Suggested March 2024 Toshiba Tg01 Windows Phone Coming; Free Wm6.5 Upgrade For Existing Owners
We weren’t so keen on Toshiba’s TG01 back when we reviewed the Snapdragon-based smartphone in July. While the spec sheet paints an alluring picture, the failings both of Windows Mobile 6.1 and the UI tweaks Toshiba attempted to address that with meant we couldn’t recommend it over its HTC WinMo counterparts. Now Toshiba are back with the TG01 Windows phone variant, the same hardware as before but running Windows Mobile 6.5.
That means you get Windows Mobile 6.5’s new Marketplace for Mobile download store, on a 4.1-inch WVGA resistive touchscreen, together with what’s still the fastest processor on a smartphone available now. There’s also a 3.2-megapixel camera, HSPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and a microSDHC card slot.
Even better, all TG01 owners will be able to upgrade their 6.1 devices to Windows Mobile 6.5 once the OS is launched, thanks to a free download from Toshiba’s site. The Toshiba TG01 Windows phone, meanwhile, will go on sale across Europe from October 6th.

use Word for free.
Now that Microsoft has made a concerted effort to switch everyone to a subscription model for Office 365, it’s even more tempting to opt for a free alternative. Our pick is LibreOffice, which is far from being a mere off-shoot of OpenOffice. For most people LibreOffice offers everything you need, being just about as compatible with Microsoft Office as it’s possible to get.
If you want a suite which copies Microsoft’s ribbon interface, look at Kingsoft Office Suite Free, and if you don’t mind embracing a cloud based service then Google Docs is another excellent choice, especially for collaborating with colleagues.
Also, there are plenty of free PDF editors which allow you to convert a non-editable file into a format, such as .doc or .xls so you can change it.Best free image editor
Photoshop is still the benchmark for photo editors, and while you can get the cheaper Photoshop Elements for £71 on Amazon UK or $69.99 on Amazon USA, there are plenty of free photo editors, including some web apps.
Some people find that Paint.net offers everything they need for offline use, while others will be more than happy with the considerable online charms of best free photo editors.
Also, don’t forget that back in October 2023, when the Windows 10 Photoshop Mix, even support layers. Others, like Avira Free Security Suite, Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition, and Avast Free Antivirus, but don’t forget Microsoft’s Defender which is included with Windows 8 and 10.
For our current top picks, see our separate Best Free Antivirus software roundup.Best free email software
Email is one of those personal things where, as with antivirus, any recommendation is always going to be controversial. Some people swear by Mozilla Thunderbird while others think that best free email services in detail separately.Best free backup software
Backing up irreplaceable files is a chore we could all do without, but while cloud storage services let you sync files without lifting a finger, none are capacious enough (even if you’re paying) to back up your entire PC or laptop.
The good news is that there’s free backup software on offer, you just need to provide the storage. One of our favourites is Easeus ToDo Backup Free and if your needs are less than 5GB then iDrive is another solid option. You’ll find more alternatives in our guide to the best backup software.
But if you have under 50GB of files, it’s well worth checking out MediaFire. This cloud storage service will give you 10GB for free and up to 50GB with a bit of work. Find out more in our roundup of the HitFilm Express, Blender, and the excellent DaVinci Resolve which you can read all about in our roundup of the best free video editors (and which we use ourselves to edit some of the videos we shoot).
Again, as with photo editors, don’t overlook the video editing apps available on your phone and tablet. For iOS users, iMovie is a convenient way to edit video you’ve taken on an iPhone (or iPad).
Android users don’t have the same built-in software, but GoPro Quik is free (and it’s also Tunnel Bear and Windscribe. Alternatively you can opt for the free VPN services we’ve tested out, and also the best paid-for VPN services.

Packet Sniffing may sound like a malicious activity at first glance, but it is actually an ethical way to analyze the network, and diagnose any network-related problems. Packet Sniffing tools are used by network technicians for such diagnostic processes. Having said this, there are an equal number of incidences where packet sniffing is used by hackers for malicious activities such as collecting passwords and spying on user traffic.
Here, we are not going to talk about packet sniffing attacks, but some free packet sniffing tools that can be effectively used to diagnose network problems and resolve the issues. Before we present you three packet sniffing tools for Windows, let’s look at how packet sniffing tools work in general. How Packet Sniffing tools work
There are different types of packet sniffers. Some packet sniffers are used only for detecting hardware-related problems. Other packet sniffing tools are actually some software apps that run on the host computers.
The packet sniffing tools intercept and log network traffic. The tools ‘view’ the network using a wireless or wired network interface. The packet sniffing tool needs to have access to this interface on its host computer. If it is a wired network, a packet sniffing tool can capture the data which totally depends on the network’s structure.
The network structure might let the packet sniffer tool view traffic on the entire network or it can let it view only a small segment of it. If it’s a wireless network, packet sniffing tools can capture one channel using the wireless interface. If the host computer has multiple wireless interfaces, then the packet sniffer can capture multiple channels.
The sniffing tool then analyzes the captured raw packet data. The analysis is converted by the sniffing tool into a readable format. This analysis is nothing but the conversation between nodes on the network. This very information is helpful for the network technicians to locate the fault.

