3 Post Google Farmer Update Link
Over a month after the Google Farmer update rolled out in the US, the SEO world seems to have settled back down again. As with all Google updates the winners are left breathing a sigh of relief while the losers are frantically trying to correct their strategy and regain their previous rankings & traffic levels. I hope the ideas here help if you’re in the latter category.
If you have yet to read about the Google Farmer update the following articles are good background:
But for us, this is the best summary of the impact – it’s a compilation by SISTRIX showing how article sites were affected by the Google Farmer update:
The most dramatic is the number of keywords that these sites rank for. Seems SISTRIX have a useful index and technology for benchmarking the SEO effectiveness of sites and how they perform through time! We’d be interested to know about companies who use this for tracking.
Importance of Link Building Tactics, before & after…Since the launch of the Google Farmer-Panda update, some core traditional SEO tactics have reduced in their effectiveness. The graphic below outlines my thoughts on the difference for specific tactics before and after the Google Farmer update. If I had to summarise the Google Farmer update in one paragraph here is what I would say:
3 Tips for link building in 2011
1. Don’t focus on the linkIt’s all to easy to just go after a link, so much so that you only ever measure yourself on how many links you have or how many more than your competitors your website has. While this is one KPI, if links doesn’t drive traffic or conversions either directly or through ranking increases, then it is not worth the time & effort.
Instead focus your time & energy on creating reasons for people to want to link to you. This could be because you are generating amazing blog posts, publishing white papers that raise the bar in your industry or it could be that you turn complex ebooks into interesting graphics that are easy to consume.
So, think about your audience and create content that they will find amazing & deliver it in a way that makes it fun to consume. If you get this right, then people will link to you or they will request to feature you on their site. This approach can help generate shares and tweet to your network (all good for your social score), or a blog post reviewing your content but this will ensure a much. more natural & scalable way to generate links.
2. Make your content inherently sharable 3. Create a relationships not linksIn the past link building has been about building a list of websites you think you need a link from and then trying to work out the best way to “get” on that website. Times however have moved on and that method was never very effective anyway.
Instead, consider where your audience are currently active online and think if there is a way you can add value to their experience on those websites. This could be by becoming an active member of the community or it could be by forming a relationship with the site owner where you feature as a guest blogger or maybe you supply ebooks / white papers for them to use on their websites. Back to my initial tip, do not approach it for the link, approach it from adding value to the customers this way you will create a relationship both with other websites but crucially its users. This will help grow awareness of you / your brand which in-turn will generate traffic to your website and therefore give your content more opportunities to be shared.

What’s Hot in Music This Month: Local Concerts, New Releases Featuring the return of Kendrick Lamar, rising emo-indie star Ethel Cain, and Girl Ultra live in CambridgeWelcome back, Terriers, to our monthly column “What’s Hot in Music.”
This month, bump the long-awaited return of rapper Kendrick Lamar on a road trip, immerse yourself in rising emo-indie star Ethel Cain’s latest, or venture out to Cambridge to see the lively Girl Ultra.
New ReleasesMr. Morale and the Big Steppers, Kendrick Lamar
Five years since the release of his critically acclaimed Pulitzer-winning album DAMN., rapper and storyteller Kendrick Lamar returns with the highly anticipated Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers. The project is a stunning, intimate look at Lamar’s personal journey and confrontations with toxic masculinity, the cycle of sexual abuse, trans rights, mental health, and generational trauma. The first track, “United In Grief,” a heady and confessional banger, is the perfect lead-in to the revelations, or “truths,” Lamar works to unpack, all beginning with the rapper seeing a therapist. The fruits of his emotional labor continue in “Father Time,” with the rapper processing his wants and needs for paternal affirmation from his childhood and the resulting lessons he’s learned as a father of two: “I love my father for tellin’ me to take off the gloves / Cause everything he didn’t want was everything I was / And to my partners that figured it out without a father / I salute you, may your blessings be neutral to your toddlers.” And “We Cry Together” is not for the faint of heart, disguised as six minutes of a couple’s dispute, with an emotional performance from actress Taylour Paige, who shares her feelings on gender inequality, among other topics, in the entertainment industry and the larger surrounding world. Other standouts: “Auntie Diaries,” a provocative look into Lamar’s struggling acceptance of the trans community, and “Mother I Sober,” a profoundly introspective reflection on sexual trauma as seen through the experiences of his mother, his fiancée, abusers, and generations of the Black community.
