Suggested January 2024 These 6 Galaxies Are So Huge, They’ve Been Nicknamed ‘Universe Breakers’
Using the first dataset released by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), an international team of scientists have discovered something surprising– evidence of six massive galaxies that existed during the early days of our universe.
“These objects are way more massive than anyone expected,” said Joel Leja, an astronomer and astrophysicist at Penn State University, in a statement. “We expected only to find tiny, young, baby galaxies at this point in time, but we’ve discovered galaxies as mature as our own in what was previously understood to be the dawn of the universe.”
[Related: Astronomers are already using James Webb Space Telescope data to hunt down cryptic galaxies.]
Leja is co-author of a study published February 22 in the journal Nature that could change some of our preconceived notions of how galaxies form. These newly discovered galaxies themselves date back to about 500 to 700 million years after the Big Bang. JWST has infrared-sensing instruments on board that can detect light that was emitted by the most ancient stars and galaxies, allowing astronomers to see roughly 13.5 billion years back in time.
“This is our first glimpse back this far, so it’s important that we keep an open mind about what we are seeing,” Leja said. “While the data indicates they are likely galaxies, I think there is a real possibility that a few of these objects turn out to be obscured supermassive black holes. Regardless, the amount of mass we discovered means that the known mass in stars at this period of our universe is up to 100 times greater than we had previously thought. Even if we cut the sample in half, this is still an astounding change.”
Since these six galaxies were far more massive than anyone on the team expected them to be, they could upend previous notions about the galaxy formation at the very beginning of the universe.
“The revelation that massive galaxy formation began extremely early in the history of the universe upends what many of us had thought was settled science,” said Leja. “We’ve been informally calling these objects ‘universe breakers’ — and they have been living up to their name so far.”
The authors argue that the “universe breakers” are so large, that almost all modern cosmological models fail to explain how these star systems could have formed.
[Related: Our universe mastered the art of making galaxies while it was still young.]
“We looked into the very early universe for the first time and had no idea what we were going to find,” Leja said. “It turns out we found something so unexpected it actually creates problems for science. It calls the whole picture of early galaxy formation into question.”
One way that the team can confirm their new findings is with a spectrum image that could provide data on the true distances between us and the mysterious galaxies, as well as the gasses and other elements present. It would also paint a more clear picture of what these galaxies looked like billions of years ago.
“A spectrum will immediately tell us whether or not these things are real,” Leja said. “It will show us how big they are, how far away they are. What’s funny is we have all these things we hope to learn from James Webb and this was nowhere near the top of the list. We’ve found something we never thought to ask the universe — and it happened way faster than I thought, but here we are.”
NASA released JWST’s first full-color images and spectroscopic data on July 12, 2023. One of JWST’s primary goals this year is to better map and create a timeline of the earliest days of the universe with its high resolution and infrared spotting capabilities.

Shark Attacks Are So Unlikely, But So Fascinating
– An undated photo – of a Great White shark which can now be repelled by a electronic shark shield…
Chomp.
Sharks are incredibly unlikely to bite you. They’re even less likely to kill you. However, we remain fascinated with their ability–and occasional proclivity–to do just that. With so many things more likely to harm us, why do we pay such rapt attention when sharks make headlines?
As a shark researcher and curator of the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), it’s a question I think about each spring when I prepare my annual report of shark-attack statistics. This year we had some good news: In 2014 fatalities were down worldwide, as were attacks. In the US, attacks were up only slightly from 47 last year to 52, with most of those being minor incidents that are more like dog bites than something out of Jaws.
There wasn’t a single fatality in the entire country last year and only three worldwide. In the past decade, the US has averaged less than one per year. To put that into perspective, more people die from drowning every day in this country than were killed by sharks in ten years. In 2013, more people in the U.S. died from encounters with nonvenomous insects, and a lot more–62–were killed by hornets, wasps and bees, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Underlying Cause of Death database.

We’re in their aquatic territory more nowWhen you think of how much time we spend in the water, it’s amazing how innocuous shark and human interaction is. When the ISAF began in the 1950s, scientists were concerned primarily with shark attacks after ships and aircraft went down at sea.
A lot has changed since then. There are a lot more of us on earth today than there were back then and there will be even more tomorrow. Aquatic recreation has never been more popular. More people are kayaking, surfing, diving and paddleboarding.
