OpenCAPI Consortium’s connector specification will bring significant bandwidth improvements inside computers. OpenCAPI, announced Friday, will link storage, memory, GPUs, and CPUs, much like PCI-Express 3.0, but will be 10 times faster with data speeds of 150GBps (gigabytes per second).

Memory, storage, and GPUs will keep getting faster, and OpenCAPI will keep computers ready for those technologies, Brad McCredie, an IBM fellow, said in an interview.

Graphics processors are now handling demanding applications like virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and complex scientific calculations. Also in the wings are superfast technologies like 3D Xpoint, a new type of storage and memory technology that can be 10 times faster than SSDs and 10 times denser than DRAM.

Servers and supercomputers will be the first to get OpenCAPI slots. The technology could trickle down to PCs in the coming years.

The first OpenCAPI ports will be on IBM’s Power9 servers, which are due next year. Google and Rackspace are also putting the OpenCAPI port on their Zaius Power9 server. 

But don’t expect OpenCAPI immediately in mainstream PCs or servers, most of which run on x86 chips from Intel and AMD. AMD, for now, isn’t targeting OpenCAPI at desktops and won’t be putting the ports in x86 servers, a spokesman said.

A second consortium, called Gen-Z, announced a new protocol focused on increasing data transfer speeds mostly between computers, but also inside of them when needed. The protocol, announced earlier this week, will initially be targeted at servers but could bring fundamental changes to the way computers are built.

The consortium boasts big names including Samsung, Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, AMD, ARM, and Micron.

Right now, computers come with memory, storage, and processors in one box. But the specification from Gen-Z—which is focused heavily on memory and storage—could potentially decouple all of those units into separate boxes, establishing a peer-to-peer connection between all of them.

Larger pools of storage, memory, and processing technologies can be crammed in the dedicated boxes, and Gen-Z could be particularly useful for server installations. Gen-Z is designed to link large pools of memory and storage with processors like CPUs and GPUs in a data center, said Robert Hormuth, vice president and server chief technology officer at Dell EMC.

Having memory, storage, and processing in discrete boxes will be beneficial for applications like the SAP HANA relational database, which is dedicated to in-memory processing. Most servers max out at 48TB of DRAM, but a decoupled memory unit will give SAP HANA more RAM to operate.

But there are challenges. The decoupled units need to handshake in real time and work together on protocol support and load balancing. Those functions have been perfected in today’s servers with integrated memory and storage.

Gen-Z is generally a point-to-point connector for storage and memory at the rack level, but it can be used inside server racks. Gen-Z is not intended to replace existing memory or storage buses in servers, Hormuth said.

OpenCAPI and Gen-Z claim their protocols are open for every hardware maker to adopt. However, there will be challenges in pushing these interconnects to servers.

For one, the server market is dominated by x86 chips from Intel, which isn’t a member of either of the new consortia. Without support from Intel, the new protocols and interconnects could struggle.

3. Game not launching

Some Windows 10 users stated that when they try to open the game nothing happens, and only a white field appears in the middle of the screen. This is a visual bug and it’s related to the graphics drivers.

If you’re in the same boat, make sure you have DirectX 11 on your PC and update your GPU drivers. This solved the problem for many.

This happens with V-Sync on and in fullscreen. It seems to have no effect on windowed mode.

How To Back Up Your Data When Your Windows Pc Won’t Boot

Learning to back up data without booting Windows is a valuable skill. For one thing, you never know when your Windows computer is going to crash. What’s worse? Your PC might be kaput when you need it the most. Ouch!

Avoid getting locked out of your precious data; learn this valuable skill – back up your data without booting Windows at all.

1. Prepare Your Tool

Before we can do the backup, we need a set of programs that will help you access your old files. One of these programs is an operating system that you can boot from the USB drive. Any lightweight and simple Linux distro will do the job here.

Get a flash drive with at least 4GB of memory space.

Next, you will need an external hard drive with enough space to store the backup of your files.

2. Create Your Bootable USB Drive

The Linux distro that we are using for this job is Puppy Linux. It is very light at under 250MB.

1. Download Puppy Linux ISO. Make sure to select 32-bit if you are unsure of your PC architecture.

2. Download Rufus USB tool and install it on a working Windows computer. (You can just run it if you have downloaded the portable version.)

3. Plug your USB drive to the working PC.

5. On the start page there are a couple of settings you need to do. First, select your flash storage in the first menu. Don’t tamper with the remaining parameters.

Wait until the Rufus tool shows “READY.” Now your bootable USB drive is ready.

3. Run The Bootable Media on Your Affected PC

1. Eject your bootable USB drive from the working computer, and plug it into your computer with the faulty OS.

2. Turn on the computer and press the relevant shortcut key to enter the BIOS settings. (Different computers uses different buttons to enter the BIOS settings. It can be Esc or F10 or Del or F12; pick one that works for you.)

3. In the BIOS settings change the boot-up option to boot from the USB drive. (You might need to change the “Boot option” to “Legacy mode,” too, if it was using “UEFI.”) Save and exit.

4. The computer will now boot from the Puppy Linux USB drive. If successful, you should arrive at Puppy Linux’s desktop.

4. Back Up Your Data without Booting Windows

1. Examine the Home screen of Puppy Linux. At the bottom-left corner of the screen you will find some icons. These icons are the available storage and partitions on your hard drive. Your USB storage should also show up here.

4. Select your Windows username and open it. At this point all your previous files should be staring at you.

Now you have all your files back.

You shouldn’t have to lose all your files or send your computer in for repair when your Windows OS doesn’t cooperate. Take charge of your computer, and get your files back from your computer. Note that you may not be able to recover installed apps, but your documents are sure to be intact.

