Sure, a turkey seems pretty harmless sitting there all carved up in the middle of the dining room table. It seems harmless. But if you’ve ever been chased by a gigantic butterball of feathers and fury while innocently wandering through your own front yard, you know that even turkey-sized creatures can be intimidating in their own right.

That’s the case with Sinosauropteryx, a 130-million-year-old dinosaur from China. In a study published in Current Biology, researchers found that this dinosaur’s color patterns indicate it likely lived in an open environment, with very few trees, where it could hunt lizards—lizard-like bones were found in the stomach region—and try to avoid being hunted itself.

You might remember Sinosauropteryx from a study seven years ago. Then, it gained notoriety for being one of the first dinosaurs whose colors could be definitively identified. Now, researchers think they have a better idea of how that coloring was distributed over the body.

It seems that this particular dinosaur had a dark back, a striped tail, and a lighter underbelly that ended quite high up on the dino’s sides. Oh, and a mask.

“The bandit mask was really amazing to discover,” Fiann Smithwick, a lead author of the paper from the University of Bristol, said in a statement. “It’s a pattern seen in numerous living animals today.”

The trash panda-like coloring might have been used as camouflage, helping hide the dinosaur’s eyes amidst darker fur to conceal it from potential predators or prey, or it could have helped ease the harshness of the sun reflecting into its eyes. The lighter coloring on its underside is similar to camouflage patterns seen on animals today that live in open areas like savannahs or plains.

The environment that Sinosauropteryx lived in was vastly different from the home of another small dinosaur, Psittacosaurus, whose coloring was analyzed last year by the same researchers. They found that Psittacosaurus, with its mostly dark coloring, likely lived in a more forested environment. But both dinosaurs lived in roughly the same geographic zone, a region in what is now China that the authors refer to as Jehol lakes.

“Jehol clearly was not only rich taxonomically, but was also likely varied in the habitats available to animals and consisted of a mosaic of environments, which may explain the area’s extraordinary biodiversity,” the authors write in the paper, pointing out that over the 10 million years encompassed in these fossil-rich layers, the climate and vegetation could also have shifted many times.

In only seven years since we figured out how to decipher the coloring of dinosaurs, we’ve already come a long way. We know know that some dinosaurs were irridescent, we’ve discovered how to use particle accelerators and metals to decipher colors. But now we’re starting to go beyond mere appearances and get at the heart of how those colors related to the dinos’ lives, and environments.

Maybe someday we’ll be able to color in even more details about the life and times of dinosaurs, from the turkey-sized to the tyrannical and everything in between.

Multiple standards are competing, and the formats are ever-evolving. Nevertheless, HDR is the future. With high-definition visuals becoming commonplace on personal devices and home TVs, HDR is what audiences are coming to expect, and even demand, out in the real world.

Higher luminance, a wider color gamut and a broader contrast range are all the order of the day — and the race is on for sports facilities, entertainment complexes, corporate centers and the like to deliver.

As we covered in our HDR 101 guide, there’s a whole lot to be excited about. The fact is, HDR is as close as technology has gotten to reproducing what humans see in real life — vibrant colors, sharper contrasts, crisper details. The essential difference between standard dynamic range (SDR) and HDR is 8-bit video versus 10-bit video. For all of its promise, there’s plenty of perplexing information out there about how to actually build an HDR system from end to end. Part of that is because there’s no set standard, every HDR system is custom. Let’s survey the entire chain of custody — from the subject being filmed, all the way to the audience member consuming the content — to give you a clearer picture of all the tools necessary to bring this stunning visual experience to life.

1. Capturing 10-bit video

Cameras

It all begins with the camera. You need a camera that can record 10-bit video at a minimum, though some cameras go up to as much as 16-bit. You’ll find some models on the market are able to capture a range of formats with a single camera, such as 4K HDR, 4K SDR, HD HDR and HD SDR. Some can even capture both HDR and SDR content simultaneously. Experts recommend you use 4K HDR as your primary production format, as this enables you to convert to the widest range of distribution formats down the line.

2. Preserving dynamic range

It’s important to note that the footage comes out of the camera flat. This means that even though all the 10-bit resolution has been captured, you’ll need to do some extra processing to actually bring it out of your imaging. Here are some of the pieces you’ll need in the chain to make that happen:

Video processing

You’ll be using a computer to process your video, and within that piece of hardware, you’ll need an HDR-ready graphics card and OS. The HDR load is significantly larger and more specialized than what is needed for SDR. Most of the systems on the market are not set up for this purpose.

To clarify, the graphics card is the piece of tech that’s going to make it possible to preview the effects and color grade you’re applying to the raw 10-bit footage. Without it, your playback will be inaccurate. Then the OS needs to have HDR capability enabled, as most do not by default. If you miss one step in this chain, HDR is lost.

