The Broad Museum by Diller Scofidio + Renfro in  Los Angeles, United States

The Broad is a new contemporary art museum founded by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles which opened in September of 2023. The museum offers free general admission. The museum is home to the 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection, which is among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide, and has launched an active program of rotating temporary exhibitions and innovative audience engagement.

The 120,000-square-footbuilding features two floors of gallery space and is the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library, which has actively loaned collection works to museums around the world since 1984. In its inaugural year, The Broad attracted triple the number of its projected visitors, and since opening, has welcomed more than 1.7 million visitors. Eli and Edythe Broad also built a 24,000-square-foot public plaza, added streetscape improvements and enhanced pedestrian access on and around The Broad along Grand Avenue.

The vault is enveloped by the “veil,” a porous, honeycomb-like exterior structure that spans across the block-long third-floor gallery and provides filtered natural daylight. The museum’s “veil” lifts at the corners, welcoming visitors into an active lobby and shop. The public is then drawn upwards via escalator, tunneling through the vault, arriving onto nearly an acre of column-free gallery space bathed in filtered light. The gallery has 23-foot-high ceilings, and the roof is supported by 7-foot-deep steel girders. Visitors exit the third floor via a winding central stair through the vault that offers glimpses into the vast holdings of the collection.

The Broad received LEED Gold certification. With its electric car charging stations, bike parking spaces, rooftop drains routed to street level gardens that filter runoff, high-efficiency plumbing fixtures that help reduce water use by 40 percent, and its easy access to public transit including adjacency to the new Metro Regional Connector station at the corner of 2nd and Hope Streets (anticipated opening: 2023), The Broad aims to be in the top tier of eco-conscious and efficient museums.

The Broad’s visitors reflected unprecedented diversity for an art museum, attracting a dramatically younger, more ethnically diverse audience than the national average – exceeding the client’s expectations. The Broad’s visitors reflect the diversity of Southern California and the dynamism of contemporary art. The average age of visitors is 33, compared to the national art museum average age of 45, and the percentage of ethnically diverse visitors is nearly three times the average of other art museums around the country. The Broad also continues to attract a large family audience with nearly 80 percent of visitors saying they had very little or a modest knowledge of contemporary art.

Since The Broad opened, the urban experience along Grand Avenue has flourished. Pedestrian traffic has visibly increased, and street life has expanded exponentially with food trucks and street musicians appearing daily and restaurants in the area extending their hours. This has been a great benefit to the local community situated around the museum. The museum generated more than $54 million in economic benefit to Los Angeles County, creating 490 jobs with labor income of $24 million. The museum also generated $8.2 million in local, state and federal tax revenue, according to a study by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation.

How Gremplin’s Cryptoadz Took The Nft Market By Storm

In a very short amount of time, CrypToadz has entered the upper echelon of NFT projects. Inspired by Larva Labs’ iconic CryptoPunks, Toadz — a collection of 6,969 NFTs — was conceived by now prominent anonymous artist Gremplin during a time when PFP and Punk-derivative projects saturated the market.

Launched on Sept. 8 at 0.069 ETH each, the CrypToadz floor at press time has bounced between 5 and 15 ETH, with the collection as a whole achieving around 41,200 ETH (nearly $170 million) in sales volume. CrypToadz also currently sits in the top 15 most traded collections on OpenSea, even surpassing legacy NFT project Curio Cards on the world’s largest NFT marketplace.

A preview of the CrypToadz collection, one month prior to launch.

Gremplin’s Rise From the Swamp

Yet, CrypToadz — which sold out in about 15 minutes — undoubtedly benefited from the status Gremplin had previously achieved within the non-fungible ecosystem. Even prior to Toadz hopping up OpenSea’s top NFTs chart, the enigmatic artist was on a long journey to solidify his reputation within the community.

the summation of crypto art culture across the entire collection is clear. the trait variety is immense yet perfectly cohesive. the references are simple but sophisticated. chúng tôi evan 🌷 (@evankeast) September 10, 2023

Gremplin started his dive into crypto art around January 2023, and began building up his brand months prior to Toadz. Slowly churning out a wide variety of NFT pieces and projects, the anonymous artist developed his own signature style through trial and error.

