Facebook Events app on iOS

Facebook has released a dedicated app on iPhone that you can use as your dedicated calendar.

Events on Facebook are almost as integral a part of the service as photos, status updates, and the almighty poke. To place greater emphasis on events, the social networking site has released an app named just that, Events, for iOS (with an Android version on the way). As one would expect, the app gives you an overview of your various Facebook events coming up. The app also suggests events you might like, based on interests selected when you first open the app. Though most interesting is that Facebook offers to tie-in to your regular iCloud calendar, meaning if you want to make it your primary calendar app you can very well do so.

To start, download and install the app from here. If you’re already logged into Facebook on your phone, you’ll be prompted to “Continue as Your Name Here.” Follow the motions and enter the app.

After entering the home screen, tap the calendar icon (third from the left). You’ll be taken to the calendar view. At which point you may be greeted by a giant lock symbol. If so, the app will tell you to head over to the Settings app and change a toggle in privacy. While we couldn’t find the Events app in the privacy portion of Settings, here’s what did work.

Head to the fourth icon to reach the Events app settings, and tap the first selection Calendars.

Select the calendar icon Facebook Events app

Adding your iCloud calendar Facebook Events app

Upon tapping Calendars, you’ll be prompted to give Facebook access to your iOS calendar (the default calendar system on iPhone). To create and modify non-Facebook events within the Events app, you’ll need to allow access. This access can be revoked at any time within the privacy section of the Settings app.

Once you’ve granted access, you can add an event using the plus button in the top right. You’ll be greeted with a menu asking if you want to create a Facebook event or a standard calendar one.

Facebook Events app

In the wake of the calendar app Sunrise, Facebook’s Events app could fill a hole in the app screen of power calendar users. Few apps offer event suggestion just a few panels over and combining a users default iPhone calendar is a clever way to keep users inside Events. Support for Google Calendar would seal the deal but we’ll wait and see what the Android version brings.

5 Surprising Ways You Can Use Ai In Marketing Right Now

When you think of artificial intelligence, or AI, humanoid robots or some kind of computer-generated all-knowing being, like Don Cheadle’s character in the new Space Jam, may come to mind. While artificial intelligence sounds like a far-off concept, it’s actually more accessible than you might think.

Never thought that the villain in Space Jam: A New Legacy would be an AI. But here we are in 2023.

In fact, most of us encounter some type of artificial intelligence every day. It’s how you receive product recommendations while browsing online, it’s that magical skill that understands your voice when you speak to Siri or Alexa, it recognizes the faces in your photos, it automatically moves the spam emails you receive into your Junk folder, and it sends you a text message when it suspects you might be a victim of credit card fraud.

Artificial intelligence is all around us. And it’s making life easier. But what about AI in marketing?

There are practical ways to use artificial intelligence in marketing that are accessible for businesses both large and small. In this post, we’ll discuss

What AI in marketing is

Examples of AI in marketing

How you can use artificial intelligence in marketing right now

So, take my (non-robotic) hand, and let’s learn about AI in marketing together.

What is AI in marketing?

Let’s start off with a few basic definitions. The definition of AI, or artificial intelligence, is “intelligence demonstrated by machines, in contrast to the natural intelligence displayed by humans.” AI is essentially the science of programming machines to be smarter than we are by making accurate predictions based on large sets of data.

AI in marketing is the practice of applying artificial intelligence to marketing tactics, strategies, or practices.

AI for marketing often happens in:

Data collection

Data analysis

Content creation and curation

Product recommendations

Search recommendations

Ad targeting

Website chatbots

Marketing automation

We’ll get into some of these in-depth a little later.

Types of AI in marketing and examples

There are four common types of artificial intelligence applications that are used in marketing: virtual reality, augmented reality, voice, and machine learning.

Virtual reality

Virtual reality, or VR, is when you’re immersed in an environment outside of your own reality. Created with stereoscopic sound and 3D computer imaging, VR creates an immersive, believable experience that makes you feel like you are there both mentally and physically. Turn your head and the world turns with you, so the illusion created is never lost.

Examples of virtual reality in marketing

Virtual reality is used in marketing to create experiences, and it’s something that’s becoming more commonplace for businesses.

This use of AI marketing in the form of a virtual reality campaign allowed Volvo to target users who weren’t near a dealership or who may not have visited the dealership prior to the XC90 Experience.

Other brands, such as LiveNation, have also used VR to create experiences for customers—and it’s something that we know will only continue.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality, or AR, is the augmentation of your own reality, the one that you’re currently in and surrounded by. AR lets us see the real-life environment right in front of us—my computer screen, my cup of coffee, my dogs sleeping in a chair—and overlays it with digital augmentation. So the real world and the digital world are intertwined.