Preacher’s Daughter, Ethel Cain
Hayden Silas Anhedönia, known by her persona and stage name Ethel Cain, grew up in Perry, Fla., in a religious household, where Christianity grabbed ahold of her life the second she stepped into it. She came out to her family at age 12, and by her 20th birthday, had come out as trans. Thus, her relationship with religion is complicated, and this debut album explores the death and tragedy of Ethel Cain, her persona in an alternative, and the darkest, timeline of her life. The project is her magnum opus following three EPs, and is what Anhedönia hopes will be the “next great American record.” The album succeeds, and is an epic that takes on Southern Baptism and saccharine American sentiments, breaking it all down into all-too-American generational trauma. One of few pop-esque records on the otherwise broody gothic album, “American Teenager” critiques the realities of the American Dream and ties in Anhedönia’s own lived experiences with Christian sensibilities: “The neighbor’s brother came home in a box / But he wanted to go, so maybe it was his fault / Another red heart taken by the American Dream.” Through Ethel, Anhedönia tackles a traumatic past of abuse, and in a Pitchfork interview, explains her negativity about the Christian religion in her music: “Everything I do through my art is a way to get my thumb on top of what’s happened to me in the past, because now I’m in control and I can’t be hurt by it again.”
Dance Fever, Florence + The Machine
Florence Welch, lead vocalist of the band Florence + The Machine, is upended by her desire to pursue motherhood and a world that’s not kind to women or mothers. In the project’s first single and track “King,” she struggles over how children could fit into her lifestyle, how she could juggle her music and kids. A staunch critic of the burdens society has placed on her kind, Florence continues her campaign against patriarchy in the satirical “Dream Girl Evil” and “Girls Against God,” which ties in her frustrations during COVID-19 lockdowns. Among other standout tracks: “The Bomb,” where we see Florence, notorious for her tendency to fall back on feelings of loneliness, and in Mitski-esque fashion, consider taking a break from her music career.
Harry’s House, Harry Styles
Six years after forming One Direction, the biggest boyband in the world, on the British talent show The X Factor, each member left in 2023 to chase a solo career. The cheeky, charismatic Harry Styles, in particular, hasn’t looked back. The megastar’s third, and latest, studio album introduces refreshing yet easily assimilable plays into the radio stratosphere. With an undying and loyal fanbase that’s followed him through his teens to his now-late-20s, the status of Harry’s House on the charts was a little iffy in the days leading up to release. But now the full force of the Briton’s domination can be felt simply by turning to any station, sure to be blasting a track off the quirky and danceable project. Standouts: the infectious and jazzy “Music for a Sushi Restaurant,” the sincere and therapeutic “Matilda,” and the wildly popular “As It Was.”
Upcoming concertsGirl Ultra and Katzù Oso, Sonia Live Music Venue, 10 Brookline St., Cambridge, Sunday, June 5, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $20, here.
Mariana de Miguel, known as Girl Ultra, was born and raised in Mexico City, where she dropped out of film school to pursue her passion for music by playing DJ sets, eventually releasing music under her current moniker. Growing up under house and R&B, de Miguel initially incorporated these influences into her sets, realizing the Spanish scene lacked such a sound—which she quickly worked to fill. Girl Ultra’s debut EP, Boys, had a Spanish cover of R&B giant Daniel Caesar’s “Get You,” but the singer refuses to be defined or limited to genre, demonstrated by her latest EP, El Sur, a project with a luscious mix of punk, pop, and house beats. Girl Ultra is set to tour Boston on Sunday, with support from Katzù Oso.
Wet, Paradise Rock Club, 967 Commonwealth Ave., Monday, June 6, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $22, here.