If you also wish to analyze your network, here are three free packet sniffing tools for Windows.1. WireShark Packet Sniffer
Wireshark is one of the popular free packet sniffing tools for Windows. This tool can give you an ability to see what’s happening on your network at a microscopic level. Some of the important features of this tool are as follows:
Deep inspection of hundreds of protocols, with more being added all the time
Live capture and offline analysis
Standard three-pane packet browser
Apart from Windows, this tool can run on other operating systems such as Linux, OS X, Solaris, FreeBSD, NetBSD, and many others
Captured network data can be browsed via a GUI, or via the TTY-mode TShark utility
The most powerful display filters in the industry
Rich VoIP analysis
Decryption support for many protocols, including IPsec, ISAKMP, Kerberos, SNMPv3, SSL/TLS, WEP, and WPA/WPA2
Coloring rules can be applied to the packet list for quick, intuitive analysis
Output can be exported to XML, PostScript®, CSV, or plain text
You can try this tool by downloading it from its website.2. SmartSniff
SmartSniff is yet another free packet sniffing tool that allows you to capture TCP/IP packets that pass through your network adapter and view the captured data as sequence of conversations between clients and servers. With the help of this network monitoring utility, you can view the TCP/IP conversations in ASCII mode or as hex dump.
SmartSniff provides 3 methods for capturing TCP/IP packets:
Raw Sockets (Only for Windows 2000/XP or greater): This method allows you to capture TCP/IP packets on your network without installing a capture driver. However, this method has some limitations and problems.
WinPcap Capture Driver: This particular method lets you to capture TCP/IP packets on all Windows operating systems.
Microsoft Network Monitor Driver (Only for Windows 2000/XP/2003): Microsoft provides a free capture driver under Windows 2000/XP/2003 that can be used by SmartSniff. However, this driver needs to be installed manually.
If you wish to try this packet sniffing tool, download it from here.3. Microsoft Message Analyzer
Microsoft Message Analyzer is the successor to Microsoft Network Monitor. It is helpful in capturing, displaying, and analyzing protocol messaging traffic and other system messages. It is not only an effective tool for troubleshooting network issues, but for testing and verifying protocol implementations as well.

To fix Windows PC system issues, you will need a dedicated tool
Fortect is a tool that does not simply cleans up your PC, but has a repository with several millions of Windows System files stored in their initial version. When your PC encounters a problem, Fortect will fix it for you, by replacing bad files with fresh versions. To fix your current PC issue, here are the steps you need to take:
Download Fortect and install it on your PC.
Start the tool’s scanning process to look for corrupt files that are the source of your problem
Fortect has been downloaded by
readers this month.
SlimDrivers is a nifty piece of software that can help you keep download, install, and update drivers on your system in a jiffy. Long gone are the days of downloading and installing each driver manually.
With tools such as SlimDrivers, you just have to run the utility and let it perform an assessment scan. After the scan is done, it will tell you everything you need. Driver-wise, of course.
More so, you can also perform backups, remove obsolete drivers from your system, and restore previously created backups. Thus, SlimDrivers is not just your regular driver installer utility.
You can think of it as a fully-fledged driver manager. How to download and install SlimDrivers?
Better yet, where to download SlimDrivers? Although the download link is pretty much still kicking, there’s no product page on the developer’s website or another way you can reach it.
On the bright side, we’ve managed to locate a working URL, but note that it might not work for much longer. SlimDrivers has been out of support for a couple of years now.How to install SlimDrivers?
Download the SlimDrivers installer (*)
Locate the executable on your computer
Launch it and follow the on-screen instructions
Watch out for the recommended additional software
Note that, unlike other programs, SlimDrivers doesn’t offer to install software from other developers. The tools it recommends during installation are proprietary, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Even so, you might not need additional utilities on your PC, so make sure you don’t accidentally deploy them by not paying attention to the installer.
(*) – Unfortunately, SlimDrivers is obsolete, but you can still download it and install it on your PC. However, if you’d like a new, improved version of it, you should check out DriverUpdate, from the same developer.
Visit the slimware website
Wait for the download to complete
Locate the installer executable on your PC
Follow the on-screen instructions
Pay attention not to accidentally install additional software
That’s it, the installation process is similar to its older counterpart, SlimDrivers. Nevertheless, make sure not to accidentally deploy any additional software solutions on your PC if you don’t need them.
Visit the slimware website
Choose a license plan
Type in your payment information
That’s it. Depending on your choice, you’ll either have a one year license or a lifetime one. More so, the Lifetime plan also lets you use the app on up to 5 computers on the same license.
Launch Windows 10’s Settings app
Select SlimDrivers/DriverUpdate from the list
Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed
Either one of the products is great at keeping track of your drivers and managing them properly without significant efforts. However, SlimDrivers is out of support for a couple of years now, so it’d be wise to give DriverUpdate a try.Screenshots
