When Fiona Whittington started TechTogether in 2023, she was “maybe a little overconfident,” she says. Why? The Boston University junior was fresh off organizing the world’s second largest all-female hackathon—at the time called SheHacks Boston, with around 800 attendees—which had garnered the attention of outlets like the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the New York Times.
Plus, Whittington (COM’19) had just won a citywide innovation contest—beating out a team from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, no less—and was deservedly feeling herself.
Her winning idea?
Taking SheHacks and turning it into TechTogether, a nonprofit aiming to bridge the gap in gender representation at hackathons by setting communities up with the resources to host their own gender-focused hackathons. (Hackathons, if you live off-planet, are multiday events where computer programmers team up and compete to solve programming challenges. Workshops and networking sessions are usually on the menu, too.) Resources include funding, training, and access to TechTogether’s massive network of sponsors and tech professionals.

But don’t think this is just another “women in tech” initiative.
“It’s important that we recognize that it’s not just women who are a gender minority in the technology industry,” Whittington says. “I don’t like the terminology ‘women in tech’ for that reason. TechTogether as a whole serves marginalized genders, which includes people who are trans, nonbinary, and gender-fluid. Other identities need just as much attention as ‘women in tech,’ which we see everywhere these days.”
Since 2023’s win, TechTogether has become an official 501(c)(3) organization. Whittington and her team have started chapters in six cities (Boston, Atlanta, Seattle, Miami, Chicago, and New York), helped organize 11 hackathons, and served more than 4,700 hackers from marginalized gender groups, many of them first-time hackathon attendees.
And now, TechTogether’s work has landed Whittington on BostInno’s annual “25 Under 25” list for 2023, one of three Terriers making this year’s cohort.
Describing the 2023 choices, BostInno writes: “Some are still in high school. None were alive when the United States hosted the World Cup in 1994, and most weren’t during the Atlanta Summer Olympics two years later.”

Joining the 24-year-old Whittington on the list are fellow Terriers Yasmin Morais (CAS’19), 23, and Hailey Hart-Thompson (CAS’21, COM’21), 22. Morais made the list for cofounding RefEd Initiative, an app that partners with NGOs to provide math and language education to refugee children. Hart-Thompson was cited for her work as cofounder of the Stateless Collective, a nonprofit that aims to reduce neocolonialism in volunteer work by training American students to study and volunteer abroad.
The Stateless Collective was part of Innovate@BU’s 2023 summer accelerator program. Both RefEd Initiative and TechTogether benefited from working with Spark! BU’s tech and innovation incubator.

Whittington says she’s deeply grateful for Spark!’s help. “Everything I learned about starting a company—all the leadership skills, all the branding skills, and even just believing in the possibility that I could start something—came from [Spark! founding director] Ziba Cranmer,” Whittington says. “I feel like this is an Oscars or Grammys speech, but I do want to thank all the BU folks who made our success possible.”
TechTogether’s most recent hackathons have all been forced to go virtual by the ongoing pandemic. Whittington says she’s looking forward to being able to once again plan in-person hackathons—events she describes as “life-changing” for many attendees.
“I don’t think people who aren’t part of the computer science community understand how important hackathons are,” she says, or that in addition to creating networking opportunities, hackathons allow attendees to gain practical, résumé-building experience that’s difficult to come by outside of internship or classroom settings.
“We’ve had many, many success stories of people changing their major because they attended a TechTogether hackathon,” Whittington says. “Or they landed a job because they were able to talk about a project they built in an interview, or they were able to add several skills to their résumé to make it more competitive. Or, it just gave them the confidence to say, ‘Oh, maybe coding is for me. Let me continue to pursue this because now I have a ton of other people behind me supporting me.’”