“I had previously dabbled in flipping CryptoKitties in 2023 and am aware of the volatility in the space. So I spun up a quick online presence and started to mint things in a sort of scattershot method,” Gremplin tells nft now. “I didn’t get the immediate success I thought I would have, so I looked at what was selling, which were things spinning around in 3D.”

With little experience in 3D art, Gremplin started making rudimentary pieces out of wool and cardboard. He spun these physical artworks around and minted the videos of his creations on Rarible, earning support from a small number of NFT collectors.

“That did OK,” says Gremplin. “But then I wanted more of myself to show again, so I started modeling basic shapes in 3D [software] to draw over, and then I spun those around and drew over all of that. People liked that too, but that was a lot of work.”

From there, Gremplin’s ideas grew, and after a few months of gaining traction with his spinning 3D art, he realized that the NFT “trend” was lasting a lot longer than he initially anticipated. With longevity in sight, Gremplin decided to shift away from minting.

The Road to Toadz

Over time, he became more comfortable with himself as Gremplin, and opportunities to build within the NFT space became abundant, leading to his involvement with Nouns, the fantastically successful NFT project with a current treasury of more than $50 million. Gremplin was already deep down the Nouns rabbit hole when a project called Weird Whales launched, providing the catalyst for CrypToadz.

Created by the London-based 12-year-old programmer Benyamin Ahmed, Weird Whales launched in July 2023, becoming next in a long list of CryptoPunk derivative projects. Taking direct inspiration from Punk traits, the whale-themed collection caught fire within the NFT community, selling out in less than 12 hours.

As he drew more Freaky Frogz over the weeks after Weird Whales, Gremplin says it became more natural to just “portmantoad the name into CrypToadz” — a reference to the CryptoPunks from which both he and Ahmed derived inspiration.

After less than a month of his Toadz concept art floating around Discord and Twitter, Gremplin launched an official Twitter account in early August. As for the evolution of the project itself, the Toadz artist says it wasn’t he who took the reins during CrypToadz’s development, but a group of his friends.

“Some friends kidnapped me and made the Toadz project a reality, with expectations that it was mostly a proof of concept for them working together as a team,” Gremplin tells nft now. “I think that proof of concept turned out fairly well!”

And beyond the project’s development, Gremplin says his friends are still involved with CrypToadz in some effort or another. He highlighted team members Motivateme and Loaf for fostering a “really positive [Discord] community.

The CrypToadz project team — each depicted as a Toad.

After the Toadz minting concluded, it wasn’t only the whimsical character art that pushed the project forward, but hype from a slew of prominent influencers seeing the value in the collection. Most prominent were Punk4156, founder of the Nouns project, and Beanie, founder of PUNKS Comic, each giving Toadz a major cosign.

Call me crazy, but I predict that Cool Cats and CrypToadz will probably run neck and neck floors all the way up to where Bored Ape Yacht Club is. And then both will flip the Apes. I’m calling it by November.

— chúng tôi (@beaniemaxi) October 5, 2023

Over the months, Punk4156 and others have attributed the success of CrypToadz in part to its art being public domain. That is, the art depicted by each of the 6,969 NFTs in the collection is licensed under creative commons with “no rights reserved.”

Specifically stated on the project’s website, “Gremplin has waived all copyright and related or neighboring rights to CrypToadz.” This means any CrypToadz can be used by anyone in the world as long as the art is used in a manner consistent with the CC0 license.

Yet, beyond finding a win in the CrypToadz community engaging with the collection’s public domain IP, Gremplin says the success of his collection has been incredible yet difficult to process. What’s more, he’s not yet entirely sure what the project has meant for him as an independent artist.

“My brain is doing a great job of protecting me from thinking about this, and instead I focus on drawing random Toadz, working on Nouns, and trying to engage with the community when I can,” Gremplin tells nft now. “This is all layered on top of my day job, so I’m personally stretched really thin, and incredibly thankful for our great [CrypToadz] team that has the energy to stay on top of everything.”

As for what’s next for the project, Gremplin says he and his team aren’t putting too much pressure on grandiose plans. Instead, they’re taking things as they come, and focusing on the community and developing in the present.