More time in the water means more time to interface with sharks. Stefan Schmitz, CC BY-ND
Numbers may go up, but we’re learningThat’s why, even though fatalities are rare, we can expect to see an increase in the number–but not rate–of attacks. There aren’t a lot of things in science that I am willing to predict with certainty, but I am confident that in the second decade of this century we will see more attacks than in the first. That said, attacks are not rising as fast as we might suppose they would because we’re doing a better job of heeding beach safety and people are more shark-savvy than they were a decade ago. We’re starting to understand how to avoid sharks.
At the ISAF, we investigate every reported shark attack. Some are reported by hospitals, some by volunteers and scientists around the world. Others we find out about through traditional or social media.
In each case, through investigation we confirm that the guilty party was actually a shark. (You’d be surprised how many people who say they were bitten by a shark were bitten by something else, or not bitten at all.) We analyze the bite, which tells us the size of the shark, and sometimes the species. The ecological and behavioral circumstances surrounding the incident–from both the human and shark perspectives–give clues as to why the interaction occurred.

Tracking helps with preventionA great white shark leaps from South African waters
Despite its fearsome reputation and sharp teeth, the Great White is not usually one to attack humans.
People need to understand more fully that when we enter the sea, it’s a wilderness experience. We’re eco-tourists and are not owed the right to be 100% safe. That’s what fascinates us about sharks: There’s an innate concern in our psyches about not wanting to get eaten. Almost every other animal on earth has to worry about getting eaten night and day. As humans, we rarely have that concern. People hold sharks in awe as one of the rare species that reminds us we’re still potentially part of a food chain.
You’re much more likely to be injured or die during your evening run than in a shark attack, but don’t expect to turn on the Discovery Channel and see Sneaker Week. For better or worse, we’re hard-wired to pay attention to creatures that can eat us–even if they rarely do.

6 Huge B2B Social Media Marketing Mistakes To Avoid
There are many ways marketers can use social media, and we often see a lot of great examples of social media marketing from products or national brands and local businesses that really thrive on generating brand loyalty and involvement from their customers.
But what if your product or service is something with a long sales cycle rather than a sought-after consumer product, or if your target audience is composed of IT managers or CFOs rather than moms or college students? You can still reach key B2B stakeholders through social media marketing. But without the right strategies and tactics in place to reach these buyers on the right platforms, your social media efforts can end up hurting, rather than helping, your business.
Here are some of the biggest social media marketing mistakes to avoid – and what to do instead.
1. Dedicating Resources to the Wrong PlatformsRegardless of your business size or industry, building a robust social media presence is vital – but it doesn’t have to be everything to everyone. It’s important, especially if your resources are limited, that you’re focusing your social media efforts in places that will generate the most return for your efforts, but you can’t just guess at which ones those are. Not knowing where to start your social media strategy might be the result of a bigger underlying problem: not knowing your target audience. So, take some steps to figure out who your current buyers are and what your audience really looks like.
If you’re not exactly sure of the answers, or want to focus the majority of your efforts on a single platform, start with Facebook. It is the most widely used social media site by far, with 1.65 billon active users, and 66% of users logging on daily. So, chances are, your target prospects at least have a personal Facebook profile and are spending time there regularly. In fact, Facebook users spend an average of 50 minutes a day on the site. And, research shows that popular days and times for Facebook are Wednesday-Friday afternoons before four p.m., prime time for B2B organizations to reach out to their target audience.
2. Having a Narrow Definition of Social Media MarketingMany businesses may think social media marketing just means having a claimed and active business page on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social channels. But this narrow view of social media marketing overlooks a wide variety of channels and strategies that can expand a business’ reach, create communities, and drive engagement.
Here are a few social media tactics that your B2B organization can benefit from:
Use LinkedIn Showcase pages to highlight top products or solutions and drive traffic directly to that page
Create a Facebook or LinkedIn group to generate engagement from an active user community
Leverage external social communities and online forums to drive user conversations and answer technical questions
Have a robust and active Glassdoor profile that reinforces your company’s brand and message
Publish product, customer, and community videos on an optimized YouTube page
3. Having a One-and-Done Content StrategyWhat do all social media platforms have in common? They’re all content driven. But many B2B organizations don’t have a sustainable content strategy to fuel continuous interest and engagement on social media. On Twitter, your content typically only lives for about 20 minutes; on Facebook, a few hours. But, too often, businesses are struggling to create and share new content multiple times a day to post on these sites.
