Windows 8 is doing quite a job of alienating longtime Windows users. No more Start button, but a whole Start screen full of distracting live tiles; a double interface (Desktop and “Modern”); low information density on Modern apps; and the list goes on. For many companies, this isn’t a disaster but a golden opportunity: The market is full of applications rushing to fix Windows 8, from Stardock’s Start8 and Decor8, through open-source Classic Shell, through $5 utility RetroUI. Although RetroUI 3.1.1 does offer an interesting feature for running Modern apps in a window, awkward implementation keeps it from being the cure-all it could be. In fact, the current version brings its own headaches.
Much like Windows 8, RetroUI is bisected into two distinct parts that bear almost no relation to each other: a Start menu replacement, and an innovative feature called Enforce. The Start menu replacement is hardly unique, but Enforce does something I’ve never seen before: It lets you run Modern apps in a window. If you’ve used Windows 8 for any length of time, you probably realize how exciting that is. RetroUI’s search is significantly slower than Classic Shell’s, and you can’t use arrow keys to navigate results.
Enforce couldn’t be simpler to use. It actually works like Windows 8 should have worked in the first place, if you ask me. With RetroUI installed, Modern apps just start in a maximized window. You can then resize that window, drag it around, and generally work with it like you would with any other windows.
There are a few caveats and oddities remaining: It won’t show up on your taskbar, and you won’t be able to have two Modern apps on-screen at the same time. You can have two Modern apps open at the same time and switch between them using Alt+Tab, but you won’t see them both on the screen simultaneously. That’s sometimes frustrating, because even the default full-screen Modern interface lets you have two applications on-screen concurrently (a primary app taking up most of the space, and a secondary one taking up a vertical on the side). And Modern apps don’t show up on the taskbar, even when they’re running in a window.
By default, RetroUI takes over several function keys: F3, F4, F7, F8, and F9. This means if you do anything with these keys (such as use F7 to create a new folder in Total Commander), you’ll no longer be able to do it, at least until you visit RetroUI’s Settings screen and disable this behavior.

RetroUI’s Start menu suffers some unfortunate quirks: For example, its find-as-you-type feature is very slow compared to competitor Classic Shell, and you can’t use the arrow keys to navigate results.
RetroUI looks good on paper, but in its current form, it fails to deliver a satisfying experience. Rather than soothe Windows 8 frustrations, it only adds to them. If you’re looking to use Windows 8 with fewer annoyances, you would do well to save $5 and try the free and effective Classic Shell with its powerful Start menu replacement.

11 Winning Alternatives To Windows 8’S Built
Windows 8 comes preloaded with plenty of apps for basic productivity and entertainment, but they’re not necessarily the best you can do. We’ve already mentioned the apps you should download first, but now we want to share some third-party apps that you might like more than what Microsoft includes in its basic Windows 8 installation.
None of the following apps is perfect, but the same holds true for the apps built directly into Windows 8—hence the point of this article in the first place.
PeoplePart contacts list, part social media hub, Microsoft’s People app is a central bucket for all the personal associations you make via email, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Although this built-in app shares Facebook and Twitter updates, it’s confusing in the way it jumbles together all your services.
Likewise, People is definitely not a worthy Twitter client. And no worthy Twitter clients are available in the Windows Store yet. An official Twitter app is in the works; but until it arrives, we’ll all have to make do with third-party alternatives.
Luckily, we have FlipToast, an app that commingles Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter in a relatively easy-to-use interface. Among other features, FlipToast allows you to like, tweet, retweet, share, favorite, and post to the four services it supports. Its interface isn’t immediately intuitive; but once you start using it, you’ll probably find it more hospitable than the People app. And just to make sure you stay a good friend, FlipToast even has a birthday-reminder tool. You can find FlipToast on the Windows Store for free.
FlipToast makes social networking simple and concise.
VideoMicrosoft’s Video app has a split personality. It’s a storefront for purchasing the latest movies and TV episodes, as well a video player for your own personal content. Unfortunately, when we tried it, shilling commercial content seemed to take precedence, leaving many PCWorld editors wishing for a deeper, more robust video-player app.
PressPlay offers easy-to-use controls and file browsing.
MessagingMicrosoft’s Messaging app lets you quickly chat with anyone in your contacts or Facebook list, and it even supports video chat. That’s great for communicating with the friends you have on those networks, but you’ll probably want to chat with people on myriad other services too.
IM+ facilitates messaging through nearly every imaginable service, from Facebook to ICQ. It supports photo sharing, text messaging, and multiple accounts per service, making for the most comprehensive messaging app we could find on the Windows Store, all for free.
IM+ is the go-to place for any messaging needs.
CalendarThe built-in Calendar app does exactly what you’d think it would, but not much more. You can check the day’s events, add an event with reminder options, and…that’s about it. You can use Microsoft’s app to sync up your own personal Google calendar, but you’re out of luck if you need to sync Google calendars that have been shared with you.
That’s why, as with the Mail app (see below), we recommend using the tried-and-true Google calendar as the alternative. You have to access it via your browser, of course, but you’ll be able to see all your schedules at once without worrying about hacking the app. And yes, you can put Google Calendar on your Start screen: Just pin it to Start as you would any other URL, and pretend that it’s an app.
We still love Google’s calendar.
SkyDriveMicrosoft’s cloud-storage service boasts hooks into nearly every device within the new Windows ecosystem and beyond. You can access SkyDrive file storage on a Windows desktop, a Mac, a Windows 8 tablet, a Windows Phone, and even iOS and Android devices. SkyDrive is also integrated into various Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 apps, granting you quick cloud access and sharing when you need it the most. In fact, the new Web-app version of Microsoft Office is reason alone to love SkyDrive.
Yes, SkyDrive is fantastic—but it doesn’t sync with Dropbox, the once de facto leader in cloud storage.