Examples of augmented reality in marketing

There are some really cool examples of augmented reality marketing campaigns, and brands are getting more and more creative in how they’re using AR in marketing.

One example comes from IKEA. Their app, IKEA Place, allows users to place “true-to-scale” models of IKEA furniture right in their own spaces. Not sure if a rug will work with your current furniture? Try the app. Looking for a new bedside table but want to make sure it will fit? The app helps with that, too.

This genius application of AI marketing in the form of an AR app solves a problem many shoppers have when it comes to their furniture purchases.

Another one of my favorite examples of AR is USA TODAY’s 321 Launch app, which lets you use augmented reality to experience a rocket launch right from your phone on any flat surface.

Through immersive storytelling and creative experiences that solve consumer problems, augmented reality provides a practical and impactful use for AI marketing.

Voice is one of the forms of artificial intelligence that the majority of us are most familiar with. Artificial intelligence powers Siri, Alexa, Google Home, and other voice assistants and uses natural language processing to understand our queries and identify our unique voices.

Examples of voice AI in marketing

Marketers, brands, and local businesses are still trying to harness the power of voice search, even though it’s technically been around since 2010. If your business or brand can be the one recommended by voice assistants after a local search, you can win a large share of the market. It just comes down to how to do that.

Related: Get our guide to master voice search for your business.

If you’re looking for a real-world example, just ask your voice assistant for “best restaurant near me” or “dry cleaners open now” and see what results you get.

An example of voice search results from Siri.

Machine learning

Machine learning is a type of AI that means a machine can learn on its own without being programmed to do so by a human. Its system can automatically learn and improve from experience. Sounds a little crazy, right?

AI will gather information like what types of shows you watch on Netflix, the kinds of products you buy on Amazon, how many minutes you leave your refrigerator open, whether you prefer the scenic route or the quickest route in the car, and what kinds of jokes you like. It can then make recommendations based on this data and improve over time.

Machine learning is the reason your Spotify playlists can become so narrowed in on what you like or don’t like—it’s learning from your behavior based on every liked or skipped song.

Dave gets it.

Examples of machine learning in marketing

Machine learning is probably the most common application of artificial intelligence in marketing because it can happen in the backend of a lot of systems and programs. Google and Bing both use machine learning AI to refine search results.

Google even has a name for theirs: RankBrain. RankBrain is “a component of Google’s core algorithm which uses machine learning to determine the most relevant results to search engine queries.”

According to Moz, “the query goes through an interpretation model that can apply possible factors like the location of the searcher, personalization, and the words of the query to determine the searcher’s true intent. By discerning this true intent, Google can deliver more relevant results.”

In layman’s terms, RankBrain is using machine learning to process searches and deliver what it deems as the most useful result to the searcher.

Machine learning is hugely useful in instances where there is a large amount of data to process and has optimized many aspects of marketing for businesses and brands both large and small.

5 ways to use artificial intelligence in marketing

You’re sold on artificial intelligence in marketing now, right? Great! So how do you get started? Here are a few ways your business—no matter the size or budget—can use artificial intelligence to power your marketing.

1. AI and lead management

Here’s an example of email templates that use AI and automation to keep contacts engaged after becoming a lead from LOCALiQ’s Client Center.

2. AI and A/B testing

A/B testing has many benefits for your marketing campaigns. By A/B testing your campaigns, you can identify what is resonating with your customers so you can drive better results and maximize your budget.

When AI is used in A/B testing, automatic tests and tweaks can be created and analyzed without you needing to manually isolate variables and create tests. The AI can then select the best-performing ad variation and run that without you lifting a finger.

This combination of AI and automation allows you to A/B test more variations and zero in on the factors that will drive the best results. Plus, with machine learning involved, the AI will continue to learn what’s working best for your campaigns and make recommendations based on those results.

3. AI and budget optimization

One challenge many brands and business owners encounter is distributing their marketing budget across channels. This is often an extremely manual process that requires the use of multiple systems, reports, and calculations to determine the right budget mix. And when it comes time to make changes, you’re going through the steps all over again.

By incorporating AI into your marketing budget mix, automatic optimizations can be made to your budget and bids across channels through a single system.

Often, these optimizations can be made based on the channel and channel-specific factors like targeting, bid strategy, and more, that are driving the best results for your business. This makes your cross-channel marketing more effective and easier for you to execute.