Monitors

An HDR-enabled monitor is essential. Whether you’re filming or editing, you need to work with a display that’s accurately representing the HDR imagery you’re capturing and processing. Once again, that means you need the magic number of 10-bit capability. Many monitors are 8-bit panels, so be sure to find one that goes the extra 2-bit mile. Don’t forget if you have a set standard in mind, e.g., HDR10+, then you will need a monitor that has that certification.

Switchers, splitters and other hardware

For live broadcast, switchers and splitters are two more examples of pieces of technology commonly found in the video chain that will need to be HDR-equipped in order to deliver the full dynamic range to the end user. Every piece of hardware must support the bandwidth necessary to handle HDR content on the way in, as well as to output it in the correct format. This includes transmitting any and all requisite metadata that has been captured or programmed. Many of these pieces support a number of HDR formats, from HDR10/HDR10+ to Dolby Vision to Hybrid log-gamma (HLG).

Codecs

Your video codec — the software or hardware that compresses and decompresses digital video — will need to support HDR. The files you’ll be dealing with are 4K video files with 10-bit color — substantially large files that will place a hefty load on your system. You can have all the other pieces of the puzzle HDR-ready, but without an appropriate codec, your system will not deliver the HDR content.

Cables

Yes, even your cables must be HDR-compatible. Every piece of the chain matters.

3. Reproducing HDR video accurately

LED displays

Interestingly enough, the display is the easy part. Most direct view LED displays already have the brightness and contrast necessary to reproduce HDR content. And most can also easily accommodate — and even exceed — the DCI-P3 color gamut, which TV manufacturers have deemed the threshold for HDR content. So whether you’re sending a live HDR feed of a sports event to a display, or running prescheduled content on an out-of-home (OOH) digital billboard, your display is going to be the least of your worries. It’s getting the HDR signal to the display cleanly and accurately that’s far more challenging.

Broadcast

Broadcasting is a different story. Let’s say you’re a sports team that wants to broadcast HDR games on live TV. You will want to loop in the network — ESPN, let’s say — and make sure they are part of that discussion, because every network has different capacities for receiving and reproducing HDR content. The earlier you involve your broadcast partners, the better.

There’s no getting around it: HDR systems are complex assemblages of spec-heavy hardware and software. And it’s going to be some time before there’s an out-of-the-box solution for you to buy. But that shouldn’t deter you from moving forward. HDR is the bar-none best vehicle for offering an unparalleled visual experience for your audience — and it’s only a matter of time before it’s in your competitors’ arsenal.

The Future Of Hurricanes Is Full Of Floods—A Lot Of Them

Future hurricanes will bring more extreme flooding to coastal cities in the eastern United States due to a double hit from worsening storm surge and heavy rainfall, scientists reported on February 3 in Nature Climate Change.

The researchers simulated how climate change could alter the impacts of tropical cyclones through the end of the 21st century. They found that the combined frequency of intense storm surge and rainfall that clobbers the coastline may increase by seven to 36 times in the southern US and 30 to 195 times in the Northeast. 

“The results that are presented in the paper give us a pretty good idea of what to possibly expect in the future,” says Thomas Wahl, a coastal engineer at the University of Central Florida who wasn’t involved in the research. “There will likely be a pretty dramatic change in…the likelihood that different flooding drivers occur simultaneously.”

Since 1880, climate change has caused the average global sea level to rise by about 8 to 9 inches. Additionally, climate change is altering the intensity, size, track, and frequency of hurricanes, says Ning Lin, an environmental engineer at Princeton University and coauthor of the new findings. These storm characteristics and sea level rise both influence how much damage hurricanes can wreak on coastal cities.

During a hurricane, one cause of flooding is storm surge, which is caused by powerful winds pushing seawater to the shore. Drenching rains, like those seen during Hurricane Harvey in 2023, can also be devastating. “In the past, our group and others have been looking at these hazards more or less separately,” Lin says. For the new research, she and her team wanted to understand what happens when storm surge and rainfall join forces.

The researchers investigated how thousands of simulated storms would impact the Gulf and Atlantic coasts under late 20th century and projected future climate conditions. The team homed in on so-called joint extreme events, during which the amount of rainfall produced during a 24-hour period and the storm tide—the total seawater level from storm surge and normal tide—each had a 1 percent probability of occurring in any given year. 

“Such events actually are very rare in the historical period,” Lin says. Joint extreme events would be expected to occur about once every 200 to 500 years along the Gulf of Mexico, and less than once every thousand years on average along the New England coastline under historic climate conditions. However, Lin and her colleagues calculated that by 2100, these extreme floods might strike every 10 to 30 years along the Gulf Coast and southeast Atlantic, and every 3 to 10 years along New England and the Mid-Atlantic. 