Google Details Enterprise Developer Push

SAN FRANCISCO — Google detailed its plans for enterprise developers and fleshed out its application strategy during the first day of its Google I/O conference.

A key part of that focused on App Engine for Business, a cloud-based, scalable developer environment hosted by Google (NASDAQ: GOOG). App Engine for Business is now available in a Preview Release that the company is encouraging enterprise customers to try, while the finished version is set for later this year.

In an on-stage demonstration during the morning keynote here at San Francisco’s Moscone Center, Google demonstrated how a developer could quickly create a cloud-based expense report application using less than 200 keystrokes. Google officials then showed how they could access and interact with the new application from both a mobile phone and an Apple iPad, though response time was slowed by subpar network performance in the packed hall. Google said over 5,000 developers are attending the sold-out I/O conference.

Matthew Glotzbach, director of enterprise products at Google, said the economies of scale Google has achieved among its many data centers enabled it to offer an aggressive pricing model for App Engine for Business, which starts at $8 per user and application/per month with a $1,000 cap per application regardless of the number of users.

“Our goal with the pricing wasn’t to be disruptive, but to offer enterprise customers a level of certainty and simplicity as to what their costs are going to be, which they don’t really have now,” Glotzbach told chúng tôi “Some smaller companies, working with a smaller number of users, might look at this and decide they can do better on price with [Amazon’s] EC2.”

Google and VMware are combining their respective tools, the SpringSource Tool Suite and Google’s Web Toolkit, to help developers build and deploy applications to Google App Engine for Business and other cloud platforms from VMware as well as other cloud infrastructures such as Amazon’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) EC2. The two partners also said they recognize that many companies have applications they’re not ready to deploy to the cloud, so the development system lets them also deploy on-premises.

Will HTML5 fragment?

While Google and VMware officials repeatedly touted the benefits of the open standards approach, Gartneranalyst Ken Dulaney questioned whether customers should be concerned that standards like HTML5 — which are key to the App Engine strategy — might fragment as Java has, causing incompatibilities.

Gundotra conceded there have been Java compatibility issues in mobile and in the past Unix suffered from the same issue with applications not able to run on different Unix systems. But he said the Web makes these concerns almost moot.

He said it was “pretty shocking” to see how quickly the major browser vendors have moved to make sure they’re compatible with HTML5.

“There’s a deep desire, the carrot, to get their browser adopted,” he said.

Mozilla Aids Ec Push Against Microsoft

The head of the Mozilla Foundation, the open source group responsible for the Firefox browser, offered the organization’s help to the European Commission (EC) on Friday in its latest antitrust case against Microsoft.

EC regulators informed Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) last month that a probe of its business behaviors found the Redmond giant has illegally tied the Internet Explorer (IE) browser to Windows since 1996.

Mitchell Baker, Mozilla’s chairperson, offered the organization’s expertise in a blog post. “I’ve been involved in building and shipping Web browsers continuously since before Microsoft started developing IE, and the damage Microsoft has done to competition, innovation, and the pace of the Web development itself is both glaring and ongoing,” Baker’s post says.

The EC – the European Union’s (EU) executive branch – has accepted Baker’s offer to participate as an interested third party, according to a report by the IDG News Service. A U.S.-based spokesperson for the EC could not verify that statement by publication time.

That Mozilla would decide to get involved shouldn’t surprise anyone, according to one long-time Microsoft watcher.

“It’s a lot like history repeating itself,” Tim Bajarin, president of Creative Strategies, told chúng tôi He noted that pioneering browser maker Netscape supported the U.S. Department of Justice antitrust case against Microsoft, and it makes sense from a competitive standpoint.

While she is proud of the impact that Firefox has had worldwide, though, Baker too sees Microsoft as a continuing threat.

“[A] significant part of the European Union citizens have opted to use Firefox. This does not mean Microsoft’s activities haven’t done significant damage, or aren’t still benefiting Microsoft in ways that reduce competition, choice and innovation,” Baker’s post says.

In fact, Firefox is doing quite well against IE. The latest worldwide browser share statistics from Net Applications show Microsoft’s share has slid a half a point to 67.6 percent in the past month. In terms of overall share, IE is followed by Firefox with 31.5 percent and Safari at 8.3 percent. Opera, by Net Applications’ reckoning, gets 0.7 percent.

Meanwhile, the At Internet Institute, a European organization, found that IE had a 65 percent usage rate in Europe in March 2008, down from 67.5 percent in October 2007. Firefox, by comparison, had a 28.8 percent share March 2008, up 0.8 points from January 2008.

In the European survey Opera finished in third place but significantly behind the others. Opera held 3.3 percent share in March 2008, a rise of 0.2 points in the previous six months.

Microsoft’s current problems with the EC’s competition directorate began in February 2008, when Norwegian browser maker Opera Software filed a formal complaint with the EC regarding IE bundled with Windows.

That led to the EC’s actions last month when it notified Microsoft that it found the company engaged in anticompetitive practices in bundling IE going back to at least 1996. Microsoft has said repeatedly that it will cooperate with the EC’s investigations.

When queried whether the company had a response to Baker’s post, a Microsoft spokesperson provided the same statement it released last month when it received the EC’s statement of objections.

Customers express their desire to purchase products and services from companies with sustainable practices, but they may not feel financial firms are providing that to them. For example, though consumers are looking to work with sustainable retail banks, in a McKinsey survey, consumers didn’t rate any bank highly on their green credentials. So, there is an opportunity for firms to increase their green efforts and then educate consumers so they are aware of the progress.

Making sustainable choices in sourcing technology can also help financial firms cut costs. Most payment cards are manufactured using polyvinyl chloride (PVC), derived from oil, and ultimately end up in a landfill.