4. AI and ad design optimizations

Similar to A/B testing, there are times when you’ll want to test ad design variations to find out what will drive the best results. One way you can do this is by using AI in your design optimizations.

This can result in small design changes, such as shortening copy, changing the color of a call-to-action button, or updating font, which can lead to meaningful results.

Here’s an example of an ad design that was tested and optimized using AI:

5. Creating experiences with AI

What’s going to set your business apart from others in your market? Many marketers believe the answer is through creating unique experiences that engage your customers. If you can provide a way for customers to engage with your business in a meaningful and impactful way, you can stand out from the competition and win more than just new business—you can win brand loyalty.

Not every business and brand has the means to host or create mind-blowing in-person experiences like customer appreciation events or conferences featuring the biggest celebrities. But you can think creatively and use AI in the form of virtual reality or augmented reality to create experiences and connections with your customers—no matter where they, or you, are located.

One of my favorite examples is St. Jude’s Hall of Heroes campaign. Using virtual reality, St Jude gives people a way to hear stories from childhood cancer survivors and their families so they can experience something through VR that they wouldn’t get to experience otherwise.

Think of ways you can use AI in marketing to create experiences and connect with your customers—even if it’s something as simple as adding chat to your website or creating automatic email replies when you receive an inquiry after hours.

Artificial intelligence in marketing: An intelligent decision for any business

Artificial intelligence in marketing will only continue to gain steam in the coming years. You can set your brand apart by using AI to deliver a good customer experience, demonstrate value to your customers, streamline processes for your business, and make meaningful optimizations that will drive better results.

Track Your Progress As You Learn Something New With Better Every Time App

I am big on crafting and do-it-yourself projects. If there is one think I’ve learned from my many attempts to create handmade stuff, it is that practice is the key to getting better. I fail nearly every time I try something new. However, by the third or fourth attempt, I’ve improved greatly.

I am big on crafting and do-it-yourself projects. If there is one think I’ve learned from my many attempts to create handmade stuff, it is that practice is the key to getting better. I fail nearly every time I try something new. However, by the third or fourth attempt, I’ve improved greatly.

Better Every Time is a journaling app that makes it easy for you to track your progress when attempting to get better at something. As you work at it, record what happens so that you will know what not to do the next time around…

I don’t actually keep any kind of journal. I spend no less than eight hours per day writing thousands of words. The last thing I want to do before bed is to write more. Normally, I would have passed up an app like this. However, I was immediately drawn in by the interesting graphics, so I decided to look into it further. I’m glad I did.

Instead of being a boring old journaling app that only offers faux book paper or minimalistic writing options, this app looks like a game that might involve something cute climbing a mountain riding on the back of something equally as cute. It’s not, but it looks like it.

As you add new notes on the progress of your project, a new section of the journey opens up and you can swipe back to view older notes. Every time you open the app, a new progress signpost appears. If you don’t have anything new to write, be sure to tap the big “X” within three seconds of opening the app or a new signpost will be added and you’ll have to manually delete it.

The more notes you add, the longer the road to success gets. Each new signpost is added with an entirely different backdrop. As you progress, it will appear that you are traveling up the mountainside. The grass will grow greener and more trees will appear. Eventually, you will reach the top of the mountain.

App Use

The point of this app, as noted by its name, is to help you get better at doing something by practicing it. Pick something you want to get better at, and set it as your goal. Then, use the app to track your progress by noting every time you practice.

For example, I’ve recently decided I am going to learn how to make Macarons. The French confections are like the Mount Everest of baking and I’m determined to conquer them.

Using Better Every Time, I can set a goal to practice the process by baking a batch once per month until I get it right. Every time I bake a batch, I can write down my experience, note where I think I went wrong or right, and take pictures of my results.

According to the app, getting better at something takes 21 attempts. I’m not sure where that number comes from. But, based on that belief, I’ll have to practice making Macarons twice per month in order to be good enough to bake a perfect batch of them for Christmas, which is my ultimate goal.

To get started, Tap “Start a Journey.” You will be asked to enter your goal. “I’m going to get Better at:” enter your objective, like skiing or singing, or whatever you want to improve upon.

Then, enter the recurrence you think best fits your abilities. Don’t, for example, claim that you will make Macarons seven times per week. That is way too much work. You’ll be exhausted and won’t want to keep going. Instead, set a reasonable recurrence. You can set a goal between one and seven times per day or month.

Then, walk away from the app until you have completed your first attempt. When you open the app again, you’ll be able to add a note and a picture. It is probably not unlimited, but you can write quite a bit within your note section. The date and time that you created the note will be added.

