Change is coming. After ten years of sending free consumer traffic to online businesses, Google Shopping is ending its charity. From February 13, free listings will begin to disappear from Google Shopping.

And interestingly, it’s not just the Internet big-boys who are benefitting… The Google Shopping algorithm seems to have levelled the playing field somewhat; allowing smaller retailers the chance to be seen high on the results pages.

This evolution in paid search isn’t just about the biggest or strongest surviving: tiny retailers who have managed the transition to PPC in Google Shopping well are seeing good returns on their investment.

As Amazon sells everything, and customers often react well to its suggested related products and on-site search function, it has often been seen as having online shopping sewn up.

Now, niche retailers who may’ve previously lost out to the Amazons of this world can benefit from better search visibility.

From the Summer, though, all Google Shopping results will be paid for. And it’s highly likely that, by then, the Shopping search function will resemble a marketplace in its own right.

So, what does Paid PLAs mean for Internet Marketers?

Well, it’s worth noting that Shopping search is seeing rising numbers of users: who look for a lot of different things. Shoes? Of course. Hats? For sure. But Plumbers? Mechanics? Solicitors?

It seems odd: but even services like these are being searched for in Shopping. And that means Shopping optimisation really is a vital consideration as part of any businesses’ online strategy.

The Devil though, as usual, is in the detail. We’ll get into some positives shortly: but it’s worth noting one big metric is down, and that’s average basket values. Average order values have dropped by around 12% in the US since Shopping went paid.

Why? Well, because Shopping is becoming the search destination: not retail sites.

That is, consumers go onto Shopping and search for “hats”, find a hat they want, and buy it. They then go back to Shopping to look for “shoes”; rather than staying on the retail site where they found their footwear and using their on-site search to browse for other products.

This, say some, means Google really is tackling Amazon head-on: a battle which is going to be very interesting to watch in the coming months.

All the signs point to this being a genuine improvement for search users (as spammy businesses are less likely to pay to appear in Shopping, or put the work in to optimise their product feeds), and for retailers: who should enjoy far better conversion rates if they get PLAs right.

As Darwin posited, evolution isn’t always about being the biggest or strongest. It’s about adapting well.

What Do The Various Icons Mean In Samsung Camera App

Shutter Button

As expected, this button lets you capture photos or videos. Long press this button in the photo mode to start capturing video without switching to the video mode first.

Green Dot

A green dot will show up in the top-right corner when you are using the Samsung Camera app or the camera in any other app. This is basically a privacy icon that informs the user that the camera is being used by some app.

If the clock icon is yellow and shows either 2, 5, or 10, it means the delay timer is enabled with the set time.

3:4 or 9: 16

This icon basically represents the aspect ratio of the photos that you will capture. Depending on the currently selected size of your photo, you will see an appropriate icon. Tap on the icon to see and select the appropriate aspect ratio for your photos from 1:1. 3:4, 9:16, Full.

Square Icon with Play Symbol

This icon represents motion photos. If enabled, the icon will be yellow. Tap on the icon to turn it on or off. For the unaware, motion photo mode captures a tiny video along with the actual picture when you press the Capture button.

Magic Wand

Use this icon to see the live preview of filters and face effects and add them to your photos. If its yellow, that means one of the filters or face effects is active.

These icons represent the zoom level. Long press on one of them to fine-tune the zoom level.

Single-Person and Two Person Icons (Selfie mode)

The person or the two-person icon at the bottom also represents the zoom level. Tap on the two-person icon to capture photos in a wide angle.

It essentially treats headlines and body copy as two different elements or “asset,” where versions of each are listed out. The Ads system then pulls an asset from each list (headline and body copy), and combines them to make a full text ad.

Cross-Campaign Asset Reporting

What Does ‘Cloud Computing’ Mean, Exactly?

Take Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, for one. During his recent Churchill Club appearance, Ballmer dismissed the uniqueness of the concept by saying, “When people talk about cloud computing, they’re talking just about taking some stuff, putting it outside the firewall, and perhaps putting it on servers that are also shared or storage systems.”

Oracle’s always-quotable CEO Larry Ellison went one better, according the Wall Street Journal. Ellison declared during a recent analyst conference, “The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women’s fashion. Maybe I’m an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It’s complete gibberish. It’s insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?”

According to Gartner, you can blame hardware and software vendors for the confusion — and the apparent outrage it’s spawning. David Smith, a vice president and research fellow at the analyst firm, said he agreed that “cloud computing” represents another take on well-worn concepts, brought about as vendors slap the latest buzzword on their products if they think it will help them sell.

But Ballmer and Ellison aren’t alone in blasting the trend — with growing dissatisfaction over “cloud computing” bringing none other than Free Software Foundation guru Richard Stallman into the fray.

“It’s stupidity. It’s worse than stupidity: it’s a marketing hype campaign,” he said.

Blame the vendors?

Gartner’s Smith said he understands that Ballmer and Ellison blasted the concept in part to defend their turf against competing software models. But they also were reacting to the confusion caused by overuse of the term.
