some of the tools rely more on bots (Hangouts Chat), while others count on automation (Flock). Some use integrations heavily (Slack), while others develop a number of built-in tools (Glip). Some are designed primarily for big enterprises (Microsoft Teams), while others suit better smaller and medium businesses (Chanty).

Luckily, all the tools listed above are available for a free trial, so you can explore them firsthand to find which one best suits your needs. The most easy-to-use, fast and smart tool is likely to be a fit for you.