Photos
Albums HD offers a great way to “save your memories in one place.” The app allows you to store your photos in customizable albums and then share them via slideshows that sport different transition effects. It even supports a Live Tile option so that you can view your photos from the Start screen. Albums HD is $1.49 on the Windows Store. AlbumsHD provides some organization to your photos, and cool slideshow features.
MusicLike the Video app, the Music app allows you to enjoy your music, as well as to preview and purchase all the newest and best music that Xbox Music features.
But if you’re looking for an inclusive music player that doesn’t try to sell you music (and if you’re not a fan of iTunes), check out MusicBee, a powerful, free program for any music lover. Unfortunately, no new Windows Store app is available for it yet, but you can install the program just as you would any other Windows program (assuming that you don’t have a Windows RT device, of course). MusicBee sports nifty tools for song tagging, as well as for finding local shows and upcoming music releases. You’ll also find a minimized music player, and various themes and skins.

What Are Windows Runtime Errors And How Do You Fix Them?
Runtime errors in Windows are as old as the operating system itself. It’s a common error message to see when an app crashes, but what exactly is a runtime error, and what can you do about it?
Software development is complex, and modern applications rely on sophisticated libraries and supporting data to work as expected. This guide will help you understand why runtime errors happen and how to minimize them.

What Is a Runtime Error?The term “runtime error” refers to any application error when a program is executed. In other words, it happens to a running program. This is in contrast to errors that happen when a program is compiling. Compilation is the process of taking programming code (the “source” code) and converting it to binary code that can be excited by the operating system. If any part of the source code is invalid, the compiler will stop and give an error message.
Runtime errors happen when the compiled executable encounters a situation where it doesn’t know what to do next or something interferes with its normal operation. At this point, it will throw in the towel and give a runtime error.
Different Types of Runtime ErrorBecause runtime errors are defined so broadly, troubleshooting them can be tricky. It helps to understand what common types of error you may encounter. The five error types below are not exhaustive but are the most likely culprits.
Logic ErrorsLogic errors happen when the computer literally encounters something that “does not compute.” It’s an output generated by the program’s code that produces an unexpected result, sometimes an impossible one, because the logic of the code doesn’t track or the programmers did not anticipate a specific set of conditions or inputs.
Memory LeaksA memory leak happens when a program doesn’t give back memory that it requested after it no longer needs it. Over time memory leaks leave fewer and fewer resources for other programs, leading to degraded performance and, eventually, runtime errors. This is an interesting one because the software that reports a runtime error is usually not the one with a memory leak. It’s just a victim of the leak.
Dividing by ZeroIt’s impossible to divide by zero, so when your computer tries to, it implodes into a black hole. Just kidding! It will crash the program with a runtime error along the lines of “cannot divide by zero.”
Undefined ObjectsThis error is usually associated with Java and JavaScript, where variables that have not been assigned a value or haven’t been declared. In other words, there’s no data in a variable, or the code refers to a variable that doesn’t exist. Basically, the programmer messed up in some way.
IO ErrorsIO or Input/Output errors happen when a program tries to read or write data from a storage device and fails. This can be for various reasons, from a disconnected drive to a faulty hard drive or USB hardware. Scratched optical discs are another common cause of IO errors.
How to Fix Runtime ErrorsSo you’ve encountered a runtime error, and it’s bumming you out because you’re trying to get things done. While we’ve mentioned above that runtime errors come in different varieties, and specific errors may clue you into which type, there are some general fixes that may work regardless of the details.
Reboot Your ComputerRebooting your computer may solve memory leak issues or clear out any temporary data caches or other working data that may have caused a program to stop. If an issue goes away after a reboot, it doesn’t help clear up the cause, but for occasional problems, a restart is a fast solution to try.
Update The ApplicationMore often than not, runtime errors in software result from bugs in the software itself. Once a software developer is aware of these bugs, they’ll usually fix the problem and release an update for the application. So one of the first things you should do is check whether an update for your software is available.
Perhaps more importantly, when you encounter a Windows runtime error, you should report it to the developers. Sometimes there’s a reporting button alongside the error message; at other times you may have to take a screenshot or write down an error code and then get in touch via email or social media. Reporting a new bug can speed up getting a fix.
Update WindowsRuntime errors can also be due to bugs or other issues in Microsoft Windows itself, which are often rectified in Windows updates. Small issues are usually addressed in “hotfixes” which are small updates that fix specific urgent problems.
Alternatively, if a program has started giving runtime errors shortly after a Windows update, you may want to delete the last update until the developers update their software.
