Network neutrality rules adopted by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission could lead to the loss of more than 340,000 jobs in the broadband industry over the next 10 years, with few offsetting Web content jobs, according to a new study funded by a group opposed to the proposed rules.
Bazelon predicted that spending in the broadband industry would decrease by US$5 billion in 2011 if the FCC passes formal net neutrality rules, with the number growing in subsequent years.
“The FCC should be careful in developing any net neutrality rules, to not undermine its own goals of promoting broadband and employment,” Bazelon said during a press conference Friday.Broadband Called Strong
Broadband deployment in the U.S. is a “success story,” the study said. About 95 percent of U.S. residents have fixed broadband available, and 98 percent have 3G mobile broadband available, the study said.

The study is the latest of several weighing in on the economic impact of net neutrality rules, which are now being considered by the FCC. A study released in January by the Institute for Policy Integrity at the New York University School of Law suggested net neutrality rules would preserve the investments of Web content producers such as newspapers and bloggers. Just this Thursday, the Phoenix Center for Advanced Legal and Economic Public Policy Studies, a free-market think tank, released several studies questioning the economic benefits of net neutrality rules.
“Wireless would be disproportionately impacted, because it represents the majority of [broadband] growth over the next decade,” Bazelon said.
“Different content might be better under a net neutrality regulatory regime, but there’s no theoretical reason to believe there will be more content or more valued content,” Bazelon said. “The losses in the broadband sector are large, creating a large hurdle that the content sector would have to overcome.”Research Challenged
“Judging by the press release, Coleman Bazelon has delivered a predictable outcome,” Schwartzman said.
The study ignores large telecom profits in recent years, when AT&T was required by federal regulators to accept net neutrality rules as part of its merger with BellSouth, said Derek Turner, research director with Free Press, also a media reform group.
Telecom carriers have been cutting jobs for years, independent of what’s been going on with net neutrality regulations, Turner added. He noted that Verizon officials said Thursday they planned additional job cuts beyond an earlier announcement that they planned to cut 13,000 jobs this year.
The assertion that net neutrality will lead to job cuts “is plainly unsupported by the facts, and actually contradicts what unfortunately has become the ISP industry’s default behavior, as was demonstrated by Verizon yesterday,” Turner said. “In this consolidated industry, as revenues rise, jobs are cut.”
To predict the impact of net neutrality regulations, Bazelon looked at bidding in the C block in the 2008 auction of the 700MHz wireless spectrum at the FCC. The FCC placed net neutrality rules on that block of spectrum, and it sold at a discount compared to other blocks, he said.
But the study fails to measure the number of other jobs that will be created through net neutrality rules, Turner said.
“With network neutrality, content innovation will prosper, furthering demand for high-capacity, ubiquitous Internet access, which in turn will stimulate ISP investment and increase the need for and the value of more jobs,” he said. “But without network neutrality, ISPs will be incentivized to reduce network investments and jobs, in order to make congestion the norm.”