The indie band Wet began as a trio when Kelly Zutrau, Joe Valle, and Marty Sulkow met in college through mutual friends. The three played gigs in Brooklyn before catching the attention of record label Neon Gold, which released their debut EP Wet before they switched to Columbia Records for their two studio albums, Don’t You and Still Run. Their third, and latest, project, Letter Blue, released independently via record label alternative AWAL, features some pretty high-profile collabs, such as writing and production credits from Frank Ocean’s go-to keyboardist Buddy Ross. Find the trio near campus next Monday at the Paradise Rock Club.
NOAHFINNCE, Sonia Live Music Venue, 10 Brookline St., Cambridge, Tuesday, June 7, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $15, here.
The fresh-faced Noah Adams is a self-proclaimed champion of authenticity and a voice for a new generation. Unsurprisingly, the English singer found his beginnings on the internet, where Instagram and YouTube became the home for his musical endeavors as well as his personal experiences as a transgender male. The budding artist released his debut EP, “Stuff from My Brain,” in 2023, a pop-punk record that delves into Adams’ mental illness, the struggles of fitting in, and criticism of media portrayal of minorities. NOAHFINNCE is set to perform in Cambridge for the first time on June 7.
Ravyn Lenae, Brighton Music Hall, 158 Brighton Ave., Allston, Friday, June 10, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $30, here.
For those who had been paying close attention to Chicago’s R&B scene, the rise of Ravyn Lenae comes as no surprise. The singer was discovered when she had her first recording session at Classick Studios in her hometown, and was quickly coaxed to join the music collective Zero Fatigue, founded by rapper Smino. Following a period of supporting Noname and SZA on tour, she worked on her debut album HYPNOS for four years before its release on May 20. The project was quickly stickered under Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” list and was granted a rare 8.5 rating. Pitchfork deemed it “a mature reintroduction, a love-stained, moody transport that flies through Lenae’s world with a featherlight cadence.”
BENEE, House of Blues Boston, 15 Lansdowne St., Boston, Tuesday, June 14, at 7 pm. Purchase tickets, starting at $26, here.
New Zealand singer Stella Rose Bennett dominated the New Zealand music scene, taking home three major awards at the New Zealand Music Awards in 2023, before blowing up internationally. Her single “Supalonely” exploded on TikTok following a viral dance challenge, with over 600 million current streams on Spotify, leading to an American publicity tour that included performances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The singer is currently on her first worldwide tour, with a stop in Boston on June 14.

10 Tips For Mastering E
According to a recent study conducted by Compass, the average conversion rate for e-commerce stores is just 1.4%, with top performers achieving around 3%.
While this may come as no surprise to anyone who manages or markets an e-commerce store, the reality is that the average marketer sees only one sale delivered from every 100 visits.
Do you want to be just average? Or do you want to be better than the rest? Better than your competitors? If so, you need to ensure that your conversion rate is better than average and converts as many visitors into purchasers as possible. You need to aim to achieve a conversion rate which exceeds 1.4% and comes in closer to 3%. Achieving higher may be possible in some industries, however for the most, 3% should be seen as the upper target.
Luckily (or perhaps unluckily), most e-commerce stores suffer from some common issues. Issues which, in many cases, are relatively quick and easy to fix.
Here are 10 tips for mastering e-commerce conversion rate optimization:
1. Never Underestimate the Power of a Search BoxFirst, ensure that you clearly display a search box in a prominent position in your store. That means that it shouldn’t be hidden away in the footer of the site or even below the fold. Make it easy for those looking for it to find your search box and don’t try to reinvent the wheel.
The search box should, in most cases, sit within the header section of your site. However it’s not uncommon for this to now be the primary above-the-fold focus on some stores. Why? Because it’s disruptive and does a fantastic job of leading a consumer on their journey through your store. What could be clearer than offering the opportunity to search for products rather than trying to navigate menus?
This has become almost commonplace in the travel industry, with hotel and flight searches taking center stage.