“We have a toadmap I could point to, but it’s just vibes,” Gremplin tells nft now. “The grand future is whatever our mass hallucination decides it is!”

Is Microsoft Crossing The Line By Pushing Security Essentials?

Microsoft has offered free protection with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) for some time, and it recently expanded the availability of the antivirus protection for small businesses. A recent move to push out Microsoft Security Essentials to Windows systems that don’t have any antivirus protection, however, has some rival security vendors up in arms. From Microsoft’s perspective, though, it’s a little “damned if you do, damned if you don’t”.

Panda Security’s Pedro Bustamente explains in a blog post, “We agree with Microsoft; it’s better to have some protection than not having any at all. However the way the guys in Redmond are executing the idea is risky from a security perspective and could very well make the malware situation much worse for Internet users.”

Bustamente then goes on to detail his arguments–not crying that Microsoft is using its operating system monopoly to squash competition, but making the case for why Microsoft’s approach might cause more harm than good.

I have worked with Pedro, and I respect his opinion, but I must differ on a few points. First, Bustamente points out that MSE is only pushed to Windows systems that are validated as authentic licensed copies. However, an estimated 40 percent of the Windows systems out there are not legally licensed, and malware infections are more prevalent on the pirated systems, so Microsoft is leaving a major segment of the Windows culture unprotected.

That is true, but so what? Even if Microsoft offered MSE for unlicensed copies of Windows, many would reject it out of fear that Microsoft would use to it detect and hunt down the illegal Windows systems–possibly disabling them remotely. Panda and other third-party security vendors already offer free solutions that would work for that 40 percent. The very fact that those 40 percent aren’t using the free tools that are available suggests they’re simply not interested.

Pedro then explains how Microsoft pushing MSE to all unprotected systems creates an AV monoculture where all systems are running the same AV protection, and any attack that can exploit or circumvent that protection will spread–unchallenged–and cripple the entire Internet.

The list goes on, and the fact is that even if Microsoft protected every Windows system not currently running a competing AV solution, there are still millions upon millions of Windows systems running the various other AV products available–and vendors such as Symantec and McAfee may very well present a larger security monoculture environment than Microsoft.

Bustamente asserts that Microsoft should save the time and effort dedicated to pushing free MSE to unprotected systems, and instead focus all of its resources on just developing more secure software in the first place so there wouldn’t be a be a need for security software. However, if that Utopian vision were actually possible, security vendors like Panda and Trend Micro would be out of business.

Is MSE the best security protection available? Probably not. Is it adequate? Yes. Is it better than nothing? Without a doubt.

Microsoft should constantly be working on simply making more secure products in the first place. However, it is hard to fault Microsoft for also providing the protection that today’s Windows systems need, and proactively pushing it to Windows users too naïve or ignorant to implement baseline security measures on their own.

What Are The Big Data Challenges Faced By Business Enterprises

Understanding the daily challenges, countered in the Big Data Domain.

In today’s connected world, users and devices together create over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data daily! And access to the right data and analytics tools can greatly enhance decision-making. This is where machine learning helps in by processing thousands of data points in real-time without the intervention of any human intervention to generate actionable intelligence. So, without any doubt,

Synchronization across Disparate Data Sources

A typical big data processing includes

Handling a Large Volume of Data

The data explosion is real. Today, data is exceeding the amount that can be stored and computed, as well as retrieved. While introducing new processing and storing capacities may not be an issue, managing is. This is because companies have to look into possibilities of scaling up in a manner that is less complex, and also ensures that the system’s performance doesn’t decline and upscaling lies within budget. One of the best solutions for this is opting for creating hybrid relational databases combined with NoSQL databases.

Privacy and Security

This is one of the rising concerns among many industry experts. This challenge includes sensitive, conceptual, technical as well as legal significance. Big data technologies do evolve, but their security features are still neglected since it’s hoped that security will be granted on the application level. Also, as operations grow, several businesses cannot maintain regular checks due to the simultaneous generation of large amounts of data.  Moreover, when it comes to collecting data, privacy laws differ from one politico-geographic area to another. Also, they can be applied differently depending on data type and quantity. But in any case, a single data breach can leave companies and their clients open to identity theft, liability, and loss of competitive information, so security is a big challenge that needs to be taken seriously. To counter this, leaders must plan for big data security right during the planning stage of solution architecture.