Net Neutrality is a mess: We can’t even decide what the Internet is
The internet as we know it is in peril. Verizon’s victory in the court of appeal this week, seeing the FCC’s attempts to regulate broadband providers in the name of Net Neutrality defeated, has the potential to change how we access the internet and web services like Netflix, Hulu, and others more fundamentally than 2013’s SOPA threatened to. In question isn’t whether internet access should be a free-for-all, but what it is fundamentally, legally classified as, and who therefore has control over what gets shuttled through: Verizon and the broadband providers, in control of the “pipes”, or the FCC as protector of infrastructure that uses public rights of way. For all both sides are claiming some degree of victory this week, we’re still no closer to settling that fundamental question.
The position that leaves us in is confusing. The appeals court hasn’t said that the FCC has no place in deciding broadband policy, and in fact recognizes the Commission’s fears that “broadband providers may be motivated to discriminate against and among edge providers.” What it has said is that the way the FCC was trying to go about doing that was overstepping the mark in terms of federal law.
Is there a problem if Net Neutrality fails? Verizon, Comcast, and other broadband providers all insist that, if anything, the online experience for consumers could be better: not to mention fairer for all involved, no matter which side of the pipe they sit on.
There’s an argument to be made there, perhaps: anyone who has cursed YouTube for buffering spoiling their video watching, or found Spotify streaming to be glitchy and error-prone might welcome a more stable, predictable service.
That’s before you consider the fact that I’m a content producer myself. Could there come a day where SlashGear would have to stump up a fee if it wanted to compete on delivery speed to readers with, say, AOL or SB Nation owned properties?
As an internet user, meanwhile, the dearth of alternative options for getting online means that the opportunities to actually jump ship between providers – voting with my dollars, just as the broadband companies say should be the case – are rare or even non-existent. The cost of building out infrastructure, among other things, means that many areas have just one fixed broadband provider to “choose” from. In short, if you want to get online, there’s only really one place you can go to do that.
That promised choice, therefore, doesn’t really reflect the actual situation out in American towns and cities. The FCC has to share some blame in the whole situation itself, too; it pushed to exempt Verizon, AT&T, Comcast, and Time Warner Cable from the “common carriage” obligations that would have continued to define broadband infrastructure as something to which the public had a fundamental right of access.
In short, the appeals court this week said that the FCC can’t try to apply “common carrier” limits on something already deemed to be outside of that classification. The ball is back in the FCC’s hands as to whether it mounts another challenge; while a decision either way hasn’t been announced, Commission chairman Tom Wheeler did say the agency “is not going to abandon its responsibility to oversee that broadband networks operate in the public interest.”
President Obama too has waded in, reconfirming his own commitment to Net Neutrality. What’s yet to be demonstrated is how any of them will actually go about doing that defending, or enacting those responsibilities.
I want more stable broadband, and more reliable service. Yet I also want the freedom to use the services I choose without – at some point along the line – a surcharge being levied, one which either has to come out of my pocket or that of the company behind the service I’m using. The broadband providers arguments against Net Neutrality provisions sound a lot like they’re welcoming competition but only in terms of them themselves making more money; not keeping the internet a place of openness where bright new startups can flourish.
Why Steve Jobs’ Cup of Coffee Would Go for Much More Than Tim Cook’s
If you’re thirsty, you can grab a cup of Joe with Apple CEO Tim Cook and talk to him about, well, just about anything.Right now, Cook is auctioning off the amount of time it takes to sip a cup of coffee to one lucky (and rich) fan. As of this writing, the bid stands at $190,000, even though its estimated value is $50,000. And since there are nearly three weeks left to bid, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if that figure runs much, much higher.
But as I look at the bids rising and people lining up for the opportunity to talk to Cook, I can’t help but wonder what would happen if Steve Jobs were alive and offering the same deal for charity. And if I’m right, there’s a good chance that the cup of coffee Steve Jobs would be talking over would cost a bit more than Cook’s.

Let’s face it – Tim Cook isn’t the most dynamic person in the world. He’s undoubtedly one of the most successful people in the technology industry and if anything, he knows how to run a truly massive company. But Cook is not Steve Jobs. More importantly, Cook hasn’t elevated himself to the level of Superman within the technology industry.
The issue for Tim Cook is that he’s viewed by some as simply riding the wave that Steve Jobs created. And with reports that Jobs himself left a roadmap of products for Apple before he died, there are some who believe that Cook is only doing what he was told to do a couple of years ago. In other words, he doesn’t get much respect, even though he truly deserves it.
Steve Jobs, meanwhile, had God-like status among technology enthusiasts. When he walked on stage, it didn’t take long for the standing ovation to commence and tech lovers around the world to start to drool. And when he started speaking, Jobs had the unique ability to captivate an audience and make them truly believe that whatever it was that he pulled out of his pocket was special.

More importantly, Jobs was highly respected among businesspeople – the most likely group to win the Tim Cook bid. Jobs was able to turn around a dying company and turn it into the world’s largest. Tim Cook hasn’t achieved that just yet. And among executives, he’s not at the same level as his predecessor.
So, I ask you: how much would a cup of coffee with Steve Jobs actually cost? If I were a betting man, I’d say that it would hit $500,000 or more. Sure, it’s high, but we’re talking about the one man in the history of the technology industry that was able to turn the head of nearly everyone around the world. And some people would have given much more than a bundle of cash to sit next to him at a table.
Of course, this is not to say that Tim Cook is not worth having a discussion with or doing a good thing by offering his time. But let’s face it: Tim Cook isn’t Steve Jobs. And despite his best efforts, he never will be.