It’s not only seen in the travel space, however, and there’s becoming a real justification to do something a little different and offer this sort of search option when selling everything from fashion to electronics.
Take a look at these eight great examples of great e-commerce site search on the Lemonstand blog.
Secondly, ensure that your site search returns relevant results. All too often, users search for a product only to be returned no results. This is a surefire way to pass your hard-earned traffic over to your competitors.
2. Offer Universal Free ShippingCharging for shipping (especially when your competitors aren’t) can be a conversion killer for e-commerce stores. It’s absolutely vital that you regularly monitor what your competitors are offering in order to be able to at least match what they’re doing or, ideally, better it.
Not all stores will be able to offer completely free shipping as this, of course, depends on upon the products being sold and the costs associated with dispatching an order. Where possible, however, take the time to experiment with the effect which removing all shipping costs has upon both revenue and profit.
Offering free shipping allows consumers to make purchase decisions based solely upon the price of goods and makes it far easier to compare the total cost of an order between different retailers. This can be an especially useful tool if you offer the lowest total cost and are retaining low-value consumables.
In instances where you are unable to offer free shipping on all orders, test the effect of decreasing the ‘Free Shipping Over…’ threshold.
In short, keep a close eye on what your competitors offer on this front and explore ways to not only match but better their pricing.
3. Implement Independent ReviewsAs a consumer, reviews collected by a retailer themselves often raise a slight concern as to their authenticity. At the end of the day, if you read a review directly on a merchant’s e-commerce store, what’s to say that it is genuine and hasn’t been left as a result of gifting or offering financial incentives? Trust is one of the reasons for a poor conversion rate of an e-commerce store.
Whilst many retailers have recently claimed that less than 2% of reviews are spurious, experts suspect that the actual percentage could be far higher.
It’s important that marketers give consumers a reason to trust the reviews and ratings left by previous customers and the easiest way to do this is to sign up an independent reviews platform. While Trustpilot is perhaps the most established and widely-used option available, both Feefo and Reviews offer comparable solutions, all of which work in the same way.
Reviews and ratings can still be embedded and shared on your e-commerce store and consumers love the fact that, in most cases, the platforms are automated while allowing independent, third party, reviews to be collected.
4. Offer Live Chat SupportLove it or hate it; live chat can work wonders for e-commerce stores looking for additional ways to engage with potential customers and clients and to be there to answer quick and easy questions from those who would prefer not to pick up the phone or wait for an email reply.
If a user has a quick question which they want answering before completing a purchase, they may not have the time available to pick up the phone or await an email response. Live chat, however, can usually deliver an answer in these cases within just a few minutes.
If you’re not offering answers to questions within product descriptions and fail to offer a simple solution to allow these to be asked, there’s a chance you’ll lose the sale.
The likes of Zopim or Olark offer completely free of charge plans which can be a great way to test the water and establish whether live chat works for your business and can help to drive an increase in conversion rate.
Be sure to allow your users to leave a message at times when your support team is offline.
5. Communicate Your Value PropositionPerhaps the one question you need to ask yourself when considering ways to improve the conversion rate of your e-commerce store is, “What sets you apart from the competition?”
Too many stores fail to communicate their value proposition to potential clients and customers; that is, making it easy and straightforward to understand what makes them different and why someone should purchase from them and not their competitors.
Your value proposition could be your own products, your price point, your knowledge, and experience or even your ability to have purchases delivered faster than anyone else, but if users aren’t aware of it, how can they use it to make a purchase decision?
If your e-commerce store isn’t effectively showcasing the ways in which you add value to customers, take the time to make changes to ensure that it does so in a clear and concise manner.
6. Improve the Quality of Your Product ImagesAccording to a recent infographic by NuBlue which looks at ‘The Anatomy Of A Perfect E-Commerce Store,’ customers no longer want to browse a website, they want to experience it.
This, in many ways, couldn’t be closer to the truth and is one of the reasons why we’ve seen a real transformation in the quality and creativity of product images in recent years.
To get straight to the point; if your product photos are low quality and unimaginative, you will lose sales.