Big Data Handling Costs

The management of big data, right from the adoption stage to product launch, requires huge expenditure. Along with that, there are additional costs in developing, setting up, configuring, and maintaining new software even though the frameworks needed are open source. In the case of the cloud-based platform, too, organizations need to spend a hefty sum when it comes to hiring new staff (developers and administrators), cloud services, development, and also meet costs associated with the development, setup as well as maintenance of the needed frameworks. This is why planning as per business necessities and strategizing to allow smooth addition of extra spending must be prioritized. Another solution is instituting data lakes-these can provide cheap storage opportunities for the data one don’t need to analyze at the moment.

Recruiting and retaining big data talent

In today’s connected world, users and devices together create over 2.5 quintillion bytes of data daily! And access to the right data and analytics tools can greatly enhance decision-making. This is where machine learning helps in by processing thousands of data points in real-time without the intervention of any human intervention to generate actionable intelligence. So, without any doubt, big data is an emerging disruptive technology in today’s IT domain. However, like any other new technologies, big data also has its own set of challenges, especially from the noise about its potential and capabilities. According to the NewVantage Partners Big Data Executive Survey 2023 , 95 percent of the Fortune 1000 business leaders surveyed said that these firms had undertaken a big data project in the last five years. However, less than half (48.4 percent) said that their big data initiatives had achieved measurable results. So, let us dive into some of the common challenges faced in this sector.A typical big data processing includes extraction , transformation, and load approach to data integration. Here a greater part of the data is brought to a staging area and synchronized as the data sets are processed in preparation for loading into the target system. However, as the number of origination points expands and the speed at which data is produced and delivered increases. This creates a huge challenge to integrate and sync the data touchpoints, especially when they are far isolated and diverse. Though some vendors are currently offering various ETL and data integration tools designed to make the process easier, many enterprises say that they have not solved the data integration problem chúng tôi data explosion is real. Today, data is exceeding the amount that can be stored and computed, as well as retrieved. While introducing new processing and storing capacities may not be an issue, managing is. Although we have data scientists , data miners, data analysts, or big data specialists graduating every year; most of them either find themselves deviating away from their chosen career or end up giving insights that fail to solve the issue under consideration. And a significant share of those remaining in the pool is clueless when assigned to extract meaningful and valuable data. So to resolve this situation, a majority of organizations are turning to automated analysis solutions that utilize machine learning, AI, and automation to extract meaning from data by involving minimal manual coding. These are some of the major bottlenecks in the path of Big data adoption in business culture. There are several minors yet everyday challenges faced in this discipline too. These include, data governance, organizational resistance, outdated or inadequate data models, poor data quality, and amplified biases.

‘It’s The Best Guide’: Kristina Keneally’s ‘Golden Rule’ To Live By

Few women in Australia carry the breadth of leadership experience of former New South Wales premier and Australian senator Kristina Keneally. From politics to sport and now her role as chief executive of the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation – Keneally has experienced it all.

Keneally’s role as CEO of the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation allows her to bring together her passion for children and health with her leadership, change and policy experience.

“Every day, I get to help improve the care, experiences and opportunities for sick kids and their families. It is a humbling and tremendous opportunity,” she told Forbes Australia.

What is something from your childhood or youth that drove you to achieve?

Competing in sports, specifically team sports and contact sports. I learned how to be ambitious, set goals, plan, train, prepare, work collaboratively with my teammates, and accept both victory and defeat gracefully. I learned how to manage conflict, lead others, and take coaching and direction. Sports also allowed me to know the difference between assertiveness and aggressiveness, test my limits for pain and endurance, and understand the benefits of being emotionally and physically strong.

What is something you do every day that sets you up for success?

Prepare for the next day before I go to bed at night and get up early in the morning. When my kids were young, I got up early in the morning to do laundry, make dinner, or exercise. Now that the kids are grown, I get up at 5 am every day, put on the exercise clothes I laid out the night before, and sit down for 75 minutes of work. Sometimes I focus on a project; other times, I do tasks and emails. Then I do an hour of exercise – running, yoga or weights.  By 7:30 am, I feel I have already accomplished a great deal and could take on the world.