UCI Machine Learning Repository – UCI Machine Learning Repository is clearly the most famous data repository. It is usually the first place to go, if you are looking for datasets related to machine learning repositories. The repository contains more than 350 datasets with labels like domain, purpose of the problem (Classification / Regression). You can use these filters to identify good datasets for your need.
Kaggle Kaggle has come up with a platform, where people can donate datasets and other community members can vote and run Kernel / scripts on them. They have more than 350 datasets in total – with more than 200 as Featured datasets. While some of the initial datasets were usually present at other places, I have seen a few interesting datasets on the platform, not present at other places. Along with new datasets, another benefit of the interface is that you can see scripts and questions from community members on the same interface.
Analytics Vidhya You can participate and download datasets from our practice problems and hackathon problems. The problem datasets are based on real-life industry problems and are relatively smaller as they are meant for 2 – 7 days hackathons. While practice problems are available to people always, the hackathon problems become unavailable after the hackathons. So, you need to participate on the hackathon to get access to the datasets.
Quandl Quandl provides financial, economic and alternative data from various sources through their website / API or direct integration with a few tools. Their datasets are classified as Open or Premium. You can access all the open datasets for Free, but you need to pay for the premium datasets. If you search, you still get good datasets on the platform. Eg. Stock Exchange data from India is available for free.
Past KDD Cups KDD Cup is the annual Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery competition organized by ACM Special Interest Group on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining. Archives includes datasets and instructions. Winners are available for most years.

BU to Offer Three Year JD/MBA degree Students can complete dual program in seven semesters
BU’s accelerated three-year JD/MBA program, launching in September, is designed to provide graduates with the skills and competencies to be leaders among their peers.
Beginning in September, Boston University will join the ranks of Cornell, Yale, Penn, Columbia and a handful of other schools offering an accelerated three-year joint JD/MBA degree program. BU currently offers a dual degree that can be completed in four years. The new program will allow students to earn both degrees in just seven semesters, rather than the eight it would take to complete the four-year program or the ten it would take if pursuing the two degrees back-to-back.
“Traditionally, combined programs have allowed students to complete both degrees in four years instead of the five years required if the two programs were pursued sequentially,” says David I. Walker, a School of Law professor and associate dean for academic affairs. “But the financial and opportunity costs of four years of professional education are still daunting, and many students who would be attracted to a combined degree have opted to do a three-year JD program and simply squeeze in as many business courses as possible.” The accelerated program, he says, will reduce the cost and time commitment involved and “increase the value proposition of a true combined program.”
To be considered for the accelerated program, which is expected to accept a limited number of students when it begins in September, candidates must take both the LSAT and the GMAT and apply to both schools. The program requires that students start in both programs from the outset.
How will the accelerated program differ from the current four-year dual degree track? During the first year, students will take the same courses as any other first year law student, with one important caveat: those enrolled in the accelerated program will replace one law school course with a business school course each semester. For example, during the fall semester, students will take Civil Procedure, Contracts, and Legal Writing along with a core course for the MBA program, Leading Organizations and People, and a one-credit executive skills course, Managing Career Growth. In the spring, in addition to taking Constitutional Law, Legislation, Property Law, Legal Writing, and the Lawyering Lab, they’ll take Financial Reporting and Control, another course required for completion of an MBA, and either Executive Presentation or Executive Written Communication, both one-credit courses.
During the summer after their first year, students will take a full load of law and business classes and a mix of law and business classes their second and third years. All of the business school courses will be offered in the evening. Ditto all summer classes, so that students can work or volunteer during the day. The program is designed to free students from course work during their second summer, when law students traditionally work at internships at law firms and other legal settings.
Because only a few schools offer an accelerated three-year joint degree, BU “is positioned to be a leader in this area,” says Steven H. Davidson, Questrom School of Business associate dean of academic programs.
The purpose of the accelerated program is to make students stand out in an increasingly competitive job market. “The issues facing today’s global economy are increasingly complex, and those who possess a foundation of business and law will be better prepared to engage clients on a deeper level to respond to changing environments,” says Davidson. “This program is designed for students who recognize they want to have a broader impact on an organization.” Those completing the accelerated dual degree are expected to pursue careers in a range of fields, from government to investment banking, private equity, consumer protection and finance, entrepreneurship, and corporate law.
“It is more important now to come out of a professional school with solid skills in both areas, because the opportunities and time to learn on the job are shrinking,” Walker notes.
Prospective students are increasingly looking for flexibility and value in any graduate program they pursue, says Davidson. “Today’s students have a desire to more rapidly engage in the workforce to apply their skills and make an impact, and this program will allow them do that.”