Consumers want to see not only the very highest quality images alongside a product, but also those which present it in an in-use setting. You can no longer get away with product images which showcase your goods on a white background – you must take the time to show them being used.
Invest high-quality, creative images and you’ll undoubtedly get this investment back in a higher conversion rate.
See below a great example of pillows depicted primarily in a bedroom setting rather than using the product pack as the main image:
7. Take Time to Perfect Your Product DescriptionsWhilst it may be common sense to most; you’d be surprised at how many e-commerce stores simply use stock product descriptions supplied by the manufacturer of a product.
Not only does this present duplicate content issues, it also offers a less-than-optimal user experience.
There’s a good chance that a user has already touched upon a manufacturer’s stock description at some stage during their buying cycle and for that reason it pays to take the time to perfect your produce descriptions. Yes, a great copywriter won’t come cheap but the resultant increase in conversions from getting descriptions right will outweigh any costs.
Start by compiling a list of your ten most popular products and have a professional copywriter work with you and your team (especially your sales team) to refine and perfect the descriptions. Turn your product descriptions into great stories. Track conversion rates over a monthly period, both before and after rolling out the copy and, in the likely event that you see an increase, you’ll have the confidence to go ahead and invest in having each one of the site’s product descriptions rewritten.
8. Invest in Product Video ContentVideo is the closest a consumer can get to a product without actually holding it in their hands, and it’s one of the main reasons why those retailers who make the investment in videos are showcasing significant levels of growth.
When a user is able to see a product up close, they are far more likely to convert; even if they’re not able to physically touch it.
Video goes a long way to bridging the gap between online and offline transactions.
It’s strongly recommend that you initially roll out video content across your top performing products in order to be able to justify the production costs associated with filming and producing.
Always ensure videos are prominent and clearly labelled, and work on a page layout which takes this into account.
9. Use Clear Progress Indicators on the CheckoutIn 2023, the average basket abandonment rate was 68% – which means that two-thirds of online consumer who add something to their basket are failing to complete the purchase.
ConversionXL has done a fantastic job of compiling ‘The Ultimate Guide To Increasing E-Commerce Conversion Rates” which highlights some of the key reasons why so many consumers are filling baskets only later to abandon them.
One of the tried-and-tested ways to reduce this, however, is to utilise clear progress indicators on the checkout for your site as this can help to show consumers how many steps are left in the purchase process or, in the case of simple checkout pages, how far through it you are.
10. Offer Multiple Payment GatewaysLast but not least; always ensure that you offer multiple payment gateways.
It may be simpler for you to only accept PayPal, not every consumer wants to use this payment platform and, as such, it’s important that you offer more than one gateway. Look into options to accept credit and debit cards directly as well as considering newer gateways such as Amazon.
By offering more than one payment gateway, you’re effectively covering all your bases and can ensure that basket and checkout drop-offs are not caused by issues relating to accepted payment methods.
The bottom line is that if your e-commerce store doesn’t tick all of the above boxes, there’s more than likely room for improvement and a real chance to generate additional conversions without growing traffic. Conversion rate optimization is not a one-off project, rather something which needs to be baked into your wider digital marketing strategy. Ultimately, increasing your conversion rate means a better ROI from marketing spend and for that reason alone is why it’s something which no marketer should ignore.
If you’re responsible for the marketing of an e-commerce store, do yourself a favour and put in place a plan to action the above tips in the coming weeks. For easy reference, here’s a summary in the form of an infographic:

Motorola Moto E 4G Review
Our Verdict
The new Moto E 4G is a worthy upgrade over the original Moto E, with upgrades in every area. For an extra £20 it adds 4G LTE connectivity and a front-facing camera, plus performance and storage improvements. It might not be as fast as the grey-market Doogee F1 Turbo Mini, but this Moto E 4G is a much better deal than the EE Kestrel, making it the best budget 4G phone intended for UK sale we’ve seen.