What was one failure or disappointment that encouraged you to strive higher or do better?

I was cut from the basketball team at my high school in Toledo, Ohio.  Truth be told, I had been able to coast in basketball up to that point [based] on my height and talent. Being cut proved a great teachable moment. I realised that raw talent on its own does not guarantee success. Hard work is also required. I decided I would never again lose an opportunity because I had failed to put in the effort to earn it. It is ok to try your best and fail, but it is not ok to fail because you didn’t try your best. (I worked hard and got back on the team – in year 11, we were in the top 10 teams in Ohio.)

What would you like to have done with your life if your career hadn’t taken the path that it did?

I do not live with regrets. I own my career choices. I have been fortunate to have experienced many different roles and learned something valuable from each one. That being said, I think I would have found satisfaction in being a police detective or perhaps an officer in a national security agency. I like deductive reasoning, and the justice and community service aspects of those roles appeal to me. But, back in the 1980s, national security and policing were not the kinds of jobs that the nuns at my high school recommended young ladies consider for their futures.

“It is ok to try your best and fail, but it is not ok to fail because you didn’t try your best.”

Kristina Keneally

What is one attribute that you think other people underestimate in you?

What do you love to do for enjoyment outside of work?

My greatest peace comes from being outside and physically active – kayaking, bushwalking, stand-up paddling, and trail running. I love being in and around water, making life in Sydney a joy. I also love cooking for friends and family – including my speciality, keto cheesecakes. I went keto during the pandemic, and it has been great for my health, fitness, reducing inflammation and revitalising my enthusiasm for cooking.

What is the most powerful action you have used to be successful in life, business, and relationships?

Treat people as you want to be treated – the “Golden Rule”. It is the best guide in any situation. It is also what was instilled in me by my parents, teachers, and my faith – that we have an obligation to help others and make the world a better place than how we found it. A passion for social justice and service drove me to politics in the first place – to contribute to a stronger and fairer society. I’ve left politics, but that passion will never leave.

“Treat people as you want to be treated – the “Golden Rule”. It is the best guide in any situation.”

It is why I love working for the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation now. Every day I get to help improve the care, experiences and opportunities for sick kids and their families.  It is a humbling and tremendous opportunity.

In moments of pain, how did you manage to keep going? What was the motivator?

The most painful experience was losing my second child, my daughter Caroline, to stillbirth. I kept going thanks to the unconditional love of my husband Ben, who was experiencing his own grief as well; the hope offered in my first-born son, who was only 15 months old at the time; the care provided by amazing doctors and social workers at the Royal

Women’s Hospital and the Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick; and my belief that our human lives – no matter how long or short – have meaning and transformative power in this world.

What keeps you up at night?

Not much.  After so many years in varied high-profile roles with big responsibilities, I have learned how to shut my brain down at night – often by using routines to prepare for sleep and the day ahead. If I had not developed these habits, I would have never gotten any sleep.

Women in politics: what needs to happen on this front? Are there still challenges?

So much has changed in the past 20 years – most of it for the better. I am proud to have played a part in that change. I have confidence that the current generation of women in politics will make even bigger and better changes ahead.

What is something you value more than anything else?

The love of my family. They are the most important people in my life. I am full of gratitude for their unconditional love for me, and I would do anything to help them – especially my children – achieve their dreams and potential.

What is next for Kristina Keneally?

I am fortunate to lead a team of talented and collaborative fundraisers and change agents at the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation. SCHF is the largest children’s charity in Australia and one of the largest children’s hospital foundations in the world.  In the last three years, we have raised $170 million for the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network. In May, we held the annual Gold Dinner, where the funds raised will help to support projects such as The Centre for Clinical Genetics, palliative care, mental health, critical care and research into rare diseases. At the foundation, we have big ambitions for the next three years – to raise even more funds to support excellent clinical care, the best possible patient experience, and cutting-edge research in kids’ health. For nearly 40 years, SCHF has supported all sick kids: toddlers and teenagers, newborns and the not-yet-borns, those who can be cured, and those who just want a fighting chance.

I am so excited to help set the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation up for the next 40 years of growth, creating transformative and generational impacts on children’s health.