To achieve a repeatable content strategy that saves you time and effort, here are a few tips for generating and repurposing content for your social media marketing efforts:
Tap into internal experts: Don’t just leave the content creation up to your marketing team or agency, which could eat up a lot of your team’s time. Expand your content creation capabilities by leveraging subject matter experts from all areas of the business to contribute new perspectives on your industry. We frequently rely on product managers, service delivery experts, and even executive leadership team members to provide insight into the industry and provide fresh voices to our prospects and clients.
Share all the content from or about your business: Whether it’s a simple post on your company blog, an article for a third-party publication, a product video on YouTube, a press release, an interview or Q&A, or something else: promote all of your content across your social sites.
4. Avoiding New Content Formats (like Video)Does your business only post 1-sentence status updates to your social media channels or link to curated content? You may not have experience creating live videos, presentations, or Buzzfeed-style articles, so you use this as an excuse not to try your hand at these tactics, but adding them to your toolkit can help you engage more of your audience on social media.
Here are a few ways to reach and appeal to your target buyers with new formats:
Create engaging videos: Not only do 87% of marketers already use video content, but it’s also one of the most liked and engaged-with forms of content on social media. So think about putting together some videos about your business, products, or services. Some of our top videos include Q&As, short webinars, product overviews, and client case studies.
Try your hand at live video: When it comes to social media, sometimes what works best isn’t the high-budget, edited video. Especially if you are short on time or lack video-editing capabilities. Chewbacca mom skyrocketed to viral stardom with a Facebook live video shot on a smartphone. While she’s not a B2B marketer, the lesson learned here is that sometimes a simple, emotional video is more. Facebook Live has already generated 8 billion video views per day, and on the heels of this, Twitter announced live streaming platform Periscope would be integrated directly into its timeline. Try creating a live video for your brand when you know your target viewers are most likely online the most, like weekday afternoons for Facebook.
Publish directly on social sites: In addition to creating content on your blog or website and amplifying it on your social channels, think about publishing new content directly on social sites themselves. LinkedIn, Facebook Instant Articles, and Slideshare are just a few examples of native content mediums that grow your brand’s reach and engagement on individual social media sites. If you decide to repurpose existing content for these publishers, take some time to make it unique for each platform and format by changing up the text and images – this also helps original to avoid SEO conflicts and site penalties.
Build relationships with influencers: When it comes to B2B social media marketing, some of your biggest lift can come from other people in your industry. Forming relationships and earning interest from top influencers can result in published content about your business (either content that you write or content that’s written about you), shared or retweeted content, positive brand mentions, and more. All of this can add to your social media inventory and propel your business into social media success.
5. Not Paying to Play
Know your goal: If you’re relying heavily on content marketing in your organization, you can reach a broader audience by boosting a popular post from your Facebook page. You should only pay to promote pieces of content that already have a good amount of reach and engagement, since the traffic you generate organically is a good indicator of whether or not your content will continue to perform well when you promote it. If your goal, however, is to drive a true conversion, such as a website download, a call, a contact form inquiry, or an online purchase – you’ll want to create an ad to promote your offer on Facebook that uses the right call to action to encourage viewers to take a specific action.
Use the right targeting: Whether you’re boosting an organic post or creating an ad, Facebook provides an abundance of audience targeting options to help you reach and engage just the right users. For B2B businesses and brands, it’s in your interest to identify and build a target audience similar to people who already like, engage with, and buy from you. There are a few ways you can create a niche target audience on Facebook:
Upload an existing customer or prospecting list (Excel or CSV file)
Create a lookalike audience with traits similar to your current customers
Target specific employers, job titles, industries, and business locations
Select demographics like gender, age, and income
Specify employer and/or job title
Keep your budget in check: Even as a B2B business, you don’t have to spend a ton of money on Facebook. You can start with a small budget and build on it if you see good results from your efforts. Keep in mind that the narrower the audience you target with an ad, the more it will cost you. If you’re not entirely sure who you’re trying to reach and are comfortable casting a wider net, start with a broader audience, and use Facebook’s optimization technology to help your ad reach the most engaged users.