Update Your Outdated DriversDrivers are software that let the operating system control your hardware, such as the display adapter (AKA your graphics card). New software or newly-updated software may rely on features that only exist in the latest version of the driver, so when you update drivers for your computer components, you might fix hardware-related runtime errors.
Reinstall or Repair The ApplicationRuntime errors can be the result of corrupted application files or data. So when the program executable tries to access data it needs to work, it runs into errors because that data is wrong or missing.
By uninstalling the application and reinstalling it, you can overwrite that corrupt data with a fresh copy. You may not have to uninstall the application first. Many apps will offer a “repair” or “verify” option when you either run the installer again or try to uninstall them from the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel.
Close All Other AppsRuntime errors that are caused by memory leaks or because a particular app needs more memory than is available can be mitigated by closing any nonessential programs that are open. You may also want to adjust the size of your swap file, to create a little more breathing room for apps that don’t fit into RAM.
Run Windows in Safe Mode or Perform a Clean BootIf you suspect the runtime errors that you’re experiencing are the result of drivers or other software applications in the background, you can use either Safe Mode or a clean boot to confirm it.
A clean boot is almost the opposite of Safe Mode. Rather than loading a minimal operating system, Windows disables all third-party startup software. If a clean boot resolves the runtime error, it’s likely a third-party app that needs to be disabled, updated, or replaced. Refer to our guide on how to perform a clean boot.
Update Runtime ComponentsSoftware often depends on shared software libraries and standard software runtime components. If these are not installed, are corrupted, or are the wrong version it can cause issues. Examples of such runtime components include the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable package.
You can download the required VC++ redistributable from the Microsoft website, but it’s usually included with the software that needs it. So reinstalling or repairing the app should also restore the Visual C++ runtime library. This is one of the easiest runtime component problems to identify, because the runtime error message will usually specify that it’s a “C++ runtime error.”
Check For Corrupt FilesData corruption happens when the ones and zeros that make up a file are damaged or overwritten for some reason. Damage to system or application files can lead to unexpected runtime errors.
You can run the Windows System File Checker (SFC) to check and repair damage to system files. For applications, most of the time the installer will have a “repair” option if you run it without uninstalling the app first. With software clients such as Steam, you can also use the “verify” option on your games to check that the files are still whole.
Perform a Malware ScanMany types of malware inject themselves into running code, corrupt data files, or alter executable files. All of which can lead to runtime errors. To rule out malware as the reason you’re getting errors, run a scan using your favorite antivirus or antimalware software.
Perform A Memory TestBefore your running software gets to your CPU for processing, it stops over in your RAM. If your RAM is faulty, this may cause runtime errors that are hard to track down. Run a memory test and make sure it’s not an issue with bits getting flipped in your memory modules!

And today, we’re going to review ChaCha for Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows RT, an application that’s here to provide free answers to your questions. If you’ve been using the ChaCha website, then this new application for Windows 10, Windows 8/RT device will be a welcome addition.
Some might think – why use ChaCha when you have Google at your hands? Well, the answer is simple – Google might not deliver such “personal” results as the ChaCha application does. There are more than 2 billion questions/answers in their database and they even claim that it’s the biggest Q&A database in the world. Let’s see how the app behaves in Windows 10. Windows 8.
ChaCha in Windows 10, Windows 8To remind you once more, ChaCha is also a search engine, but it’s human-guided, so this means that the answers are edited and made perfect for you. When you first open up the application, it will first display a window like the one above. The design of the application is well-suited for Windows 10, Windows 8 and RT devices, unlike other failures (hear that, BBC?). There are three big categories: Recent Questions, Featured Questions and Gallery.
Ask ChaCha anythingBesides the three big categories, there is a left column where you have the following: Ask ChaCha, MyAnswers, NearMe. And here comes the feature that I love the most – Ask ChaCha. Asking ChaCha is being done, once more, through the know-and-do-it-all Charms bar.
You just type in what is it that you’re curious about that ChaCha will start searching that for you! You’ll be given the answer to your question and, also, there will be displayed related questions that might further interest you. The Gallery is like an informative wiki section, with interesting articles on just about anything.
From what I saw, ChaCha use its own database and also the one of WolframAlpha. In the MyAnswers category, you can see all the answers to the questions you’ve asked. Also, there’s a NearMe section that displays question asked by person leaving near you but it will show more results for USA residents. I found the ChaCha app for Windows 10, Windows 8 to be pretty fast, but that’s also according to your Internet speed. I hope the ChaCha Windows 10, Windows 8 app will manage to help you.
ChaCha guide was discontinued in late 2023 due to lack of funds. However 2.0.15 version of the app is still available in Windows Store and you can easily download and try it. This version works on both Windows 8 and 10. You can ask questions in snap mode and it allows you to share your answers on different social media.