Motorola has upgraded its super-budget smartphone, the Moto E, for 2023. The new Motorola Moto E has received some useful hardware upgrades for faster performance, and comes in a version with 4G LTE, making it a better buy than the Moto G 4G. (Also see: Best budget smartphones 2023.)
Motorola Moto E 4G / New Moto E review: Price and availabilityMotorola’s 4G Moto E is available now at £109. Note that many networks will also require you to buy a £10 top-up, however. For example, you can buy the Moto E 4G on O2’s network from Amazon for £119. The non-4G model will be available in the US, Latin America and India from 3 March, with other countries to follow. That 3G version will cost $119.99 in the US, but a UK price is not yet known.
At £109 this budget 4G phone goes up against the likes of the EE Kestrel and Doogee F1 Turbo Mini. With some useful hardware upgrades that we’ll outline below, the Moto E is no longer just a cheap phone for first-time or light users, but a proper Android smartphone that is more than capable enough for day-to-day use. (Also see: Best cheap 4G phones.)
Motorola Moto E 4G vs Motorola Moto G 4GThroughout this review you’ll see how we’ve compared the new Moto E 4G to other budget phones such as the EE Kestrel and Doogee F1 Turbo Mini. The more obvious comparison is to Motorola’s own Moto G, of course. (Also see: Old Moto E vs new Moto E.)
The Moto G has had a bit of an odd history, first sold as a 3G phone ( mk 1, reviewed), then upgraded to 4G ( mk 2, reviewed), and then a second version was released without 4G (
So ignoring the fact the mk 2 Moto G, which comes with 4G, is now over a year old, is there any reason why you might choose to buy the Moto G 4G over the Moto E 4G?
In a word: no.
Sold SIM-free at the Carphone Warehouse for £139, this £30 cheaper Motorola Moto E matches or improves on many of its core specs. Placed on the desk in front of me the difference in size and weight is barely noticeable (the Moto G 4G is just 2g lighter and only 0.7mm thinner). The new Moto E 4G has a newer processor, faster graphics and a larger-capacity battery. Meanwhile, the Moto G 4G has a slightly higher-resolution still-4.5in screen at 1280×720 (326ppi vs the 245ppi of the new Moto E), and an LED flash at the rear. Worth an extra £30? No chance.
Motorola Moto E 4G / New Moto E review: Design & buildThe new Moto E 4G is very similar in its design to the original Moto E, with the same curved rear, chunky design that feels good in the hand, and reasonably thin screen bezel. It’s lost one of the two metal bars at the front, now with just the one at the top to hide the speaker. For a budget phone, it looks pretty good.
Whereas you could change the rear shell on the original Moto E, with this new version you can also change the grippy band that runs around its edge, allowing you to mix-and-match colours and create your own design. Motorola shells and bands are sold separately, though, and the Moto E ships with matching black or white shell and band. (also see Best smartphones 2023 and Best Android phones 2023.)
A key difference is the slightly larger screen. Now a Kestrel-matching 4.5in rather than the 4.3in we saw in the original Moto E, the Motorola offers slightly more screen space on which to watch videos and play games. The resolution hasn’t changed, though, meaning this qHD (540×960) IPS display has a slightly lower pixel density of 245- rather than 256ppi. Show us the difference and we’ll show you a liar.
The display itself is good for the price, bright and reasonably clear for a qHD screen. IPS tech means colours are true and viewing angles are good. The Moto E’s screen is now splashproof; it also has an anti-smudge coating and is protected with Gorilla Glass 3.
Despite the increase in screen size, the new Moto E is just 3g heavier than the original. The reassuringly heavy 145g smartphone is the same width at 12.3mm, which is a tell-tale sign of its budget price, and just a little longer and wider at 66.8×129.9mm.
Motorola Moto E 4G / New Moto E review: Hardware and performanceThe new Moto E features several hardware upgrades. It still has a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, but the 410 chip seen here is quad- rather than dual-core. Memory is the same, at 1GB, while storage has doubled to 8GB. As before you can add up to 32GB via microSD. (Neither the memory or storage allocations would be anything to shout about with a flagship phone, but at this price they’re very reasonable.) And where the original featured the Adreno 302 GPU, this new Moto E has the 306.