6. Keeping your Social Media Separate from SEO Go Forth & Be Social! The most important thing to remember is no matter what you’re doing on social, be active. One of the top mistakes B2B businesses make is simply failing to be social. Because social media is so fluid, you have a lot of opportunities to try new strategies, test tactics, ask for feedback, and be more agile than you can with some other marketing methods. Even if you think you’re just selling boring software, social media can your chance to dedicate some of your most creative minds, time, and budget to your efforts.

These Black Holes Collided So Hard They Made Space
Some 7 billion light-years away, two black holes swirled closer and closer together over eons until they crashed together with a furious bang, creating a new black hole in the process. This disturbance in the cosmos caused space-time to stretch, collapse, and even jiggle, producing ripples known as gravitational waves which reached our Earthly abode on May 21st of 2023.
Using LIGO (Laser Interferometry Gravitational-wave Observatory), a pair of identical, two-and-a-half-mile-long interferometers in the United States, and Virgo, a roughly two-mile-long detector in Italy, an international team of scientists announced Wednesday that they had detected this cosmic collision, and it’s racking up superlatives: it’s the biggest, the farthest, and the most energetic black hole merger observed to date. This is also the first definite sighting of an intermediate-sized black hole, clocking in at about 142 times more massive than the Sun, forged from a black hole merger. The findings were published on Wednesday in a paper detailing the discovery in Physical Review Journals and another detailing the implications of the event in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
The merger signal, called GW190521, lasted only a tenth of a second—but scientists immediately realized it was extraordinary in comparison to the low chirp of two colliding black holes LIGO detected in 2023, which confirmed Einstein’s ineffable notions on space-time. “It’s the biggest bang since the Big Bang that humanity has ever observed,” says Alan Weinstein, an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology who was part of the study. It could offer clues as to why the Universe looks the way it does.
Computer algorithms analyzed the signal, ultimately allowing scientists to pinpoint the masses of the merger and just how much energy was released. The two progenitor black holes weighing in at about 66 and 85 solar masses merged into a black hole of 142 Suns. The remaining eight solar masses would have been converted into gravitational wave energy.
Up until now, scientists have been able to detect and indirectly observe black holes in two different size ranges: stellar-mass black holes, which measure from a few solar masses up to tens of solar masses, and supermassive black holes that range from hundreds of thousands to several billions of times the mass of our sun. However, astronomers that detected GW190521 witnessed the birth of a special breed of black hole: an “intermediate-mass” black hole. A few potential intermediate black holes have been spotted, but this is the first direct evidence of their existence.
This strange signal was produced by the merger of two equally weird black holes: The heavier of the two merging black holes, at 85 solar masses, is the first black hole so far detected smack-dab in what is known as the “pair-instability mass gap.” A star that collapses shouldn’t be able to produce a black hole between the range of 65 to 120 solar masses because the most massive stars are obliterated by the supernova that comes hand in hand with their collapse. According to Weinstein, a possible explanation might be what astronomers call hierarchical mergers—when lighter stellar-mass black holes merge into heavier ones, which then merge into heavier ones still,” consolidating until they become gargantuan black holes.
Astrophysicist K.E. Saavik Ford of the Graduate Center at City University New York who was not involved in the study says this finding is particularly exciting: “It’s a bridge between the black holes that are formed directly when stars collapse and supermassive black holes that we find in the centers of galaxies.” As Saavik Ford points out, it’s actually very hard to make hierarchical mergers since black hole remnants have to find each other, and then merge together. “That takes many, many, many lifetimes of the universe under anything like normal circumstances,” Saavik Ford says, “so it had to have happened in a very dense stellar environment” like an active galactic nucleus or AGN.
Earlier this summer, Saavik Ford and her team published a paper about a black hole merger exploding with light coming from the same general part of the sky as the one detailed this week. Though there could be a connection between the flare and the merging black holes outlined in the recent papers, Ford is waiting for the full dataset of the new findings to be shared to tease out some answers.