8 Ways To Fix Attempted_Write_To_Readonly_Memory Bsod Error
The Attempted_Write_to_Readonly_Memory Blue screen error or the error code 0x000000BE is not quite common. It occurs when some drivers or programs tend to write on a restricted memory section.
When you see this error on your PC, it is usually due to hardware issues, especially the memory. However, the unsigned, incompatible, corrupted, or outdated drivers can equally be the culprit here.
Thus, we have compiled a list of workable fixes that will eliminate this problem from your PC.
You will have to boot into the safe mode if your PC does not boot after the BSOD. Here is the way to do it.
Let’s look at the fixes to solve the issue now.
Despite the same error code, the Attempted Write to Readonly Memory BSOD can occur due to errors in different files and processes. Ntfs.sys, iusb3hub.sys, usb80236.sys, etc., are a few of them.
So, pinpointing the particular cause can help solve the problem much more easily. Let’s see how you can do it.
Look into the Minidump FilesWindows collects the error details during the bug check and stores them in dump files. You can go through the dump files to find the file name that failed, interfered, or was corrupted.
You will need a separate program called WinDbg by Microsoft to open the minidump file. Let’s see the way to do it.
After you find the cause and learn about its details, you can proceed by repairing, removing the file, or stopping the tasks and processes. See if the BSOD is fixed then.
Run Driver VerifierIf the minidump file did not direct towards the particular issue, you could run the driver verifier to find the culprit. Most of the time, the BSOD is caused by improperly programmed, corrupted, or incompatible drivers.
Driver verifier causes the drivers to stress out till they fail by running several tests and displays the error Driver_Verifier_Violation_Detected. Then, you can look into the dump file and rectify the issue.
Back up your files as the Driver verifier itself causes a BSOD, and it may continue in a loop preventing your system from booting.
Go through the dump files by following the steps in the earlier section. You can then proceed to solve the error with the particular driver.

Perform a Clean BootSometimes the problem may not be the driver and just the third-party applications and services. So, you need to figure out which one of them is causing the issue by performing a clean boot and running each one at a time.
Let’s go through the process.
If the Blue screen error does not appear for a while, then those programs may have caused the issue earlier. Press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open Task manager and run those programs one by one. Find the one that causes the BSOD again and uninstall it.
As we mentioned earlier, the drivers, especially the graphics, network, and USB drivers, are the culprit most of the time. So, you should update all the drivers in your system. If the driver verifier found the particular one, you can update that driver and see if it solves the issue.
Let’s see how you can do it.
Sometimes, updating it may not always solve the problem. In such cases, you can uninstall the driver.
See if the BSOD still appears.
XMP or Extreme Memory Profile helps run your memory at its fastest speed to improve the system’s performance. It is similar to overclocking your CPU and GPU, i,e, running them at a speed higher than the designated value.
Overclocking the CPU and GPU and enabling the XMP do improve the performance but apply a significant load on the hardware as well. The power management on these components can be abnormal, causing them to malfunction.
You should disable these features to solve the issue. Let’s see how you can do it.
If you used some applications to overclock your hardware, you could uninstall that particular program to revert the settings. See if the BSOD appears again.
Most Antiviruses work at the kernel level to prevent malware infection. But, sometimes, the system prevents writing at the kernel level when the antivirus attempts to do it. As a result, your system will start the bug check and display BSOD. In addition to this, antiviruses can block some system services and programs.
You can update the antivirus program and see if it solves the issues. If it does, then you will have to remove the antivirus. The method to remove antiviruses is program-specific. You can remove most of them by uninstalling them from their own interface.
See whether the BSOD is still there after removing the antivirus.
If your system’s memory has some error, then the PC may attempt to write to a read-only segment. You should perform a detailed inspection of your RAM. Let’s see the ways to do it.

2. The marketing technology disconnectThe oft-discussed “battle” between Marketing and IT is still raging on to this day, from ownership to operation. While marketing continues to own much of the digital debate (around 49% of decisions are made solely by marketing), a greater degree of collaboration is required to be a success.