“In the future climate it’s more likely that we’ll get extreme surge and extreme rainfall at the same time, so that you will have much higher total flooding,” she says.

The researchers also estimated that, in most areas, the increasing intensity and sluggish speed of future hurricanes will play a more important role in these extreme floods than sea level rise.

The findings do come with several caveats. There’s still uncertainty about how much hurricane frequency and sea level rise will change in the coming decades, and the researchers focused on a climate scenario in which greenhouse gas emissions are not curbed. As a next step, Lin and her team will explore how their predictions might change under less dire emissions scenarios.

The findings offer a “big-picture view” on how storm surge and rainfall will worsen flooding in the future, Wahl says, and offer a jumping-off point to identify vulnerable locations within each region. More localized, detailed modeling could help unpack how climate change is creating storm conditions that lead to more flood risk, he says.

There are a number of ways that coastal cities can prepare for the onslaught, including restoring natural buffers, such as wetlands and oyster beds, and constructing seawalls and other barriers. Floods driven by both extreme rainfall and storm surge may pose a particular challenge, Wahl says, because barriers that block incoming storm surge may also prevent rainwater from draining into the ocean.

“That’s where studies like this that tell us about the chances that storm surge and rainfall coincide in the future…can help us make better decisions when it comes to adapting for both inland flooding and coastal flooding,” he says.

Jonathan Poe, senior vice president at the analyst firm Meta Group, says smart CIOs know that delivering value from the IT department to the overall business starts with having the right people in the right roles. And more and more IT leaders are looking at reshaping their IT structures. Poe says between 2002 and 2003, more than 80% of global 2000 companies will overhaul their IT organizations.

Bringing in the right people is only part of the job. The other part entails creating the right positions — in essence, creating lieutenants to serve the CIO, freeing his hands to focus on the bigger picture.

Q: Is this something that only new CIOs should think about doing?

Every CIO should be looking at it, but it is especially important for new CIOs. You need good managers to be successful. You need the right people to get the right results for you. It’s amazing how few CIOs have purposeful staff positions focused on getting specific results.

If a CIO has been in his or her position for a few years, why should he or she tinker around with staff?

If you’ve been there for years, you have a legacy set up and staff kludges. This manager can’t get along with this manager. And this group can’t do that work, so you start carving out niches that don’t make sense for the business.

If you’re coming in as the new CIO, do you really want to start out by letting people go or rearranging staff positions?

These organizations you come into were designed for the last guy, who probably got fired. Bring in an administrative assistant and a key lieutenant…a few key people, if not a whole team, because that is what is going to make you successful.

I think you don’t have to be the hatchet person. That shows poor negotiations. If you’re an executive interviewing with a firm, part of your terms and conditions for coming on board should be laying out that you want a personal assistant. Tell them you work pretty well with a certain team of people or a lieutenant. Part of the negotiation should be what part of your team you can bring on board. If you’re walking in as a CIO and you don’t know if you can trust your admin, that’s a bad start right there. The company can take care of the hatchet job before you arrive.

Isn’t it generally against contract to take employees from your old job with you when you leave for a new job?

There’s that argument, but most labor laws are fairly wide open in regards to taking your team with you. You see whole teams moving from one brokerage to another. Companies like to say you can’t take anybody with you, but it doesn’t mean you can’t work around that. When an employee quits his job, he might know what his next job is going to be. And if it happens that two weeks later he’s working at a different firm, then it was just an offer you couldn’t refuse. Corporations will say you can’t go work for a competitor but those things are hard to enforce and smart people figure out ways to get around it.

How do you figure out what specific positions you need to fill?

You need to set up positions around projects and specific operations. You need to have people who will execute specific functions for you. As a CIO or executive, you can’t spend a lot of time in people development or communications, for example. You need to have a trusted lieutenant to take care of that kind of leadership.

What are some of the positions a CIO should focus on creating?

You should have an IT/Human Capital Management position. You want to make sure your IT guys are being effective and productive. You know how complicated some of these systems are, so you want to have the right people working for you. You can’t end up with a single point of dependency on one person. As an executive, you won’t have time to take care of all of this. And you need to know somebody is making sure my employees are happy, my pipeline is full and my people are being used as efficiently as possible.

You need an IT/Finance position. IT budgets are a significant portion of a corporation’s budget. It’s greater than plant and equipment, greater than facilities, greater than real estate. Most executives want to know what they’re getting for that investment. On all those little projects, on all those installations, you’ve got to show the rate of return and value. On the upper end, this can be kind of tricky. What kinds of rates of return are proper for a risky project? As we bring in new projects and new initiatives, how do we know the assumptions are the same as last year? You need someone to take care of all of this for you.