We ran the new Moto E 4G through our usual benchmarks and were pleasantly surprised with its performance. Whereas the original managed 608 points in Geekbench 3.0’s multi-core component, the new Moto E recorded 1463. In the single-core component we saw 464 points. In terms of raw performance, that makes it significantly faster than the original Moto E, quite a bit faster than the EE Kestrel, and lagging only the Doogee F1 (but that’s a grey-market phone, and you may prefer to stick with one intended for sale in the UK).
In SunSpider it lagged those phones with its 1301ms score, but again saw a marked improvement over the original Moto E’s 1877ms. And it was the same story for graphics performance, with the new Moto E 4G turning in 6fps in Manhattan and 13fps in T-Rex (the original managed 5fps in Manhattan and 11fps in T-Rex). You can compare these results to all the phones we’ve recently tested in our article what’s the fastest smartphone 2023.
In actual use, the new Moto E feels pretty swift in general, but there can be annoying delays when opening apps. There’s also slight hesitancy when navigating around Lollipop, but nothing you won’t quickly get used to.
Motorola Moto E 4G / New Moto E review: CamerasOne of the additions to the new Moto E is a front-facing camera. It’s only a VGA model, and not much cop for selfies (although you can set a timer), but those looking to Skype or video chat through other means will appreciate its presence.
As before the rear camera is 5Mp, here with a f2.2 aperture, 4x digital zoom and several features such as a burst mode, auto HDR, tap to focus and quick capture. HD (720p) video is supported at 30fps, and there’s also a slo-mo video mode. There’s no LED flash, which is not at all unusual for a budget phone, but it’s a pain if you were hoping to use your phone as a torch.
The results are very much the same as we saw from the original Moto E. Images are generally well exposed, but lack detail and reveal heavy-handed compression when you zoom in and look closely. They’re fine for sharing online, but won’t produce good enlargements for printing to put on the wall.
Here’s our usual shot of St Pancras. (All are original 5Mp photos from the phone – unedited and not resized.)
Video is understandably shaky since there’s no stabilisation. However, it is captured in HD now – 1280×720 as opposed to the 854×480 of the old Moto E. It is much better than the old phone and colours are decent enough, but detail is lacking compared to the best smartphone video (possibly due to compression again) and it isn’t particularly sharp, either:
Motorola Moto E 4G / New Moto E review: ConnectivityHere’s the key change in the new Moto E: for an extra £20 over the original it includes 4G connectivity, operating on LTE bands 1, 3, 7 and 20. You can learn more about 4G in our complete guide to 4G, but suffice to say it is the fastest mobile data standard, and both network coverage and pricing within the UK is getting better all the time.
Other connectivity specs remain unchanged, and the new Moto E 4G features Bluetooth 4.0 LE, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and GPS.
Motorola Moto E 4G / New Moto E review: SoftwareWhereas the original Moto E ran Android KitKat, the new Moto E 4G has Lollipop version 5.0 out of the box. Amazingly, for such a cheap phone, Motorola is also guaranteeing an upgrade to the next version of Android. Read more about Android M
It’s a reasonably plain implementation of Lollipop, but with some unique Moto software features. It can show notifications without waking the screen, and monitor your activity to create useful new features and functions. Motorola Assist keeps your screen off while you sleep or in a meeting, plus there’s the double-twist gesture we mentioned earlier to launch the camera. Motorola Migrate also features, easing the transition from your old phone, and there’s Motorola Alert, which can share your location with your friends and family.
Motorola Moto E 4G / New Moto E review: Battery lifeMotorola has also upgraded the Moto E’s battery. Whereas before it was fitted with a 1980mAh battery it now has 2390mAh. That’s perhaps not a big a jump as it sounds, given the faster hardware, although Android Lollipop *should* be more efficient than KitKat.
We’ve not had this phone long enough to thoroughly test the battery, but early indications are very good, and we’re sure the ‘E will last a full day with mixed use, just as Motorola claims.