Metaverse designer: These professionals will be responsible for creating the look and feel of the metaverse, including everything from the appearance of virtual spaces to the avatars that users will use to represent themselves.
Metaverse content creator: This could include a wide range of roles, such as 3D modelers, animators, and writers, who will create the various forms of media and experiences that will be available within the metaverse.
Metaverse community manager: These individuals will be responsible for managing and moderating online communities within the metaverse, ensuring that they are welcoming and safe for all users.
Metaverse customer support: As with any online platform, there will be a need for customer support personnel to help users with issues and answer their questions.
Metaverse entrepreneurs: The metaverse will provide a new platform for entrepreneurs to start businesses and offer services. These could include everything from virtual clothing stores to virtual event spaces.
But there’ll also be a great array of traditional roles that will migrate to the metaverse opening up incredible opportunities without the restraint of the physical world. Imagine a virtual reality-based ecosystem that includes job roles such as:
Metaverse therapist: As the metaverse becomes more realistic and immersive, it is possible that it could be used as a tool for therapy and rehabilitation. VR therapists would work with clients in virtual environments to help them overcome various mental and physical challenges that they’re dealing with in the real world.
Metaverse event planner: The metaverse could provide a new platform for hosting events, such as concerts, conferences, or trade shows. metaverse event planners would be responsible for organizing and coordinating these events, including booking venues, arranging logistics, and promoting the event.
Metaverse personal trainer: It may be possible for people to work with metaverse personal trainers to get in shape, either by participating in metaverse workouts or by using it to visualize and practice proper form for various exercises.
Metaverse language tutor: The metaverse could provide a new platform for language education, allowing people to immerse themselves in virtual environments where they can practice their language skills with native speakers. These language tutors would be responsible for designing and leading these language learning experiences as you might expect a traditional teacher to do so.
Metaverse interior designer: People may be able to use metaverse to design and visualize the interior of their homes or offices, and metaverse interior designers could help them to do so. These professionals would be responsible for creating 3D models of the spaces and assisting with the selection of furniture and other elements. These same individuals could help design interiors for buildings within the metaverse itself working with graphic and 3D designers.Key Takeaways
We’re some distance from metaverse jobs replacing traditional jobs, and the physical world isn’t going anywhere, but it’s exciting to think about what roles might exist related to the metaverse by 2030. That’s only 7 years away. Add 5 more years to that and we’re at the same point in time that “I, Robot” was set… let that sink in.
More and more roles will begin to appear related to the creation of the metaverse. These will appear first before traditional roles within the metaverse grow in popularity.

Despite frequently hopping between some of the best wireless earbuds, I still don’t feel like I’ve found my perfect pair. It’s not that any models I’ve used are bad in their own right. The Oneplus Buds Pro aren’t the best all-around headphones on the market. They’re comfortable but don’t form a particularly strong seal in my ears. They don’t boast the most impressive sound quality, either. Nor do they benefit from superior ANC or transparency capabilities. Their single high-quality Bluetooth codec, LHDC, also leaves audiophiles wanting. It’s not hosted by most phones, so its usefulness is limited from the get-go. At first glance, there’s nothing particularly special to brag about.
And yet, there is a secret hidden gem to be found here: squeeze controls. Honestly, I can’t help but love them. The definitive action of squeezing the earbud stem leaves little room for confusion. You can also find this brilliant idea on the Apple AirPods Pro, Nothing Ear Stick, and the new OnePlus Buds Pro 2.
Samsung’s ANC keeps my head voice singing

Let’s face it; the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro and Buds 2 Pro are champions when it comes to noise cancelation, and I’d pinch it for my ultimate pair of earbuds any day of the week. They easily outmatch the capabilities of the OnePlus Buds Pro, Nothing Ear 1, and Sony LinkBuds WF-L900 I’ve been using. Not only is the ANC excellent, but the earbuds are large enough to form a good seal. That means my music is isolated from external environmental sounds. I’ve worn these buds on the London Underground and barely noticed when a train pulls into the station. You could argue they’re almost too good.
Nothing fits better than Nothing Ear 1

I’ll admit, I suffer from oddly-shaped left and right ear canals. This became apparent to me while wearing the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro earbuds. Far too often, the left earbud kept falling out of my ear. At first, I thought I hadn’t secured it in the right place. But then I noticed discomfort with other earbuds. It didn’t matter whether I was wearing the OnePlus Buds Pro or the LinkBuds WF-L900 earbuds. The left earbud always felt like it was seconds away from falling out. Thankfully, changing ear tips helps. But there’s one earbud I’ve never had to consider changing ear tips for: Nothing Ear 1. My colleagues agree too; the Nothing Ear 1 offer a level of comfort that others should strive to emulate.
Sony’s Headphones app reigns supreme

If you’ve ever worn Sony LinkBuds WF-L900, it probably wouldn’t shock you that I’m not their biggest cheerleader. The sound quality lacks bass, they aren’t very comfortable, and the absence of ANC is a huge oversight. Listening to music outside is a pain, as unwanted sound pours through the doughnut-shaped hole in their design. Unless you’re sat alone at home or out running on busy streets, there isn’t a particularly good environment for these buds. It may sound harsh, but there’s a reason ANC technology is so sought after. Thankfully, the Sony WF-1000XM4 are much better.
Still, my experience with these earbuds revealed that Sony absolutely nails the accessibility and customization options that are so often overlooked by others. We should absolutely absorb these into our Frankenstein’s earbuds too.

I can’t help thinking there’s an incredible set of earbuds waiting to be made here. One that hosts squeeze controls, superior ANC, long-lasting comfort, and a solid companion app. Each of them alone are great features to have, so why not put them all together? Combined, they’d make for the ultimate set of earbuds. If a headphone manufacturer ever makes them, I’ll be first in the queue.
But as much as I would love Frankenstein to stitch all of these features together, one, in particular, takes precedence for me. Above all else, I can’t ignore the importance of a comfortable fit. It’s impossible to truly enjoy superior ANC, squeeze controls, and impressive phone applications when your earbuds give you grief.