Right now, LIGO and Virgo are not making observations, but the two facilities will be back online by the end of next year with some upgrades. Gravitational-wave astronomers like Weinstein hope these Earth-bound gravitational wave detectors become all the more sensitive in order to probe more distant sources and look farther back in time in the evolution of the universe. “We need to look for more exotic events like this one—and for more exotic events like nothing we have ever seen before,” Weinstein says. “Wouldn’t that be great?”
Make Iphone Louder With These 6 Tips
iPhones are some of the most widely supported phones that get software updates for up to 7 years from their date of release. While a great feature, it doesn’t help take care of hardware limitations which can become more and more prominent as time passes. If you are someone who listens to a lot of music then you might have realized that the old iPhone speakers sometimes don’t manage to hold up to modern-day devices.
There are a few tricks to increase the volume output on your iPhone and here’s how you can get started!
Related: How to Backup iPhone on Mac
1. Change EQ settings
Did you know that your iPhone comes with EQ settings? Equalizers are audio processors that help change the volume of different frequencies individually. You can also change the volume for a range of frequencies which helps get rid of imperfections in many audio tracks. EQ can be used to brute force increase the volume on your device.
This might introduce some distortion at the highest volume levels, but should help you increase the volume of your device significantly. Here’s how you can access and change the EQ settings on your iPhone.
Open the Settings app on your device, scroll down and tap on ‘Music’.
Now tap on ‘EQ’ at the bottom.
You can now choose an EQ setting that best suits your needs. Depending on your device, we recommend you give ‘Late Night’ and ‘Small Speakers’ a try. This should help you increase the volume on your device.
This will affect the overall audio output of your device. The biggest noticeable difference will be when you are playing tracks via the native music app on your device. If you are looking to increase the volume for third-party podcast apps, then we recommend setting your EQ to either ‘Treble Booster’ or ‘Spoken Word’ for a much better experience.
Related: How to Track an iPhone: Best 5 Ways To Use
2. Turn off volume limiter
If your iPhone volume is abnormally low when compared to similar devices, then chances are that the volume limiter has been enabled on your device. Volume limiter helps limit the maximum volume of your device to prevent damage to your hearing when wearing headphones. This limit is enforced by default in certain regions of the world depending on the local laws. Here’s how you can disable the volume limiter on your device.
Open the Settings app on your device and tap on ‘Sounds & Haptics’.
Tap on ‘Headphone Safety’.
Turn off the toggle for ‘Reduce Sounds’. If you wish to keep it turned on, then use the slider at the bottom to increase the maximum output of your device depending on your preferences.

3. Redirect the sound
The basic way to do this would be to cup your hands around the speaker for a higher volume when holding the phone. If you wish to leave the phone untouched, then you can place it in a tall glass which will also have the same effect on the sound.
A good tip here would be to position your phone according to the height of the glass. If, when placed inside the glass, your phone is as tall as the glass or near its actual height, then make sure the phone speakers are facing towards the bottom of the glass.
However, if you have a taller glass than your phone, then place your phone upside down to reduce echo. The maximum output in these cases can be achieved by using a tall glass that gets narrower towards its base, this will allow your phone to be suspended slightly above the bottom of the glass for maximum output.
You can also set your phone against a wall on a flat surface, at a 45o angle for the same effect. We recommend you place something rigid in front of your phone in such cases to avoid it from slipping over while playing music for a long time. This usually happens when you get a call or notification and your phone vibrates.

4. Clear your speaker grills
iPhone speaker grills are notorious for gathering dust, lint, and dust particles. These items can clog up your speaker grill which can, in turn, reduce the amount of sound emitted from the speakers. You can start by cleaning your speaker grills using a sim eject tool. Be gentle, and scrape out all the lint and dust particles sitting on top of the iPhone grill. The grill is easily punctured, so make sure you do not exert too much pressure during the cleaning.
Once you have cleaned out all the dust and debris sitting on the top, use a cello tape to create a small cone with the sticky side facing outwards. You can then use the pointed end to clean and capture all the leftover dust in the speaker grills.
The video linked below should help you do the same. We recommend you avoid using any solvents or liquid cleaning agents as once they seep inside the phone, they will be pretty hard to get out and dissolve. Moreover, liquid cleaning agents can activate the pH stickers in your iPhone which will void your warranty under the liquid damage clause.