If you want a visual note of your attempt, be sure to take a picture. I took pictures of the progress of a pair of gloves I was knitting and noted when I saw an issue that will need to be fixed when I try again.

Swipe upward on the screen to view older notes. You’ll see how far you’ve traveled along your journey to get better. Tap one of the signposts to see what you wrote for that particular check-in.

To revisit previous journeys, tap the small arrow at the top right of the screen. You will see old projects that you’ve completed or abandoned. You can see your progress or delete what you abandoned. To delete a journey, swipe it from right to left.

After you’ve checked in with your progress, close the app until you are ready to add a note again. After a few notes have been added, you’ll see that you are headed up the mountain on your journey.

Once you’ve practiced 21 times, you will be at the top of the mountain, and hopefully “Get Better” at whatever you wanted to improve at.

The Good

This is a very simple and easy to use project tracker. I regularly create or design crafts and sweets from scratch. This app makes it possible for me to note when I see my mistakes and successes so that, the next time I try something, I’ll know the way to do it better.

The Bad

You can only track one thing at a time. That just does not work for me. I always have at least three projects going at once. I’d really like to be able to keep track of multiple projects.

Value Conclusion

This app isn’t for everyone. It doesn’t have a lot of features. It only does one thing. But, it does it well. It also looks great. If you are hoping to get better at something, whether it is running, learning a different language, or playing a video game, use Better Every Time to help you keep track of your progress in a good looking way. Download it in the App Store today.

The Best Magsafe Battery Packs You Can Buy Now

MagSafe, which allows for accessories of all kinds to attach to the back of supported iPhone models, is a great feature. But as is the case for all accessory-focused features, it needs support beyond Apple’s. Which is good news for external battery packs.

So, if you’ve been looking for a way to keep your iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and/or iPhone 12 Pro Max juiced up when you need it, we’ve got a nice roundup of battery packs for your consideration. As is par for the course, these accessories will attach to the back of your supported iPhone, secure in place, and offer up wireless charging.

So let’s get into it.

The best MagSafe battery packs for your iPhone Apple

Apple launched its own option for a MagSafe external battery not too long ago. It’s made from a hard plastic, so it’s smooth to the touch. It’s lightweight and compact as well, so it will be comfortable to use on a daily basis.

With a battery cell of only 1,460 mAh, this is by far the smaller capacity we have listed here. But what it lacks in capacity, it makes up for in smarts.

There isn’t an on or off switch, with the battery pack handling charging automatically. It features full wireless charging speeds, up to 15W. And if you plug the MagSafe Battery Pack into a 20W power adapter via a USB-C cable, it can charge both the battery pack and the iPhone 12 at the same time.

The MagSafe Battery Pack can also charge an AirPods or AirPods Pro wireless case if you rest it upside down and place the case on the charging area. The case also unlocks reverse wireless charging as well in the iPhone 12 lineup.

The MagSafe Battery Pack is available now from Amazon. It only comes in the white color.

Anker was one of the first companies to launch a MagSafe battery pack, and it’s still one of the best options to choose from. This is the PowerCore Magnetic Wireless 5K, which, as the name suggests, features a 5,000 mAh battery in its small frame.

Once attached to the back of the phone, this battery pack will charge your iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max at 5W with wireless charging. And thanks to the magnetic design, it will work along with MagSafe-compatible cases as well.

The battery pack supports various protective elements, too, including temperature control, short circuit protection, foreign object detection, and more. There’s a USB-C cable to charge the battery pack included in the box, too.

This MagSafe battery pack is made by OISLE. It measures in at just 10mm in thickness, so about half the size of the iPhone itself. There’s a built-in LED indicator, too: the logo itself. It lights up to show at a glance how much power is remaining in the battery pack. Blue: 100%-70%; purple: 69%-30%; and red shows 29%-0%.

The battery pack works with MagSafe cases, offers up to 5W wireless charging, and the battery measures in at 4,225 mAh.

It’s available now from Amazon in blue, black, red, white, and pink.

Mophie has been around for quite some time, making some of the best accessories for Apple’s mobile products. And the snap+ juice pack mini is certainly no different. It has a single USB-C connector on the bottom of the battery pack for when you need to charge it back up, and it measures in at 5,000mAh in size.

The snap+ juice pack supports MagSafe for magnetic attachment to the back of compatible iPhone models. It also has adapters for attaching to Qi-enabled Android-based smartphones as well. Or, if you just want to plug the phone into the juice pack mini, you can do that, too.
